Great
you did phd in AUS?
@santiago: It seems that I am annoying
So good bbye
I am off

@Onthewaytosuccess you are not annoying, I am doing 3 things at once so I can not give my full attention to the chat

Q: What the breadth of expertise on Chem.SE?

santiagoIt is very clear to see that we have a great breadth of expertise on this site, alongside a great accumulation of chemical experience across the membership. On top of that, many and varied chemistry based interests. I am curious as to what people's actual expertise and experience are. Please fe...

@M.A.Ramezani ^^ just for you

11:33 AM
Hi

Hellu @BreakingBioinformatics

How is everyone?
(Including @Hippalectryon)

Fine for now :3

2 hours later…
1:32 PM
@santiago OK, so you totally made me expose myself there.
I wasn't planning to tell you my area of expertise.

Jan
@M.A.Ramezani What happened to our favourite cyclohexane molecule? D=

It reacted and deacted and preacted.

Jan
So action =O

Now what is that emoticon? Oxo?
ALL HAIL @MARTIN.
Hullo!

1:47 PM
Now I have to ask, how does it feel like to be a mod?

So what's new...
sooo.
many.
new.
buttons.
*confused*

Haha! It's gonna be fun to see you break something.
OK @Martin I wanna confess.

Jan
Buttons! =3

I must admit it.

1:48 PM
go ahead

User @Ron is my sock puppet. Please merge our accounts.

Hahaha!

I was always suspecting that
let me just bring that to the authorities...

@M.A.Ramezani mods can't merge ;-)

1:50 PM
shhhh

@MadScientist Too bad.
I revealed my secret for no good reason.

They can. They just need your IBAN :3

@Martin @Martin I wrote a congrats for you guys in the meta.
@Manish @Jonsca
BTW @Martin how can you see the flags?

you know the review queue
it's like that
but blue

1:56 PM
Screenie?

maybs later... gotta go home now
sorry...
have fun though :)

Cya at home.
@Martin-マーチン I'm gonna ask only SO many questions, you're gonna faint.

2:31 PM
Well go ahead, but remember I am new to this ;)

First, post the screenie of the flag review queue thingy. Or else.

Or a flood of questions will blow your brain up.

Haha...
you earlier had a question about flagging +1 thanks comments?

@Martin-マーチン Shiny!
@Martin-マーチン Yes.
I wanted to see if it's okay.
Comments like
> Great answer. Thanks a ton!
Are nothing but noise.
I thought it'd be trivial to flag them.

2:38 PM
It's okay, they usually add nothing to the question or answer, so they can be removed

So, should I flag the next one I see?
I might also auto-comment it.

but it's better to flag them only, if they are old and if they are in a block of comments
when they are actively distracting from other, more important comments
we don't need to remove all the noise... some of it makes us seem human...
i totally agree with @LordStryker on that one

O.o
Are we humans?
ARE WE HUMANS?!
2

Well, I always thought I am
If not, we are well designed machines :D
2

Well, the pronoun would be you, I'm just a molecule.

2:42 PM
hahaha

2,4,6-trimethyl-2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5,2,4,6-trioxatrisilinane here. Nice to meetcha.

That's the name of my new Kernel version molecule.

that is your new handle?

This.
@Martin-マーチン It is.

2:44 PM

Honor is my way son.

Well, well... I have to do some house work before bed, so I'll leave you for tonight...
Have a lot of fun...

Have fun!
Hullo @Bon @bolbteppa!
@Bolb welcome to our chatroom!
Man we get a lot of math dudes here recently

2:51 PM
Thanks, I've got the jist of math, the jist of physics, now onto getting the jist of chemistry ;)

Hah!
Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from? Which course of study do you take?

I can't right now sadly, hopefully later, thanks ;)

No problem.

3:13 PM
Is anyone else having troubles running youtube videos with the new player ?

The new player? Let me see.
@Hippalectryon I haz no problems.

:( It worked for me even two hours ago, and it suddently stopped working
the video loads, I can manually get to anytime of the video and see the right image, but it doesn't play

Q: My rude/offensive flags on insulting comments were declined

Camil StapsA new user asked a question, found out the answer, and took the time and effort to inform us about that and even make his solution clear with a diagram: Arduino IR Receiver (Answer). Now, he used Fritzing, which is clearly just not good enough for some people - sigh -: Enough with those stup...

Jan
4:31 PM
'Oh, the rude/offensive flags on marginally maybe-rude comments were declined' would have been a better title …

I agree. They weren't that insulting.
Might be language barrier.

Q: Why do some solvents bubble more than others when boiling?

JanThis question about boiling milk reminded me of my everyday lab work at the rotavap: Some solvents and solutes are feared for the intense bubbling they create while the solution is boiling — be it at ambient pressure like the milk or at reduced pressure in the rotavap. For most of the infamous so...

So, I'm mixed up.

@M.A.Ramezani Well, as long as you remain homogeneous ...

6:14 PM
THF irritates a demon.
So, does that make it a good guy?

Jan
THF irritates demons? Does that apply to lab demons, too? scared
A colleague promised me that if I mention lab demons in my defense, he will give me a bottle of my favourite pinot gris afterwards, as long as the mentioning does not dispute their existence and is part of either the presentation or answering the questions. =3
Looking forward to dat wine =3

Hah!
@Jan Scared like this?

Jan
Is that a rat? they can be scary, too xD

That's a rather small rat if it's a rat

Logical Conclusion: @wildcat is vegetarian.

6:25 PM
Maybe he doesn't need to eat

Jan
Well, wouln't it be a rather large mouse if it's a mouse?

@Hippalectryon Wut? He runs on electricity? Or NMR spectra?
(Note: NMR spectra is considered a fuel since 1888)

@M.A.Ramezani He lives off the stupid comment in this chat :3
Lots of food

Yeah$\ldots$ For sure he has no eating problems with me here.

Maybe he's obese O_o

Jan
6:27 PM
I must run on NMR spectra, too …

Interesting$\ldots$ Si is silizium in German, right @Jan?

Q: Reaction of Silicon (mon)oxide with alcohols

RolElements from the carbon group tend to form compounds with two oxygen's. Let's say I want to produce $\ce{SiO_2}$ out of $\ce{SiO}$ by mixing it with some alcohol, for example: $$\ce{SiO + CH_3-CHOH-CH_3 \longrightarrow SiO_2 + CH_3-CH_2-CH_3}$$ Is this likely to occur? at least before all the ...

Hmm$\ldots$ interesting.

Jan
6:45 PM
It is. Y?

Wut? Whaddya mean by Y?

Jan
Y = why?

Oh!
Kay, so you were asking Y for silizium or the question?

Jan
Y for Silizium (although de.wp redirects to Silicium iirc).

Its equivalent in Persian is silisium. (Of course, with an Arabic typesetting)
So I was wondering for a long time, what's the origin of that word?

Jan
6:54 PM
Likely Latin or Greek. More likely Latin ;)

What do you think about the question?
I can't think of a mechanism for it.

Jan
Not without added water, I would say.
I mean, tetraethoxysilane exists …

@Jan Yeah exactly. When there's C, how can there not be water.

Jan
Darn, I'm loosing it. I just entered the date as 24/06/2016.

O.0
Is this star wars?

6:59 PM

Jan
No that's a year ahead of today ;)

Q: Main Chatroom Etiquette Guidelines

Martin - マーチンWhen I was walking through some of the chatrooms on the network, I found that mathematics.se has some rules for their chat. I thought this might be a good idea for us as well, hence I propose these guidelines: Have fun! Our chatroom is intended for casual conversations. There is almost nothing ...

Jan
How could @Martin have written that about pinging! xD

Oh BTW @Martin what da hell is FAQ-proposed?
Does it mean you suggest it be a FAQ?
Now that you're an A-kicking mod, you could taggify it as FAQ.
Oh blast. @san now both pings @santiago and @SanchayanDutta.

Jan
So if I ping @ M, I catch you all M-usernames? x3

No, but if it's three letters, it might.
Hah!

7:12 PM
you rang?

You can't ping any two people with @Mar.
@santiago I was pinging @SanchayanDutta.

Jan
Oh goddamnit.

Now that there's a talk of pings, let me ping myself.

lol

@M.A.Ramezani You're an idiot.
2
Oh it works.

Jan
7:14 PM
Let me star that because of the self-ping =D

Haha now what would the poor souls coming here think?

Jan
Only the worst, as they should.

On the other hand, I might pin it.

Jan
Because they don't understand the beauty of lolic-chemistry anyway!

Jan
7:15 PM
I do wonder if lolic chemistry can also be considered to be chemistry done by lolis …

Jan
Right, off I am preparing nine NMR samples.

Oh Wildcat is a Russian cat. I might meet him in September then x3

8:00 PM
Hullo @Apoorv!
Welcome to the chatroom!

Thank you :)
I actually came here to ask if anyone could explain me how electropositivity of an element affects it's degree of hydration.

Hmm$\ldots$
@Apo what is that exactly?
The n in X.nH2O?
Dang I hate these terminologies.

@M.A.Ramezani yes and how does the property depend on electronegativity/positivity?

It didn't, AFAIK. Which compounds do you take into account?

MgCl2.6H2O and BaCl2.2H2O

8:09 PM
It's unrelated.
I thought determining that n is purely experimental.
Let me search something.

I was studying trends in periodic table and my book said electropositive elements are less heavily hydrated but doesn't do a good job at explaining me why

Jan
Yes, there is no way you can predict amounts of hydration of salts.

Jan
Heck it even depends on the salt.

Why?

Jan
8:11 PM
@M.A.Ramezani exactly what you said xD Purely experimental.
Because each salt is different.

Yes.

Jan
E.g. for sodium carbonate you can have the water-free salt, the monohydrate, the heptahydrate and the decahydrate.

IMO making up relations is a typical practice of textbooks. @Apo can you please provide your book's explanation?
@Jan That too.
It's crystals.
You can't predict how they're formed.
I don't think even miller indices would help.

@Jan is there any difference between their stabilities or something?

@Apoorv There typically is.
All of them are crystals. Water is trapped inside them.
Let me ask water how he likes to get trapped there.

8:15 PM
@M.A.Ramezani It says that electropositive metals resist the change from M+ -> M and hydration spreads the charge over the complex ion
and the transition is similar to M+ -> M

Jan
Well, usually you can hydrate water-free forms to hydrated forms. But otherwise I don't believe there to be any noticeable difference in stability.

Oh wait$\ldots$ so this isn't about salts?

Jan
Note that stability always will be different, because we're talking about different species. But it will still be close enough to equal.

@M.A.Ramezani it is..
@Jan i was asking about difference of stability between different hydration states of the same species

@Apoorv No I mean, aren't we talking about monovalent cations?

8:19 PM
it's just an example.. but the trend is generalized to all elements

Jan
The question I remember contained somethign about electropositivity. But sodium's electropositivity is always the same in sodium carbonate.

You might also ask something in chem.SE.

Jan
Also, are we talking about salts in crystals or in solution?

@M.A.Ramezani i thought it's too trivial to ask there but seems like i have no other option :)

@Apoorv Two of my most upvoted questions sounded too trivial to me.

8:21 PM
@Jan it is not mentioned but i presume it is in solution

Jan
One of my most upvoted answers sounds too trivial for me ;)
@Apoorv wasn't talking about @M.A.Ramezani's link, but rather your question ;)

@Apoorv WHAT?! That's a whole different story!
Well, that's easier.
No it isn't.
Yes it is.
NO IT ISN'T!
Dammit.

Jan
Relax ;)

I will just ask on the main site :)

@Apoorv typically, ions with larger charge density don't decrystallize and dissolve in water.
Because they're very attracted to the other ions in the lattice.

Jan
8:25 PM
Objection! $\ce{Al^3+}$ is tiny, yet dissolves extremely easily!

Yes.

Jan
And with that I'm going home. Spent 11.5 hours at work again. This needs to change.

Work? You mean chat.

@Jan is there any plugin I would have to install to render that properly?

Jan
On the other hand, $\ce{Ag+}$ is huge, yet there is a large number of insoluble $\ce{Ag+}$ ions. Even more so for $\ce{BiO+}$, which even forms an insoluble nitrate.
@Apoorv MathJax extension; ask @M.A.Ramezani

8:27 PM
Copy the code in Martin's answer.
Make a new bookmark.

Jan
I only spent like the last four hours in chat :þ

@Jan Emphasis on only.

Jan
@santiago Already downvoted.
Yeah, w/e. Goodnight!

@Jan Night!
@Apo if you had any problems, ping me.

8:29 PM
@Jan Goodnight
would you like to follow the question when I ask it on the main site?

Of course!

so should I post the link here?

okay no problem :)
thanks for the help, see you later

Either there's a trend with a couple of exceptions (so it's not a trend), or there's something really advanced here, or there's nothing.
Cya @Apo!
@santiago This is sad.
I'm about to go to sleep.
If the user bursts out with anger, I won't be there to laugh and have fun and flag. :(

8:33 PM
@Apoorv There might be similar question somewhere, I'll check

@Mithoron I was thinking that too - have a vague recollection of a similar question

You guys too?
I remember something like that already.
In fact, if there's anything about periodic trends, I'd think it's a dup.

well gotta go
