6:03 AM
Who's Monica?
and who the heck uses twitter anyway?

@Kilisi one of the least controversial people on the network
also one of our mods

@Magisch well she certainly seems to have upset herself, hope it works out for her

@Kilisi Have you been to MSE in the past week?
Half the network is mighty pissed off
especially mods are pissed off to an unprecedented amount

6:19 AM
@Magisch I just look at the questions on my sites, don't really do anything else... only started coming to chat recently just because I couldn't understand why some users were leaving

there might be another wave of that coming

not really something that worries me, it's just the internet... shouldn't take it too seriously
can't really understand getting that upset unless there was money involved... this isn't a job

@Kilisi for me, it's more then a job
I have money, it's not a present issue for me
this is my passion

@Kilisi Monica is one of our site moderators. As for the Twitter, haven't you heard the news? It is used to change anything you want at Stack Exchange...
257
A: Revisiting the "Hot Network Questions" feature, what are our shared goals for having it?

MagischThe PR and optics of this discussion could not be worse and less fortunately timed if someone tried to orchestrate it that way. Some things happened yesterday that caused a need for us to (quickly) remove a site's eligibility to contribute to the list of hot network questions. What hap...

I'm a software developer and quite frugal. I could quit my job right now and wait a year before getting another one without going broke. But SE is personal, I spent hundreds of hours of my free time which is very valueable to me here

6:26 AM
@gnat it appears I'm a sheltered schoolgirl, never actual gone on twitter, just heard the name
@Magisch I can understand that, I donate quite a bit of time as well, just have no intention of letting it upset me...
you may not believe it but people have tried quite hard to upset me on SE, just that my English isn't great so it just amuses me a bit rather than bites deep.

I do get upset when bad things happen to people and things I care about
It's just in my nature

@Magisch good for you, shows a bit of empathy, very worthy trait to have (Y)
I don't even know what IPS is... is it worth me finding out? Sounds like a nightmare every time it's mentioned

interpersonal skill stack exchange
it is what the title implies, people asking about how to become better at socializing
sometimes there are colorful questions, some people are astoundingly oblivious, a lot of stuff about traditionally deviant social behaviors

ahhh... no good for me then, my social skills are not very PC in the first World :-)

otherwise normal, really
the bad rap comes from the fact that it's quite a subjective topic for a SE model site to be tackling
and from some of the less fortunate questions that through virtue of clickbait end up on HNQ

6:35 AM
I don't even look at the HNQ..... I'll stay out of everything and just quietly do my own thing in the background

Happy Monday's to y'all :D

Evening Twyxz
@Magisch out of interest, which is your passion? The site and how it works? Or helping people?

both
the network does lend itself to be very helpful in general, to a variety of people on a variety of topics
I like writing answers, but I also like curating it
feels like doing something worthwhile

it is doing something worthwhile
I contemplated getting a bit more involved a month ago, but decided I'm doing my bit already. We can't all jump in the deep end.
kudos to those of you who do

7:30 AM
Morning all.

@TolMera Morning :)

yello
Saw someone ask a question about a 'flaky personality'. Can anyone explain what a flaky personality is? :p

unreliable personality is what I think is meant.

Ah! thanks

Hi @summer
You're back :)

7:44 AM
Yes, the weekend is over :p

Was beginning to think Summer was over :o
these jokes need to stop...

It's 12C outside and I visited a christmas fair yesterday so certainly feels like it

Summer's a jet-setter, a few months in the north, a few months in the south. Ahh the life.

12C is warm
?
For this time of the yaer hahaha

Hm nah I think it's pretty normal
It was 25C a week ago, that's warm for this time of year :p

7:57 AM
it was 20C yesterday where I am hahah
it's meant to be highs of 14-16 today

It'll be 16C tomorrow but after that will probably stick around 12-10 so I hope so
I'm ready for sweater weather

I hate cold weather hahah I prefer to wear less clothes than more

I don't like heat too much

I don't like weather tbh, I should just be able to be "just right" for time.
Is that so much to ask for?

Well a new VR life is just around the corner where weather can be anything you want.

8:11 AM
but the temperature
Hmmm
I'm just waiting for a VR Mmorpg to take over the world, and everything just hops into this world and it's just madness
it'll happen one day, and if it doesn't i'll make it myself

Well temperature can be arranged too. Maybe we'll all end up in womb like bubbles :p
I love the idea of a vr mmorpg but I also see myself being the first person to die from it because I'm probably never coming out again :p

@Twyxz Well you're a suitable drop in for "Akihiko Kayaba." from Sword Art Online

I always had a vision of putting on a suit and it puts you in a virtual world, where your physical condition is the limit
so basically your skills and stuff come from your real life ability to fight and stuff, but then you get stats, equipment and all that (cosmetics of course, how else am I going to make money)
it would be a very addicting way to do exercise

I've always though VR would be a boon to IT people, it's movement and exercise and all those good things.
Like Kalesthenics

Why IT people specifically tho?

8:23 AM
stereotypically lazy (rofl)
play games not exercise. Mix the two together, what happens

Yeah but even with 'today's youth' you can already see a huge increase in gaming and less going outside to play and stuff
Every 10 year old plays fortnite

The only kids you see in the street, are the chavs that drink and smoke from 10

Because IT people have a stereotypical low activity workplace, so even if you're an active person outside work, you're still spending a lot of time not moving.

I think my US friends said it's not common there for children to just play in the street so idk about other countries but it used to be super normal for kids here to just be outside and play.

Also, it's all weather :)

8:26 AM
@TolMera Doesn't that count for any other person with a desk job though? :p

Like imagine being the king/queen of a mmorpg world which you're engaged in. And everyone just follows you about like a God hahaha all the power you wanted but in the game

@Summer I agree yes, but in my workplace, everyone except the IT people at least get up from their desks occasionally and fetch stuff from the printers, or go talk to people in other offices or deal with packages etc. The IT People just dont do any of that at all.
The most walking around I do in the office is making myself a coffee

If they make VR into a full on simulation, like people can pay to go into simulation chambers and its just a massive game but you dont need equipment its all holographic around you
Excited for the future of games
hopefully in my lifetime hahaha

I think the risk of injury in a game like environment might be a bit high for a real virtual environment. but I would love that myself
I'm heavily considering writing a VR environment for remote workplaces.
Been thinking about it for ages.
Something where you can be a coder like myself, and if you want to talk to a colleague, you can actually go over to them and talk to them.

that would be extremely strange
but sounds interesting

8:36 AM
But also making it possible to look at someone's screen and point at something physically, and have that represented in the virtual wortld
So as a remote worker, where showing/sharing work is really hard, it would make it 'easier'

Well if I work remotely I just use slack or skype? What would the VR bit add to that?

@Summer the ability to see your colleagues, and to point, gesticulate, or look over someones shoulder to see if they are busy.

hmmm but skype is free
and very simple hahaha

Mmm it's not a solution for everyone :)
I also love the idea of having infinite screen lol, just drop yourself in a bubble that is screen, so 360 display etc.

i'd rather be able to go over to my colleagues and virtually punch them
if you could create that
then I'd be in to pay

8:39 AM
lol
VR workplace boxing.

yes. pls.
but you have to have the suits
so they can feel it hahahaha

You know the moment they bring out VR suits the whole world's economy is just going to collapse..

Do you know that feeling when in hindsight you should have just called in sick a few days ago because now you have to deal with not taking a break when you needed to?
My brain is all over the place today.

It's going to be like Avatar, freeze your bodily state and off into an alternate world
and I'll be in the world forever

I do like that in VR you could just shut yourself out completely, no distractions if you can't handle that

8:42 AM
that would be amazingggggggggg, live in the game. You need to buy food and stuff

@Summer yes! when you get to work and after making your coffee and sitting at your desk staring at your screen, you realise you're brains just not going to play ball today.

but it gives you the opportunity to develop things that wouldn't exist irl, weapons etc, no laws. Or maybe laws but you could actually fight the law hahaha

Lol @Twyxz in real life you can fight the law, but I think just like in a Game, the law is probably going to be OP

but the law in real life is OP?
they have guns
I have no protection

@TolMera yeah I feel like I need to focus to calm my mind yet i can't focus because my mind isn't calm :')

8:45 AM
@Summer Music?

Yeah just put my headphones on, let's hope it works

Morning all

Morning :)

actually lots of IT people are pretty active. I'm an engineer, cabling, racking, lugging equipment around etc,.

lol someone just started working on cables in the ceiling right behind me, that is really helping me.

8:51 AM
@Kilisi I think he meant just him :)) Talking for himself hahaha

I do a solid hour of Pokemon Go every workday so I feel like I count as pretty active.

hahaha

@Summer You still play Pokémon go?
is that still a thing

Yes

@motosubatsu Gmorning! :)

8:52 AM
It's not what it used to be but still pretty active
I started again because I just liked that I had a group to walk with but I do actually enjoy it for the hour a day. Don't play it much outside of work though.

try setting up some racks, UPS's are 50kg each, never mind the servers and the rack itself. Then you still got to do the switches, patch panels and cabling once you got it set up.

Do you do that all day though? That'd be quite nice

me?

Mmm.... @Kilisi true enough, guess I'm thinking about software people, but that's probably too much of a stereotype as well.

yeah, I have no idea what engineers do all day tbh
Does it mostly involve setting up stuff?

8:55 AM
no, some would do racking a lot, but most wouldn't

Well I guess it's a welcome change of scenery once in a while?

Engineering is a big field, I do pretty much everything from cabling to networking. So all infrastructure, all configuration, server builds and maintenance, that sort of thing. Then end user support.
I'll sweep their floor if they want to pay my rate... hahaha

End user support always seems hard to me... I think I'd get frustrated lol

depends where you are and you position, I've done everything from install equipment on planes to chipping and networking a chain of petrol stations

Sounds nice and diverse :)

8:59 AM
end user support is usually the entry grade, it's great for building a network of people who think you're a whizzkid though

lol

yeah it can be diverse, it's humdrum user support and networking for most people though. All in one building. I did my time doing that.
Software on the other hand I find interesting, because you can invent things without expensive tools and infrastructure
only problem is I'm useless at it

LOL
Well as long as they don't know...

I think there's something severely wrong with my diet :/

I agree, it's got the word 'diet' in it

9:12 AM
ahahaha... not enough pies probably

Mmm pies

I'm already so hungry >.>
Couldn't say goodbye to my weekend yet and ended up staying up til 3:30

Morning fellas

@Nofel Welcome back
You're alive

Hello!

9:15 AM
Morning @Nofel

@Kilisii Too many maybe
My hairdresser said I was getting fat

yes, I am alive and rocking.

Last time I went he said I was looking a lot broader, like I'd been hitting the gym

That's a rude hairdresser

@Twyxz so long as she doesn't tell you you're going bald you're still good

9:16 AM
now my heads chubby apparently hahahah
I told him I was "bulking" hahahh

@motosubatsu morning mate

but I think its the cakes haha

Uhg just got another company social invite in the mail again. The month of november now counts 10 social invites... These people need to get a life.

What are these personal invitations?
Or like 10 businesses inviting you to their end of year stuff

No it's the company I work for. I do interim work and they try to keep all the employees in touch by organizing a shit ton of events
This one is for a table tennis tournament.
There's also a fifa tournament this friday.

9:23 AM
Ok that sounds kinda messed up

They have pizza nights, movie nights, you name it, they've organised it.
Yes
And it's gotten to a point where there's at least 1 but usually 2 a week

I've heard working for Google is like that, you're expected to be part of the "family" and live to work.

They aren't mandatory but they'll try to group-pressure and shame you into coming.

Reminds me of "the circle"

I got my first invite that mentioned 'mandatory' last week however. A designer get together from friday morning til saturday morning.

9:26 AM
I really couldn't be bothered for something like that
I like going home and sleeping
doing my own things

I don't even own an airbed or anything
They better fix hotel rooms or I'm not staying over

Then again I like the sound of a fifa tournament, and table tennis tournament hahahaha
I'm too competitive to be doing things like that with work
Bridges will be burnt hahaha

I would probably have stuck around for a bit if I worked in their building, but I am really not prepared to start socializing that much after my work hours

Hey guys. I've decided to put in my notice, persue a new career. I won't be around much more, so I came to say goodbye and thanks.

If a business does that kind of thing, it's nice to have a set day, like Wednesday nights or Friday nights where there's something planned, or just a trip to the pub. Then you can plan to be social. As apposed to random social events.

9:30 AM
@Belle-Sophie :'( You're a great person. I hope you find the perfect position!

@avazula Thanks ava ^^ <3

@Belle-Sophie well it's been nice to meet you, haven't had much of a chance to interact, but it's been fun anyway.

@Belle-Sophie Pet your lovely cats for me :D

@Belle-Sophie Sad to see you go :( What you going to be doing from now on?

@Belle-Sophie Good luck with the new adventures!

9:34 AM
Thanks! I've decided I'm going to study photography/art and work as a delivery girl to pay for tuition

Delivery is a good way to make money, consistent steady strong income, just the hours it eats up. good luck! :)

Sounds like quite a change.

Snow's doing that thing where he's busy and he just lurks but doesn't try to engage in any conversations... o.o
I see u

Dipping in and out, mostly out. Took my car in for a service this morning and picked up the courtesy car. Turns out theyve given me the worst car in the entire Porsche range.

9:49 AM
Poor Snow, that must be so tough.

@Summer People these days :P

@Twyxz I know, right

@TolMera Stuck with a terrible Porsche :P

I did get offered a Nespresso, so I guess that made up for the disappointment.

@Snow hahahaha coffee beats all

9:52 AM
We're at a pretty small service shop and they don't have porsches as courtesy cars actually. They only do porsches though so come to think of it that's actually quite weird.

I'm confused now

About what

Polarisation I think

Understandable

2 hours left of my day but I've still got 30 mins lunch and 1 hour of travelling for a 30 minute meeting so I'm basically finished

10:02 AM
Sounds good
I'm not even halfway there yet :p

How unfortunate for you ;)

10:48 AM
Anyone want to go into 50/50 cafe business with me hahahahha my other halfs mother is rather lost when it comes to running a business

The route to any business success is making it dog-friendly.

If you would go to a carehome specifically to have your sunday dinner just make a noise
plus, no dogs

11:15 AM
Wow listen to those crickets...

exactly haahhah thats about it

never even seen a porsche here and Snow gets one for a courtesy car.... nice
do they drive as well as they look?

@Kilisi Remember its the worst one

@TolMera sorry I couldn't hear the crickets over the sound of someone in the office crunching incredibly loud snacks. Headphones: engaged

@motosubatsu That guy is me pretty much ahhaha

11:19 AM
Are small offices a thing of the past? Like having a door you can shut...
Seems the businesses I apply to all do this "open plan" thing, which is just kinda shit.

Open plan is cheaper

Personally I would say in my area, Open plan is the way forward

I'm an IT guy, don't talk to me! send me an Email or use office chat.

not seen an office since i'd started working life

@Twyxz I can deal with it..as long as it's reasonably confined to a lunchtime window. Had a minion once who crunched effing carrot sticks 7 hours a day, 5 times a week

11:20 AM
Go look at the recent post on why open plan is better

@Twyxz open plan sucks a giant bag of donkey genitalia

8
Q: Why do tech companies use open-space?

Joshua FoxOpen-space offices have clear disadvantages. What motivates software companies to use open-space for developers? It is not -- Cost. Employee compensation is far more than office rental costs Misbeliefs that open-space offices are more efficient. That may explain some cases, but in a free mark...

@RoryAlsop Mmm I can understand that.

I've grown top like it hahah

@Twyxz yea I read it when it first came out

11:22 AM
only plugged cos I answered it hahahah

I got 3 offices, sort of workshop +office in different locations, all got doors s:-)... no porsche though

@Kilisi most don't, no. They are status symbols, not driver's cars. They generally corner like dogs. That said, the Cayman is a beautiful track day car - blows the other 911's out of the water

@RoryAlsop that's because 911s have the engine in the wrong place

Yup

@RoryAlsop cool

11:23 AM
Someone just downvoted my answer hahahah

before I came here I had a lot of Ford V8's, but old ones, XT and XY Falcons mostly

@Twyxz that would be me.. I forgot to do so at the time

Sad times

@motosubatsu lol

@Kilisi well... A Porsche will drive much better than them :-)

11:25 AM
Is "Flag to close" the same as vote to close?

probably, but I bet they're more fun ;)

@TolMera Pretty much

kk taa

nothing like sliding around corners going up hill in one of those tanks

@Twyxz I didn't downvote, but everything in your answer is why I hate open plan offices for me and my team.

11:26 AM
@RoryAlsop I answered the question though, that was the aim

I'm more about fun than speed, I had the motorbikes for speed

@Kilisi I have only ever driven a falcon once and it was great fun!

Why companies use it, I gave a list of reasons why haha

@Twyxz and it was a good answer. I may even give it an upvote

@RoryAlsop yeah, they're cool, look good too

11:27 AM
@Twyxz nah.. you gave the PR reasons companies tell employees why the use Open Plan

and cheap.... used to get them for around 1000 NZD back in the day, would need a bit of work, but I had a yard

the only reasons a company uses them is because it's cheaper

but that was on there too

yeah but the rest of it was aforementioned PR reasons
plus you hinted that Hot desking might actually be a good thing
it never has been
ever
in the history of desks and hot things
it's actually one of my straight up deal breakers

@motosubatsu why?

11:29 AM
Off for that 1 hour travel see y'all in a bit

<wave />

@TolMera it ruins comfort, ergonomics, productivity, causes huge office politics/arguments and hugely discriminates against any one with disabilities

Ok.

basically it's how the devil organises his offices

I understand reasons 1, 2, 4 and 5. Productivity I see being smashed because of those.

11:31 AM
pretty much yeah :)

I hear Steam (the game engine) has hotdesking, but you literally have your desk that you wheel away to join another team.
I have my own Keyboard, Mouse and Chair at work, so Comfort and Ergonomics are pretty important to me.

You brought your own chair into work?

(why oh why are U and I so close)

@TolMera yeah that's marginally less sucky.. but only in the same way that HIV is marginally less sucky than full blown AIDS

lol @motosubatsu
@Summer yes, the chairs here gave me back problems to the point where I was going to be hospitalised.

11:34 AM
But you have a set desk then I guess? It's all 'flex' here, even though everyone usually sits at the same desk. They'd still be sorta allowed to use your chair.

It's actually the desk that's the problem, they are about 5cm too short, so everyone either slouches or slides their but forward in their chair and puts a whole ton of strain on their backs. I just purchased a chair that could both recline and drop to toddler height
Oh, yea people can grab my chair if I'm not using it, I don't mind that. But it's mine.
and yes, we have set desks, but 4 hot desks

The desks here are pretty fancy, they can go very low and very high. But JUST not high enough to use as a standing desk. It sucks.

Mmm I would love a desk that could move up/down and tilt, I used to have one, and it's awesome

They're rounded at the front though which causes me to slouch. I like to be pressed against the desk a little.

@Summer you..erm..might want to rephrase that one

11:39 AM
ditto

Well we don't all think with our dongs. Plus I have no idea to rephrase, English is not my first language.

@Summer you're not English? had me fooled

Nope!
I don't feel like 'I need pressure against my stomach' makes it any better lol

Mmm @motosubatsu how would you reword it? I can't think of anything either and I am a native english speaker.

@TolMera probably "like to sit snugly up to the desk"

11:43 AM
Anyway I think in a way I use it to support my back.

Mmm I do that so I can have my arms flat on the table, it limits the amount that I slouch... I like the desks that have a bit of a cut out, but they are rarely as good as they could/should be.

Yeah I have a shitty desk at home but a chair I love so I guess it's never perfect

heh... Back to the VR from earlier, get VR! that's totally going to fix this workplace ergonomic stuff! Ya know, type on an invisible keyboard in mid air :) <troll>

It better still have chroma lights

I bet there would be a business in designing art for VR workplaces. Every week your company has a new board room with a new outlook. Meetings at the top of Everest or Angel falls. That would be cool

12:01 PM
I think I'd be distracted

12:52 PM
You could literally change your workplace daily
drag and drop those walls

We just spoke about that! it's all open plan it's cheaper ;)
expensive thing walls.

@Summer what is your first language then
Not if they're VR walls?
