@GrayCygnus Need to think it through, and there wasn't anyone here so I asked a mod to redact it (unless it was you?!) I'll repost once I've ruminated some more.

I am vert old over there

in my profile under question

wow times has changed. It use to make me do www.abc.com/example

Reformtted my first post for better profiling

Morning @ChristopherEstep
afternoon here

The world revolves around the US Eastern time zone. Haven't you heard? :)
'Merica!!

whats merica

1:16 PM
It's something people say when they act like a jingoistic nationalist (not to be confused with a white nationalist, nationalism isn't inherently bad). It's usually a pejorative though, said with a southern accent as though a "redneck" were saying it. The image it is intended to invoke is one of pickup trucks, guns and flag waving.
It's short for "America"

Must feel like god's wrath in america to the christians right now
a giant expanding forest fire, several hurricanes, half of texas is still underwater from harvey

All due to trump
that moron doesn't belief is climate change

In all fairness no
Even if there was a guy who 100% believed in climate change and was doing something about it the effects of doing something about it have a lot of latency

yea but believing is first step. It is like my country Pakistan
where ppl come in power to earn money by any means
the country can go f**k itself
yet they claim it is for there own better what we are doing
mother nature is nice but cruel too

Mother nature isn't actually a thing
climate change and weather doesn't give a lick about whether or not you believe in it

1:24 PM
@Nofel You realize that hurricanes existed before the industrial revolution, right? Really, really bad ones.

It's all cause and effect, the weather doesn't hold grudges
It just ... is

Also, weather and climate are completely different things. Too many people don't get that and need to stop blaming weather on climate change. it's weather.

NO i MEAN

There's no antrophomorphism to weather. It's the sum total of environmental factors acting together. There's no unified consciousness to nature.

humans are reason
using nature ruthless

1:25 PM
Humans are the reason for a part of it

no @ChristopherEstep I don't
I remember Noah

But the world had ice ages and runaway warming and giant supervolcanoeruptions and massive earthquakes and whole continent floods before humanity existed

Given that it's a poltical subject, I'd rather not discuss it here.

which flooded thr world.
lets take out politics and dicuss

politics, religion and anything "gender" will always devolve a discussion.

1:26 PM
Not about to discuss religion in here

I like to educate myself.

let's talk about work. :)

Not talking about religion, just saying all i know about one bad and worse flooding that was in time on noah
thats all.

So you're across the pond, @Nofel, what part?

work, my manager is stuck

1:28 PM
@Nofel I don't think good can come from this discussion. We're on different premises. I'm an atheist and you're not. And this chat isn't the place to hash out whether god exists or not

unable to screw my mind
coz he screwed his things
@Magisch I have atheist friends. I am open to all.
I live and let live, I do like to educate and talk.
@ChristopherEstep UK
moved 2 yrs back coz of my mrs.
My manager has been saying f*** word for days now.
I was going through his profile, 10 yrs of exp yet he doesn't know shortcut.
why people who has more knowledge are doubtful
and those with less are over

I figured UK, was just wondering what country. I have a friend from England who was always particular to say "I'm British" to which I said, "Yeah, but you're from England so that also makes you English." He replied, "I said I'm British" lol
My ancestry is English and Scottish, but that's about 330 years ago.

I'm from the land of kraut and wurst

1:43 PM
I have no german ancestry. My grandfather was Bohemian though. Not Germany, but vaguely in the neighborhood.

Anyone know if it's possible to turn off notifications for comments on your post? There's a debate going on in the comments, and I really don't need to be notified every time someone replies.

How do u guys know your ancestry

@ChristopherEstep Interesting, my family is Bohemian as well. Whenever I tell people they're like "Huh? What's that?"

yea I wanna ask that too
what's that

It's now the Czech Republic

1:46 PM
oh

@Nofel In the US, since no one except for Native Americans are actualy from the America, knowing where your family is from is a common topic of interest here.

I was hoping to have me done the DNA test
those fancy thing
find ur anchestor
donno if that is true or what
60 pound for that

Easiest way to find your ancestors is Genealogy. These days, most can be done online, though I did a lot of mine with microfilm, microfiche and books.

@Nofel I personally don't think they're worth the money, but I also don't trust them to be accurate

Though What I am keen to know is about my genetics
Gosh, I am seeing a wrkship on pluralsight

1:51 PM
Do you mean genetic markers for diseases and such?

its 6 hours and its so boring
yea @DavidK

When will I not have the urge to punch random drive by down voters. Have the stones to explain your vote! ( Putting soap box away now )

@Nofel Again, maybe I'm a skeptic, but I just don't trust it to be accurate. These sorts of genetic tests aren't held to the same scrutiny and standards as actual medical tests, so there's no way to know what they're telling you is accurate or not.
Just gets you worrying about something you probably don't need to.

UK medical system sucks
I had problem with eye and keep telling my GP, last week in 2 yrs the guy (optician) got it.
I saw that problem in my elder bro but he decline it right away
I however wanna find out why

@MisterPositive Don't sweat it. You're never going to please everyone.

Q: User posted answer after it was closed?

David KI just happened to see the question Is it okay to whistle while at the office? and noticed that this answer was posted 32 minutes ago. However, the question was put on hold 53 minutes ago. How is this possible? Shouldn't putting a question on hold prevent any new answers being posted?

2:43 PM
@ChristopherEstep Very true. Grateful to have a short attention span in some aspects of my life. ;-)

3:35 PM
morning people
seems like I caught a cold :/

@GrayCygnus Bummer

It was bound to happen. I usually never catch colds. But almost 50% of the people in my office have it

3:56 PM
For the future...hand sanitizer. Use it religiously. So much crud is passed via doorknobs.

I use hand sanitizer religiously
Not because I dislike germs, but because I don't want to be a disease vector

@Magisch same

I should but don't. I'm quite the hypocrite apparently. :)

We have several immunocompromised people in the office
What is a nasty cold for me could be deadly for my coworkers

yeah, hand sanitizer should help

4:21 PM
@MisterPositive Just let it go. Many of us have downvote stalkers here.
I got my downvote stalker around the time my reputation crossed 12k. It annoyed me for a bit, but I got over it. Having your personal downvote stalker is a matter of pride, not something to get annoyed about.

@MaskedMan I already forgot about that. ;-)

@MisterPositive But I saw your message just now. Besides, your "about me" strongly suggests that it bothers you more than that. ;-)

You know @MaskedMan I need to update my profile don't I?

@MisterPositive Hmm, so what's it going to be: proud to have my personal downvote stalker? :)

@MaskedMan there we go, updated to show my personal growth.
@MaskedMan Its even better than that.

4:30 PM
@MisterPositive agree, it is a lot better.

@MaskedMan See I do evolve....slowly I will admit

Uhm, so I have View Close Votes and lower privileges on IPS.SE, thanks to Association Bonus and a grand total of 1 question I asked there. All Hail HNQ.

4:38 PM
Bet you got some quality content there
I wrote my first answer yesterday in Sci-Fi and Fantasy SE and got 12 votes already :) thanks HNQ again

@GrayCygnus This is all of my "quality" contribution there. ;-)

Q: How to avoid "who are you?" as a response to "how are you?"

Masked ManLast week, I got a phone call from an unknown number, and the conversation went this way: Her : How are you? Me  : Who are you? To put things in context, she turned out to be an old friend. She apparently assumed that I would have her number saved in my phone and/or would recognize her vo...

Not no mention the 5 straight days I rep capped on TWP, thanks to a HNQ answer and question I posted

I started that question as more of a joke in response to another HNQ there.

@GrayCygnus Uhm, I just read replaced "whistle" with "fart" in this question. It was hilarious. Try it. ;)
6
Q: Is it okay to whistle while at the office?

CharlesI enjoy whistling from time to time, and like to think that I'm pretty good at it; i.e., it's not displeasing to listen to, unless you just don't like whistling. And, if need be, I can whistle at a pretty low volume - somewhere between that of a whisper and a casual conversation. Being in a cubi...

Actually it is even better if you read the comments and answers in a similar way.

4:49 PM
LOL, I also enjoy making up captions to conversations I see people having on the distance. "Yo look at that gurl man" - 'dayum man its lit" ... when they are probably discussing about what is for dinner

I especially like the "remixed" version of the downvoted answer. "Don't fart in public unless asked." George Washington said so in his teens!
The accepted answer has "you might occasionally get away with it in the toilet" :)

5:11 PM
@MaskedMan @GrayCygnus This should be the answer "You could buy those little snap fireworks and throw it just inside the stall door, gaurantee he responds if not deaf. "
@JoeStrazzere Congrats on 190K!

There is literally nothing in this question about company-specific regs, agreements or policies. OP didn't ask "do I owe it" or "how much do I owe" but is asking a very answerable on-topic question about figuring taxes. Taxes aren't company specific, last I checked. Voting to reopen. — Christopher Estep 26 mins ago

I wish there was a way to award reputation to all the hilarious comments that he makes. :)
Good answer. Imagine if everyone did "their thing" because they all felt it was "not displeasing". You'd soon have a cacophony of whistling, humming, singing, pencil drumming, yodeling, finger snapping, bird calls, hand clapping - yikes! — Joe Strazzere 7 hours ago
I just imagined a scene like that at my workplace, and realized that it is not a lot different from reality. :P

@ChristopherEstep Re-Open vote cast....

pew pew

shots fired

5:19 PM
@MisterPositive Or ... as someone suggested, be loud enough to be heard "I AM GOING TO SH** ON THIS STALL, I HOPE NO ONE FORGOT TO LOCK THE DOOR... HERE I COMEEEE"

(it's reopened now)

@ChristopherEstep I honestly have no idea why that one would be closed. Its on even in the line to the closed question park.
@enderland is there a badge for closing the most questions?

knee-jerk closing. It'd be interesting how many q's would be closed if the queue didn't show the reasons for the existing votes.

@ChristopherEstep Hmm, @enderland cast the binding reopen vote few seconds before I could cast the 4th reopen vote, so to "compensate" for it, I edited the post to make the title somewhat more descriptive.

@MisterPositive idk but if so I could easily win. "close. reopen. close. reopen." repeat. :D

5:25 PM
I've close reviewed the most. :) not actually closed the most though. Just my badge at 1000

I may have that one too...
1000 one

"Why the downvotes?" "Here's why." "You're wrong!" Further explanation" "What are you talking about?" "I'm not going to argue" "I'm not arguing"
It's like talking to my 10 year old.

@ChristopherEstep Who me? I can be at times.

No, this Q.

Q: Should I hide the fact that I was just sick?

CharlesI just recovered from strep throat, and today is my first day back at work. Since I've been absent half the week, a few coworkers have already asked where I've been during my absence, and I anticipate even more will ask. Should I be completely honest with them, and mention that I've been sick f...

oh.
Yep, that question got a sarcastic comment a and VTC from me.

5:36 PM
discussions like that is why I usually don't explain downvotes.

@ChristopherEstep people wonder why people don't like downvoting... it's even worse on SO than here imo

SO is downright toxic. I think that stems from most tech people being user-hostile.

I don't mind explaining. I explain and then become unresponsive ( usually )
On StackExchange it is toxic IMHO.

@ChristopherEstep I think it's more that people ask really dumb questions there or basic questions

@enderland +1

5:39 PM
lol, that too.

@ChristopherEstep I stopped actively contributing to SO about 4 years ago for exactly that reason. They have a bit of mafia culture there, which usually manifests in one bully trusted user mocking a newbie, and then the other patting the trusted user's back with more rude and insulting comments.

They need to follow the philosophy of WWSD

By contrast, I think we do a lot better here, although there is still a lot of scope for improvement.
I have been actively trying to be more welcoming of new users here, but I still make mistakes quite often.

@MaskedMan @ChristopherEstep StackOverflow is the once I meant. I do not contribute much there either anymore. I do still use it on occasion when I get stuck.

Hey, @enderland how come we don't have the "leave a comment" dialog on downvotes, or is that just for noobs?
(WWSD = What Would [Jon] Skeet Do) :)

5:45 PM
@ChristopherEstep It is shown only to below 2k users.

A: Encouraging people to explain downvotes

Jeff AtwoodThe comments are there for people who want to explain their downvotes. The only thing I can think of is an AJAX <div> reminder for users when they cast downvotes: Please consider adding a comment if you think this post can be improved. After the first downvote, we can't say we didn't rem...

In a strange sort of way, I actually feel happy when sparks fly between the high reputation users here. I have also noticed that it is never the same group against the same group every time. It kind of guards against groupthink when we actively question each other instead of patting each other's backs.
As long as our close-reopen tennis matches don't descend into boxing matches, we should be fine. ;)

@MaskedMan Schadenfraude

@enderland When you flag something and the response is "Disputed", what does that mean exactly? Disputed by whom?

@MisterPositive the review I think, I'm not sure. comment flags are a whole ball of confusion though so I'm not sure on those

Oh, the review queue disagreed with me. Got it.

I think that "disputed" is always a system generated thing and "declined" is a manual one. though there might be edge cases there I'm unaware of
VLQ or NAA get disputed a fair bit, if only from edits (a post you flag NAA that gets edited and reviewed as "fine" still disputes that flag annoyingly)

5:56 PM
I see
@enderland thank you mister moderator sir

I have a question. If you have an A.S. degree and are going for a B.S., how do I list it on a resume? Leaving off the A.S. means I could be just starting the Bachelor's. Including only the A.S. means I'm not pursuing a bachelor's.
I can make that an actual question if that's appropriate for workplace SE, but I wasn't sure if it belongs here or on academia. It kind of touches both academic and work topics.

@Anon234_4521 I would try it here on the workplace, but it might get closed as opinion based.

Oh, that's a good point. I'm really looking for any opinion at all; I'm rather torn. I currently list both A.S. on one line and pursuing the B.S. on the other.

I would just list pursuing the B.S. and leave it at that.... ( see, my opinion ) @Anon234_4521

Then, in accordance with my previous statement, I shall take your advice. Thanks

Kaz
6:04 PM
The A.S. is a separate degree in its' own right. That it *usually* is used as a transfer into a full Bsc is beside the point.

I would put something like:

B.S. [Subject] - [University] - [Current Grade, if relevant] - Started [Date] - Expected to graduate [Date]
A.S. [Subject] - [University] - [Grade] - Graduated [Date]
Modify as appropriate.

@ChristopherEstep Not really, quite often I am one of the people involved in the fight. :P

Q: If a flagged post is edited before a moderator sees the flag, how do they deal with it?

Masked ManI flagged this answer as "not an answer". The initial version I flagged was: Unfortunately your company has the expectation on you because you are employed. If you are not able to meet the deadlines, you are not qualified for your job. That's the whole point for probation. Your company h...

Although not obvious from the title, the answer from @Lilienthal covers it.

A: What is a disputed flag?

Tim StoneA disputed flag is whenever your flag was dismissed as neither helpful nor declined, or someone reviewed your flag but no conclusive action was taken. This is intended for use in cases where the validity of a flag is ambiguous. Currently, the following scenarios result in a flag being disputed:...

Hey guys, I have a question for you
I have noticed inconsistencies in the tag badge counter of my profile. However, it appears to be inconsistent only on the tags in TWP, my counters on Stack Overflow have the correct ammounts, but on TWP some tags I have less score than I should.
Is this something I should ask in TWP meta or directly on Meta SE?

Q: Inconsistencies on Tage Badge Counter on some Network Profiles

GrayCygnusI have noticed some inconsistencies on the score I have on several tags in my account on The Workplace. For example: However, the net vote count (as DVs count against you in the counts) I have on those those tags are 106, 103, and 53, respectively. This I can see by clicking on those tags and ...

Looking for some advice: How do I say, in my CV: "Became managerially responsible for somebody else's workload, but was not their manager, per se.

hmmm

Kaz
You can also reframe it as "This guy was hired specifically for me to delegate to".

Maybe it is better to say those things during an interview
as it is not a position per se
mmmm

Kaz
@GrayCygnus Well yes, but I've got to put something on my CV about it. It's a pretty major increase in responsibility.

ok, so you have this guy/gal that you can delegate things to, but you are both under the management of your boss?
in other words, can you fire that guy/gal?

Kaz
11:11 PM
@GrayCygnus God no. Much more of a Senior Analyst/Junior Analyst type of situation.
But without any convenient Job Title promotions to demarcate it.

lol, seems it was convenient for the company ;)
maybe you can put it something like:

Kaz
@GrayCygnus Well, I've never had an official job title ^^

"Supervised the work of other X coworkers"

Kaz
I just change my email signature whenever I feel like my role's changed sufficiently, and wait to see if I get any pushback about it.

Or maybe phrase it so it sounds like a team
"In charge of a team of developers ..."
ooooor
Lead Developer/watever, as the word Lead tends to suggest that you were somewhat guiding and orchestrating your delegates

Kaz
11:14 PM
The entire company is 20 people, we barely have departments, let alone teams ^^

Well, seems to me that if you are delegating tasks to someone you are in a team :)
So, the words that may be useful to you are: Lead, in charge of, supervised...

Kaz
Supervise is a good word.
I think that strikes the right kind of tone.

:) great
are you searching for a new job? or just updating CV so you dont have to update may things after?

Kaz
@GrayCygnus I like to keep it updated anyway. This isn't quite "I want to leave my job" but it is "I want to get a comprehensive picture of the market that exists for my skills"

11:31 PM
see you tomorrow guys (or in a few hours)
