Q: Can site users suggest some design specifications regarding graduated site development

AlphaSo here comes a good news that Chemistry SE is graduating soon. Chemistry Stack Exchange has a steady flow of high quality questions and answers, and a growing number of users contributing to site health and maintenance. You're on a consistent upward trend, and the Community Team (of which I ...

Anyone here?
@DemCodeLines yeah, hi :)
12:21
Hi I need help combing elements
For example, combine MgCO3 and HCl
@tschoppi ^
Uhm, what exactly do you mean by combining? MgCO3 is not an element...
That's one of the questions on the homework and I don't know how to do it
So you want to know the reaction of those two compounds?
Are we talking about condensed or gas phase?
Well the product.
(j/k, I'd like to see you get MgCO3 into the gas phase...)
So aqueous solution?
12:27
Idk what that means
Are your compounds dissolved in water?
That info isn't given
Well, then you have two options.
Either you let HCl gas flow over solid MgCO3, or you do the whole thing in water.
@tschoppi oh you
Which one is more likely is tied to the solubility of the reactants.
Alternatively, you just search the internet. The reaction you want is here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnesium_carbonate
12:33
boom
MgCO3 + 2HCl -> MgCl2 + H2O + CO2
heeeey @LordStryker!
<o
\o
:)
heya doing?!
Failed my exams, I'm currently retaking classes for the whole year
It's really interesting to see how well you're able to categorize the knowledge they throw at you in class when you've already been through the examination process once...
But it means I've got more time to spare, so I've got that going for me... Which is nice :)
And you? Teaching undergrads or something? Fun stuff, eh?
damn sorry to hear that @tschoppi
Yeah 400 of em. Great times.
By the way, that friend of yours never got to me...
12:38
no worries. She may have changed her mind or something (that is not uncommon with her) :P

Q: Correct way to combine compounds?

DemCodeLinesThis is a homework question, but I don't know how it's solved. The question is to "combine MgCO3 and HCl." I have an answer sheet that says the answer to this question is: MgCO3 + HCl -> MgCl2 + CO2 + H2O I don't understand how that answer was found.

@DemCodeLines I am sooooo tempted to leave an answer saying "MgCO3HCl -- There you go!"
I really need an explanation of that question and answer.
@tschoppi you have time to write up the answer?
@DemCodeLines It's really more of a homework answer that would attract close-votes in microseconds. You better write out clearly what in particular you don't understand about the question and the process for arriving at the answer.
12:45
^@tschoppi is correct about that
@LordStryker I do. But I'll wait for the edit to roll in first.
hi
heya @Omen
how is everyone?
hey :)
not too shabby, and you?
12:46
Wonderful. I cut myself shaving this morning so I have a gnarly red wound on my face lol
I am just floating around the various sites, seeing if I can answer questions
@LordStryker that is a regular occurrence for me
@Omen Apparently Astra blades don't like my face
I need to stick to Derby
I am trying to use psychokinesis to shave,... not really working
What's the difference between 2HCl vs H2Cl ?
@Omen Try alchemy next time, guaranteed results! (I mean, burnt off hair is also no hair, right?)
12:50
@DemCodeLines 2HCl denotes two 'HCl' molecules
@DemCodeLines 2HCl is two molecules of HCl, H2Cl is a (nonsensical) molecule that has 2 hydrogen and 1 chlorine atoms.
H2Cl is a molecule which has 2 hydrogens
@tschoppi thats how I make coffee... its starts out as lemonade
How can 2HCl be balanced though?
Aha, the classical supra-ethereal lemon-to-coffee transmutation!
@DemCodeLines Start slowly: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoichiometry
Maybe ask your teacher to explain it one more time to you?
12:53
@tschoppi it is unintentionl... I pressed THAT button on the microwave
@Omen Well sucks, then you were stuck with coffee for the morning but wanted lemonade? See kids, that's what happens when you don't understand the underlying theory of the things you do...
@tschoppi especially by pressing 'that' button
getting back to chemistry, I have started reading about photochemistry
complicated stuff, imo
Like so many things, it's initially very easy to get a grasp on... But the devil is in the details.
Why is H3PO4 called "phosphoric acid" rather than "phosphic acid"? Oxoacids you change the anion from "chlor-ate --> chlor-ic" but apparently with phosphorus it goes from "phosph-ate --> phosphoric".
is it ever - i am weird though - I love the complicated
13:04
@LordStryker Beats me. Some of these names have weird mythological (read: historical) roots
they were probably trying to use the microwave
The more I learn about chemistry, the more I realize chemistry isn't really a collection of rules. Chemistry is simply a collection of exceptions to the rules.
sounds like atmospheric science
Chem.SE is a very nice looking and interesting site
@Omen We just graduated so we're going to get a brand new design!

Still can't believe that. It seems like I joined just yesterday, this site has been in beta for aaaages!
13:07
YThis is awesome news! \
@tschoppi I know right?! 2 or 3 years now
I remember when we FIRST launched. I created the first chat room :)
I am thinking of joining
Sadly its been 2+ years and my rep is so low. I really need to start answering more rather than chatting and just leaving comments.
low rep? does not matter - I have seen that comments help and chatting creates a very friendly atmosphere
@ManishEarth heya man! \o
13:09
o/
@Omen its all about dat rep
lol
n it -4- da rep
@LordStryker My thoughts exactly. But then again, it's much easier to write a question that gets listed on the HotBar than to write an answer that gets the equivalent amount of rep. There it really is quantity. Maybe adopt the Weird Uncle Al style?
hey @ManishEarth
Answer only in haikus or sonnets
13:10
or in Klingon
haiku is 5-7-5?
yes it seems to be
that haiku has this rhythm
of five seven five
i just found haiku. its indeed five seven five. I love @ManishEarth
bonus rep for haiku?
2
lol
13:12
sprinkled a little stardust on y'all
okay, I am convinced, I am gonna join up
ONE OF US ONE OF US @OMEN IS ONE OF US!
it's an omen... oh wait...
Oh you @LordStryker
Sprinkling star dust on us all
When will we grow up?
what's this "grow up" you speak of?
13:14
@tschoppi Hopefully never.
:D
I was stuck for the last line and just picked the first words that fit
oooh and I have thought of a question
@Omen its where the real world finally beats you into submission
Which, incidentally, is the technique used by old ancient japanese haiku wizards
lol @tschoppi I just realized you're still on 5-7-5
13:15
@LordStryker HA! it can not, for I am the BOOGIE MAN
OOGIE BOOGIE BOOGIE BOOGIE BOO!
wtf @LordStryker....
@Omen approves
@LordStryker tested. @Omen approved.
I can get behind that
@LordStryker are you assimilating to your freshmen by adopting similar behaviour patterns?
@tschoppi Heh, my freshmen are still wiping their noses and sucking their thumbs
13:17
But soon you will show them to the bliss that is the computer as a working station
just as long as they don't expect us to change their diapers
i think I have a reasonable question
@Omen Then go ahead and post it :)
hmm can I ask for advice (Chem is out of my field, but I love it for its detail)
ONE OF US ONE OF US
3
bwahahahaha
13:19
@Omen you can always post and we can edit from there
sounds like a plan -stay tuned
I tabbed out for five minutes and what is this I don't even
:p
aw I love it when I get a little golden star
@ManishEarth You've really been missing out on the fun!
@LordStryker I'd like to request your opinion on my gold question. Do you think that wildcat has a point? I just get negative vibes and find my judgement to be clouded on this issue, so some outside perspective would be greatly appreciated.
29
Q: Why is gold golden?

tschoppiBulk gold has a very characteristic warm yellow shine to it, whereas almost all other metals have a grey or silvery color. Where does this come from? I have heard that this property arises from relativistic effects, and I assume that it has to do with some distinct electronic transition energies...

I think that is a great question!
13:25
@tschoppi I think that Wildcat (and others of us) have been seeing an increase in questions that either are too broad, have an answer that can easily be found elsewhere, or that are downright ridiculous (e.g. "Can you explain quantum mechanics to me?"). I think that in light of this recent influx of 'problematic questions' some people are going to be a little antsy and on-edge. I think your question is a good one. I read it and thought to myself "well its all about relativistic effects"
but I didnt know or I dont remember much more than that so I've enjoyed the replies that your question has received.
@tschoppi In short, I think your question is a valid one.
3k views and highly upvoted responses. Great question indeed.
@LordStryker Thank you for your insight.
It was clear to me that I could have researched the question myself and answer it right away, accept the answer and walk away. But I felt the question had great potential, and it is nice to see it unfold.
@tschoppi Judging by the vote and view metrics, its one of our best questions.
heya @GraceNote \o
wut up dawg?
What exactly is a community manager?
okay, folks, get ready to be mortified, here be the question - chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/16673/…

Q: Who are the Community Managers, and what do they do?

jcolebrandWho are the Community Managers? What do they do? What is their relationship to the "Community" user? Return to FAQ index

@LordStryker Actually I have a chemistry-related baffling and pondered the appropriateness to ask on the site about it.
well ask away
@LordStryker I have now entered the foray that is Chem.SE... chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/16673/… - not in haiku...sorry...lol
@Omen Interesting question. I remember seeing these types of experiments on YouTube
I actually did one... it is spectacular
I observed a peculiar reaction when I added French Vanilla creamer into some rasberry ginger ale in a fit of random experimentation. I noticed a much quieter but essentially identical end result with milk. It's a curious reaction and I thought to ask what exactly may be the cause of it. Naturally I'd be more detailed in an actual question body.
13:35
oh and feel free to edit the living suitcase out of that and any questions and answers that I do
looks like enthalpy drops dramatically at each step
@Omen A process is not the cause, but the pathway...
3
@GraceNote I am sort of confused. You added F.V. to ginger ale and also milk. What did you observe from this mixing of liquids?
Two separate concoctions - creamer and ginger ale, and then milk and ginger ale.
It created this very weird, airy foam substance. Very flavorless, too, I might add, I might as well have been eating physical air for all the good that did. In what few attempts to actually succeed that it was, since that stuff does not want to actually flow with the liquid it sits atop.
In the case of the creamer, it was an almost explosive reaction, a small amount of drop of the creamer was enough for the reaction to fill up half the glass and spill off the top in less than a second. With milk, I didn't notice any sort of reaction until minutes later, when fizz faded away, that this foam was left (in a much smaller amount) at the surface of my drink.
@tschoppi that is awesomely zen
13:40
o/ @GraceNote
yo
@Omen no haikus? for shame.
@ManishEarth i am on a diet
a prose diet? so sad.
13:41
@tschoppi I liked the question, since I was asked the same one in class last spring. Now I have to deal with wildcat who seems angry for some reason
OH C'MON YOU GUYS! MILK AND GINGER ALE PEOPLE! LETS STAY ON TARGET!
@ManishEarth yeah, I know - it is like the soup diet, but with a thesaurus instead of toast
heya @GeoffHutchison
I enjoy your answers very much.
@tschoppi That sounds so Zen
@Omen @ManishEarth It really does :)
13:43
@GraceNote I guess it curdled, but I don't see why it would do so explosively
it is worthy of a star
As for milk and ginger ale, ask away. Sounds like it could go viral
^ What @GeoffHutchison said
I shall ask. I will also include a warning to folks that apparently this stuff is really hard to actually get out of your containers and even the sink.
@GeoffHutchison Milk and ginger ale sort of tastes like a cream soda. Used to have it when I was a kid.
13:44
^ what :17829083 said
dang it!
ahahahaha
A posset (also spelled poshote, poshotte) was a British hot drink of milk curdled with wine or ale, often spiced, which was popular from medieval times to the 19th century. The word is mainly used nowadays for a related dessert similar to syllabub. In the Middle Ages, it was used as a cold and flu remedy and was more of a drink than a mousse. == Introduction == To make the drink, milk was heated to a boil, then mixed with wine or ale, which curdled it, and the mixture was usually spiced. It was considered a specific remedy for some minor illnesses, such as a cold, and a general remedy for others...
hm
dern Brits
@ManishEarth In spite of the name, "ginger ale" has about as much to do with ale as "root beer" has to do with beer.
My best scientific guess is that the CO2 and weak acid in ginger ale messes with the milk.
@GraceNote You're drinking the wrong root beer.
@GraceNote oh right, ginger ale. Forgot :p
13:46
so, my question is good, ja?
@LordStryker This is true enough considering the only bottle we have right now is this atrocious diet stuff.
@GraceNote In that case, ginger ale is carbonated and acidic. The milk reacting with the carbonic acid might trigger the fizz from suddenly coming out
though thinking about it milk reacting with carbonic acid should do the opposite
Sounds all the more reason I should post a full question with possibly pictures!
One of us! One of us!
Ginger Ale and Milk
It will give you something nice
If you are prepared
2
13:49
@GraceNote you have to write it in haiku
Taco bell and Cheese
will make your morning intense
I hope you're ready
2
@GraceNote yay
@LordStryker LMAO :D
Maybe we should have an official SE:Chem "Speak in haikus" day.
or like yoda, speak we must
so @LordStryker, is there anything I should do to my post to improve it, or it be okay as it is?
13:54
an idea this is
follow the five-seven-five
like yoda on haiku day
i haven't seen this room this populated in a long time its amazing
it's an omen of things to come....
@Omen I see no problem with your question 'as-is'. Once more of the community looks at it (and perhaps discusses it), edits may tweak it but there is nothing wrong with it for now that I can see.
I'm wasting my small spurts of free time in chat while I put together my lecture that i have to give in an hour
souns good - I am glad of Dissenter's comment - helped quite a bit
@LordStryker wing it, yoda style
rofl
that song is now in my head
untz-untz-untz-untz-untz-untz-untz-untz bootz-n-catz-n-bootz-n-catz-n-....
LMAO
13:58
@LordStryker I'm still trying to read through your superb answer concerning the dipole of cis-2-butene...
@tschoppi :) I'm still waiting on my CCSD(T) freqs to finish (supercomputing center went down on monday for upgrades so I may have lost it all)
@tschoppi link!

@LordStryker I hope you have not lost your data, that would seriously suck
> Mini Research Project Time
^ uh oh @LordStryker are you @TerryBollinger in disguise?
14:00
who is @TerryBollinger? O.o
@LordStryker I reeeally like your booktabs tables :)
@tschoppi Oh man its all about the booktabs. \toprule, \midrule, \bottomrule and DONE
none of this \hrule\\ \hrule crap
yeah
@LordStryker user who gives very long answers
@ManishEarth Ah. Well I've got some really short ones lying around here somewhere....
14:01
@LordStryker I sometimes wish I knew the computational methods I know now just for proving teachers wrong :p
HOLY ODD SOCKS!
@ManishEarth if its a small enough project post a question and I can pound out some numbers for ya :)
haha
but I know them now :p
I and my project advisor had a fun "you're wrong! no, you're wrong!" battle today. We have them often (it's all in good fun, and usually some interesting conclusions come out of it)
@ManishEarth You got the questions honey I've got the machines :)
dude, that is an epic answer!
14:03
@Omen I appreciate it
But now I actually know how to simulate stuff so I can prove him wrong. Then again, he has the esoteric ability to cite these things known as "papers"
@LordStryker that answer should be published :p
@Omen you may like this one then (its a little less rigorous)

A: Does hydrogen peroxide exhibit intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions?

@ManishEarth I'm more than certain cis-2-butene has been examined before. besides how would be sell the story to a journal? whats so important about cis-2-butene and its dipole? :O
@LordStryker it's the cure for cancer?
shrugs
since when did stuff have to be important to get published? :P
14:05
@LordStryker I have a bit of reading to do methinks! I love detail - literally, I am one of those people that love to know as much detail as possible
"Studies have shown a potential indirect connection between carbon and hydrogen containing compounds. We examine the cis-2-butene model compound in an effort to gain insight into the physical properties of this related molecule"
3
@Omen Hopefully the details I left are accurate then :P
ahhh @ManishEarth, the art of making bullshit sound technical :P
2
I tend to do that in my field of research (where they foolishly awarded me a PhD in)
@LordStryker sounds exactly like my field
@LordStryker this is a really amazing answer. I have to go soon for some TA work, but I'll probably finish reading it there
@LordStryker eeexactly
Alrighty @ManishEarth. We'll catch you later. Thanks for the kind words and enjoy :)
this is by far, the liveliest, friendliest and most informative chat I have dropped in on!
14:09
In which a user does more research than all Stack Overflow askers combined http://chemistry.stackexchange.com/a/16374/22 @StackExchange @StackChemistry :D
2
@ManishEarth I am very flattered
@Omen I know right?! Its been (what seems like) ages since this room has been this lit up.
I second that motion!
@LordStryker Then again, there's a good chance that the sum total of research done by Stack Overflow users is 0 :P
Read it.
Repped it.
Didn't regret it.
3
lol
14:11
@tschoppi thats no haiku
@tschoppi doesn't regret killing a few syllables in there
no, that;s a rap!
poor syllables
Haha
eh... syllables, they had it coming
14:12
Well, I hate to leave you guys at such a prime time, but I seriously have to get some work done. My .h and .cpp files await :)
Coding editor
Very calm environment
Damn semicolon
@tschoppi knows whats up
@ManishEarth keeps things all good
@LordStryker smiles
3
dont you mean "dat semicolon"?
we'll see ya @tschoppi
@LordStryker both. I transitioned from heavy coding in Python back to C++ and I consistently try to get g++ to compile my pseudocode xD
Yeah, I'll be 'round
best. chat. ever!
@Omen and its all ending soon! :( :(
@LordStryker only for now!
14:15
Was nice talking to you, have a good day. (And don't despair, @LordStryker, even freshmen get better at chemistry)
room topic changed to The Periodic Table: Haikus are awesome / Chemistry is more so / pull up a chair (no tags)
that is so cool @ManishEarth
@ManishEarth you messin with MY room bro?!
might have missed a semicolon syllable
you wanna go?!
:)
14:16
lol
lmao
I actually just typed that, "might have missed a semicolon", then I realized that I wasn't talking about code :p
i feel inspired to challenge myself to answer a question or two
@Omen Go for it!
@Omen We need more people like you signing up (meta.chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/484/…)
I appreciate that :)
I live and breath science.... it is my favourite pastime, hobby, profession, drink and sport
14:22
@Omen that sounds like super intense
oh yes, if I were in the presence of someone like David Attenborough I would probably have a nerdgasm
I have to get this lecture wrapped up in the next 20 min. Keep it real my friends its been fun.
@LordStryker you have a great day!
You too sir. I will be on and off chat and SE:Chem like normal. Man I love this room when its populated. Its always a good time.

3 hours later…
17:11
ah those days when you're on SE and all you feel like is

You know, you do get a badge for using up your votes. ;-)
There's a badge for that?!
I know there was a badge for visiting the FAQ section of the site. I totally missed out on that one (its since been disabled, grrrrr)
Suffrage: Used 30 votes in a day
lol, am about to go to bed... its 3:15am tomorrow here and my keyboard is going to sleep
@Omen oh my
I get up everyday at 5AM lol
17:14
insomnia
ouch
well, tbh i usually just drink myself to sleep otherwise i have a hard time (well, that used to be the case a few years ago, not so much now)
i was going to try watching an infomercial - they bore me to sleep...
@GeoffHutchison I think there's a badge for upvoting all of my stuff ;)
I recommend reading various textbooks. Atkins P-Chem did really well at inducing sleep.
OHHHHHHHH
(Levine for me)
17:16
lol - however, I get excited over log tables
Have some stardust
@Omen In my neck of the woods we call that a "problem"
@LordStryker yes, maths problems! exciting as heck!
I have also been writing up a paper
is there a badge for rampant insomnia?
Maybe you can suggest new badges as part of graduation?
@Omen only if you haiku your question ;)
if only I could
write a good chemistry haiku
for LordStryker and co.
17:26
if only @Omen
could write a decent haiku
about chemistry
(shift-enter lets you do multiple lines in one post)
lol
I totally donked mine up man. I can't count :(
you need the log tables!!!
you get a log table! and you get a log table! everyone gets badass log tabbleessssss!!!!
mine has logarithmic swear words
and a fold-out exponential centre-fold...
17:29
@ManishEarth kind of going back to what we were talking about (see the following link)
I put this quote (from the second and third panel) in my dissertation
it was glorious
ooooooooh yeah!
hey, I got another upvote!
:)
@Omen your eye scared me the first time I saw it
lol, its how I keep an eye on everything
oh ho my knee is getting sore from all the knee slappers I've been reading today
badum tsh!
so, you're in knee-d of medicine?
17:36
knee-ther medicine or street drugs can help me meow
that sounds catastrophic...
(omitted)
eh, I take that back
That could be really offensive to some
lol, puns can get that way sometimes
funny story -
"punny story"
when i went for my walk today, I saw a bunde of workmen singing karaoke on the side of the road
17:41
i bet those guys are a fun bunch to hang with
I have to run to my next class. ugh my voice is going to give out its so dry
