In taking to my child about his fears, he mentions that old trope about things in deep water that might pull him down. I replied there's nothing close to big enough in our local lakes and rivers.
But then I said to myself, if this false fear keeps him from foolish risks around deep water, all the same to me.
I then immediately thought of meme theory. The idea that mysterious creatures in the water will pull you down probably has a lot more staying power than the idea that a current might take you down river, or you simply might tire then drown.
The ones more rational about the dangers ended up drowning. Lol
