@user1420303 it should be pointed out that the "j" is omitted in quantum numbers for electron configurations, so you would only find spdfghik..., NOT spdfghijk... . I am looking in to finding documentation that you can use for your package

@repurposer O_o j ? What kind of monster requires using the "j shell" ?

J Low?
What's that ?

she's a "monster"

Q: Ferric Chloride solution weight

made2hackWhen I notice that ferric chloride is sold as 40% solution w/v, does it mean weight / volume? Is it a matter of for example adding 40g of ferric chloride crystals to a water solution where the total volume will then be 100ml? Or do I have to workout via the molar mass of FeCl3 to water? How do ...

> EDIT:

The system seems to think this is a homework question (whatever that is). If I divide 100ml of water (so 100g) by 40%, I get 40g of FeCl3. If I dissolve 40g of FeCl3 in 100ml of water, will I get a 40% solution of FeCl3? And a total volume of 114ml? (FeCl3 is 2.9g/cm3, so 40g is approx 13.8ml)?
Heh, I just got a new nick.

@TIPS During the hydrogenation of alcenes, is it 100% syn or do we observe a nonneglibigle (though I guess small) portion of trans additions ? (those could be obtained by having one hydrogen bonding to the alcene, then the bond turning, then the second hydrogen bonding)
Google only talks about the main syn stereoselectivity
Since the hydrogenation is not concerted it should totally be observable
17:04
@Hippalectryon Hmm, I dunno, really.
I never thought of it that way.
I can't manage to find experimental data :(
But it does make sense.
Should I ask on main ?
Yes

In chemistry, Bent's rule describes and explains the relationship between the orbital hybridization of central atoms in molecules and the electronegativities of substituents. The rule was stated by Henry Bent as follows: "Atomic s character concentrates in orbitals directed toward electropositive substituents". The chemical structure of a molecule is intimately related to its properties and reactivity. Valence bond theory proposes that molecular structures are due to covalent bonds between the atoms and that each bond consists of two overlapping and typically hybridised atomic orbitals. Traditionally...

I never get the point why some people (again an Indian who seems to know everything @Jan) post an answer that adds nothing more or less than the existing posts ;(

@MAFIA36790 You really should drop this . . . obsession . . . with Indians.

Q: Word for a person who hates India

Dinesh Kumar GargAnglophobe is the word for a person who hates England. Oxford Dictionaries defines it as noun A person having a strong dislike of England or Britain. Is there a similar word for a person who hates India?

user116211
Although that must not mean I hate my country T__T
@MAFIA36790 :D

@TIPS Pftt, I know racism is serious problem, still it seems sort of silly
19:31
Hello everyone
@Mithoron Racism or calling it a problem?
@Mr.Why Hullo, welcome!
@Mr.Why You;
@TIPS Racism, I don't really understand it
I'm looking for someone who has the experience in molecular modeling of enzyme catalyzed reactions

Welcome to The Periodic Table @Mr.Why! Here are our chat guidelines and it's recommended that you read them. If you want to turn Mathjax on, follow the instructions in this answer. Happy chatting!
@Mr.Why I'm not your guy, and I dunno if there are such people here, but go on with your question. Someone might come by.
@Mithoron This is either because you haven't seen many racist remarks or you're a racist. The latter is not the case (don't ask me how I judge) so it must be the former.
@MAFIA36790 do you know about transition state optimization in enzymes ?

Ask your question, and I'll tell you if I can answer it or not.
19:35
@pentavalentcarbon Oh, about time you fly in with your pentavalent cape.
Though I am not an organic chemist and I don't do reactions or mechanisms or any of that.
How can I optimize a transition state geometry in an enzyme ?
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Have you searched the primary or secondary literature?
I know that transition state is a saddle point on PES an so on
user116211
@TIPS see the first comment there at the English SE question above... the first comment attributes... well that was racist and doesn't seem to be a mild joke ;/
19:37
yes, but I want a ready to use tips
ok, forget the first question
@MAFIA36790 English.SE is . . . not moderated in any way you might imagine.
@Mr.Why Heard that QM/MM is used for modelling such reactions. Not much more then that
What are the best characteristics of a target for a simulation of transition state analogue ?
Although it prolly will get deleted if a mod notices.
user116211
@TIPS Well, I'm an alien there and hardly know anything about their moderation. But I would flag the comment definitely.
19:39
@Mithoron I've read about it and it is often the method of choice
It is simply a modification of the Hamiltonian
@MAFIA36790 Please do if you wish; that's just the clutter HNQ brings about. I'd just comment that, as linguists, ELU people have grown tougher skin towards words than others.
@Mr.Why I think to get help you need to . . . you know . . . show @Pent what you know and don't know.
@Mr.Why So you're probably most knowlegeble in this topic here right now. Maybe someone will see your posts later.
user116211
@Mr.Why I thought it was about Axiom of Choice of $\sf ZFC$ ;/
:D Yes it is an axiom
@pentavalentcarbon can you give a source containing instructive steps for designing of transition state analogue for an enzyme ?
@MAFIA36790 did someone score ? I'm hearing people shouting outside

@Hippalectryon What? Did I just hear the mighty Hipp get intimidated?
Then again, it's Germans, so.
@pentavalentcarbon I've searched in the primary and secondary literature well and didn't find a straightforward criteria for choosing the target, only some hints about the benefit from an already known mechanism and experimentally known Kinetic Isotope Effect.BUT I need more on this particular point , Choosing the target. Thanks in advance :)
user116211
@Hippalectryon Then you must be supporting Germany ;D

Q: Tables/database/literature of specific or optical rotation

pentavalentcarbonI'm looking for a comprehensive reference of experimental specific rotation or optical rotation data. It can be a published literature review, a free web database with API access or one that permits scraping, or even a table on a web page with references. ChemSpider pages link to outside sources...

22:27
@repurposer Thanks for noting that.

@BountyHunter If @Geoff Hutchison doesn't know the answer to my question, I would be surprised if anyone else did.

@Mr.Why Sorry about my silence; I'll respond in a few hours when I'm not busy.
