@LanceLafontaine: Naah, physical chemistry. It just has to do with changing volume by temperature. Remember, it's "gasoline dispensed". It's not talking about any changes to gasoline's chemical properties which may or may not happen in the engine--that's more of a chemistry question. Depending on it's form, if it was asked on chem.SE, we might have kept it. Since it fits here as well, and has an answer, there is really no need to migrate at all. — Manishearth 2 mins ago

Q: What can I do for this site?

ManishearthI really like this site, and want to help it succeed. What can I do for Chemistry-Stack Exchange at this stage of the beta?

What do you guys think of
?
06:47
Someone starred the wrong message :S
There we go. Guilty!

@Manishearth Are those carbon atoms and if so, why are they green??
12:25
@LordStryker Yep
I dunno

You know, whenever anyone asks me things like "is that what the molecule reallllllly looks like? is that there real?" I just want to look at them and be like, "uh, yeah... haven't you ever taken the time to look at a benzene molecule under a microscope in your lab? and yes, hydrogens ARE white and have a black 'H' imprinted on them as well..." :P
Benzene looks like a jelly sandwich
period.
Anyhow regarding the Carbon thing, conventionally they are dark grey -> black color
I know
I was berated when I had my carbon atoms as a teal color. Had to go back and change them all.
What was that rendered in? Looks like povray but not sure
12:29
@RichardTerrett Answer that^
:P
So who is RichardTerrett?
You seem to know him.
@LordStryker Australian chemist. Been chatting with him in this room a lot. DOn't know him personally, it't just that he posted that image
Click the May 9 at 11:19 above the image I posted
Btw, since the comments on the promotion post have been addressed, I'm nuking them, alright?
(comments are supposed to be deleted once incorporated into the post)
yeah man, I don't care
12:35
boom :)
*I sensed a disturbance in the force, as if a great deal of letters cried out in anguish then were suddenly silenced
I probably butchered that quote but whatever.
12:51
@LordStryker Did you create this room?
Or did Nick T?
considers adding himself as room owner but realizes that it doesn't matter
(mod powers supersede room owner powers apparently)
I had populated the first room ever. NickT decided to create a room instead so we had to move everyone over to the empty room. In light of what happened, I was made a room owner.
I have never needed to use any 'power' on SE in my life.
13:14
@LordStryker That's cos you don't have any community-moderation ones yet :)
Get 3k(500 on beta), and you'll soon see how much you use them
Of course, on beta it's quiet enough that close votes aren't really needed
Eh, when my stuff was largely ignored I decided I wouldn't spend so much time contributing.
@LordStryker Really?
I'm pretty busy anyway.
13:17
8 and 9 upvotes isn't "largely ignored"
8 and 9?
Anyway, I hadn't seen those two, upvoted :)
Huh, guess I haven't checked in a while.
Remember, beta site
Well that's encouraging.
Yeah I know its beta.
I was a pledged supporter.
13:18
Also, you're more active on TeX--TeX is insane in handing out upvotes :)
So don't try to compare TeX with other sites :P
I love TeX. I should hang out there more often. Its been a while.
Those guys in chat are super cool.
Looks fun :)

@Manishearth could do with another font :)
but it's great
hi there
@Fx Feel free to play around with it. I used Comic Sans.
F'x
F'x
13:51
@Manishearth I will
@Fx Also, try improving the text a bit. I'm no good at writing such stuff :)
F'x
F'x
I'm not very good at that either, but at least it gives us two versions
I'll wait some time for criticism (also called: others' ideas) on chat, then I'll post it on meta
You should use Computer Modern or Latin Modern font ;)
F'x
F'x
@LordStryker TeX doesn't have great attraction for chemists (unlike physicists, e.g.)
I was kidding about that.
F'x
F'x
14:03
joke aside: I don't like Computer Modern much… even when I write in LaTeX, I switch to other fonts: Myriad, Minion, Gentium, that kind of stuff
I love CM. Whenever I write a document in that font, people assume its legitimate before they even read it. :P
Calibri however.... ick.
F'x
F'x
equations in Minion Pro (minionpro package)
14:19
Looks good.
F'x
F'x
@LordStryker regarding your paper, is it submitted now?
heh, unfortunately no. Decided to go back and build in some stronger 'chemical significance' into the introduction. The problem is, my boss has taken a keen interest in how we go about it. Getting his attention to work with me on this thing has proven difficult.
F'x
F'x
@LordStryker I read that in the transcript
But we both agree no more 'work' needs to be done. We just need to sell it (going for JACS atm)
I don't think JACS will accept it but we'll likely get into JPCA or B.
F'x
F'x
@LordStryker well, good luck with it
14:22
Thank you :)
F'x
F'x
@LordStryker my two previous papers were rejected by JACS
one didn't make it as far as the referees, and the other one got only one referee saying "meh, theory… why didn't you do spectroscopic measurements to back it up?"
^^This
We don't have experimental data... only referenced material.
They won't take it.
F'x
F'x
well, it's good to take the chance… and they are fast
I really don't care. It will be nice to unload this thing. I've had it for 7 years (given to me as my first project when I started out as an undergrad).
F'x
F'x
I have actually published three JACS papers with "only theory" in the last few years, so it is possible
14:25
That is encouraging to know.
Their guidelines specifically state theory WITH experiment but I guess its a loose criteria.
F'x
F'x
I'm waiting on a final reading from my boss on a Phys Rev Lett manuscript before sending it
I should actually be writing the cover letter right now :)
Nice!
Whats it about?
F'x
F'x
@LordStryker elastic properties of porous materials
@fx looks great!
@fx Waxeagle mentioned(in TL) that we can use a qr code to actually link it.
F'x
F'x
@Manishearth don't know how to create one
don't know anyone who uses those, but might be location-specific
14:34
Ill do it once im on desktop
That's us^^, add it in an appropriate place
Most smartphones can handle them in a standard manner
F'x
F'x
@Manishearth I created one, and it looks nothing like this :)
Not location-specific
@fx it may have shortened the url
F'x
F'x
@Manishearth by "location specific", I meant it might only be because friends around me are more "hardcore geek" kind than "casual tech user" :)
Bth of them work, both point to chem.SE
Probably slightly different formats
@Fx They will all know how to use QR then :)
F'x
F'x
okay, I've uploaded it (PDF and image) on Meta, with QR code
@Manishearth @jonsca any of you has asked on TL if we could run a community promotion ad on physics, mathematics, mathematica and other possibly-related sites?
14:43
@fx we can, no prob. But physics has a very small meta community, itll hardly get votes :\
F'x
F'x
@Manishearth I have faith in your ability to whip some sense into these people :)
I don't :p . I can try
Thing is, we need ten votes. Unless we get chem.SE users to do it :p
@Fx mathematica is out, only graduated sites have community ads
F'x
F'x
@Manishearth six votes, I think
F'x
F'x
14:49
"There is a minimum score threshold an answer must meet (currently 6) before it will be shown on the main site."
Math.se doesn't sound quite right either
Aah
Hmm, no harm in posting on Math
@fx Awesome :) Add that to the metapost.
F'x
F'x
we need to brainstorm some good catch phrases…
F'x
F'x
14:50
"For smaller molecules, there's always… Chemistry.SE!” — for biology.SE
I fear that the jelly benzene shall become our logo :p
What about math?
F'x
F'x
@Manishearth we should ask Richard for 1. a proper licensing statement, 2. a high-res version :)
Yep. Could you superping him?
F'x
F'x
let's ask him next time we see him
@richardterrett see fx's comment above
Oh whoops :\
F'x
F'x
14:54
@Manishearth no problem either way
Kk
Dinner, bbl :)
F'x
F'x
see you

1 hour later…
16:22
There are certainly worse logos to have than jelly benzene. :)
16:38
@Fx I heard my name being mentioned... re: jelly benzene, I would be honoured. One thing to note though - the isosurface meshes were catmull-clark subdivided and smoothed in blender to get nicer reflections. As such they are not strictly quantitative, but very close. I don't know if that matters to anyone but me. I can prepare a larger version with arbitrary colours on request.
@Fx I'll be back tomorrow.
F'x
F'x
17:27
@RichardTerrett well, great many thanks
17:42
@RichardTerrett Aaah, so that's how you got the orbital mesh reflections to look so curvaceous.
(I gave glass orbital rendering a try in POVRay but the reflections always looked really ripply. The artificial window added also looks really neat in yours. :) )
(I may have said that before, I can't remember.)
