Q: The teacher insists that iodine oxidation number in iodate ion is 7

aiagWhat started as this question Is it possible to use the school supplied algorithm to build the Lewis diagram of the iodate ion? continued with an email from the teacher, where they confirmed that the octet rule has to be followed and also mentioned that the oxidation number of iodine in iodate is...

We have a severe case of amirite here..
This guy doesn't even want to learn anything. He just wants to be proven correct. ._.

Maybe it’s the taste of the initial victory? A Pyrrhic victory?

@Jan You have to own those mistakes, they make you stronger! And ignore the rest. We're all humans, we make mistakes every time we breathe...

!!Wiki/ionization energy

The ionization energy (IE) is qualitatively defined as the amount of energy required to remove the most loosely bound electron, the valence electron, of an isolated gaseous atom to form a cation. It is quantitatively expressed in symbols as X + energy → X+ + e− where X is any atom or molecule capable of being ionized, X+ is that atom or molecule with an electron removed, and e− is the removed electron. This is an endothermic process. Generally, the closer the electrons are to the nucleus of the atom, the higher the atom's ionization energy. The units for ionization energy are different in physics...

!!Wiki/ionization constant

An acid dissociation constant, Ka, (also known as acidity constant, or acid-ionization constant) is a quantitative measure of the strength of an acid in solution. It is the equilibrium constant for a chemical reaction known as dissociation in the context of acid–base reactions. In aqueous solution, the equilibrium of acid dissociation can be written symbolically as: H A + H 2 O ⇌ A − ...

Q: Are educational questions off-topic?

mhchemLooking at https://chemistry.stackexchange.com/help/on-topic, I cannot find a clear answer if educational questions are off-topic, like a teacher asking for an alternative way to explain a certain concept to his/her students.

Q: Is "rendered output" for an edit supposed to show markup?

MaxWI try to approve some edits. Often if the edit really improves the text depends on how the new markup will be rendered. Selecting "rendered output" I just see the markup, not the rendered output. Why? Bug? Problem with my browser (Firefox)?

@orthocresol: This is not correct for a non-ideal gas. — Chester Miller 15 mins ago
Hmph. He did not read it...
