5:24 AM
Morning TWP!!

2 hours later…
7:23 AM
Hello working people

@Nofel It makes it easier to see whilst driving

@avazula Hello Yourself!!

@SouravGhosh who's yourself? I'm Ava :p

@avazula :P

@SouravGhosh I flagged as unclear

7:33 AM
The person that asked that question is confused about things
Does anyone else get annoyed when somebody asks a question, you very quickly ask for a clarification, and then radio silence.

@GregoryCurrie Everyone.

;_;

It's just that, most of us do not get bothered by it, and move on :)

All I want to do is help you, you silly fool!

Seriously, if you don't have time for the people to help you, why should they be helping you in first place?

7:45 AM
Most people ask for help but forget where they've asked

@GregoryCurrie That's it. :)

and never return to the site to check

lol, that's funny

Happens all the time, my 4-5 top answers
the question hit hard but the OP never returned

Don't you guys have a policy of not answering off topic questions?

7:47 AM
I don't have such a policy

@GregoryCurrie I can see indeed ^^

TWP does have that policy yes.

Or rather, I think rather broadly about what on-topic means

I mean if you're on 9 rep caps in a row you gotta answer whats there haha

And yeah, I try to empathise as much as I can

7:48 AM
@avazula Many of the cases, policies are somewhat left to interpretation... :)

Hey, I can only answer what's there!

@SouravGhosh yeah, I know ... Some of the SE rules annoy me, like this one, but as the proposer of a new Area51 site, I'm trying to strictly stick to the scope... and that's hard.

I also ask questions before answering, which doesn't help when they disappear.

I asked because we do have such a policy on IPS and I believe it's valid network-wide but it doesn't seem respected here :p

Out of interest @avazula what did you consider off topic?

7:51 AM
@GregoryCurrie that question about expertise fields for CEO/CTO

We do get people who join up, drop in a salacious question and then just not engage any further, and just watch the views and answers roll in. I'm pretty sure there's one person who does precisely that time after time.

That's clearly on-topic from where I sit.

it's too broad to be answered as is

@avazula Same here. However, time to time, we do tend to slip. We're all human being, come on!! Point is, if there is a disagreement, we should consider that from an open mind and correct ourselves if we're in the wrong position. that's what it matters

Just a confused question
There is a difference between off-topic, and something that needs a bit of refinement

7:51 AM
@SouravGhosh oh, of course, I wasn't trying to incriminate/blame anyone :)

HOW DARE YOU

@avazula Neither am I. :)

I am however.

@GregoryCurrie DARE YOU WHAT?

I'm just trolling
Like the old sense of the word

7:52 AM
haha ok

Basically, I'd like to see people have the judgment to not answer crap and answer real questions instead.
2

I'm autistic and I really have a hard time understanding irony/sarcasm, especially online. Fun fact is that I myself do use it a lot

Just with that CEO question, I can imagine a few people that think in the same way
It's probably just a matter of refining the question to make it more precise

@GregoryCurrie Well, tbh I don't think this one's salvageable. But that's my POV :)

I personally agree with Ava in this situation

7:56 AM
The question is based on a false assumption, which in a way makes it a X/Y question.
(And that technical experience is an indicator of CEO suitability)
Also, you guys have to remember, I'm on an 8-day rep cap streak
I'm not saying it's the most important factor, but it's right up there!
(@avazula that was sarcasm again)

@GregoryCurrie oops. This one I'd never have imagined tbh

My badges are so perfect - 80B - 40S - 10G
I'm not allowed another badge

8:12 AM
Well, don't mind me, I'm just going to go through all your answers

Dont do it
....I'm going to receive another bronze badge soon

I'm amused because there's plenty of questions in which TWP users advise OP to just leave. Is it that easy to find another job in the English-speaking countries?

@avazula Maybe, maybe not. But most of the case, it's not worthy continuing either.

@SouravGhosh yeah, but for leaving you need to be able to face potential unemployment, and that demands money

@avazula Also, as I see it, "leave" does not mean "leave now". It usually means, "prepare to leave" which takes it's own time. But ultimately, you have to leave, for the better.
@avazula See ^^

8:23 AM
@SouravGhosh right, that makes more sense
:p

@avazula At least, I mean that when I advocate for leaving

I have a major problem with people saying "You should leave the company"

People say this without any idea of the employment environment, and can be fundamentally bad advise.
A shitty job is still better than not being able to feed your family.
Anyway

Q: How can I tell if I'm being remotely monitored?

user101650I was the bookkeeper for a company in liquidation and am in the process of regenerating books due to corrupted file. Lately, my MacBook Pro has been playing up - really slow or unresponsive at times, fast like normal at other times. McAfee has warned me a few times that a middle man has been de...

This question is severely off-topic

8:42 AM
81 bronze medals...

Don't look at me. I was trying to help you out by down voting you everywhere.

8:56 AM
Looks at Gregory

morning all

Morning
Had the worst experience driving in this morning
Ran out of screenwash when a bird Sh*t on my car
and it just smudged all over...

@Twyxz :(

like explosive diarrhoea

9:16 AM
just.. ewww

@avazula As a software developer here in southern germany, I'm convinced me and any of my coworkers could have a new job in a month or two.
the lack of young people is too real.

And now I had to just pour water on the screen n wipe
for like 10 mins

@Magisch I understand that. But you're 1- in Europe, where we lack employees and 2- in IT, where we desperately lack of engineers

I understand in america jobs are even more easy come, easy go, with no hard notice requirements

9:30 AM
true

9:54 AM
@Twyxz true but as a designer/developer, I see it 90% disconnected with unified dashboard and ruins the dashboard
I am huge fan of cockpit and panels
good morning all.
I love A6 cockpit. massive but the popping screen ruins it.
good thing, in new A6 they made it part of the dashboard.

I don't mind it where it is
A lot of them contract and can be hidden these days
only when driving do they show

10:45 AM
@Twyxz yea that is nice thing about A6.
I like to ford focus
we got a showroom near. I will drop by.

I find A6 is a bit too small
I really don't go any smaller than A4, to be honest

isn't this spam?

RS6
Buy one now

@SouravGhosh Spam

@Snow thought so...

Full-size range rover is the best car I ever had.

11:21 AM
Range Rover is just to ... bloaty... for me
I far prefer cars without all that extra weight - things like wood panelling, soundproofing, aircon, pointless gadgets just annoy me as they reduce acceleration
If I could just have a rev counter, and maybe a boost gauge, I'd be happy. A roof is useful in the UK because weather, but it never gets really cold or hot here, so basic should be a thing for British cars

Meh. Been there, done that, had the 911 CS4. I prefer comfort and a smug feeling of superiority these days.

@Snow Hodor!
Same here, I prefer a comfy BMW ride.

@Snow oh, I don't like 911's - there are very few that actually handle well. The Cayman corners nearly as well as a Lotus, though
@MisterPositive I raced the BMW M4 GTP's and they were the least satisfying track car I have been in for ages. Big, heavy, disconnected from the road
(To be fair, that same day I raced Caterhams and Atoms, which were much more my thing, so you can see my bias)

I lost the need for speed a long time ago. 170mph in the 911 was too stable to be comfortable.

@Snow Oh, I'm not bothered about speed at all, but acceleration is definitely top on my list fo requirements in any car
so power to weight ratio is essential
Anything that comes under "comfort" or "luxury" puts me off

11:27 AM
Well that's fine. You can keep your schonky hip joints... :D

for example my Litchfield weighed 1400kg and the interior was about teh same size as the Range Rover, which is 2400kg. And they have the same power.
@Snow lol - comfortable hurts me far more than a nice wraparound recaro

I once sat in a Cayman R in a showroom. I almost had to call a salesman over to help pull me out of the damned thing.

Meanwhile I can't even get a driver's license because my eyes are screwed

11:42 AM
I'm lucky because I got my mom's old car, it's a 15y.o. ~1000kg Renault Megane, it's not looking fancy but I have quite a powerful engine. I don't have the need for speed but being able to pull quickly when someone's messing up on the highway brings a nice safety assurance to me

@Snow hahahahaha - I had something similar in a friend's TVR Cerbera

on a telephonic intervirw for 50 min
wow

did it go well?

still going
It went well.
just hang up
@RichardU I was asked, if ur in a senior role, how would u make sure u r right person for juniors and team. I told him about that I would balance things, balance my deadline/work and mentor the junior while being open to discussion and not judgemental on someone ability coz I been in harsh and good enviorment and in good, people learn a lot
donno how will it go

12:25 PM
well, the fact that the call was one hour long is already a good thing I guess
the recruiter wouldn't lose that much time If your profile wasn't good enough for the job

Is it only me who is picky about where I park?

what do you mean?

Whenever I park I have to pick a specific space

@Twyxz I'm terrible at parking so I always choose a space where I have at least two spots to manoeuver peacefully

@avazula Same. That's one of the reasons I try to come early in the morning

12:36 PM
@Twyxz I do this too

good thing, in my current job, park places are assigned by companies, so I don't look like an OCD guy when I park every day on the same spot

@Kepotx Me too! We had a bus strike during the last couple of weeks. Normally I'd get up at 6:15AM to catch my bus but now that they were canceled I'd still leave the house at 6:40AM. So instead of arriving at ~8AM I'd arrive at 7. There was literally nobody in the streets, and I loved that.

also, we are 4, one often come by bike, another one by motorbike, so I can always park how i want

@motosubatsu Literally find a corner with the biggest space or the smallest car next to it

So you don't do that idiot thing of parking right across the lines so no one else can park close to you?

12:46 PM
@Snow people get towed for doing that here

@Snow Nope but I would sure as hell park in the space available next to this person
means one less person to hit me

@Snow aka "scum parking"

@motosubatsu aka "car forum moderator parking"

do you have inside information on the mods of cars.SE that we do not?

I've been a member (but not moderator) for a few car forums.

12:56 PM
@Magisch FWIW all the Mechanics SE mods I've "met" have seemed like decent folks :)

@motosubatsu it was mainly a tongue & cheek remark

@Magisch I know :P

Wow, looks like I missed some fun.

@RichardU Nah, you're just about to bring some more
Hi you :)

@avazula hi :D
@Nofel if that question ever comes up again (good answer by the way) You can throw in "I'm very good at taking people under my wing, finding out their strengths and weaknesses, then using them where they best fit, and letting them branch out a bit to strengthen their skill set"
Hi people...I was looking over the answers for the person who was being photographed. Lots of bad advice being up-voted. "run to HR right away" is never a good idea unless either you're in danger (in which case, the police should be involved) or you have them red-handed

1:05 PM
@RichardU so you're basically saying that HR never is an option
:p

@RichardU HR is not ur friend
that should be slogan of workplace
I found out from getting kick in the teeth on my first job in uk

i suggest we edit TWC description to include

wasn't that the case some times ago?

@Kepotx It's been like this since I joined that chat

maybe it's a déjà-vu but this tag seems familiar to me

1:17 PM
no @Kepotx that wasn't the case ever
had it been, I wouldn't have done that mistake

@avazula no, just that HR IS NOT YOUR FRIEND No, in all seriousness, if you want to go to HR over someone, you want to be ready to bury them

@RichardU I know. I asked HR to know how to give my resignation notice. I did exactly what they told me. 4 hours later my manager screamed at me for 15 minutes saying I have no basic notion of how to communicate with people

A combination of Nietzsche, Sun Tzu, and Machiavelli is required when dealing with HR
HR tends to take the path of least resistance to keep the peace. You want to make it plain to them that the path of least resistance does not run right over you

2:08 PM
I backup what @RichardU said
@avazula Wait. You asked HR how to resign?

@GregoryCurrie I asked them whom I should send my resignation to, indeed
The French law says you should address it to your boss. But in a multinational company of 100,000+ people, whose boss should you talk to? The CEO, the manager?

Actually, I disagree with @RichardU about going to HR
In my experience, HR doesn't take the path of least resistance, they take the safest path for the company
I kinda think that should the OP speak to the person, he can figure out how to make her life hell
And then she has lost the initiative

2:32 PM
@GregoryCurrie But then she may have a solid case for HR

He isn't going to be blatant about it.
Well, he is blatantly taking photos, so maybe

2:46 PM
@GregoryCurrie OP has proof, another coworker witnessed it

he is blatant because he is not caught, or at least because no one told him to stop. If he knows there is a problem, he can either stop everything, or just continue just less blatantly

@avazula it is ur reporting manager in larger company
why u resigning?

@Nofel I had an opportunity to go back to healthcare. I'll soon begin a new job in IoT for people with lungs diseases. I was in endovascular surgery before.
Those opportunities are just too rare to turn them down

cool
what field of medicine are u
or healthcare

nice for you, it's always good to see someone resigning for a better job rather than to quit a bad one at all costs

2:49 PM
@Nofel I'm not a physician. I'm a IT engineer.

@avazula Just for the record, I think the OP should go straight to HR

@avazula what sort of engineer?

@Kepotx Well, I can't say I'm hopelessly sad about leaving... my current project is a nightmare :p
@GregoryCurrie idk, that's why I didn't answer btw haha
@Nofel The "jack of all trades, master of none" one.

arent we all @avazula
:D

haha, idk :)

2:51 PM
Apparently I'm good at being an arsehole
That is my skill
But as an Australian, that means I'm good at being friendly ;)
(We are arseholes to our mates)

@GregoryCurrie we're both right. It's the path of least resistance that is safest for the company.

so I got a test of 2 parts from a company
I am very slow in that test as it applies logic of converting string in alphanumberic etc etc

@Nofel but to answer your question, I graduated as an electronics and embedded systems engineer. So I'm quite good with microprocessors, soldering chips and programming FPGAs. Unfortunately there are not that many jobs available in that field right now. So I began as an AI R&D engineer. I was building websites for charities on the side, and now in my new job I'll both have to work as a backend engineer and an AI R&D engineer.

so I take it , it is not my job to do it if I am too slow?

@GregoryCurrie The thing about speaking to the person first is, she doesn't have to make any threats. Just a clear statement that the behavior is unacceptable and she wants it to stop., because the first question HR is going to ask is "Have you spoken to him about this"

2:55 PM
Which actually freaks me out because I never did build websites for a living haha

@avazula I m front end and it is cool

@Nofel It depends on what you call too slow. Also, it depends on how important this kind of task is for your future job

@Nofel I kinda enjoy it, yeah.
I'm currently building a monitor using Vue.JS. I hated it in the beginning but now that I'm past all that gibberish documentation I think it's powerful

@RichardU My gut feel, and i find it hard to quantify why, in situations such as this HR probably wouldn't ask that.

@RichardU Some actions are across the line and should not need to be spoken about. I think that sneaking taking pictures of your coworker is over that line.

2:56 PM
@Kepotx I am very slow in logic n problem solving but it is very important for my career moving forward.

im not sure what this tea is but its absolutely amazing

@RichardU Like, an extreme (and stupid) example, if he followed her home one day, I don't think HR would go "Have you asked him to not follow you home"

@IDrinkandIKnowThings agreed, but it's about proof. at this point, he could deny it.

I'm about to pay 40 quid for 2 pounds of mint tea

2:57 PM
@Kepotx oh no, I can't see it D:

this one is for AngularJS, but ic can work with several frameworks

@GregoryCurrie right, but they would want proof. In that case, a police report.

A police report isn't proof
That's just a record of complaint.

@GregoryCurrie exactly, to establish a pattern.

@Kepotx haha, that's exactly how it felt about Vue

2:58 PM
@GregoryCurrie with all the lawsuits over false accusations now, HR is a bit gunshy, which is why you need to be loaded for bear when you go in
In a case like this, you want to have everything so well documented that you could win a court case because when HR see's that level of documentation, they'll move on it because they will KNOW you have enough for a lawsuit.

@RichardU Right, and that gets harder once he knows you're onto him.
@RichardU I suppose to be fair, the OP wants to keep working with him, so going to HR is contrary to that, no matter the outcome.
I just wonder if it was a fat greasy balding man with bad body odour the wanted outcome would be different.

@GregoryCurrie that's why I posted all of those steps in my answer. If at any time before she goes to HR, the behavior stops, it's done, case closed., no problem, but if it does go all the way up to HR, she's ironclad
The best strategy is to trap your enemy, no retreat, and no way forward.
Make blowback impossible, and eliminate any defense with good documenation

@RichardU at least in military strategy, leaving no retreat to an enemy is dangerous, as he will fight for his life, while otherwise, he would just run.
so, leave no retreat only if you are sure to annihilate him before he can defend himself.
In this case, OP seems to want a solution without lawsuit or such, so only escalate if you are sure enough to win

3:18 PM
should I send partial done test to the employer and explain I get stuck
or do no send at all?

is there a time limit?

no but I told recruiter, I will send it today

Now I'm curious, are you the same @Kepotx from "se coucher moins bête?"

if you run short on time and have not finished your (pseudo)code, at least try to explain your reflection, how/why you were stuck and possible solutions you didn't have time to implement
@avazula yes, happy to see another one from this website!

:D

3:29 PM
@Kepotx thanks.
Although the problem is too unique and intresting

3:41 PM
if you don't mind, could you share it with us?
maybe only once you submit it, so you can't get suspected of cheating

@Kepotx sure

@Kepotx that's why I leave an "out" at every step. IF the behavior stops when she talks to him, she doesn't go to management, if she goes to management, and it stops, she doesn't go to HR, if she goes to HR, and it stops, she doesn't go legal. HOWEVER if it must go legal, she has clear documentation, and the coworker, as well as the company are left defenseless

1 hour later…
5:16 PM
oh wow
I almost solved the test
and solved
hurray

@Nofel good job. You have more skill and speed than you think.

@RichardU I am tooo slow
I got 2 2nd stage interview and i think it is gonna be logical testing

@Nofel I keep saying this. A slow programmer who is accurate is worth far more than a quick fool

true but its a fast paced world.
ppl want quick turnaround
I have to say, u become quick by practice
10 yrs ago, I was so bad in css, I couldn't understand dreamweaver
but something happened and i become so quick with layout
that I wowed myself
this year I wanna give it to JS.
@RichardU @Kepotx I did it, check it out github.com/mahassan/abbreviation/blob/master/app.js
Although now I read spec read is easy then what I did, lol.
I will branch out to make it the spec.
@RichardU I bought the book, "How to think like a programmer"
I couldn't pass one second problem.

5:39 PM
@Nofel don't worry. You've got your own style. Start taking photographs again

@RichardU r u refering to changing of my career?

@Nofel not suddenly, but just start doing it as a labor of love, at first, then see if you can transition.
if not, at least do it as a hobby

@RichardU do u think I m in wrong profession?
just curious coz once in start when I got laid off. I was told by my boss to focus on ur family business. I.T. isn't for u

@Nofel maybe, maybe not. But you love photography, and you should do it, regardless. I'm going to finally stop procrastinating and put my 150 voices down on a CD.

@RichardU we need 1-1

5:46 PM
@Nofel email me.

yea, we need to talk about ^
coz I can very well, help my parents business grow, while all my debt is ending in 2-3 months and move back
