Q: How should we identify and handle answers that exists mainly to promote unconventional theories?

LoongOn Chemistry Stack Exchange, we have a policy against questions that exists only to promote unconventional theories (see What topics can I ask about here?): Some kinds of questions aren’t allowed here: (…) Pitches for your own personal theories or work: We deal with mainstream ch...

anybody know if there is a strict number considered to be the maximum activation energy of a reversible reaction?
I tend to think of reactions with under 20 kcal/mol ∆G‡ , and very small ∆G as being reversible, but is there a quantitative justification to back up this claim?

The Hats are back!!!!!!
Yipeee!!!
I almost thought they would not come back this year...
What are the hats???
I want a hat
link pls

thx @orthocresol
And yes, I did really enjoy flagging your comment as obsolete, @ortho, thank you for asking!

A: Why is BCl3 a monomer whereas AlCl3 exists as a dimer?

hBy2PyTL;DR $\ce{BCl3}$ does not dimerize to $\ce{B2Cl6}$ due to a conflict between the short $\ce{B-Cl}$ bond length in $\ce{BCl3}$ $(1.74~\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$ in my calculations$)$ and the long $\ce{B-Cl}$ bond lengths $(\sim 2~\mathring{\mathrm{A}})$ that would be required for the $\ce{B2Cl2}$ c...

flags as too long
@orthocresol Skipped straight to the "DR" part, I guess.
Your TL;DR is too long. Can you please summarise it?
"TL;DRTTLDR"
Now, to be honest, I don't understand what you wrote. :/
@orthocresol Likely my fault
05:28
Oh, no, I just don't know much about computational stuff at all.
I did most of the work and writing for this after 10pm.
By don't know much I mean I really don't know anything
Ah, <nod>, it is rather inside baseball
@orthocresol The dissociation curves should be pretty intelligible though, right?
@Loong :-( None of the non-secret hats is a Santa hat. I wanted a Santa hat for my avisnake.
Oh well. Past bedtime, I'll cope with the fallout tomorrow morning.
holy petunias @hBy2Py nice job on the computations there.
I've never used ORCA before. Can I do the same stuff you did in Gaussian?

1 hour later…
07:25
@gannex you probably can ;)

this should do something similar... although you should reset the geometry manually to d(B-B)=1.5 and then add the modred line, or set it to 9 and then scan with -0.5
oh, i forgot grimme dispersion... so add EmpiricalDispersion=GD3BJ to the route
08:04
@hBy2Py Oh, yes, I understand the dissociation curves :)

4 hours later…
12:24
@hBy2Py Maybe you can make something from the No Longer Grinchy hat.

2 hours later…
14:52
I got a secret hat ;D
@orthocresol You could got to meta and explain what you did.
I have no clue what I did.

@gannex the teacher said our spectrum was good and it was correct to not see the alkynes peaks because the mass difference of each side groups of the alkyne was not very big (only 9 g/mol)
Zhe
Zhe
Is there a link I can use in a comment for formatting guidelines?
@Zhe For formatting with MathJax?
16:23
@Hexacoordinate-C that seems like a sensible explanation but then how could the other groups have such a similar product and get that peak?
The others must have the alkyne which have a terminal (don't know the english name we say alcyne "vraie" in French I'm not sure to say "true" alkyne in english ^^) H
Zhe
Zhe
@Loong Yes. For MathJax and formulas.
@Zhe You could link to the Help Center or directly to the first meta post about MathJax.
@gannex even with a very few amount of it thanks to the sensibility of the IR machine they detected it
@orthocresol hi :)
16:40
@gannex What @Mart said. It's been over a decade since I've even touched Gaussian, so I wouldn't have the first idea how to help.
17:02
@hBy2Py why do you prefer orca? I'm just asking because I've never used anything other than Gaussian.
Hmmm, everyone seems to be throwing their "hat" into the ring on this question but I don't find the answers particularly enticing...
ORCA is free, Gaussian costs a considerable amount of money.
You only use it if your academic affiliation has a license.

Hullo @Hexacoordinate-C ;)
And..... bye!

18:37
@Loong Thanks I did exactly that.

@hBy2Py I hope you aren't taking my comments too harshly.
Also wishing I had your blade server right now.

Hello I have a question about english
Does "How do you take/process constructive feedback?" ask me how I do feedback or if somone one do one speaking to me how I will improve and take care about it ?
Zhe
Zhe
@Hexacoordinate-C Example: "You need to work on your communication skills." What do you do when your manager tells you this?
@pentavalentcarbon Oh, no, not at all! The criticism in my thesis committee meetings was far more blunt. :-)
Your point is well taken, I chose my phrasing poorly.
I assumed as much. And yes, not looking forward to that.
@pentavalentcarbon I have the thing running computations more or less continuously.
One of the best $400 I've ever spent.
Wait, I thought you said it was a lot more than that?
What's the website again?
The thing is, I live in an old building and can only have so many things on at a time before I flip a circuit breaker.
The desktop + electric kettle or coffee maker is pushing it...
Then again, my desktop has a 1200 W power supply so that might have something to do with it.
21:03
@pentavalentcarbon If your desktop can use more then 1 kW then you should still be happy ;)
Doesn't even generate much heat (it isn't fast) so it can't warm my freezing apartment.
very disappointing
Zhe
Zhe
This conversation has reminded me how much I don't live in the real world.
I just built a binary. Took like 20 s but consumed some 7 hours of parallelized CPU time
consider yourself very very lucky
@pentavalentcarbon Then it seems you wasted some money on that power supply :(
I thought I'd use it to do SLI but I never had the money.
But yes it cost like $300 in 2010 :(
21:08
@pentavalentcarbon Just thought about that
@pentavalentcarbon o.O
It would have been overkill even for that though. I had a Radeon HD 5870 which was a huge power hog, but still nowhere close. Now it has a GTX 970 which I think is more efficient?
Ok, something around 550 W. Still.
Well I guess this prize shouldn't surprise me as normal ones are like two times less powerful.
It's rather dumb. One of the two really big mistakes I made building it.
@pentavalentcarbon That's some nice stuff, quite strong
It's nice, I don't regret it, but I made some poor decisions.
I only replaced the card because it died, I don't play video games anymore really. This one is good for CUDA though.
I shouldn't have gotten a full-size case, bringing it anywhere is awful. Weighs about 30 pounds and is super awkward.
Sounds like a wind tunnel.
@Zhe btw I am home and going to the Boston Python User Group night tomorrow.
Zhe

21:17
@pentavalentcarbon Tues, I am free from 11 to 4:30
If you want to drop by Kendall Square, lunch is on me
I can do that.
Zhe
Zhe
Wednesday also works
Do you have a specific time in mind?
Tomorrow is probably better. Noon?
Zhe
Zhe
Sure
OK, now we just need to figure out how to identify who's who :)
The office is at 355 Main St. I can meet you in the lobby.
Ok. I look like this but with a beard now. github.com/berquist

I look like that
I once grew out my facial hair, and my office mates told me that it was terrible and I should feel bad
People are mean.
Zhe
Zhe
Eh, they were just German and frank
;)
Look, this was a lot better than the guy who used to cut his toe nails at his desk
Why does that seem to be a thing everywhere?
The person who sat at my desk before me in grad school did the same thing.
Zhe
Zhe
I don't know, and I'm not sure I want to know at this point...
OMG, this person used to sit in my seat before I got there too!
Did this person try and use a screwdriver to attach a manual pencil sharpener to the top of a fancy fiberboard desk?
Zhe
Zhe
21:23
uhhhhh
He did break the lab fridge by trying to deice it with a hammer
In his defense, he said "well, it was already kind of broken"
Zhe
Zhe
All right, you're registered for noon lunch
Looking forward to meeting you!
Hooray
Is there a main lobby I can just wait in?
Zhe
Zhe
Yup. If you go in the doors at 355 Main, it's a foyer. There's a coffee shop and some seat.
If you go left through the glass doors, there are some comfy seats.
Ok, sounds good.
Zhe
Zhe
21:28
I'll probably come through that lobby, but we'll end up going through the other lobby across the foyer

Jesus; now; do I want to bounty both hBy2Py’s and Martin’s answers or am I happy to only bounty one of them …? Decisions …
@Jan Don't wanna be abominable? ;)
@Jan Haha :D
Jan
Jan
@Mithoron Huh? You mean do I not want to put on the hat or what? xD
@Jan Yeah :D

How's this, @penta?
@Zhe Black Sheep?

@hBy2Py No, work.
@hBy2Py You seem familiar with Kendall Square...

Just decided to rebounty. My mind is at peace.
23:00
@Zhe Spent 7-1/2 years doing my PhD in Bldg 66
Should hope I know it pretty well. :-)
Partly, I think I need to change my color scheme -- I didn't keep the series colors consistent across all the charts.
(In the first chart, the blue is the 'B2Cl6-relaxed' ... in the second chart the blue is Al2Cl6.)
(I should have kept the blue as the Al2Cl6 through the whole thing, and made the 'B2Cl6-extended be orange or something.)
23:21
Also: Thanks, @Jan! I have to say, I think your ratio on the bounty amounts is, if anything, overly generous toward me. @Mart's answer's top-notch.
Jan
Jan
xD I should’ve just made it a 0.5 krep bounty to being with. I have to double the amount every time. But then again, Mart doesn’t really need any reputation anymore … ;)
