A: Why is there no neutron in protium?

paracetamol@Jan's put up a nice and crisp, answer. My answer is merely a supplement to that ;) It's because the hydrogen ("protium", if you will) nucleus has no need for neutrons. What's this "need for neutrons", you ask? Every element (apart from hydrogen) has multiple protons (it's the number of proton...

Is there a simple explanation of how methanol is produced from syngas?
I mean, so that I could remember the reaction
> In terms of mechanism, the process occurs via initial conversion of CO into CO2, which is then hydrogenated:[38]
CO2 + 3 H2 → CH3OH + H2O
Ah

Do we have a chemical equilibrium in the first reaction?
Would NO break apart into N2 and O2?
The answer key says that decreasing the pressure won't affect the chemical equilibrium in reaction 1
why?
@CowperKettle Apparently, yeah...
@CowperKettle The way I was taught it: If the total number of moles of particles on either side of the reaction are the same (as in this case: 1+1 <--> 2), pressure variation won't affect equilibrium ._.
@paracetamol Thank you! I will reread Chemguide's on Le Chatelier's and maybe there will be an explanation

;)
> The effects of changes in pressure can be described as follows (this only applies to reactions involving gases):

When there is an increase in pressure, the equilibrium will shift towards the side of the reaction with fewer moles of gas.
When there is a decrease in pressure, the equilibrium will shift towards the side of the reaction with more moles of gas.
^ That's towards the end of the page (just above the green box) :/
Although Chemguide is a very good idea :)

Q: Can a person be arrested/detained if a prohibited item is found in the carry-on luggage while transiting?

LoveRecently, while returning from St Petersburg to New Delhi via Almaty in Kazakhstan, our family had a rather bizarre experience. Before querying anything, I would like to sum up the situation - Event 1 Our family of three checks-in at St Petersberg Pulkovo airport. At the last moment, we decided...

@paracetamol Thank you. Now I understand. Yesterday, I was reading about reaction rates, and I should have been reading about chemical equilibrium.
Now I understand what MAR was saying
What's not to love about MAR?
He never says Allah Akbar. (0:
His answers are sometimes bizarre
But have been rather good thus far

@CowperKettle Allahu Akbar, huh? :-|
@CowperKettle I honestly have no idea if I was actually any help here, but if I was... you're welcome :D
2 scientists walk into a bar.
Scientist 1:"I'll have some H2O"
Scientist 2:"I'll have some H2O too"
The second scientist dies.
@CowperKettle Oooh! You do poetry? :D
This one's good too:
Three men, one a statistician, are out hunting when they come across a deer. The first man shoots and misses by 5 meters to the right of the deer, the second man shoots and misses by 5 meters to the left of the deer, the statistician cries out, "we got him!"

I just learned @paracetamol 's structure today.
They taught us in class this morning :D

NaOH
O2
NaBr
Fe
The question is: select two elements with which Cl2 would not react
But I checked and it seems to react with all of these
Can I ask this on main site? Would it not be downvoted, @M.A.R.?
Sorry if I"m disturbing you
@CowperKettle It'd be downvoted
Too homeworky
@M.A.R. But what effort can I make?
I read online, and it reacts with all of these
Just a link to each of the sites that say these react
Ah. Okay, I'll post the question

Q: With which 2 of these 5 chemicals would Chlorine not react? N, NaOH, O2, NaBr, Fe

CowperKettleA question in a Russian EGE test asks to choose 2 chemicals out of 5 with which Chlorine does not react: Nitrogen - I checked and it reacts NaOH -- reacts O2 -- reacts NaBr -- reacts Fe -- reacts I'm at a loss. Which two should I pick then? Maybe Fe and Nitrogen, because they would be t...

A: Does (liquid) nitrogen react with chlorine or other chemicals in a swimming pool?

Mad ScientistNo, gaseous nitrogen (N2) does not react with chlorine. You can even buy chlorine in nitrogen, which is used for analytical purposes. If chlorine and nitrogen gas reacted, then it would be useless as an analytical standard. A likely source of confusion is probably the reaction of chlorine with a...

Ah. For some reason Nitrogen is not reactive
But we do have the chemical NCl3
Yeah
Doesn't mean you can mix N2 and Cl2 and get NCl3
Yes. I'm curious.
I will try to read (try reading!!) "chemistry of Nitrogen"

She's got great questions and she seems like the type who would be likely to return to the site. I would like to see more users and older users return to rep (if they deserve it.)
