You see, we have a problem.

Things like bonding, we never "understand", in the literal sense.

It's just way too complicated.

Instead, we make models and understand those that fit experiment.

So we're not understanding reality; we're just trying to understand the closest and simplest stimulation of reality as we can.

So be it balls and sticks, or big bad-ass equations, we're understand a scientist's perception of reality @Cop.

So, what model are you trying to understand @Cop?

If it's drawing the Lewis structure of the sulfate ion, just draw an S with its valence electrons, add the number of electrons the charge tells you (in the case of sulfate, it's 2 extra electrons), and then draw beautiful bonds. In the case of sulfate, 4 dative bonds to oxygen atoms.

If it's MO, then excuse my lack of drawing ability in chat.

If it's hybridization, it's sp3.

I learned that in SO2 we have sp2-hybridization, but there's seemingly nowhere to promote one of the S2 electrons in S, since all the 3 of its P-slots are occupied. Probably one of the oxygens draws one electron towards itself, and this allows hybridization to happen, like here

@CopperKettle Yes, because that’s not how it works. That you do it that way in high school is just to 'explain the way' to four equivalent orbitals pointing in the tetrahedral direction. But actually it is much more appropriate to say that electrons just find the orbital that has lowest energy, and then it's us silly humans sitting at the sideline and thinking:

But if you really want to do it that way: In sp², you have a spare p-orbital; promote the electron into that.
