Q: How to merge unallocated partition to linux partition

penta I have a windows partition which was 500gb, then i installed ubuntu with a 40gb partition, now i am short of space, so i booted my ubuntu14 live cd and shrunk my windows paritition and got 88gb free unallocated space. Now i want to merge this 88gb unallocated space to my linus parition. What ...

You can't resize the Ubuntu partition while it's running. Also, even when you're trying to do the thing in a Live CD, you have to mount the ext4 partition.
@StarOS what do u mean by mount ext4 partition ?
Just select your Ubuntu partition (which is probably a ext4 filesystem one), and mount it. There should be an option to mount it somewhere in GParted.
there is unmount option, not mount
Then it's already mounted.

so......how to merge this thing........
m here
OK, can you send an image?
Of the window that has that resize bar?
So i can show how to resize (merge with unallocated space... it's called "resizing" or adding space to something)
sorry, i quite did not get u
Click on the link.
actually that unallocated space is not giving resize/move option
You can't resize unallocated space. Only partitions.
08:52
so should i make that unallocated space in to a partition ?
that is sda5 linux partition
You have to make the "Free space following (MiB) set to larger than 0. Not the PRECEDING, following.
the option is greyed out
Can you provide an image of GParted (not that window)?
Oh, the option greyed out is not the option i want. It's the option right above it, a little left to it. It will ungrey out when you change something there.
In the smaller GParted window.
The one above this text.
And then right above that option, the option i want you to change is the option right above that option, or the "Free space following" option.
08:59
all the options are actually greyed out ;-(
i cant change the new size option
I'm saying the option below the new size one.
i cant make any changes to any of the option, even if i do....they reset
Something is wrong here.... Minimum size: 35281 MiB Maximum size: 35281 MiB with unallocated space? This looks wrong.... Try reinstalling GParted i guess?
:-( i get same result for live cd
That's strange.
Can you wait a bit and i'll go to my GParted Live USB and maybe help you more? It has a Web Browser, so i can still talk with you.
Yes or No?
09:05
yes
OK, this may take some time, and it may even fail to boot. If it fails, i'll go on Windows again.
ok

God, that was annoying. It came with NetSurf, which for me is worse than Internet Explorer.
kk
It's been since like 1992, and it still doesn't support javascript!
crap
And when i got to about:config, there was an javascript_enabled option. It was set to false. And i never could change anything in that page!
lol

Moving on to the original topic, maybe try to merge the 2 unallocated spaces (if that's possible, beacuse having 2 is not normal.)
i dont have 2 unallocated space
And try to resize again.
i.sstatic.net/eF0rh.png Isn't there 2 unallocated entries here?
thats 1mb, i didnt create it, linux created it
1 MiB.
(correction)
i am taking backup, just in case
just say me the process, il do it
09:30
Can you merge the 2 partitions?
il do it
after merging ?
No, you need to merge the 2 unallocated partitions. You can use Partition Magic to do this.
Even though it's discontinued.
do u yhink i can use ease us patition magic from windows ro merge the unallocated 88gb to linux ?
*to
No, you can use PartitionMagic to merge THE 2 UNALLOCATED SPACES, then the resizing of the linux partition may work.
