'Morning everyone

8:45 AM
@MaskedMan Ah okay. I had something entirely different in mind given the context.

@Guten Moregen, mein Herr.

@Lilienthal it seems that I am always no further than two steps away from controversy
@motosubatsu alles gut
Looks like our friend is at it again.....

A: Am I Obligated to Enforce Detrimental Company Policy?

Marilyn McNelly CoppleThe policy should be enforced, inconsistent is a liability.

@RichardU Yep, it's clearly that time of the week again

@motosubatsu Yep, nothing like checking out the first page and seeing that most posts are on hold, even better when it's DESERVEDLY so. I'm slow to hit the close button, but this current crop begs for it. No reopens cast by me for any of these.

JoeFact: @JoeStrazzere has found a way to make complaints a way to search for conditions you like.

Q: How to find jobs that are as corporate as possible?

R. QueI worked in a startup as a web developer and it was really unsuitable for me. I don't like making friends at work, going out to eat with the team, having to go get drinks, team lunches, "team outings", meetups, open offices, or having to fit in with the culture. I just want a job where I can show...

I feel sorry for anyone who goes into coding for the money. You've go to love it, or it's hell.

Q: What is future of programming ? Which lanaguage to choose ? What has money?

Monty I have worked on Java and currently working on frontend with typescript and angular2. My friend is working on python + machine learning + aws and ig data. Now I am thinking too that all these things he is working on has lot of potential and money instead on what I am working on. Will my tech s...

@RichardU a lot of people on the "outside" just don't "get it", when I was applying for my CS course many of the "grown ups", upon hearing of my choice, would nod sagely and talk about "that's where the money is" I gave up trying to explain that I was going to study it because I liked it

Q: Psychometric Test based on Deductive Reasoning and Orientation

StuI have a psychometric test to take that has very unique elements to it. More specifically, Deductive Reasoning and Orientation. Examples of these are as follows. Orientation In this assessment, you must find the set of arrows that obey the given rules. Sentence 1: Up left ABOVE Up left. Sente...

Is google broken or something?

@RichardU I dunno, if you are going to choose a profession purely for the salary potential, coding is not the worst job environment to have to tolerate. Your alternatives are usually things like Law, Medicine, Investment Banking etc. all of which, generally, have far worse working conditions and/or educational commitments.

@RichardU 42 minutes from asked to deleted. For something not abusive, that's gotta be a record. :)
I think it's a valid question (in general, not here I mean). C# is my favorite language but do you think I learned Java because it's "fun"? No, it gives me more opportunity for $.

Q: What is a good reason to close "How do I find..." style questions

Richard UI just voted to close this question. Psychometric Test based on Deductive Reasoning and Orientation The reason I gave was the "advice" one, but I'm not sure. Is this a good reason, or is there a better one to list when we get these types of questions.

3:13 PM
@Kaz It's never a good idea to go into ANY field for salary potential.
@motosubatsu there are two reasons you don't see many people in IT over 40; agism and burnout. The ones without a passion for it usually burnout somewhere between 32 and 37.

3:27 PM
who let the crazies out today?

4:13 PM
god knows... is it a full moon or something?

Hmm, I know initiating romantic relationships at work isn't usually advisable, but is asking someone out automatically an offense that has to be escalated to HR? Or in other words, since when is "asking someone out" == "sexual harassment"?

@MaskedMan depends on company policy, local laws etc but in many cases the answer is "when they didn't want you to ask them out

@motosubatsu and how would you know that they didn't want you to ask them out, until you asked and found out?

@MaskedMan and therein lies the dilemma

Anyway, my point here is that nowadays people seem to overreact to everything, and the threshold for what offends people is rapidly going down. If someone asks "Would you like to go out on a date with me some time?", just say "no" and move on. What is the need to make a song and dance about it?

4:26 PM
in a sane world an unwanted "normal" approach would be met with a "no thanks" and that would be the end of it, harassment would only begin if it were repeated but sometimes things get a bit "snowflake"

Of course, if the person keeps pestering, then it goes into harassment territory, but not the first time someone asks. What's next? "Boss, do you think I deserve a promotion?" - "How dare you? You're out right now."

Think I've just read the question you're talking about

4:42 PM
The only time I would ask a coworker out is somewhere that wasn't at work and during off-hours. Otherwise, it absolutely could be considered sexual harassment if she was uncomfortable.
And if it were a subordinate, never ever
I'm not saying it IS sexual harassment, but that asking a coworker out at work is asking for trouble.

4:54 PM
@ChristopherEstep Absolutely, asking out a coworker at work is foolish at best. Getting into a relationship is even worse. It could be a nightmare for the other coworkers, as I have experienced first hand a few years ago.
So we had two coworkers who got into a relationship, and let me just say, the importance of leaving their romance outside work was not exactly clear to them. It ended up with the team leader escalating the issue to the (common) manager, and they received a stern warning to behave professionally while at work.

I was young, stupid, got involve with a coworker. She was banging the manager at the same time (I did not know this) Anyone care to guess the end result (hint, I wasn't working there long after that).
I'm a bit suspicious of the feminist getting asked out post. Poster has a born on date of today.

I'm suspicious of any feminist getting asked out. (ba dump bump!)

5:12 PM
In other news, Joe wins the Deadpan Snarker of the day award yet again.
> I don't know of any realistic deterrent measures to prevent anyone from asking once. Maybe a sign or poster, but probably not.
Make a poster to let people know that you don't want to be asked out. That is a totally cool idea which would preempt all such unwanted advances.

@MaskedMan I'm sure no one would troll you ever

I can imagine a realistic deterrent measure. "Employees wishing to remain employed are barred from dating other employees during their tenure here."

@enderland Uhm, that was Joe's idea though.

And I would actually support a no-dating policy in a company if it were limited to being on the same teams or having the same supervisor, etc.

@MaskedMan I'm pretty sure it was not intended as a serious question

5:18 PM
/shrug

@ChristopherEstep this makes sense, the "no dating in your reporting structure" aspect makes a lot of sense
why care if someone in customer service dates someone in engineering, for example

@ChristopherEstep That is a good idea. I totally agree. A supervisor dating a subordinate is a recipe for disaster.

exactly. Though I could also see a complete ban for those in HR

Companies I've worked for have all had that sort of structure for what it's worth

@enderland I love these not-so-serious questions for the witty remarks that Joe usually makes on them. It helps me refine my comedic tastes and also improves my English.
Speaking of which, today I learned the difference between absurd and silly.
@AakashM absurd means "incongruous or unreasonable", silly means "lacking wisdom, good sense or seriousness". Something can be the former, but not the latter. (mostly by unreasonable, but serious, which seems to be what OP is going for here.) — Erik 5 hours ago

5:40 PM
I worked at a place where the policy was that if there was fraternization, both parties had to meet with HR, and be made aware of all policies. If they were in different departments, then there would be fewer concerns, but it was frowned upon severely, regardless.
The problem with some of these questions is that they invoke Poe's Law....

6:24 PM
@MaskedMan I was thinking of something like: "Keep Calm and Don't Ask Me Out", with the crown and all. Depends on the company culture, I guess.

6:36 PM
@JoeStrazzere how about "Don't assume my gender or ask me out" with another one that says "Why doesn't anyone talk to me?"?

@MaskedMan I asked a coworker out once. We've been married for 39 years. I know we were young, perhaps we were foolish as well. Times were different then, I guess.

7:01 PM
@JoeStrazzere yeah, try that today and you'd be in for a rude awakening. It changed in the early 1990s, by the early 2000's, you were in for trouble if you even tried. To bad too, I had a SERIOUS crush on the admin who I found out, years later liked me too.

@RichardU Hmm, maybe. I've seen recent cases where coworkers were asked out without incident. Perhaps it's locale or domain specific.

@JoeStrazzere I find that the less urban, the more relaxed the environments tend to be.
I worked for a NY based Newspaper, so....
no leeway

7:48 PM
I dated a coworked in my last job, it didn't go well but didn't had any work repercussions.
At the same time she told she received emails from another guy she dated in her job email address, and was considering reporting him for harassment, so...

Q: How do you address a user that's consistently rude/offensive but may not know it

schizoid04I've seen several posts from a specific user on the site that seem to be right on the border of being rude or offensive over the past couple of weeks. Some things seem slightly over the line, and other things seem like they're just edgy. Occasionally, I flag, but I've been debating whether or no...
