You left me confused .__.'
@MelanieShebel You told this story before; nevertheless, it still sounds frustrating. I don't know any stories like that from academia; but it's daily life in the industry.
It suks.
sucks*
Haha, sorry I've told it before. Sometimes I forget, haha.
You can see, we listen to you. :-)
00:33
:P
Thank you @Loong

1 hour later…
01:40
@Jan so what is it?
Jan
Jan
01:58
What is what?
the mechanism lol
02:11
I'm lost, haha.
Jan
Jan
Depends on the enzyme xD
well, for example?
Jan
Jan
I hate picking examples =C But for example there’s the well-known and often taught catalytic triad for efficient proton shuffling and allowing nucleophilic attacks; I think that was in trypsin …
@Jan one of your answers has a -1? :O
is that even possible..
I mean here on chem.se
Jan
Jan
Obviously … I was hoping to get down to -3 for the badge xD
A catalytic triad refers to the three amino acid residues that function together at the centre of the active site of some hydrolase and transferase enzymes (e.g. proteases, amidases, esterases, acylases, lipases and β-lactamases). An Acid-Base-Nucleophile triad is a common motif for generating a nucleophilic residue for covalent catalysis. The residues form a charge-relay network to polarise and activate the nucleophile, which attacks the substrate, forming a covalent intermediate which is then hydrolysed to regenerate free enzyme and release the product. The nucleophile is most commonly a serine...
02:24
well if you send me a link, I can contribute another downvote ;)
@Jan thanks
Jan
Jan
@getafix Feel free ;)
found it haha
It's actually not a bad answer, don't think it is deserving of -1 (or -2 or -3 for that matter)..I'll reverse it once you get the bade ;)
how should get out of bed, and start life-ing...
Jan
Jan
I don’t think it’ll get that low unless there’s concerted action xD
How should I end lifeing for today and get to bed … should we swap @getafix?
Wow, I just realised: current votes are +1/-2. Maximum trolling against peer pressure 8D
02:39
Haha
@Jan Please haha. Although if you do swap with me you'll have to attend to one of my over due problem sets. ;)
man, I'm so bummed about research. :(
@MelanieShebel I can sympathise with your situation. My undergrad has been a real let down too; although the specifics of our experience differ
I'm sorry @getafix
When you think of your college, do you look back on it negatively?
Oh of course. And I still have about 1.5 years left in this place
02:43
My advisors are great people, my research advisor is fabulous and my professors too. But the honors program is just so awful and I swear this guy makes it his job to make me feel bad about myself.
I am literally counting days till I get to leave
I graduate next Spring (2018) so I think I'm in the same boat as you.
and Japan in general hasn't been all roses either
Yeah Fall 2018
for me
but the way I deal with it, or at least try to is that I won't allow a couple of pricks to discourage from doing something I love
and I'll just have to find success despite my institution, not because of it..unfortunate, but it is what it is.
Yeah
@getafix Could you help me retitle this?
My problem isn't just with the recognition, it's with just how things are handled in general.

Q: Regaining motivation after recognition for research is given to others

Melanie ShebelI'm an undergrad in chemistry and am in the honors college at my school. Several of less than awesome things have happened in the program, but here are the two main things that really affect me the most right now: Last Spring, the college held a research conference and I did REALLY well with on...

03:16
@MelanieShebel hmm probably include that in the title then regaining motivation for research after unsavoury experiences in academia or something like that?
I am bad with titles lol
03:48
Me too! Haha!
04:09
Yay! My chemistry jokes article went mini-viral. That'll help a little bit w tuition! :P
chemistry jokes? i am intrigued..
I try making some from time to time, but usually there's no reaction. I guess all the good ones Argon..
okay, I am terrible
Yeah, that one's on there.
There's one that's a bit dirty, but it's a pic.
Nice thing about it is that you have to know nomenclature to get it, otherwise it's not dirty or funny.
It's the one about cuddling.
hahahaha xD
So wrong
That's the best science joke I have seen this week
although the bar is not that high..the other one I saw was about potatoes in higher dimensions..
04:20
Yeah and chemistry jokes are notoriously boring.
well this one was gold, can't believe I never seen this one before
Okay, I should really get to work now.
ciao

Q: Really freaking great questions to ya' know... promote the site

Melanie ShebelWhat are some of the best, not necessarily the most popular, but just some amazing questions on Chemistry.SE that I (or we, if ya'll so inclined) can use to promote the site?

My mind was deeply penetrated
my feeble mind cannot tolerate such intense penetration
it was almost as if I was lobotomised

1 hour later…
11:25
Can't tell if I'm being trolled right now ....
@NotCorey by whom? me? I was merely responding to what ortho posted. And what ortho posted was in response to a comment I had made on a question.
No no no. Not you haha. There's a question that just got posted about castration
Oh yeah saw that one
I don't think it's a troll
But what do I know, still recovering from mental penetration

2 hours later…
13:11
@orthocresol I finally got my 6. :-)
@NotCorey Why did you delete your answer?
It was redundant. I'd wrote it in a bit of a hurry away from my laptop intending to edit later! (Plus you're the master of nomenclature ;) )
What's the name of the org. compound?
@Loong I haven't been keeping track of hat triggers lately... hmm..
13:26
@NotCorey … in a bit of a hurry away from my laptop intending to edit later get a hat? ;-)
@Loong If you did not answer that, it might have earned him a Mild Mannered.
What did you do to get 6?
@orthocresol or a Snaphat
@orthocresol nothing, I wasn't here
o________O
I guess, some question or answers where I had left comments have been edited and/or upvoted.
@orthocresol Give a man a nice fish, and he want's another one.
@NotCorey Nevertheless, you have answered the question in the title. And now my first sentence looks awkward. Furthermore, I will never get a Sportsmanship badge if I am always the only one who answers these questions. ;-)
@Loong Does that mean that if I want to get easy upvotes, I just have to post competing answers on any question you answer?
13:37
As long as your answer is correct, you might have a chance. ;-)
But don't write "I don't know the answer, and I don't think that the question is important" like this one: chemistry.stackexchange.com/a/65368/7951
> THE NAME OF THE ORG. COMPOUND IS ACETOPHENONE.
A compound has no name. – Jaqen H'ghar

A: What's the name of the org. compound: Ar-C(O)CH3

mike aliseI got the answer from the comment It's Acetophenone

:-D

@geta @DHMO o/
hi
I still need one more up-vote for the 'good answer' badge...that sucks -_-
@Kaumudi.H HAH! Now I've got nine! 3:D

Oooh, @ortho is already in the new year? Happy new year to you! =D
Also, the answer formerly at –1 is now sitting at a score of +1. Again, no peer pressure badge =C
And no Clockwork yet, either =C
@Jan no, not yet, it is only 11:11pm haha
Jan
Jan
So fireworks later?
I do wonder … if places on opposite sides of a border which is also a time zone separator get fireworks multiple times … if so, I should move to one such place xD
xkcd's What If? had one section on that topic.
Happy New Year, guys
at least its new year's in my corner of the world
Jan
Jan
Happy new Year @getafix! And then probably also happy new year @Mart?
15:21
Happy New Year to you too @Jan
and of course @Martin..guess we are in the same corner of the world haha
@ortho @Loong @Mart 2017!!! Hurrah \o/
Jan
Jan
@paracresol you’re already in 2017, too?
@Jan and @geta Happy New year!
@Jan No ._.
But the New Year hysteria caught on ;P
Jan
Jan
I don’t start the wishing until the new year began for the people. It’ll bring bad luck otherwise. ;)
15:25
@Jan surprised to see that you are the superstitious type ;)
@Jan @Loong Would you guys know where I could find the complete document (without having to pay for it ._. )
@getafix Clearly you don't know @Jan 3;)
@paracresol I can download it and send it to you
you can try places like libgen
@getafix I'd appreciate that!
@getafix Never heard of it? O_o
or scihub
well these websites are technically not legal
@getafix I thought Scihub was :O
15:28
but I hate how access to scientific literature is so prohibitively expensive.
あけましておめでとう! Happy new year from Japan!
3
@getafix Why do you think I'm grovelling for the free paper here XD
@Mart \o/
hmpf, I thought the D2O taste question was a dupe, but it was asked in chat and not on the main site
@Martin 明けましておめでとう
@Martin-マーチン \o/ have a star for your hat
15:31
@getafix Oh yeah, it is illegal ._.
We were the first at the shrine tonight, it was awesome. I have a great time, hope you do too!
huh..cant seem to download it through my unis library website
@Martin-マーチン Pagan -_-
guess ill have to try it when I go to school
@getafix No luck with scihub either :(
@getafix It won't be a bother, I hope?
15:36
yeah
it's fine
normally there's no problem downloading joural articles..I havent downloaded one of these, whatever this is before
Okay, open question... does anyone know where I can find a reliable source that addresses the effect of sodium lauryl sulphate on the perception of sweetness? ( I'm pinging @Jan @geta @Loong, since this is probably their thing)
don't know
@getafix Thanks! I'm looking forward to it :3
@getafix :'(

Neither do I.
I wish I had bothered to find out how to write kana and kanji on my laptop again … but anyway akemashite omedetou @Mart o/

Q: Do we need separate tags for stereochemistry and chirality?

LoongWe currently (31 December 2016) have stereochemistry 292 questions chirality 45 questions stereochemistry + chirality 49 questions Do we really need two separate tags for stereochemistry and chirality? Clearly, chirality corresponds to a subgroup of stereochemistry. So, should all chirality...

@GeoffHutchison \o/ here, have a star ;-)
Thanks!
I think it's been a great year for Chem.SE!
And I'm not just saying that because I'm wearing the t-shirt..
By the way, Avogadro v2 just learned point groups. :-)
@GeoffHutchison Oh, so it is more clever than I am. ;-)
Well, it isn't as a good as a human, since slightly non-planar molecules (e.g., porphryns and phthalocyanines) don't get identified
But it should be much easier to teach symmetry soon.
17:14
pretty much everything I do calculations on is C1 so it's easy for me:-D

17:53
Heya all
@GeoffHutchison I still need to earn that tshirt. Will there be another round of giveaways?
@orthocresol Every time I see your avatar I go crazy because it's a "cute lil' baby seal." Like in this childish voice I use to talk to my cat (if that's a normal thing.. if that's not a normal thing, then I don't talk to my cat like that.... pffft that would be weird!)
I think it's quite normal. :)
Awwwwwwwwwww
There's one video I particularly like
If I had cute baby animal pictures in the lab, my research advisor would get so sick of it. I would be like, "Look at the baby! Look at it!!!"
17:57
Awww
"whitty baby"
baahahaha
My cat heard me saying "awww" and has come to collect its praise. I wish I had that confidence.
3
@MelanieShebel That is a normal thing. However, I know a Persian tom cat who doesn't like it when women talk to him like that.
Have nice parties ! :)
See you next year
Oh, my mom's cat hates his backend being touched and we've said things like, "Don't touch Simon's butt." And now he knows the word and he'll attack if you say the word, "butt" around him.
:-D
Yes, cats know it when you talk about them.

18:14
@GeoffHutchison Porphyrins aren’t planar? Learning something new every day …
18:29
Happy 2017, everybody :D
Jan
Jan
Happy new year, @ortho o/
@orthocresol Is that the Singapore Flyer?
19:16
@Martin-マーチン I like your Lego set.
@Jan - That's my point - porphryins are planar, but if a slightly non-planar one comes in, the symmetry feature can't find the mirror plane. So we'll need to add a "flatten" command.
Jan
Jan
@GeoffHutchison Oh~, I get it ^^
@MelanieShebel btw, did you chat with @GeoffHutchison about your plans?
19:40
What plans?
@Loong Oh, yeah, I did a while back but I'm not applying to graduate school until next fall.
And I still don't really know what area I'd like to pursue.
I like organic chemistry more and more, it's like this really fun puzzle identifying what a compound is using IR and mass spec and NMR. And I like some mechanisms, but the research I did was in physical chem and was all done on the computer which I liked. We did work on the protein folding problem which was just enthralling to me.
@MelanieShebel Ok, I just thought he's better qualified to give you advice than most of us here.
I would die if I got into the Pande group at Stanford, but I'd never get in there. I'm just trying to put together a list of schools that would be a good fit for me. :P
Oh, well thank you, @Loong! :)
well, you have to try ;-)
