@RichardU Eh. It's a poor question but that doesn't scream entitled to me. Plenty of people make workplace decisions based on their commute and such a drastic change is a perfect reason to argue for more compensation, especially if you're valuable.

@Lilienthal The edit softened the tone, and I agree, there's never anything wrong with asking. That said, I live in the NY metro area, and 2 hour commutes each way are not uncommon.

wow, this one is getting rough... so much for "be nice" (regarding the comments)

Q: Should I tell the hiring manager that I don't intend to stay for more than a year?

user56326I have recently applied for a position and I have passed through the video interview stage. Should I let the company know that I will be leaving the country for a year of international study at the end of July 2017? I feel this may hurt my chances of getting the job, but if I am employed and and...

One interesting thing about having been around here so much is I can see all the "wat" that hiring managers do that are a bit confusing

2:41 PM
I knew someone who left their job for a job at Lucent and was laid off after precisely 1 week on the job. I'm not one for being kind to large companies

HSAs.... lol

Yeah, you never know what a large company is going to do because they don't let anyone know mid-low level.
I was at AT&T for a year and a half and I found out on Tuesday that my contract was ending on Thursday and that all contractors company-wide were being eliminated.
Yeah, you never know what a large company is going to do because they don't let anyone know mid-low level.

@ChristopherEstep the way I think of it, I am as loyal to a company as they are to me

It was actually a great place to work. Aside from the hammer being dropped from Dallas it was great.
So great, I leapt at the chance to contract there again, which I am doing right now.

I enjoyed my previous employer too, wouldn't be opposed to working there again should things here not work out
but. am very glad to be here, not there :-)

One of the key reasons I like my small company (15 people). Ubiquitous, constant, universal communication.

One of the good things about most of my jobs are either that I own the company, or that I 'own' an entire team within a company and thus get significant autonomy. That can really help a large corporation feel fun to work in, without most of those worries

but we're just kids! we can't be managers! ;)

Zak
@enderland Well, not unless you're in Silicon Valley ^^

lol

@enderland I dunno - I led my first team in a large company when I was in my mid 20's

2:59 PM
@RoryAlsop in my previous position I was quickly going towards that route, though tbh working with offshore folks was frustrating enough I had no interest in it

@enderland yeah - it's got to be a pathway that you want to go down :-)

I was good at it, if I wanted to make lots of money I would have stayed there

luckily infosec is new enough that if you are good at it you can steer it, so I've only occasionally had periods that were less fun

I'm a great manager, so I've been told. I hate it though.

3:23 PM
recent grad with literally no work experience?

I saw that. I don't know what to say. Trust fund baby or something? That's bizarre.
And you're right. Unless he's brilliant, I wouldn't hire him. It shows a complete lack of foresight as well as interest in his own progression.

3:40 PM
yeah... it's a bummer though, schools have minimal incentive to help people like that actually GET internships too

3:58 PM
@enderland ...some schools/colleges/universities are amazing at it though
I'm working with 8 local universities and 3 are entirely bouoght in to industry placements
but absolutely - some suck at this, and it's the students who lose out

Yeah, @RoryAlsop that's the problem with for-profit universities imo too. meh

Q: Will interviewers ask me behavioral questions if I have no work experience?

StudentI'm a recent grad, and when I say no experience, I mean no experience. No extracurriculars and no part time jobs. Considering that this shows on my resume, will employers expect me to have answers to behavioral questions?

Anyone else seeing my comment screw up the page layout here?

nope, seems fine here

Yeah, it goes across the page

Heh, interesting. Could be a browser-dependent issue then.

Q: Advantages of an electrified sword?

SkySo I want my rabbits to have lightning swords. Well it's not literally a blade of plasma but just a metal sword that has a current flowing through it. What kind of advantages would the weapon bring about in melee fights like duels and group fights? I would imagine that it would be shocking (p...

God, that entire site is basically one big chatroom.
