morning

Morning, and so we're at the start of another week.

mag
8:31 AM
so it goes

8:48 AM
And so the nonsense questions continue.

mag
at least we still have mods
albeit only two

Yeah, we're keeping up with things, thankfully there's no too much drama going on apart from the growing trend for obviously made-up questions.
2

mag
is the workload manageable comfortably?
they might have an election next year to get a third one as they usually do at least 3 per site, but it doesn't look like y'all will need to go back up to 5

So far so good. We don't yet know whether Jane would like to return or not, but she's waiting out the Monica Situation (which in itself has no clear resolution timeline).

mag
true that
bit sad that we all had to put up 16k and SE is still biding their time on this

9:02 AM
Yeah, it's frustrating. And it seems as though momentum has slowed down somewhat and people are going back to normal again. There's only so long that dogs can chase cars before they get tired and go back to sniffing lamp posts.

mag
Thats the chronology of every outrage. The fatigue is real and sustaining anger is emotionally draining, so people stop after a while. But that doesn't mean they've forgotten. The next thing will be even bigger, more ugly and more hurtful as a direct consequence of this.
At least monica has a fighting chance thanks to the gofundme, although I don't like her chances from what I know about US law and the situation. Still, it was necessary to send that message

9:23 AM
I guess people are waiting to see what the outcome of that is.

mag
they'll be waiting for a long time, though. Defamation lawsuits can take many years, and news are always slow in these scenarios. If it goes the full on lawsuit route, we'll probably next hear about it 2-3 years down the line when they go into discovery or settle

I suspect that SE will just want to pay her off.

mag
I don't suspect they will. I think they'll fight this on a principle basis, as they do not think they made any error in handling this situation
and also because even 17k is chump change when it comes to a full on defamation lawsuit, and they know that monica doesn't have the 400.000-800.000$ laying around that a full discovery phase might cost

10:10 AM
16k? USD? Wow, the things I could do to make a better life for a whole countries kids with that much and you chaps threw it away.... sad

mag
@Kilisi we didn't throw it away
also, you probably make more in a month then most people who contributed

The craziest thing about the third World and developing countries is that 5 million in aid money can go to govt and all turn to dust, yet a single guy can put his hand in his pocket and with 10k make a huge difference countrywide
@mag I doubt it, I don't make much money, and it either goes on my 5 kids or the educational resources I create.

mag
@Kilisi mhm. 17k would be the majority of my savings right now

@mag I got maybe $200 in the bank right now
$60 something in cash in my wallet. I'm by no means rich

mag
you got a house, though
I don't have any real investments besides a small amount of stock and some silver and gold coins, and my savings in my bank account

10:23 AM
yes, I'm debt free

mag
I rent my apartment

well, I'm happy enough, money isn't a big issue.... we grow a lot of our food
if I tried living in your country on my income I guess I'd be very poor.... here I'm relatively well off

mag
true, it's all relative
I can comfortably afford living here and save a good chunk of my salary. If I had the same salary in silicon valley I'd be homeless

yep.... mine is all clean money so my kids can be proud of me... and that's all that matters

mag
someone I know is making six figures and has a roommate
and his apartment is not a nice place, nor in a nice place of town

10:30 AM
yeah, some cultures value $$ more than others.... some individuals do as well... for me it's there to be spent.... bring my kids up to stand on their own feet confidently and my bit is done
I actually spend more just on school fees than most people here make in a year if they're under manager level. But I'm old and simple, don't spend much at all on myself

mag
what's the average salary in your place like for people?

10:56 AM
@mag in USD it would be about $1 an hour
huge unemployment though, stats are crappy because they count women living at home as workers and people living in the bush as workers since they work the land for food
so a family might have no water supply or electricity or income, but still be classed as fully employed in the statistics. They don't even own the land they live on, it's village land
while I have freehold land, a brick house, water tank, some solar and a car and cash every so often... so I'm doing pretty well

mag
11:35 AM
oh, thats indeed a bit different. Minimum wage is 8.50€ / h here.
and we have central plumbing, electricity and water in most places.

11:56 AM
@Kilisi most people in the "first world" don't understand how much damage "help" can do. One major cause of the starvation in Africa in the 1980s was all the aid in the 1970s. Uncle Sugar and his European friends thought that it would be wise to donate a massive collection of high-end farm equipment to various nations.
The only problem was they donated these items to nations that didn't have the means to maintain them. So, end result was an initial massive boost of food availability, followed by famine when the tractors and other equipment broke down

12:18 PM
@Snow I've noticed that the quality of questions have dropped sharply

1:02 PM
Yup. People just want to have fun & rep.

@Snow I like rep
Greetings

I like big rep and I cannot lie

@motosubatsu Love it.

mag
@MisterPositive are we planning to do anything about that or is it just a "smile and nod for the ride" type situation

that and coffee
@mag I am not sure what you are talking about. If your talking about bad questions, I hope the community closes them down.

mag
1:08 PM
I don't even drink or like coffee, your move neo

@mag Coffee is the nectar of the gods....

mag
@MisterPositive No I mean passably plausible but likely flat out made up ones

Bee
I don't think they are always bad questions per say

@mag VTC

mag
I guess the best thing then it to curb them from HNQ as they move into it, which I noticed y'all have been doing

Bee
1:09 PM
More just hypothetical situations

Or Flag them

mag
maybe I'm getting more cynical as life goes on but I see a lot more "this reads like a creative writing exercise complete with story arc and suspense rather then a real problem experienced by a real person" then I used to.

Q: If I am followed on GitHub and Twitter by mostly liberals, will I be taken by future employers as a liberal myself?

notmySOaccountBackground I live and work in a midwestern suburb in the US (a moderate but liberal area). I am a developer but I don't work in anything politics related. Context In my spare time, I like to use elections and legislative data (US) to do small analytics projects. I often create maps, charts, et...

mag
the one with data processing in china is suspect too

@mag Generally people are wrapping a perfectly simple question up in a web of gratuitous and unnecessary detail. If a question seems to be more story than question, it seems logical to assume that it's more of a story than it is a question.

mag
1:14 PM
you mean like asking "how do I go about warning and disciplining an insubordinate employee" with so many words and a full story likely to elicit strong opinions in both directions as to the legitimacy of the request?

That one was particularly worthy of head-shaking, yes.
Almost worth migrating to Writing.SE.

Q: My company sends extremely sensitive data to a contractor in China, but says it doesn't. Should I do anything?

hwbI work as a developer in a midsized startup that has around 200 people and ~50k customers. Our privacy policy says we don't share customer data with any third party, except that we certainly do - we send each customer's extremely sensitive data to a contractor in China for processing, which give...

this one?

@Snow nah, we don't do writing critiques over there :P

And we shouldn't migrate crap.

Definitely not

mag
1:18 PM
@MisterPositive yas
I struggle to come up with a plausible scenario for this except that someone is writing about what it would be like to be a whistleblower

I was surprised that those stinkers were not closed.

mag
in a above details, internally inconsistent kind of way
looking it up, I didn't vtc it, I probably should have
then again we have reviewers who have a close:leave open ratio of 1:37

1:34 PM
You know, I have never posted for Rep. It just kinda happens. I guess my style resonates with people.
@MisterPositive fewer and fewer people are voting these days.

mag
I mean, you'll usually have 3-4 people reviewing close votes in a given day the last couple of weeks
the others are merely incidental

1:52 PM
@mag I don't VTC or flag, or do anything administrative any more, except in rare circumstances.

mag
or rather, merely organically coming across posts.
on the upside I get over 10 reviews in most days because there are enough

2:14 PM
@mag that's the worst case of netlag that I have seen in quite some time

mag
@RichardSaysReinstateMonica hm?

@mag just my attempt at humor. Your two posts were quite a few minutes apart. I also forgot your age. You've never encountered lag on a text-based chat

2:41 PM
Ah, my downvote stalker strikes again. :D

@RichardSaysReinstateMonica aid is a big business on many levels, but the leaders don't actually care if people starve, thats a food thing, it's grounds for asking for more aid.... the leaders don't miss a single meal
*good
most corrupt regimes would be hanging from trees if their leaders weren't funded by Aid money from overseas and backed by overseas military. Most of the Pacific has agreements in place where they can call overseas military against their own people if there is any sort of uprising of the people being unhappy about losing their land or anything else.
So most real advances are done by private people using their own assets to accomplish them. I do a huge amount of free work for a couple of countries, but I donate straight to the teachers and kids. I've even been called up and complained to by a king because I wasn't doing it through govt channels which would have seen all my work taken over and turned to dust. But since I funded everything and didn't ask for permission, I just smiled.

@Kilisi It's getting to the point where that's true for some spots in the USA as well. Domino's Pizza is fixing roads, P*rnhub is plowing roads, and Elon Musk is fixing the water in Flint Michigan.
There are parts of the USA that have all the same problems as you do, including having the military
called in on them
Despite the posse comitatus act.

Well, people do what they can. Just shocks me a bit when I see money being thrown away which I can think of excellent uses for. But end of the day, I get more accomplished if I don't look for funding or add other parties, because that becomes a business.
My issue wasn't with my work, the HOS loved it, it was about why was I getting the funding instead of the proper people who had failed every funded project they ever had. Once he realised I wasn't being funded and had zero intention of funding the complainers, he didn't care and emailed all and sundry to stop bugging him complaining. After which we had a little drink and the bodyguards escorted me to my car
we even sang a patriotic song.... both of us terrible singers
I did get some nasty looks from the bg's, but I was pretty sure I could take them both if I had to... so I was giving them a hard time just for amusement value ;)
