Only probably
Let's write a probability function for it

Once more (different topic), Physical chemistry anyone?

Q: Why is absolute zero unattainable?

Aaron AbrahamWe were dealing with the Third Law of Thermodynamics in class, and my teacher mentioned that it is physically impossible to attain a temperature of zero kelvin (absolute zero). When we pressed him for the rationale behind that, he asked us to take a look at the graph for Charles' Law : His a...

I'm a little confused, the bit labelled "EDIT 2" has the details.

@AaronAbraham Didn't you get the answer to that one?
@AaronAbraham Make it a different question
Link to the original.

@M.A.R. Ah well, my question... evolved .

It shouldn't.
That would invalidate or make incomplete the existing answers.

[Unrelated: Stop @ortho 's graduation XD ? So...where should I position the sniper team? ;) ]

@AaronAbraham That's already taken care of.

Zhe
7:24 PM
When's he graduating?

6 hours ago, by orthocresol
Tomorrow.
Although it's 'never' now. MWAHHAHAHA

Wait. @M.A.R. YOU'RE RUBISCO!!!!???
The heck!

@AaronAbraham I AM RUBISCO!!!!

(Actually, I was wondering why I hadn't seen Rube in a while...)

Zhe
@AaronAbraham I don't understand your confusion about absolute zero...

7:29 PM
So...Rube, what exactly is the username @M.A.R. supposed to signify? (Ode to Martin?)

@AaronAbraham No, it's my initials

@Zhe I'll get to the point: a lot of sources tell me at absolute zero you have NO molecular motion. But my idol mentioned that at absolute zero, you don't have zero motion. These ideas contradict each other. Which one's right?
Whew..
@M.A.R. I've got a strong feeling the 'M' is for a Mohammed....

It is.

Oooh, what's the 'A' and the 'R' then 3:) ?

Zhe
Wait wait wait

7:33 PM
I've been waiting...for a while now actually...
:P

Zhe
At absolute zero, you are in the lowest energy state
Zero energy does not mean zero motion
That would be a violation of the heisenberg uncertainty principle

Now you wait...

@AaronAbraham Don't push your luck

O:)
Um...heh heh?
@Zhe But what's with the whole idea of no molecular motion I keep hearing/seeing everywhere?
@Zhe Also shouldn't zero kinetic energy imply zero motion?

Zhe
no

7:36 PM
?

Zhe
Do you know any quantum mechanics?

Depends on how you define "any"...

Zhe
When I say the words harmonic oscillator, does that answer your question?

@AaronAbraham Well, you should've guesses since @Cowp calls me 'Mamad'.

@Zhe but there is kinetic energy associated with a harmonic oscillator! Right? (At least that's what I learnt In classical mech..)

7:38 PM
Diluted nitric acid will corrode steel, while concentrated nitric acid will not. Why??

Zhe
Yeah, but you can't get rid of it

@Vedant Passivation?
@Zhe Is this a paradox? ._.

Zhe
No
The lowest energy state of a quantum harmonic oscillator has motion
It's not static

@M.A.R. I was NOT aware he called you 'Mamad'...

Zhe
It has energy $\frac{1}{2}\hbar \omega$

7:40 PM
._.
Give me a minute...my head's buzzing...

@AaronAbraham Pfft you're a newbie. There's whole history about MAR's nicks

A WHOLE history

@Mithoron Well detective...he was DEAD when I joined...
@M.A.R. Isn't it like...midnight over there?

Zhe
@Vedant yeah, it's particle in a box

7:45 PM
the energy of each particle would be at its ground state @Zhe

?
What's that supposed to mean? O.o

@AaronAbraham me??

There is still energy at that state - called zero-point energy.

Ah well, I'm off to bed...sorry Ved. Gute Nacht, mein Iranisch enzyme @M.A.R. ;)

7:48 PM
@AaronAbraham good night
same here
@AaronAbraham where do you live

Zhe
See ya
@Vedant This is why we should teach quantum mechanics in high school instead of whatever it is we teach now... :(

what??? @Zhe

Zhe
Well, if Aaron had some basic QM under his belt, he wouldn't have his question.

maybe everyhting is a paradox!

Zhe

For who likes organic chemistry I recommend this book store.elsevier.com/product.jsp?isbn=9780124297852
A little expensive but really good

Zhe
@9-BBN +1
That is a great book
Though I donated my copy after I left chem

@9-BBN Almost 90 euro, cheap as water :D

Zhe
8:26 PM
Yeah, you should've seen the trove I donated
Silvertein spectroscopy book
Anslyn phys org
green and wuts Protecting groups
clayden orgo book

@AaronAbraham Now midnight

Zhe
9:09 PM
@M.A.R. Where are you?

@Zhe fast at what?

Zhe
commenting
I was about to add a comment to some question and you sniped me.

hey does anyone know if throwing candy corn into 18 molar hydrochloric acid is interesting at all
hmm
maybe I should have started with "hello"
20/20 hindsight

Zhe
Is throwing anything into 18M HCl interesting?

good point
darn

9:18 PM
Well I guess it sometimes is

Zhe
It's arguably at least mildly interesting in sulfuric acid
Though I wouldn't throw it in

well I have a LOT of candy corn
and nothing to do with it

Zhe
There is the trash can

that is rapidly emerging as the only option

Zhe
I mean you can give it to others, but then they have the same problem

9:21 PM
heh exactly
that could be a good chemistry question
"why is candy corn so horrifically terrible?"
I'd rather eat spoonfuls of table salt

@orthocresol Your filter failed, there's another Nadine question

@Zhe I just spend a lot of time here ;)
@Mithoron Sadly there exists no such filter.. gosh..
UGH
@Mith did you notice this Li Zhi guy?
He's rapidly becoming our second Nadine, he already has four accounts... the only difference is that his answers are (debatably) passable...

9:46 PM
@orthocresol Maybe for a moment, but didn't notice that

What the
It's not just four

Zhe
10:09 PM
Dammit @orthocresol. Comment sniped again

Sadly comments don't give rep, or else I'll be swimming in it.
I am guilty of commenting far too often when I should really be posting answers. Part of it is I don't really want to have to commit myself to a possibly protracted discussion if OP has further questions, etc.

@orthocresol So what should I say then :D

@Mithoron It's bad practice actually. I usually end up deleting my comments if those questions get good answers, so at least that avoids some clutter.
Oh well. I just have had too many experiences where I write what I can, and then OP just asks some weird question that I have no clue how to answer... perhaps that reflects that I'm just bad at explaining stuff, but in any case I don't like it.
I must say, organic chemistry questions are usually gold mines for reputation, so go ahead and answer if you are greedy for rep...
This guy just creates a new unregistered account for every single answer he posts.
I guess it is not too bad in this case, since the posts are not terrible.

@orthocresol Well if I was, I'd have more :)
@orthocresol Strange, he has real account.

@Mithoron Think you probably chose the hard questions to answer. It's always the undergrad organic questions for some reason.
Yeah, I suspect he forgot the password or maybe just doesn't really care at all.

10:21 PM
Booooring :D
I like a bit of challenge :)
@orthocresol Still you should tell him sth for this sock-puppetry as a mod. Not that it would help much necessarily ;)

@Mith
Hi - I noticed you currently have several different accounts (1,2,3) on the network. If you would like to get these merged into one single account, just follow the steps [here](chemistry.stackexchange.com/help/merging-accounts) and the SE team will get it done for you. If you've forgotten your password, that page I linked also contains a password recovery option. Thanks. — orthocresol ♦ 2 days ago
Unfortunately, since all his new accounts are disposable unregistered accounts, I don't think he sees anything posted on his answers. Likewise commenting on the original account's posts won't get anywhere. :(

@orthocresol He should see as long as he's under one account

Q: What should a freshman student focus on the most when studying sciences?

user36578I'm a struggling science student. My teacher is used to educating AP classes, and as a freshman Honors Science student, I'm not yet equipped with the knowledge to somehow know exactly what kind of strategies I should use to study the material provided. I have talked to my teacher, but he has a fa...

@orthocresol Just flagged :D

10:42 PM
@orthocresol how is it determined which account will be the main account? how is the rep preserved?

@DHMO Huh?

@orthocresol when you merge two accounts

I don't know the details. That used to be an action available to site moderators, however it was changed a few years ago and now only the SE community team can do it.

hi @orthocresol @Mithoron @pentavalentcarbon @DHMO

alright
@ToddMinehardt hi

10:44 PM
You can probably look on MSE if you are curious. Most things are documented there, except for top-secret information.

Hola Todd

Hi @Todd

how're the first few days of your term @orthocresol? are you drunk with power? :)

@ToddMinehardt Are you implying that I'm drunk? picks up list of users to suspend

hahaha

10:46 PM
Well, there's not much to be done. The usual closing, deletion, etc... that you guys already know all about. Sometimes deleting old comment threads, and rejecting edits which are accidentally approved by careless community members.
;D

yeah i got hooked into one of those the other day - question asked in like june 2012, no answers, so i VTC. then i heard from the OP....weird
i thought, since you asked the question 4.5 years ago and have not received an answer, might be time to close it out...
@orthocresol - thanks for that edit reversal and call-out :)

@ToddMinehardt I didn't actually revert anything - you were the only person to approve it :) Anyway, everybody presses the wrong button once in a while, I know I myself have done so too many times..
Nowadays I just press skip for most of the review queues, since any other button I press instantly silences all other votes...

@orthocresol - ah, right, you get superpowers for reviews, cool perk

1 hour later…
Zhe
11:59 PM
@orthocresol Hey that's how I got 1k rep in 2 weeks
