I am so sick of the comments leading to a torrent of downvotes. I had 13 upvotes and no downvotes and one guy argues with me and now it's 6 downvotes. It's ridiculous

5 hours later…
7:45 AM
@ChrisE linky?

Dang it, no winterbash for me. no hats, no snow. @RoryAlsop Are you seeing anything?

@Snow Yep - I was top of the leaderboard for a while
currently 5th

Odd. I have two hats now, but the website all looks the same to me.

I only have 8 hats
What do you see here now: winterbash2017.stackexchange.com
reload it just in case

8:05 AM
Hm. I guess you're not using IE?
Yep. Winterbash is disabled on IE. Stack just assumed that no one would be stupid enough to use IE so didn't bother telling anyone....

1 hour later…
9:13 AM
morning all

Greets.

@Snow what-up dawg?

All the fun of the fair. I'm documenting some of our LKGs as part of a never-ending documentation and full stack handover.

@Snow sounds fun...oh wait.. I think I mean the opposite

Morning all.

9:27 AM
You have that right. Headphones on, head down. You know how it goes.

@Snow you gonna just shake it off?

lol. Not got there yet on my playlist. Still going through my Baltic Fleet albums. TS comes next.

Hell of a difference between my Manager and Creative Manager, both had me wanted to revamp pages, my manager had me so much stress and panic that It was like if I missed the train the world would end, and the other manager, today was her day. she told me on phone to go live and I did, no stress of sweat and she is bringing me a starbucks
wow, hell of a difference

@Snow that's good a bit of Tay-Tay to get you through the day.. stay strong my friend!

@Snow documentation is a pain in neck
I got 9 days to go and yet I donno what to write
coz start next week, my team want to me coach them half a day

9:38 AM
woo hoo.. first ever winterbash hat!

I had to wait for winterbash last night
to see

10:06 AM
Avril Lavigne, I think I can cope with that.

@Snow I've just gotten used to your love for Taylor Swift, now you bring Avril into it? Why did you have to go and make things so complicated?
2

@Nofel boss bringing you a starbucks: all is good

@snow Look what you made @motosubatsu do

@Nofel hahahahahaha

It lengthens the playlist.

10:10 AM
(normally I wouldn't get that joke, but my youngest forced me to hear some pop music this week)

@RoryAlsop she isn't my boss, my boss is the reason I am changing jobs. she is a head of another department.

@Nofel oh - change to her department :-)

Too late,
I am almost near of my notice period @RoryAlsop

@Nofel well I do hope your new role is happier than the one you are leaving

plus it isn't my field, I am not creative
hell I am not good at coding either
yea I hope, Learning All I can about new role tech as it has scope and I knew which then made me pass my interview
still freaked out

10:17 AM
@Snow so much for my happy ending
it's quiet out there on the site... too quiet

10:37 AM
I'm just laughing at that question about people leaving their workstations open and their boss messing on their systems.

@Snow here it would be a disciplinary offence

@RoryAlsop leaving workstations open, or the boss using it while unlocked?

@Snow either, but someone useing your machine while you are away is more serious than the initial offence :-)
we have a policy where if you see one open you close it and notify them they left it open by accident. To be fair, we have a short autolock period, and locking is drummed into everyone, but it still occasionally happens

At my first job, I left my workstation open on the first day. I came back to find someone has taken a screen-cap of my screen, set it as the background and then hidden all of the desktop icons and minimised the task bar. I soon learnt after that.

@Snow back in the early days of JaNET, that used to be a favourite. Get remote access to another university, screenshot the Sun workstation and overlay the screenshot on their screen. All the screens in an entire lab, for example

11:17 AM
@motosubatsu seems like I won't be able to make the workshop I signed up for
via the person u sent me invite
turns out my manager booked his half day before me

11:40 AM
why all silent today

@Nofel that's a shame.. oh well these things don't always work out
@Nofel I've just got back to my desk from a meeting but yeah it's pretty quiet

12:12 PM
Oh I read ur gone ur meeting
I had to pour my heart our to the lady head of other department
she told me another book audible.co.uk/t2/…
@TheSnarkKnight ^
and my manager told her that his anixty levels r uncontrolable
Oh man, My demand in office, just sky rockeded today
Had a chat with Director of my department, asking me about my new work. So I told him the name of company
and I wasn't expecting such a quick enrollment, but it happen so fast and asked if the office gonna miss me
the reply was, certainly. U did a great job and everyone loves it.

12:33 PM
@RoryAlsop When I worked for one of the big lotteries here in the US, it was a fireable offense.

1 hour later…
1:46 PM
@Nofel books are a good thing :D

@TheSnarkKnight agreed.. I've grabbed a copy of the one Nofel posted on Audible, looks interesting

@motosubatsu for a long time "How to win friends and influence people" was essentially my bible. If I didn't take that one to heart, I'd never have been able to get along with anyone.

I have a copy of that book in my laptop bag right now. I've not read it yet, which is why I'm still a bastard.

@TheSnarkKnight I've got a copy of that too.. and How to stop worrying and start living
I'm on a real self-improvement trip at the moment

@Snow Which book?

1:56 PM
Winning friends and influencing people.

@Snow for real?

Are you calling me a liar, sir? Yes, for real.

@Snow no, but with your overwhelming amount of charm I am surprised.
;-}

Charm is only what I present above the water. Below the water line, I am awash with bile and resentment.
2

@Snow that makes me sad. Hugging you from across the pond.

2:03 PM
@motosubatsu I may pick up "how to stop worrying and start living" again too. Though, I don't worry much anymore. All of my worst fears have been realized. Both of my parents are gone, my one brother is dead, the other doesn't talk to me, and my children are 2000 miles away.
It's hard to worry when your worst fears have come to fruition

@MisterPositive Did someone hijack your account and replace you with someone from IPS?

@Snow LMFAO.....

@Snow it seems he's rather chipper today. I can fix that.
we need to stop this before it spreads

@TheSnarkKnight My name is Mister Positive, duh.

I really wish you would actually be called "Mister Positive, Duh".

2:06 PM
@Snow I may go back to Mister Sort Of Positive.

@MisterPositive Yes, yes, come to the dark side
we have cookies.

the cookies are a damn lie!

Or "Mister Mediocre".

curse you @TheSnarkKnight

@MisterPositive no, the cake is a lie

2:07 PM
@Snow to quote Independence day, "Up yours!!"
They are both lies....
I got no cake or cookies after 30K

@Nofel Did provide steamed milk though

2:23 PM
@MisterPositive ^^^^^

@TheSnarkKnight EEEK

2:36 PM
I've been given two CV's to review in preparation for two interviews that are happening this week. I printed them off to make notes, showed them to my team of four, and asked for further feedback or questions they might have (as the chosen candidate will be working alongside them, so it's important they get on). My line manager then scolded me for passing them round. Is it wrong or illegal to pass a CV round?

yo
sorry was away
my producivity charts are pumpping upto 90%
The magic of good person to work for

@theonlydanever Not sure what you did wrong there....

We don't usually pass CVs around the team, only to any team members who will be on the interview board itself.

@theonlydanever I think it is not ethical to show around cv coz some people like to compare or be jerk about someone
IMHO

Or they might personally know the candidates and feed them information.

2:47 PM
@theonlydanever it's not illegal.. passing them around can sometimes be frowned upon but it's not inherently wrong IMO
as @Snow and @Nofel said passing them round is something that needs to be done with a touch of discretion (I always redact personal info before doing so)

I give people exactly 3.5 seconds to read and memorize a two page resume before forcing them to eat it.

Reminds me of a place, where someone in his 50's with same as my role, came to me saying the Manager asked me to make interview question and I don't know what to make, so asked me. later on he passed on saying he made it, clever chap didn't even knew answers himself and asked me.

@Snow you softie you
3.5 seconds is practically an eternity

It's printed on both sides. You have to give people the time to turn the paper over.
Seems only fair.

I give them 2 seconds to read it and then inform them that they have another 2 seconds to eat it AND repeat it back to me verbatim or I threaten to buy them a puppy, let them bond with that puppy and then drown it in front of them

2:55 PM
Reminds me of a special forces game show I used to watch. contestants used to get about 30 seconds to study the layouts of three different bombs before being sent off to defuse them (while dressed in full bomb suits).

@Snow fair?!.. FAIR?!...**FAIR?!** what do you think this is.. a kindergarten sports day?
@Snow haha.. reminds me of the "Jimmy Jab games" in Brooklyn Nine-Nine where they had people racing around the police station in bomb suits

Sigh. Been a long time since I saw Kindergarten Cop....

@Snow Who is your daddy and what does he do?
3

they're HORRIBLE...

It's not a tumor!
OK I'm officially out of Kindergarten Cop quotes now

3:10 PM
"stop whining, you kids are soft, you have no discipline"

the lack of decent questions is seriously impeding my quest for hats

1) delete at least 10 potentially unnecessary comments you've made this year prior to today. 2) appropriately tag or edit five questions without leaving an edit reason. That's two easy hats for you.

@Snow when I edit my old question, ppl come n say "Oh u made a old question edit, why bother?"

Because people should be searching for answers before asking a question. Making the question clearer and easier to search for helps other people to find answers.

@Snow what's the fun in deleting unnecessary comments.

3:25 PM
@TheSnarkKnight You get a hat.

@Snow more fun to let them stand >:)

Hats are more important.

@Snow meh

You're just jealous because I'm beating you.

@Snow The only thing you can beat me at is GOLD badges and STUPID hats.
;-}

3:33 PM
Now children, fight nice. Use hammers

Can I use the box-cutter I have in my desk?

@Snow Sure, Let me just get something from my car.... @TheSnarkKnight

thanks all - i didn't think i had done anything wrong, but wasn't 100% sure.
i guess it depends on the place. my old employer would put it past literally everyone, though they were much more start-up... this place is fully corporate.

Yeah. You wouldn't want people directly contacting candidates. you also don't want members of your team feeling as though their job is at risk when the candidates are obviously more highly skilled than they are.

3:50 PM
Ah.. My favourite edit reason "My shift key works".

4:06 PM
I just had to take some life-saving medication. Many people are alive today because I take these tranquilizers

@TheSnarkKnight feel like I could do with some of those.. the temperature of my blood is rising as a result of the fact that the "dream job" BS seems to have started infecting TWP

4:32 PM
@motosubatsu ah, the joy of autistic rage being your constant companion.

Got Hats?!?!

There aught to be a hat for people who avoid hats

The Party Pooper Hat

@TheSnarkKnight yep.. I call mine Frank
@DarkCygnus I'm at a measly two hats
I have failed as a hatter

I just got one
Been absent from TWP lately (too much damn work)

4:35 PM
@DarkCygnus it's sad when work gets in the way of the important things :(

c u tommorrw guys
have a good evening

c ya @Nofel

laters Nofelmeister

4:59 PM
Be well @Nofel

yea.. hat #3

5:18 PM
why on earth is there a red dot on my (empty) review queue icon?

I posted a question on "Why are companies so focused on AWS experience?" and it was flagged as off-topic. Where would I ask this question instead?
I assumed that if I posted it on one of the technical SEs it would be off-topic because it's not a specific technical question...
Well, at least I earned the "peer pressure" badge, lol :P

@ChrisE I too noticed it
You can do any reviews right @ChrisE ? Or are you still missing some cookies? I once experienced it but because they were tag edit reviews so it didn't showed up to me

The evil red dot.... The cat portion of me makes me want to chase it down.

Yeah, that's old. I can do reviews, but unlike the post you linked, this is on the icon itself, not the individual review categories and my queue is empty.

5:34 PM
@IsaacFreeman lol
@IsaacFreeman it is quite a company Specific question, and also speculative
But yeah Dukeling pointed it out really good, companies usually want people to begin already knowing and having managed AWS

Right, but my question is "what exactly does that entail"...

@IsaacFreeman only they know :o) hence why company specific
and if you are asking about AWS you are completely off topic. You would be better googling it and playing with it abit

@ChrisE current se-wide bug

It's not just one company though, it's most of the companies I apply for it seems

It even has a one year free trial (which mine actually is about to expire...shame)

5:37 PM
I have googled it and played with it a bit

@RoryAlsop link?

Q: I'm seeing red dots everywhere

GlorfindelOn all Stack Exchange sites where I have review privileges, the review queue menu icon has a red dot. No matter what I try, it doesn't go away. This bug report on Meta Stack Overflow might or might not be related.

about to be fixed
and... appears fixed now

I'm just feeling like there's something I missing... it's a hosting service, you host servers on it... what is there to "know"?

Google it
try it
then you will know

@IsaacFreeman yeah, I wouldn't hire you if that's what you said in interview.

5:39 PM
headdesk

We run AWS, Azure, Google, others - all are very different
and on those platforms we run ...anything

@RoryAlsop that's fine, but can you give me an example of something you do with AWS that can't be intuited of figured out in a few minutes?

we don't treat AWS as a hosting solution at all

@RoryAlsop not for me. still seeing it, queue still empty.

@ChrisE fixed for me

5:41 PM
Basicaly AWS is IaS, PaS or well SaS @IsaacFreeman

For example, if you asked me for example of why Linux experience is important, I might say something like "you need to know how to find files on the filesystem". I'm just curious what sort of things you might expect a person with AWS to know that aren't obvious
And I assume you mean IaaS, PaaS and SaaS. Yes, I understand that stuff. I'm familiar with cloud technology, just not AWS specifically. I'm wondering what sort of things you might expect someone to know about AWS that aren't easily derived from general cloud experience.

@IsaacFreeman It's all done in slightly different ways to the Azure model, for example
@ChrisE try refresh

Can you give me a specific example? You mean the buttons are in different places on the UI?

@RoryAlsop lol
What kind of noob do I look like?
I did ctrl-refresh too.
it's gone now.

Q: Not sure where to ask a job-search/intervieing question about a specific technology

Isaac FreemanI recently posted a question on the Workplace SE, asking "Why are companies so focused on AWS experience?" I assumed it was the right place to ask it because I wasn't asking for technical help with a specific technical problem. The full text of my question was: I'm a Linux sysadmin with 15+ y...

6:10 PM
@IsaacFreeman UI? I really don't care about a UI

Ok, so what is one of the things that AWS does different than the Azure model, just as an example?
I'm just trying to understand what you mean by "It's all done in slightly different ways to the Azure model"

Q: Raising concerns about dirty and unhygienic workplace

user235133Yesterday I found food boxes and empty cups all around office creating what I consider to be a dirty and unhygienic workplace. I'd like to raise this to my boss for them to address. What is the best/most professional way to do this? I was thinking of doing so over e-mail, would this be appropri...

anybody care voting to reopen that one? Just one vote missing, and the edits done made it on topic and answerable

Q: How should I handle people being upset over their presents?

daze413Time for a holiday-themed question. I lead a small online group in an MMORPG. For the holidays, we decided to exchange gifts ala Secret Santa. As leader, I took it upon myself to organize the whole thing. The mechanics for the gift exchange was that participants would sign up, and they would gi...

@IDrinkandIKnowThings Wonder what game they play. I haven't played since SWTOR

7:02 PM
@MisterPositive im sure its WOW

@IDrinkandIKnowThings Maybe I need to try it again. Last time I played the graphics were a bit weak for my taste.

@MisterPositive could be Eve... I hear good things about the new eve. It has nearly drawn me back :p

Eve...
will google that at home to avoid the obvious other content...

aka Microsoft Excel with a graphic front-end.

Its a space combat game...

7:10 PM
I know. I've played it for a couple years.
Excellllll Innnnnnn SPAAAAAACE!!!!

@IDrinkandIKnowThings I will be checking it out....

It's actually a decent game, there's just so many mechanics involved in everything. That's not necessarily bad, but unless you're doing just combat and no production, get ready for charts and math.

@ChrisE hmmmmm
is there a dummies mode LOL

@MisterPositive yeah you can just run around in asteroid belts and hunt pirates

@IDrinkandIKnowThings Cool. Definitely will check it out...

7:29 PM
It's pretty easy to get started now. It used to be ridiculously hard, but that was years ago.
It's only recently been free too. I always paid.

@ChrisE Really? SWTOR went free, except you could pay for special items to make it easier / quicker to play.

I'm pretty sure that WoW is the only one that isn't free anymore. Maybe ESO

8:04 PM
I like the simpler games.
I don't want to be spending a half hour for each turn in a game.

Well, my contract has been extended for another 6 months. At least I get to eat.

@ChrisE does your company still have the 2 year max, then have to hire you FT or let you go?
I know that that was policy for one time.

@TheSnarkKnight Doesn't apply to me because I'm not a contractor to AT&T directly. It's a project I'm on, me and about 14 others (some from a different company) on this project.
I'll have been here 2 years on Jan 5.

@MisterPositive It could also be Runescape. They have a strong holiday celebration tradition, and many events. Its also a MMORPG

8:21 PM
I like runescape, or did. It's been years, now I can't figure out the interface

Yeah, they completely redesigned it
Added several skills, changed fighting dynamics etc...
I really thing that @TheSnarkKnight could use a Hat. It would be funny to place it over the head of the deskbang figure

:|
Have you noted that the Hats do not appear on our icons on the Right? (The chat population)

@ChrisE me either. Next week, I get to deal with the airports. Two flights each way. An entire day wasted in both places.

i haven't been on a flight in over 12 years.

I also have less SE time on these dates

9:12 PM
@ChrisE it's not fun. I swear, I'm going to take Viagra before I get in line. If I'm going to be groped, I may as well enjoy it.
