Q: How to deal with questions which an off-site search can answer?

SolusHow should we handle questions for which a quick Google or Wikipedia search would provide a great answer? This question was asked on StackOverflow.meta. The response was to answer it anyway, with the intention of making StackOverflow the best resource for those questions; so that when people do ...

Hello World

Hello @Borror

The "Not a Real Question" close answer isn't available on Skeptics?!

It's probably that way on all beta sites, but I have no idea why that would be so

@Fabian Was available on Atheism when I joined, but it was in public beta so maybe it's unique to private beta

Q: Why is the "not a real question" close reason unavailable?

Borror0I was going to close this question as "not a real question": not a real question: It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. As Fabian said in the comment...

@Fabian Would you apply the too basic rule to questions which can be answered from block quoting Wikipedia?

Only if it is really trivial stuff, I'm not a big fan of that rule
I would amend the rule to only use it if it can be answered in one, short sentence.

It's really useful on sites like Science Fiction where most questions asked can really be answered with Wikipedia. At one point it's like "You know, Wikipedia exists."

@Borror0 What do you think about those marketing questions?

Q: Multi-level marketing and Pyramid schemes. How to recognise pyramid scheme masquerading as an MLM?

Egle Today I spoke with a friend who told me about loyalty card scheme: Person has to buy expensive loyalty card and it gives him discount in listed stores and shops with a card he gets packet of discount cards he can distribute among friends. Every time person or his friend shops with this card - per...

Q: Supermarket "Membership" Cards and Data Collection

JYeltonStores more and more frequently offer better prices to customers who obtain one of their "membership" cards. Obviously such cards can be used to identify the shopper, collect data based on their purchase habits, and obviously be of great use to the company in determining prices, sales, and invent...

@Fabian I don't see how that one is on topic, in any shape or form

Both, or only the first one?

the first one
Moreover, I don't see how the distinction between pyramid and MLM is significant. In either cases, it's based on the principle that it's only worthwhile if you screw several other people over

I'd categorize that question under "scams"
And I'm wondering if we should declare those off-topic
And the second one is also off-topic IMO, it just asks why supermarkets use membership cards.

@Fabian agreed
The second is blatantly off-topic
It'd belong better on a marketing SE or whatever

6:41 PM
I've now voted as off-topic

The first one is, in the best case scenario, too broad.

I'm opening a meta post about that one

the MLM one?

yes
the other one I just voted, I don't think we need much discussion there

agreed

Q: Are questions about pyramid schemes and other scams off-topic?

FabianWe have the following question on our site about a possible pyramid scheme: Multi-level marketing and Pyramid schemes. How to recognise pyramid scheme masquerading as an MLM? Should we consider questions about pyramid schemes and other financial frauds on-topic or off-topic here?

@fabian answered, lemme know what you think
Hi @rjstelling

Hello all!

@Borror0 I haven't decided yet, I don't see any harm in allowing those questions but I'm not sure if we're not overextending ourselves.
@rjstelling Hi

@Fabian that might be possible
I'm always ready to get any of my answers on meta downvoted to oblivion

But we already have the problem that we really need experts from a very wide variety of fields, adding a few more probably won't change much

Experts isn't that much of an issue if we can get people to cite sources

7:35 PM
@rjstelling cou7ld you remove the evidence tag on your ID post?
I want to remove it, but for some reason the optino isn't there for me

@Borror0 done, my bad

@rjstelling you're far from alone. It's the third time we remove an evidence tag since @Fabian and I started to keep count

I've added an apocalypse tag, I somehow think we're going to need one ;-)

You're one year too early
or 11 years too late

I think there are enough announces apocalypses for every year
room topic changed to Skeptics: General discussion about Skeptics.SE

We really need a better name than Skeptics.SE

But we're not getting our own domain name any time soon
