no that fond of math, but I got off the a bad start with my education in math so that's a lot to blame
in calc 2 now and I'm at the point where i don't mind it now
I can see that logic for not liking chem. Although I think to go with 'hate' based on that is a bit much.
take a physics class and see you are gonna love it and forget chemistry!!
eh... idk about the last part of that... I've only been in love with chem for most of my life lol
but I will have phys next semester
what you mean by last part?
next school semester, this fall, I will have a physics class
oh!! :\
thats why i see no physics question on your profile!
00:05
yea lol
Need it for a computer engineering degree. That was my next choice after chem...
you have asked many questions on math SE
yea www'
*lol
are you taking degree in chem
like phd or any other
right now no. I've just mostly done general classes so far, next school year I'm going to have to make up my mind for sure what I'm going for. I want to do the chem but.... computer engineering seems like a better choice, personal interest aside. Thought about maybe dual majoring in chem and computer science instead.
are you 27?
00:10
26. hell, did put in some random shit there too? Ok, I need to fix this stuff.....
haha

@Caesium welcome to the Table!
It's unfortunate that you met at a time that this chat wasn't active.
@DeNiSkA Well, chemistry hates you too.
@Caesium-133 High five
@DeNiSkA I actually think the physics they teach in schools is uselessly impractical.
At least a sizable portion of the chem they teach is applicable to real chem too.
BTW, dude, what were you doing up 4 in the morning?
@IͶΔ yes! i think chem hates me that's why i am not able to understand
@DeNiSkA Are you on desktop?
yes, why?
You can reply to chat messages by hovering over a message and clicking the bent arrow on the right.
oh! i see.....
but i don't want to use mouse !!
@IͶΔ and physics is the subject which demands love i mean everyone to understand physics has to study physics on his own, no third party teacher or school is required to teach!! :\
06:02
Every subject demands love.
How do you think linguists keep interest in what they do?
but chemistry demands time waste !!!(lol)
So does physics.
So does math, or any other subject.
And I call that devotion, thankuverymuch
::*laughs*:: i think you got angry?
Nope
That's just how I roll
oh!! then it's ok
in chemistry we have lots and lots of exception and almost no law is totaly successful in giving its definition
06:07
That's because they're not laws. Merely guidelines.
Wow:
woah woah woah!!!
So AIWS, stuff like octet are only simplifications.
Get to some real calculations and MO and stuff and see why these stuff don't get exceptions.
Many things in science are oversimplifications.
For instance, you take the magnetic field in a solenoids to be constant.
While it is not.
that's just a method to simplify!!
06:15
In physics, they don't even bother you with the real stuff. So you happily calculate it without considering that the number you're coming up with isn't the right number.
BUT!
When you don't need a more accurate calculation, there's no need to bother yourself with it.
Same goes in math.
But if it does in the case of some easy functions, then why not use it?
L'Hôpital's rule doesn't yield useful results sometimes.
AND
Same goes in chemistry.
hey L'Hôpital's rule is just a method to simplify when you see the proof (with integration ) there you can understand why it has a drawback
Hückel's rule is a good guideline to know which compound is aromatic and which is not in planar cyclic conjugated stuff.
But it fails in the case of coronenes.
Because it's a simplification.
So the only difference is that you also study the quirks to what you study in high school chem, while you don't in physics. That's why high school chem is crappy but is still superior to high school physics IMO.
hm!! maybe at high level chemistry may get better but at my level it is just like teaching a monkey to talk
btw don't you have physics as your subject?
Yes.
only classical mechanics or (general relativity and all those super stuff)?
06:27
Relativity might be a subject next year.
then you are going to love physics!! because relativity is damn interesting!
Interesting, but again, practically useless.
I don't need to know relativity to dilute a solution in lab.
lol!!!
but if you want to travel to past you can use relativity(when something great happens)
The sane me wouldn't want to travel to past. The idle curious me, however.
well according to relativity you can't but you can definitely travel to future!!
06:34
I don't wanna go to future. I wanna make future, man
haha!!
so it means you don't have a wish to see what wil happen after 1000000 years after you!
Yes, I don't.
oh! you don't want to travel to other planet?(because loving sun is gonna die)
In 4 billion years.
Now i really think you hate physics!!
06:39
There's a difference between invoking idle curiosity and knowing something for fun.
There's a difference between knowing something for fun and learning something for fun.
And there's a difference between learning something for fun and learning it because you have to.
Stuff you say are either in the "idle curiosity" thing.
Or "because you have to" one.
They're cool and all, but they never are as cool as "knowing/learning something for fun".
well i am not good at roll but i think you are an expert!! _/ _
1 question
Only one?
if i am having an ester as a function group -COCH3 for example why don't i start counting from that carbon attached to CH3 but why i start from the carbon which is attached to that dash (-) symbol
@DeNiSkA Dash symbol? You gotta choose the longest chain of carbons. That dash means there is more than one carbon, and hence it's the longest chain.
just for representation purpose i wrote dash!!
Take this molecule Methyl-2-methylprop-2-en-oate
06:50
Actually wait. Facepalm
I mixed esters with ethers. I'm getting old.
hehe
In esters, as far as I can remember, you name it as if it's the product of a reaction between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid.
Yeah, that must be it.
The "dashed" carbon is the one for carboxylic acid.
Since it's part of a carbonyl, it belongs to the acid.
And you take the acid as the main chain.
but still you have to number the chain
You should number any chain that you need to.
and why we start counting with the carbon attached to oxygen not with hydrogen (in COOCH3 in my given compound)
06:57
Let's start over.
Divide the compound into two parts separated by -O-.
The part that has a double-bonded oxygen is the main chain, and the part that doesn't have it is treated as a substituent.
Are we clear?
yes!
There goes your naming. You can name the compound now, just like how you named alkanes, alkenes etc.
The main chain will end in -ate, since that's how ester anions (like acetate, CH3COO-) end in.
It's like dividing the compound into a cation and anion that peacefully bond.
ok !
i think i got it now!!
The page above I think might say the same thing, but less scattered.
Yeah, they're saying the same thing.
well one more thing suppose in a side chain i am having a double bond then how do you name (give example if availabe)
07:06
In the new system (as of 2014), I think you just don't do that.
Saturation comes before chain length in the new terminology, no @Loong?
Anyway, assuming you have to stick to 1993 or 2011 rules, @Den, they have their own names.
what you mean their own name?
In organic chemistry, a methylene group is any part of a molecule that consists of two hydrogen atoms bound to a carbon atom, which is connected to the remainder of the molecule by a double bond. The group may be written 2, where the '=' denotes the double bond. This structural element is also called methylidene. Many organic compounds are named and classified as if they were the result of substituting a methylene group for two adjacent hydrogen atoms of some parent molecule (even if they are not actually obtained that way). Thus, for example, methylenecyclopropene is named after cyclopropene...
oh!!! i GOT IT!
genius!

@IͶΔ Do you want to see something funny?
Maybe
check out loser.com
Aha well.
What do you think about Trump?
Well, he's another all-talk no-action dude. Big deal.
09:19
I feel that for all the current politicians!
Yeah well, politics is just not something you should like these days.
Or anything affiliated with it

@user36790 thanks :-)
Hmm, isn't it the old avatar?
@IͶΔ Indeed. Well, I had another one even before that
user116211
@IͶΔ: Your avatar reminds me of old Power Rangers.
@IͶΔ Also, Hi :D
user116211
12:24
@user36790 Yeah, they look VERY much like each other.
Your avatar reminds me of Van Gogh's paintings @user3.
@Hippalectryon Hullo
user116211
@IͶΔ This is my cute pup; yes he is a master-piece.
14:13
@IͶΔ Thanks!
14:42
@Caesium-133 Hullo!
Hullo @Mith
@IͶΔ o/ Iron man style pic
@Mithoron No not really.
I just saw that these colors match well.
And Iran's flag is green-white-red not green-red-white.
AND
it looks more like a flower this way.
Surprised me, earlier ones wasn't that showy ;)
I'm showing off
Maybe showy but still nice :)
14:55
Your eyes are nice
You mean my pic? Seems ok, at least for gravatar
15:15
Take a look at this answer: "it is less acidic, because allah made it like that u stupid kuffars." on this question: chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/9608/…
@AdityaDev Flag it then.
I recommended a deletion on review
.
Don't bring here subjects that no one likes to discuss.
You brought it to attention, and that was enough.
ok
Is it ok if I ask a question about Ice pops on chemSE
1
Q: Flavour retention in ice lollies/pops

Aditya DevHome made ice lollies lose the flavour after some time. You will be left with just ice and small amount flavouring substance. But the ones from shops retain the flavour till the very end. What is the reason for this? Do companies add some chemicals which help in flavour retention? Making the mix...

I can add some pictures to make the question more clear.
@Mith can you post a message that I can delete please? I'm testing something
15:29
Ok
@IͶΔ you can delete the above message.
Cooooool
Self-hug
@Mart I learned the "delete" spell. This chat isn't safe anymore.
HAHA :D
15:52
@IͶΔ what do you mean with that?
@Martin-マーチン I know how to delete messages now.
\o @Mart
@IͶΔ Why would you do that?

Gonna go crazy and all
:28291803 what are you talking about? ;)

Please refrain from retaliating today and tomorrow, I am really busy and on a business trip, I don't want my phone buzzing all the time :) Thank you for your kind understanding.
user116211
@Martin-マーチン me?
Anyone. But mainly Ina. I'll be available for comment on friday afternoon.
user116211
@Martin-マーチン :)
I mean I deserve harassment after I teased him, so I am just asking for a short time out.
user116211
@Martin-マーチン: England are on the verge of losing their first match in the tournament..... stay tuned for cricket is uncertain.
user116211
17:34
And that's it; everything is certain when England is playing; they lost their first match in super 10.
Why? Is it that they're too weak?
user116211
@IͶΔ No, they are not weak.....
user116211
They don't know winning
So they're super weak.
user116211
@IͶΔ No; they just don't have the habit to be on the winning side in a multi-national tournament.

Q: Should we burninate the 'iupac' tag?

bonThe iupac tag only has one legitimate usage but I consistently see it misused for questions about IUPAC nomenclature (such as this recent example). Is it really a necessary tag? I seem to spend far too much time removing it from questions where it is unwarranted.
