why do all UK security vetting related questions always prompt lots of answers from people who don't actually know anything about it along with people who just like to copy-pasta GDPR

Kaz
@motosubatsu To be fair, when it was originally written, the question didn't mention that it was for security vetting/background check.

@Kaz that's a fair point I suppose
I hadn't quite done the math on the timing of the edit
so in that case I'm being rather unfair by saying that

mag
@motosubatsu cause GDPR is everywhere
and people think they know how it works

@motosubatsu For some reason, Americans think they are experts in the UK, and everyone thinks they are experts on India.
@mag nobody knows how GDPR works. All I know it it's causing all kinds of panic in US based internet companies trying to figure it out.

@RichardSaysReinstateMonica I'm a corporate data protection officer and I have some clue how it works for the specific use cases we have in the specific industry and area of germany we're in
but even that is quite complicated

@mag That was a bit of hyperbole on my part, think of it as the British penchant for understatement, then forget it, because it's nothing like that.

I know a fair bit about GDPR at least in the UK, but I have worked in small data based firms since it first came in so I kind of have to. I agree it's very complex and no one really understands it and just randomly quote it
Especially the distinction between customer data and client data (i.e. B2C vs B2B)

@Bee the GDPR is just slightly less complex and clandestine than the collected works of Friedrich Nietzsche

Bee
You like your philosophers @Richard

@Bee I believe it was Socrates who said "I drank what?"

Bee
I'm sure you just do it to sound smart @Richard

@Bee nah, I just do it for the snark
The fastest way to look stupid is to try to look smart, I prefer to be quiet about topics I know nothing about, thus limiting the exposure of my own foolishness to the world.
@Bee, I am, however a bit wise, but learned the wisdom from experience, which is the tuition a fool pays for being schooled in wisdom. Experience keeps a dear school, but a fool will learn in no other
I had hoped to live my life as an example, instead, I believe I serve more as a warniing

@RichardSaysReinstateMonica Wise words

@Bee Life is so backwards. When we are young, we are too busy to spouting our opinions when we know nothing, and when we are older, we are too often silent when we should speak.

Bee
You should right quotes for posters and the fronts of birthday cards @Richard

@SouravGhosh the poor sod is done, and doesn't realize it.

4:39 PM
@RichardSaysReinstateMonica yep, as much as I feel for them there's no way in a month of Sunday's they are getting that job back

4:57 PM
@motosubatsu yep. As they say, you cannot un-ring a bell. Even if everything was completely, 100% in the OP's favor, HR would have to be completely insane to rehire someone who was fired for cause under those conditions, due to future liability

@RichardSaysReinstateMonica there probably wouldn't be any future liability on the company directly (unless something absurd came out such as the company lying about the firing reason to cover up for something they weren't allowed to fire for e.g. discrimination) but it would definitely be a headache nobody would want.

@motosubatsu It's a stretch, I'll admit, but if ANYTHING were to ever happen with regards to this person, they'd be in trouble. If this person was fired again, then a lawsuit bringing up a pattern of bad behavior on the part of the company could be filed. IF someone quits BECAUSE of this person, then a good lawyer would (rightly) ask "Why did you re-hire this person when you knew about past allegations of abuse"? Nobody would risk it

@RichardSaysReinstateMonica yeah no sane hiring manager would touch rehiring them with a 10ft clown pole

@motosubatsu this is pretty much the reality. HR hates uncertainty. This employee has a lot of uncertainty around them, but there are many others who don't so OP has no chance

TH.... Er, I agree with @mag

Yes, no way does he have any sort of chance
I thought I was going to get a break and have a rest
but some inconsiderate person topped me up and I'm back in action... ahaha
I've been told by the kitchens to hand out hugs and smooches to everyone involved etc,... but I'll just give you guys a THANKS!!
