@Snow lol, yeah things are still tense but work life has to continue :)
see you tomorrow :)

I must be missing something crucial, people leaving because of new direction? More welcoming?... I have no idea what they're on about. Only change I've noticed are minor formatting ones. Don't leave me on my own, half my answers are crap.

@Kilisi I'd be inclined to agree. There's been some changes - there's an encouragement to be more welcoming to new users, the new CoC is more concise and easy to understand, and the SE platform as a whole is striving to be more inclusive (even though not many people on the internet really care what gender/race/sexuality you really identify as).

you're agreeing that half my answers are crap... ahaha
we've been advocating being more welcoming to new users ever since I got here, the rest I don't know about, I don't really get involved. Just a bit horrified at some of our heavyweights leaving.

Yep. But when people do get involved and feel that they're not being listened to, then that's where the friction comes in. The SE platform is largely user-driven, but only up to a certain point.

oh well, can't stop them, I think I'll go back to minding my own business and practicing my English on the questions.

@Kilisi The feeling is that SE cares more about new users and their concerns (that some regulars feel are unjustified) then their established userbase
especially the blog post from april made a lot of people angry because it (to some) implies that the regular communities on SE are cesspits of racism, sexism, unwelcomingness, etc.
the ripple effect of that general corporate orientation shift are being felt everywhere in reduced goodwill, cynical reactions to anything official, lots of very caustic arguing, and people quitting
If you think this is bad you should have been in the tavern and on MSE during the whole thing. And on MSO.

Good grief, I missed it all

@Kilisi I would not bother.
@Snow summed it up. The way I participate the "changes" are pretty minimal. The delivery of the "message" could have been better. Most of the be nice stuff was aimed at SO anyway.
@Snow Hodor...

Honestly at this point most of the story is buried somewhere within the 50+ highly upvoted meta threads with 500+ answers arguing one point or another and the several thousand arguments playing out in comments underneath
The bottom line is people feel blamed and not listened to, and that shows

Some will fell mover "vested" here than other. For those folks, sometimes it can be hard to forget that this is not real life.

11:07 AM
Bit of a weird blog

Yes....@Kilisi some are more attached to this "space" than others.

I'm brown skinned and non Western but haven't experienced any of what they're on about

@Kilisi Therein you've come across a lynchpin of the entire discussion

Nor have I

A lot of people feel that the instigators of these changes and their complaints are illegitimate and following an agenda
And then seeing them listened to while being ignored themselves (or so they feel)...
surely you can see the massive conflict potential there

11:10 AM
everyone has an agenda, yeah I can see the conflict
I just don't care... hehe

@Magisch It all depends on perspective. LOL

didn't realise people actually read those blogs, first one I ever read

In the case of our site, I think a lot of the ill will stemmed from the moderator elections

How? We all got to vote

@Kilisi I have read a couple but mostly I don't care at all about the main meta. I participate here and SO.

11:12 AM
@Kilisi You missed the drama about Richard's candidature
It got very ugly

@Magisch A lot of us got attacked, not just Richard.
MM and I were hammered too.

it did? Sad, Richard is a good chap
it's an election, what is there to be hammered over? Either the candidate wins or they don't
I voted for MM

iirc richard was accused of being a racist and sexist among other things

don't even remember Richard being there, but wouldn't have changed my vote

Like I said, it got ugly, and I think suspensions were issued

11:14 AM
@Kilisy It was really not cool.

ahhh... damn that's childish

@Kilisi I voted for Snow

I just mentally flip coins, don't care who the mods are :-)

@Kilisi are you in the path of any of those hurricanes?

not this time, but been through a few cyclones

11:18 AM
@Kilisi Elections are the only process on SE where it's officially acceptable to talk about people and their character

Solid brick house, water tank, generator, first aid, lots of spare toilet paper I ca handle them easy

So they occupy a bit of a special place. In discussions in the election chatroom, in candidate answers to community election questions, in candidate nominations.

@Magisch I've never done more than just vote, but I'm starting to see what the problem was with MM and Richard... sounds dreadful

@Kilisi Good too hear. I am too far inland to get anything be a good rain.

@Kilisi I think MM got into some bitter arguments on MSE as well

11:20 AM
@Kilisi It sucked. A lot of folks from a place I will not name came and crapped all over us.

A peak behind the curtain of SE :p

@MisterPositive Cool, I'm prepared for anything, can survive a month if need be.... worst cyclone I been through was 3 weeks.

@MisterPositive I will have you know I'm the #15 user by rep there :D

@Kilisi 3 weeks....holy hell...

yep, wasn't much fun, but we were fine
usually the ones we get are just a day or 3
hardest part is keeping the neighbours out, they're not prepared to last more than an hour

11:23 AM
LOL
Tornado's are a bigger concern for me than hurricanes.

I've never seen one

I hope you only see one on TV/You tube.
They can do massive damage with little or no warning.

over here we had a bad Tsunami, killed a lot of people, and we have a cyclone season

brick house will not save you from tornado iirc

the no warning part is the concern.
@Kilisi Cyclone....yuck.

11:25 AM
sounds dangerous, Tsunami gives little warning, but we see the cyclones coming

@MisterPositive Yeah sometimes it'll be cloudy and windy and then suddenly a twister will form like 50 meters away and start moving at you with 25km/h +
not that I've ever experienced one thankfully

@Magisch would pay to stay fit then

yeah we were close to one a couple times.....not fun.
gotta run, you kids have fun!!

The worst part for me is the aftermath, Tsunami wiped out some clients and I donated them equipment to rebuild which broke my bank... but worst was picking up dead bodies two days later in the cleanup, whole families were wiped out

4 hours later…
3:40 PM
Hello folks.
@Kilisi what dead bodies? ^

3:59 PM
hello @Nofel

A: Implement Autocard support for Yu-Gi-Oh!

Jon EricsonI'm declining this feature request not because I think it's a bad idea, but because I don't know when we'll have the resources to implement it. (Insert sad emoji here.) I know the MTG autocard feature is pretty useful and I'm going to ask a developer to look into a proposed improvement. The hope ...

@IDrinkandIKnowThings Tons of red flags: First-time user, zero history, zero questions, zero history on any other SE site, started at 101 rep yesterday and has already ridden the (faux) outrage on this question to 387 rep and HNQ status... and the user is self-named after a chocolate bar. And question rings seriously bogus: most adults know a 'new mother room' means breast-feeding and diaper-changing. But my comment suggesting it was insincere got deleted... (by who, for what?) Is WP becoming troll fodder?

10:30 PM
@smci Most questions are asked by first-time users. I agree that it's certainly a salacious story and it's come to our attention but I can't say much more than that. Consider though that at some point a troll question becomes so useful that it's indistinguishable from a "genuine" one. If the question doesn't have merit, vote to close or downvote (...if you get it before the HNQ hits I suppose).

You take a 5-10 minute break every 25 minutes? — Joe Strazzere 5 hours ago
@JoeStrazzere regarding ^those comments, you can find more info on Wikipedia but the Pomodoro technique has its fans. I've played around with it before but it's not really compatible with entering the "programming zone" ...or hour-long meetings.

11:24 PM
@Lilienthal I know a few folks who claimed that they "did Pomodoro". As with those who "do Agile" I don't see much consistency in what they actually do. I have to say that I don't actually know anyone who takes a 5-10 minute walk outside after every 25 minutes or work.

11:42 PM
@Lilienthal None of what you said is applicable to me. I can't vote-to-close, since I'm 2K rep. Nor am I going to stick around to reach 10K rep, if WP.SE allows itself to become overrun with trolls triggering virtue-signallers. By no means all troll questions become useful. This is a case in point. Look at the answers it got. As to my comment, if it had motivated other posters to scrutinize the q. and vote-to-close, that's useful. Moving it to chat damages that. I never saw your response.
I'm quite concerned if WP condones, overvalues and promotes troll questions on flashpoint topics with zero redeeming value constructed to trigger social virtual-signaling, and concerned it doesn't reward sustained contribution over a period of years, like what I and others have been making. "Be welcoming" does not mean "Be credulous, and switch off your abuse detectors". Should I post a question claiming I adopted a pet goat, and coworkers feel awkward if I suckle him in the office? ...
How do you know I didn't adopt a pet goat and bring it to the office? etc. I fear we are on a one-way path to irrelevance.
The combination of HNQ across the SE network+"Be Welcoming"+trolling is quite fearsome...
