@ManishEarth I would like to know what triggered the deletion of the comment mentioned here:
I beleive I had commented over here. Where has it gone? Any idea @MARamezani — ChemExchange 17 hours ago
Was it flagged as obsolete? @ManishEarth

3 hours later…
06:14
@kram1032 damn ! and here i was thinking 20 wasnt possible
@kram1032 [Found this ](webmineral.com/crystal/Triclinic.shtml) too , but seems this has a smaller list , and some of the ones mentioned as triclinic in the previous link i gave you is put in monoclinic and other in this link, kinda weird... dunno which to trust
06:45
@ChemExchange Hullo @ChemExchange!
@Chem I would let go of this whole thing.
Flags usually mean there's a big deal of something wrong with the post/comment.
Unless they're because of "obsolete" reason.
ya , comments are disposable anyway, shouldn't care about them too much

Q: Why isn't dry CaCl₂ used to dry HCl gas instead of concentrated sulfuric acid?

SwastikIn our chemistry books (like Concise Chemistry), it is given that concentrated sulphuric acid is used to dry $\ce{HCl}$ gas. But, concentrated sulphuric acid is a strong oxidising agent so, why isn't $\ce{HCl}$ gas oxidised to $\ce{H2O}$ and chlorine gas? Why dry $\ce{CaCl2}$ (Calcium Chloride)...

@Gowtham Hullo!
@MARamezani hullo
@Chem thinks there's something wrong with his comment that it was deleted. Take a look at the comments of that question.
it seems i have got 300 rep in 3 days , not bad :) seems like more activity in chem , a good sign
@MARamezani well i cant really say much without looking at the original comment ...
06:53
hi
herroo
@Gowtham The original comment was something like
> @Santiago why do you think it's a homework question?
@santiago Hullo!
hunch
@MARamezani hmm, I dont know about these things, but i think letting go is the best..
07:00
I thought that too.
But @Chem is taking things tooooo seriously.
Well a lot of people do sometimes, i remember reading about a guy over in physics who was a really good contributor who left because of this whole comments-being-deleted drama...kinda sad
@Gowtham Some people get angry really easily...Like @santiago...

Q: Did anyone else notice, that users apply "pretty girl" avatars trying to enhance their chances to get answered?

πάντα ῥεῖI have seen such avatars used by particularly low rep users a lot Seems like these are nerds, and they've well conceived how to attract attention from other nerds. I don't actually know what I really want to ask about such things here. But though I'm gonna try How should we handle that (out...

@MARamezani LOL
I don't think it is opinion based
I do! I do!
07:10
that's your opinion...
A-ha!
Running in circles.
I dont see anything wrong with it, The user just likes the girl in the photo than his/her own picture :D
Actually my avatar do something similar to that, scaring people!

Q: In light of how rare the "Reversal" badge is

AlmoI think it should be called "Reversal!" With only 187 of these things in circulation, I think it could use the emphasis that it's an amazing occurrence.

@Freddy Hey that avatar was scarier than yours.
07:13
@MARamezani You mean that girl!!!
I shivered.

Q: Evaluating the risks of allowing teen moderators on the SE network

user774411I have a David vs Goliath case here involving a teen moderator on Stack Overflow. His display name is BoltClock. I'm a low reputation SO user (less than 150 points) who was recently suspended for Voting Irregularities by BoltClock. Eventually the mistake was corrected by another non-teen moderat...

@Freddy hmm seen this before ..
@Freddy I myself saw it about a month ago.
I always wander looking at the shtoopid part of meta.SE.
07:16
Have you all seen that NSFW post
Yes.
Funnier posts come along if you go some pages further.
I think that would be great
NSFW S.E. will have highest number users!
It was closed before reaching the beta, I think.

@santiago I signed up for health's beta and music fans. But after asking the first question, I got bored.
@Freddy Like a nice little boy.
@MARamezani got 271 rep there so far
@MARamezani As always can't understand question :)

@Freddy o there is a reason for that maniacal laughter
@santiago I know
What is it?
07:34
found out that I am getting published again
@MARamezani That is secret between us
Good for you. Now what does that even mean?
@MARamezani getting published ?
@Gowtham Yeah. Does it mean @san is now famous in social media?
Well that depends if the media finds interest in his research or paper :P It just means his research has been recognized after scrutiny , getting published is a hard job, congrats @santiago
07:44
@santiago Oh is it about corrosion?
it is about solar physics
NICE!
Funny how @Martin and @Geoff chipped in the meta discussion for design. Everyone else seems like a spectator now.
08:10
@MARamezani i didn't do nothing
@Martin Hullo!
@Martin You commented and answered and said tanks.
That's pretty much more than what some other guys did.
Including me...
of course i say tanks, it's polite and i am polite
It's raining!
No it's not
It is sunny and a bit windy
BTW I'm still fighting the challenge of how I could have a colored box behind a text.

@Martin \bbox.
@Martin I'll need to do something like that in, well, ten years.
Yeah, i sent you the link didn't I?
@Martin Didn't work.
@MARamezani I don't get that sorry

@Martin Nevermind.
@Martin Undefined control sequence.

OH!
WHAT THE?!
> Expanded octet is used for elements which are located below period 2 cause they have d-orbitals to expand.
Really?
Below period 2?
Arrrrrrrghhhhh
Oh no...Martin's angry! Better hide in the closet.
08:23
where did you find that?

"Expanded octet is used for elements which are located below period 2 cause they have d-orbitals to expand." Um, what?! How does Iodine expand octet then? — MARamezani 1 min ago
@Martin do you wanna write some in-your-face comment to that?
How does Bromine and Chlorine expand octet then? The point is, this statement is wrong! Wrong I say! — MARamezani 57 secs ago
meeeehhh
@Martin Let the downvotes handle it huh?
I'll leave that to you
@Martin Hmm, shouldn't the statement be the other way around?
08:30
maybee, even that... i feel not like having the same conversation all over again
@MARamezani nope, you can do it
i trust you on the matter
You'll regret...
hehehehehe
don't think so...
08:57
@Gowtham yeah that stuff was insane. However, the next largest on the list was about 8:1 and that was pretty lonely with a couple other examples around the 4:1 - 6:1s so, given all that, 10 probably still is a reasonable upper bound for my application. Thanks for your help. The most skewed thing that second list of your features is around 6:1 as well as far as I see.
09:21
@Santiago I believe it's very wrong.
huh wha?
I meant the statement.
Arrrrrrrghhhhh

Q: Which has higher priority according to Cahn-Ingold-Prelog priority rules?

confusedDoes vinyl or secondary butyl have higher priority, and why? According to my textbook, vinyl has higher priority than isopropyl, because an atom which is connected by a double bond can be treated as two identical atoms(one of them is just an imaginary atom). How about vinyl and secondary butyl? S...

Q: Upvoting and Downvoting Reputation

Why are you saying that?

hmmm how does Americium-241 detect smoke in smoke detectors
@santiago Like an Americium.
hardy ha ha haaaa
that's pretty cool
Yeah. I love Google.
10:29
hmmm I wonder if I could put that as a question-answer
@santiago I'll make sure I downvote.
lol
i think it'd be too simple
but
what chemical in the smoke causes the neutralisation of the ions?
The self-Q&A should be really good, otherwise they will just go under in all the other posts.
Or they are preferably linked to another post
I agree
but there may be a question - what chemical in the smoke causes the neutralisation of the ions?
@santiago The chemical that causes the neurtralisation.

Q: How can I use Stack Exchange as notes repository?

Manish SapariyaI have tried mails to self and text files to keeping notes in one place, which I can reuse. However I have found them getting lost as time passes by. The "Answer your own question" in Stack Exchange is good way of keeping notes to self. However if the question is simple e.g. "how to do something"...

dwb4.unl.edu/Chem/CHEM869Z/CHEM869ZLinks/www.uic.com.au/… states that "When smoke enters the space between the electrodes, the alpha radiation is absorbed by smoke particles" and world-nuclear.org/info/non-power-nuclear-applications/… states "When smoke enters the space between the electrodes, the smoke particles attach to the charged ions, neutralizing them. "
which is it???
@ChemExchange Yes. Comments are ephemeral and will be deleted if they serve their purpose
@santiago The second one is for something else, I guess.
@ManishEarth Hullo!
10:36
o/
@MARamezani nope, both for smoke alarm operation
@santiago There's some smoke filter in factories.
The second one is the how of its working.
So, the first one must be correct.
both statements are under a subheading "Operation of Smoke Detectors"
@santiago Hmm, I'm pretty sure the second one isn't for "smoke detectors". Unless, of course, the mechanism is the same, which isn't.
it is for smoke detectors
10:39
@santiago That's what the website says.
oh wait - the 2nd one is updated, from 2014, the first from 1997
Doesn't mean I'm wrong, or it's wrong. Worth a question, IMHO.
@santiago OH!
that makes sense now - more research has been done etc
@santiago Still, I'll downvote...
but still does not explain what exactly neutralises the ions
10:42
A chemical.
really? I thought it was David Hasselhoff
You were wrong.
I win.
lol
I think it may be worth a question...?
I'll DOWNVOTE...But yeah.
of course
i'm nervous
10:45
Hullo Nervous. I'm MAR.
2 of my questions have been downvoted...
fear fear fear
@santiago Really? I thought I downvoted more...Let me catch up on that...
ha!
hey @Martin you think it sounds like an awesome question?
For the record, almost all of my more than 10 vote questions have a downvote.
Some people are jealous, or they're just a punk.
that's reassuring
10:48
Hullo @Buttonwood!
Welcome to the chatroom!
@santiago sounds like a question worth asking
Or maybe you were here before @Button.
Anyways!
@Martin And a downvote.
i guess all of my questions have a downvote too
don't play with downvotes...
so, it is a right of passage?
Hello MARamezani and others. Just continue with your talk.
10:50
they are a necessary evil, but nothing to game the system
@Martin I hardly downvote anything other than homework crap.
i just use them to log my delete votes in
@Buttonwood I am actually yodelling...lol
I only downvote homework when it is from an experienced user who should know better
@Buttonwood Someone's watching me... Nervous
10:52
@ManishEarth Are you still around?
@Martin Define experienced.
@MARamezani More than 5 questions and more than 200 rep
@Martin A new definition of experienced just came out...
@Martin So you look up what their history first?
10:54
@Buttonwood Someone downvoting you too?
There's a shadow downvoting a lot of coll guys recently.
@ManishEarth great, could you define the as a synonym to the newly created , pretty please. See the corresponding meta post, @Geoff luckily jumped into action.
If you lurk enough you get an innate idea of who should know better
Oh right, forgot baout that one
always happens with tag meta posts. We wait for consensus and forget :p
@ManishEarth Should I know better? Squinting
@MARamezani There was quite some time of being absent here. I did not notice frequent downvotes so far.
@ManishEarth Well that one was lurking quite a while, and just yesterday someone had the guts to finally do it
10:55
done
@Buttonwood Let me downvote you there...
Why? and where?
I just want you to notice it.
@Buttonwood I don't need to... I use an extension, that tells me that...
@Martin btw, for unambiguous renames it's better to just ping a mod, we can do it directly
10:56
@ManishEarth DO IT DIRECTLY!
Done.
