Q: Bring laptop to interview?

crh225Is it OK to bring my laptop to interviews to show websites and jQuery projects I have worked on? I have done this in interviews for previous jobs and got every one of them. Now it's time to get a job with benefits at a large company. UPDATE: I had an interview today, and before I went to the int...

@enderland Actually I am really tired of the disrespect shown to those trying to help improve. I am seriously thinking about quitting this site because of it.

The comments that are intended to improve or explain why are one thing but I am really tired of the attacking the poster

I linked in the above post, Bring laptop to interview, because the asker provided an update on how his interview went. I suggested he self-answer.

@Chad If you see that, flag it. Use an "other" flag if they're a jerk in the question body text rather than a comment

Q: How should I deal with an employee sleeping with my wife?

Waiter JohnI'm the owner of a business with about 30-40 employees. Recently, I found out that one of my employees has been having an affair with my wife. The employee has worked for me for 4 years. I felt like I was his mentor, since I recruited straight from university, taught him the ropes, and promoted h...

I like the edits to that question. I think it's good now in its current state. Anyone object to me cleaning up the comments about the close/reopen?

4:44 PM
@NickC That should be fine providing the comments relate to the past version(s) of the question. I just wouldn't delete any that relate to it's current state, such as this one, since those add value to the topic and sometimes explain why the question is not closed :)

@NickC I'd say everything above Robert's comment can be removed
except for Thomas' comment

@BenBrocka The 2nd comment by GreenMatt seems OK too
It will likely detour future close voters who think relationships are off-topic

@Rachel I guess, the question is more explicitly about the matter of what to do at work now though

@Chad I hear you. This site has a really good tolerance (on the whole) of bad answers as defined by the FAQ

Q: internship before studies

telecomI have not yet begun my studies ( i have ~1year to them ( high school )), and I wonder about that whether I have some chances to find internship such as developer/engineer(whatever in IT ). I think about UK or Nederland (go there for 3/4 months), but whether non-fluent english is sufficient ?? (i...

why was this closed?
The core question(s) are both good

5:00 PM
@enderland I suspect it needs cleaned up as its very hard to tell what's being asked
I'm also unclear if "studies" refers to post-secondary education (University, college, etc) or if he's referring to high school. It would have helped if he had listed his age
(The current line was edited in by another user. The OP's exact wording was "I'am before studies ( i have ~1year to them ( high school ))")

A: Employee with no aspirations

David Espina "He has made all the money he wanted to from his ancestors, and has no aspiration to work for." This is a bias and is likely skewing or prejudicing your assessment of him. Try to remove that from your thinking the best you can. Everyone has unproductive time at work. Estimates range fro...

am I missing something or does that answer completely not answer the question?

@Rachel I'm pretty sure he meant he has 1 year to go until secondary, edited that line
still needs some work though

I'm not 100% sure this is on-topic. The essential core of the question is about a personal relationship and a personal issue. While there may be workplace aspects to this situation, none of them have been addressed in the question. Just because two people happen to work together doesn't make it a workplace issue. With that said, Waiter, I'm sorry you're in this position. This sounds terrible; however, if you can possibly [edit] your post to focus more on the workplace aspects of this, it may be more on-topic. — jmort253 2 hours ago

@enderland It offers a solution (take a step back and reevaluate if you're being prejudiced against him, and evaluate his actual work performance), although it does't answer the exact question being asked. I'd say it's OK

I think the edits this morning helped that post considerably

@BenBrocka How about this edit to get it reopened?

Q: Is OK to look for an internship while still in high-school?

telecomI have not yet begun my secondary education (I'm still in high-school and have about 1 year to go), and I was wondering if I would have any chance at finding an internship in IT, such as a developer or engineer. I was considering looking for one in the UK or Netherlands (I go there for 3/4 mont...

awww i need more rep on SO

@enderland GET TO WORK, SLACKER!

Eh. I've answered mainly questions in VBA which gets like 15-25 rep per answer.... takes a while with those :P

5:24 PM
@Shog9 I thought a Meta post would be constructive.

@JimG. about what?

@Shog9 lol I have 10K SO rep :) @enderland Let me see if I can paste it here
static class MyLife
{
[STAThread]
static void Main()
{
while (MyLife.StillKicking)
{
Thread.Sleep(TimeSpan.FromHours(8.0));
MyLife.Work();
MyLife.GoHomeEnjoyLife();
}
}

private static void GoHomeEnjoyLife()
{
Kids.Interact(MyLife);
Wife.Interact(MyLife);
}
}

Now, `Wife.Interact()` (a 3rd party assembly) is throwing a `DivorceException`. The message is:

> Expected static class `SomeNewGuy`

I tried the following:

try
{
Wife.Interact(MyLife);
}
catch (DivorceException)
{
MyLife.HaveSomeBeers();

@Rachel whoa, you have 30K - and your top tag is WPF? See @enderland, there's hope even for experts in dead-end MS tech ;-)

sweet, thanks :D

Hrrmm no code formatting in chat
@Shog9 Haha I'm seriously no expert. I just think I understand the basics of the technology and happen to be able to explain it to newbies quite well :)

lol, thanks :-) That is pretty clever. Rather surprised it didn't get more upvotes

Q: Are all "movie scripts" and "soap opera plots" on-topic on Workplace.SE as long as they involve "the workplace"?

Jim G. I'm not 100% sure this is on-topic. The essential core of the question is about a personal relationship and a personal issue. While there may be workplace aspects to this situation, none of them have been addressed in the question. Just because two people happen to work together doesn't make i...

@JimG. The thing about that question is the core of it is "How should I handle my employee in this specific situation". The question wasn't about the personal drama or the relationship, it was about how to handle the employee

@JimG. Title does not reflect the question
Fixed title, answered.

5:34 PM
@Shog9 ... and what?! your answer is leaving me hanging! :P

dammit.
fixed
Someone closed the question just as I was posting the answer; apparently that... did something

@Shog9 I closed it.
Loaded question. Regardless whether you think something might make a good soap opera plot, there is no evidence of that being at all relevant here, much less having "the workplace" be the only reason this question is on topic. — NickC 52 secs ago

@Shog9 I had an answer all written and was trying to post it too when I discovered it was closed.
But you and @enderland already said most of it, so I don't need to post a 3rd answer saying basically the same thing :)
(Also, wasn't the comment quoted in reference to an earlier reversion of the question?)

@NickC Yeah, sorry for stepping on you there. I think it's fair to discuss this, but the question did need some fixing

@JimG. Your question may elicit a lot of discussion, but the final "question" assumes so many things as to make it fundamentally unanswerable

5:38 PM
Also. @JimG. if you really dislike the answers on that question, downvote them. There is 1 downvote outside mine on the answers to that question currently
So I have a really hard time feeling as if your concerns here are valid
as you obviously think that almost all those answers are "good" answers (or, didn't read them, and based a meta post off something which you don't have the ability to support)

@Rachel I'm still puzzled by a couple of the parentheticals but otherwise it looks fine

@BenBrocka The "language level b1/b2" confused me for a minute, but I found this: deutsch-als-fremdsprache.org/en/faq/… - Figured it was something more common in Europe

Stuff like this is obnoxious to me
Sorry, but I can't agree with you on this one. The employee has demonstrated that it is in his character to betray you if he wants something. So you are at risk that he will betray your business, with the right incentive. Definitely understand the law before you do anything, but this person needs to go. — JMarsch 1 hour ago
There are some 7 people who agreed with this comment but didn't downvote

@enderland Just because you don't agree doesn't mean the answer is wrong
I tend to only downvote incorrect answers on the main site

There normally is no "right" answer on Workplace
There is "this answer is better or best"

5:48 PM
@Rachel I figured that one made sense somewhere, didn't know how to translate it though
@enderland downvote = not useful. Works on SO and Workplace

@enderland Exactly :) So I let the answers get sorted by upvotes. Pushing down answers you disagree with by downvotes is usually something I reserve for meta

Occasionally there's an answer you find potentially useful you just dont' agree with. But IMO it's more likely in this case people think it's "not bad enough" for a downvote for whatever reason. Upvotes always flow much more freely from most people

@BenBrocka I realize this. But in that case the comment effectively said "I disagree with this answer as a good idea"

@enderland Yeah.

@enderland As a side note, most people can't view downvotes, but they can view comment upvotes, so I feel a comment disagreeing with many upvotes to be far superior to downvotes

5:52 PM
@Rachel I would agree if answers were not sorted by net votes...

As I said here - http://meta.stackoverflow.com/q/125629/158605

It is far better to have an answer posted disagreeing with the question to gain a lot of upvotes, than the question itself gain a lot of downvotes. This is because instead of providing negative feedback to the person asking the question, you are now providing positive feedback which actually answers the question.
@enderland I actually have a proposal for that on MSO :) Add an option to sort meta answers by upvotes only?

@JimG. Make sure you check the timestamps and the edit history. The comment you are talking about is not about the same version that exists now, and the post was closed and then reopened. — NickC 6 mins ago
@Jim: I re-opened it because - as the quote you post illustrates - you're not the only one who made this mistake, and therefore having this question can probably avoid further discussion in the comments there. That said, I think you've missed the point of the question badly - see my answer. Try to assume good faith when reviewing questions - look for (and then emphasize) the on-topic aspect when possible. — Shog9 15 mins ago

See @jmort's answer, @Jim.

@Rachel I'd prefer something to auto-split all votes on meta posts, since I often view the vote totals on all answers

@NickC: Will do. // Hey - Can we agree on one thing though? Consistent with what @Shog9 just said, can we both agree to "assume good faith" when reviewing questions? Your initial Meta close was very abrupt. I know that past (and present) Workplace.SE moderators have had a quick trigger finger, but can we trust each other just a little bit?
@Shog9 Another great answer. Two great answers to that question. Thanks again for intervening, Shog.

5:57 PM
@BenBrocka Me too, but that proposal has been [status-declined]

@Rachel Really? Boo

@JimG. Your question was filled with all the vitriol and assumptions of a question in bad faith. No, we will not be having questions asked in bad faith as the norm on Meta.

@Rachel I'm more talking about answers on questions on the main sites. They are sorted by total votes, so by not downvoting a "bad" answer (and instead leaving a comment) you implicitly are supporting it

@JimG. Next time, focus on specifics. No one in their right mind thinks The Workplace is a soap-opera forum, so saying that just distracts from the real discussion. Following up a somewhat hyperbolic question with a very hyperbolic meta discussion isn't going to improve the situation.

@enderland I think an answer you disagree with isn't necessarily bad. The answer you linked I didn't think was bad, although I can see why people would disagree with it

6:00 PM
@Rachel My point is more there were 8 people who thought, "I disagree completely with this answer as it is a bad idea" but didn't downvote it anyways

@Shog9 Over on Programmers.SE, @Goma paints the corners. He tries to beat all spam algorithms by asking very marginal questions. That's why we need to remain vigilant.

If the sort of advice given there was bad and was what you shouldn't do for some reason (could result in lawsuit, company bankruptcy, loss of company reputation, etc), then I'd vote it down

@JimG. Don't do that

@JimG. And if Goma asks a decent question it should be left open and upvoted. Don't discriminate against a user just because of their past actions :)

It's always tempting to let the worst people define your behavior toward everyone
Don't do that
Learn to recognize Goma for what he is and deal with him accordingly, but don't treat every new user as default-Goma on the off-chance that you might miss him otherwise.

6:02 PM
@Rachel Also, nothing about this situation is like Goma.

@NickC Very true :)

How do I deal with my employee that Killed my child in a car accident?
How do I deal with my boss who has slept with my wife
How do I deal with my wife that I thought dead because she fell down the empty elevator shaft 4 years ago but managed to survive by eating rats

Q: Title Definition

user590903I've been working within a company a while as a Support agent, but have now reached the point were I've developed enough technical and soft skills to have my manager accept that my current job title no longer reflects my work. In order to formalize things a little, I've been asked to join a pro...

Didn't we have a discussion on Name-That-Title sometime?
