I didn't know there are methyl groups on it
I thought it was just $\ce{NH2}$ groups

Jan
@ringo If there were no methyl groups, it would not be as good a sponge as there would probably be a cyclic hydrogen bond between the nitrogens.

@Jan that makes a lot of sense
Someone just showed it to me in passing and I must have forgotten
So much censorship going on here
:)

Question for the chat:
I
oops

Jan
Yeah, I’m just trying to find out a proper name for ‘epoxybenzene’ without resorting to the standard solution (= asking @Loong)
@gannex You? ;)

Question for the chat:
I've been reading Fggis & Hitchman's Ligand Field Theory and its Applications (@orthocresol I know you know this book) and, as the cover kind of implies, it only has Tenabe-Sugano & correlation diagrams for the electronic spectra of tetrahedral and octahedral complexes. Does anyone know if Tenabe-Sugano diagrams exist for square planar complexes?

Jan
@gannex I’m willing to bet my thesis on it.

@Jan ?

Jan
Not that one @ringo.

!!img/7-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]hepta-1,3,5-triene

11:10 PM
Oh... you must mean that other one that came up when I looked up epoxybenzene

No result found.

Get it together @Chemobot!!!

Jan
Actually, it’s probably !!!img/7-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]hepta-2,4-triene
I think, there should be hydrogens on the bridgehead.

Would it still be benzene then?

Jan
It’s the oxidation product of benzene by the cytochrome P450 (or whatever they’re called) enzymes.

11:12 PM

This one?

Jan
Yeah that one.
One last try @Chemobot: !!!img/1,2-epoxybenzene

@Jan I agree. Obviously they are out there, but I just wonder why I can't find them anywhere. The Figgis & Hitchman book seems to be a top reference for electronic spectra of TMs, but it doesn't mention D3h or D4h T-S diagrams at all.

!!!img/7-Oxabicyclo(4.1.0)hepta-2,4-diene

Jan
Damn, forgot an exclamation mark.

It happens to us all
aha!
:O where did it go!
@Jan I think I found it
!!!img/7-Oxabicyclo(4.1.0)hepta-2,4-diene

Jan
Three exclamation marks means @Chemobot will delete it after 90 seconds ;)
I saw it before, don’t worry ^^

Ohhh
Ok ok just wanted to make sure you weren't spending more time on it than necessary

Q: Is Jet Fuel/Kerosene still toxic after drying out?

weidlerA friend of mine is currently living in India. The people she is living with just treated the wooden door with either kerosene or jet fuel (its not clear which of the both, as the language barrier makes communication rather difficult). We do now wonder if touching or even being close to this door...

Personal medical question? Tough call for me …

Hmm... I don't think so... more like a safety question
Similar to lab safety
Actually... I'm not sure either... I wouldn't recommend anyone to cover their door with any sort of chemical
I'm gonna pass the buck to @Loong

Do I look like Harry S. Truman? ;-)

Q: Why is bond-breaking endothermic?

Tom BrooksWhen electrons gain energy they become more excited and move to a higher energy level, which increases the tendency of an atom to form a bond with another atom. Thus, surely bond making requires the absorbance of energy? Equally when electrons lose energy they drop to a lower energy level, whic...

To a question of score 0, mind you.
It was score –1 before I decided to drop a vote because while OP doesn’t explain how they arrived at their axiom, they at least do a good job arguing xD

One of the healthy site statistics on Area 51 is an average of 2.5 answers per question
At least they argue at all... lol

Jan
Given that I would guess our answer rate to be just under one, I think a seven-answer question is a required outlier ;)
Oh yeah, it’s only six answers for the system. One has been deleted ;)

Believe it or not, ours is actually 1.5!
