@jonsca still there?
@CHM Yep
CHM
CHM
Bah! 8 hours later hehe
Yes, lol, I've moved since then
CHM
CHM
same
QM is going to kill me.
I've been fighting with a simple looking problem for more than two weeks now
How to get the WF of benzene's ground state by using the Huckel Method.
@CHM The one that you posted?
CHM
CHM
06:03
It's related to what I'm looking to do, yes
I was just wondering if there was any meaning to an LCMO.
@CHM Honestly, I would have to defer to one of my colleagues on that. My understanding of chemistry is pretty basic
Speak of the devil
I can probably field the math, but the conceptual framework is beyond me, unfortunately
CHM
CHM
Heh. The theory I'm working with is probably the most basic one can come up with to describe molecular orbitals.
Professor @Manishearth do you know about linear combinations of orbitals
CHM
CHM
Professor?
@jonsca Yeah, and that's about all I know.\
@CHM :P
06:09
I remember the HOMO/LUMO theory from Orgo, but that's about all I can conjure up
@CHM No, I'm just teasing him ;)
CHM
CHM
Haha. I wondered!
@jonsca I once got an email addressing me as such though. Made me lol
@Manishearth Yeah, those are fun. Science supply companies and the like will err on the side of caution to kiss up to you
If they're wrong, you get a kick out of it anyway
@jonsca Exactly :P
@CHM Well, you can bounce your ideas off of us, but as simple as it may be, I'd have to refresh all of that over a weekend or something
As I'm reminding Manish, all of that was a long time ago hehe.

Oh, no worries. I'll have a chat with my professor tomorrow, hopefully.
At first, pride prevented me to ask - now it's a matter of preserving my sanity.
Sounds like you've been pounding your head against the wall, so your professor will probably respect that.
Look frantic and rub your eyes a lot before you talk to him/her
CHM
CHM
@jonsca I have. Actually, I thought I had solved this problem before - more than a month ago. It's by carefully reading my code, and with self-doubt, that I figured I had it wrong.
@jonsca Lol. He won't be impressed. He must have dealt with such frustrations himself before ;)
@CHM And he did it on an Apple ][ with a green monochrome screen. lol. Nah, don't worry about it, everyone can appreciate that you have to start somewhere with it.
CHM
CHM
@jonsca Talking about an Apple II... there's one sitting in the group's lunch room.
Yes! Go ahead and boot up Apple Pascal and hammer out your model. Bonus points if you can do it all in BASIC
CHM
CHM
06:21
But anyway, I guess anyone involved in research has to go through this "what the fuck am I doing" phase.
@jonsca C'mon, BASIC? Use punchcards.
CHM
CHM
@jonsca I wonder if it's still in working condition... maybe it is.
@Manishearth I've never used punch cards. I have used an Apple, though hehe
@CHM BASIC should be in ROM when you boot it up
@jonsca My father used punch cards at one time. Me, I've programmed in BASIC and 8085 a bit--none of the fun physical punch cards.
I've never programmed a microcontroller. I've always wanted to, though
CHM
CHM
06:25
Hmm. BASIC sounds so primitive. It's not on my "to learn" list xD
@jonsca Pretty fun, as long as you have a setup with peripherals and IO controllers(which let you input the program in hex) to make life easy :)
I take it your have a Raspberry Pi since you hang out there so much
@CHM No no use 8085!! (See manishearth.github.com/OpcodeGen.html for an example of what the mnemonics look like, hit go and scroll down to see the hex)
CHM
CHM
Do you mean an Intel 8085?
@CHM Yeah
06:26
@CHM It's not that it's primitive (though it's leaning that way) it forces you into bad habits early on
CHM
CHM
Ok.
I've programmed in Mathematica, Python and Haskell. (with the usual intro of HTML/PHP/JS)
@Manishearth I know all your programs are secretly copying my browser history to some remote location :P just kidding
@jonsca :P
CHM
CHM
So I'm leaning more towards functional than iterative.
@CHM Yeah, you don't want to go from Haskell to BASIC ;)
Your brain might start a picket line
06:29
@CHM Done none of those (except HTML/PHP/JS). Want to do Mathematica, I'll see if my insti provides a copy. Probably does.
@jonsca LOL
CHM
CHM
@jonsca Haskell is taxing enough as it is :)
That's what I mean, it's like switching the assembly line at an automobile plant into one that puts together little red wagons, your brain will be like, "Huh?"
CHM
CHM
hehe
:D
Hmm, time for lunch. I'l catch you guys later :)
Later!

@Jonsca I'm reading Mathematica code written by a really good FORTRAN programmer.
Hurts the eyes.
*And the brain.

7 hours later…
13:42
@CHM: There are several things people can mean when they say "really good FORTRAN programmer". I hope for your sake that you mean one of the good ones. :P
(And yes, as someone who is currently writing up, I am intimately familiar with the "what the hell am I doing" phases.)
