Hard to see why this is getting downvoted and even a close vote in less than 1/2 an hour... it's a common enough issue in many workplaces
oops I linked to the answer not the question... the question is the one getting downvoted and VTC

Q: Dealing with unfairness in the workplace

user22119The compensation in my job is highly dependent on new income streams that I produce for my team. However in my team there are several existing income streams that need to be maintained. My issue now is that I happened to join the team at a time when someone needed to take over the maintenance ...

Good morning Y'all

Morning. Another fun Dilbert day for me today.

@Snow yea? you got a strip?

Well, pick any random one you want and it'll probably fit.

Yep, that fits. We're currently working with a consultancy company and seeing different email addresses pop up and other ones disappear. So much so that my immediate thought is "What? Who are you?"

lol
The chances of me pulling that speciffic dilbert and it being applicable were astronomical

Like I said...

Very quiet in here today.

11:41 AM
Everyone else is obviously somewhere more exciting than here.

So, not at work then
I had a day off yesterday (packing house before moving internationally) so today feels like a monday to me.

@Snow I was in a meeting.. so not sure "more exciting" applies :)

So random question, I've got a non-IT friend who would like me to mentor them while they study AWS certifications and try to get into SysAdmin in IT. I have never done anything like that before, but I think the guy is worth investing a little time in to help him. Anyone ever had a similar situation? any pitfalls or anything I should watch our for? (other than vampires)
They are 25~ so not a child.

@Tolmera yeah been there before - do they have any IT aptitude already?

not sure, I think they have a good mind for it, he is a "Audio Technician", familiar with using software, and can converse/understand logic structures, but no idea how to assess them for 'suitability' for IT per se.

@TolMera that sounds like a decent enough starting position
One of the most important things is to set/determine their expectations at the outset, are they expecting to walk into a high paying job? how much time do they expect this to take? how much time do they expect you to give?

@motosubatsu Ok, I guess that would set my expectations as well. Or scare them off haha.

I guess I can be somewhat prescriptive aswell.

@TolMera it's a good way of knowing what you're both getting yourself into

2:08 PM
@motosubatsu Is it something that I should formalize? it almost feels silly because it's a friend, and I don't want to drive them off (feel rather honoured to be asked)

@TolMera I wouldn't say you have to go that far.. a chat over a pint about what their aims are would be sufficient

@motosubatsu Thanks :) I will start there :) I'm not sure if this is 'technically workplace' heh, hopefully it's reasonable for the chat room though.

@TolMera totally fine for in here.. while I'd say it's suitable for the main site I doubt you'd get it past the Close Brigade

chat is pretty casual so as long as it's not inhibiting site discussion I wouldn't worry about it @TolMera

:)

@Snow I'm skipping some meetings to go to a funeral. This is what you call lose-lose. (I mean, I want to go to the funeral, but really I want it not to have been necessary.)

Darn, that sucks Monica.

Synagogue friends. (That synagogue.)

@MonicaCellio may I ask that?

@MonicaCellio Sorry to hear about everything to do with that Monica, truly terrible business :(

@TolMera the synagogue in Pittsburgh that was attacked on Saturday by a neo-Nazi. That's one of the two synagogues I attend regularly. (I was at the other one at the time.)

2:29 PM
Oh, sorry to hear. I have not been keeping up with the news, so had no idea

@MonicaCellio I've been meaning to write something about this since I first heard and... I've not, because I can't figure out a way to say anything meaningful. But I don't think that I really can, so I'll just say that situation sucks so much and I'm sorry you have to go through it

@enderland thank you. It sucks, yes. The community, both locally and more broadly, has been coming together, which helps.

Oh. That's terrible. And it brings things closer to home.

@MonicaCellio My condolences to you all.
