If you believe something which is incorrect, you have a misconception. If you say something that is correct for only some stuff/molecules/ions/whatever, you're oversimplifying the real 'rule'. Chemistry doesn't have many misconceptions in its curricular system, but there are many, many oversimplifications. @Sound

because chemists don't care much for the internal structure of atoms. They're made up of quarks and stuff that are not relevant to someone doing reactions in a lab for the most part
