General service announcement: the bounty from the user posting bounties across the network has been removed because he's on a network-wide suspension and would be unable to actually award it. His suspension was unrelated to the bounties.

7:15 AM
I can't think what I could do to earn myself a network ban, I think I'm just too nice for that kind of thing.

7:49 AM
Morning everyone.

8:07 AM
@Pete You could certainly offer your association bonus as bounty on 50+ sites. Choose questions that are at least 3 years old with a score of -5 or lower. That should put you on the right track.

8:29 AM
And change my screen name it 'StackExchange Sucks Ass' while I'm at it...?

8:43 AM
@DavidK you have it backwards, I think. Advice to start with chat doesn't really make sense. You're right that this time I've got this thoroughly covered and discussed in chat but this was only because it started at meta. I already told you that my prior attempts to start from chat were proven useless (I gave 3 examples but there may be more, I only picked what was easy to find). If I learned anything it's that the working way to get things done in chat is to start with meta

8:55 AM
@GrayCygnus God no. I just ran it through a generator out of curiosity, and to get a feel for what I'm emphasising as an overall impression.

9:20 AM
I wonder what would happen if I ran that generator on my corporate PST file.

Oh boy, this OP is in for a rude awakening:

Q: I have a good CV, what now?

Mark RPI spent some years obtaining a good CV. Finishing bachelor wihtout ever failing a subject, good grades, going international (I'm European) to obtain a good master degree and international experience, internships, laguanges... That ends up now having a pretty decent CV, not a one in a thousand, b...

10:19 AM
@Pete That will help too. :)
@Kaz I was wondering who Michael Armstrong is.

@Lilienthal it's unsurprising the education system doesn't tell you how little your degree will mean, but quite hard on some folks when they find out.

11:00 AM
@Erik Yeah I have to agree. It's "follow your interests" and "chase your dreams" from kindergarten all the way through college and then you graduate and suddenly the real world hits you like a ton of bricks. It's particularly perverse in the US considering the debt people amass but every country seems to be failing to properly prepare young adults for the realities of the workplace and everything that involves.
Actually perhaps I should consider the Asian countries an exception but I doubt I'd have preferred that system growing up and certainly not some of their working conditions.

I don't even think "follow your interests" is the worst of it. The biggest problem I've seen is people who think that good grades matter for anything. What matters is what to grades represent, which is skill and ability. Which you can also get in many ways that won't reflect on your grades, but will be seen by employers. And you can get good grades without actually learning the skills.
Too much interest in the symbols and too little in what they actually mean. Or are supposed to mean.

Kaz
11:17 AM
@Erik The way I like to think of it goes like this: Your job is to be useful. More directly, your job is to make your boss's life easier.
Everything else is just abstractions.

Hm, I don't necessarily mean to make my boss's life easier. I often make his life very hard :)
I generally seek to make the company or product more successful. That usually involves a lot of hard choices and such.

2 hours later…
1:31 PM
@MaskedMan Except Lilienthal said that the suspension had nothing to do with the bounties.

Hi guys
I was thinking what is the best way of knowing a company culture?

1:49 PM
Talk to people who work there
or have in the recent past

2:10 PM
or with time you will find out.
Speaking of cultures, why women can wear anything and Men cannot.

bear in mind that in larger companies (I work at a Fortune 10) the culture can vary quite a bit from one department to another.

I use to wear red trainers and HR had issue

women can wear red trainers?

in my old company, while some lady was wearing very deep neck
and did always
no one had problem with it
like wtf

@Kaz On useful work, have you ever read anything by David Graeber? He's famous for an article titled 'Bullshit Jobs'

2:14 PM
in my opinion, to pretend men and women are the same in a culture is stupid. A woman wearing a plunging neckline can look good (depending on how far it goes). A man wears one and he looks like a porn star.

ROFLOL
It was too provoking
but yet It was in my firing notice
one point
I wore bright colours
what could I do, If nike had red in that only
so yea ur right
to pretend men and women are the same in a culture is stupid

About levelling things out in dress codes, I'd like to see codes relaxed for men, rather than made stricter for women
The company I work for has a casual day every Friday, and it's a very different atmosphere

@ChristopherEstep Here you go: Suspiciously Specific Denial :P

in my building, the culture is business casual except for only about one guy who always wears a tie. as an aside, he looks exactly like the old man in Home Alone.

2:20 PM
Funny the document exclude they

@ChristopherEstep That aside, I only said that doing that would put him on the right track. It is upto him to take it forward from there by trolling and causing other kinds of nuisance. ;)

@MaskedMan To the man with a hammer, everything loks like a nail. I swear, everything is supposedly a trope these days.
though that's more a general complaint than directed at you specifically.

@ChristopherEstep You mean this? When All You Have Is A Hammer :)

@Nofel Sounds like they wanted to get rid of you and needed an excuse to build a case

exactly. That's not a trope. It's a metaphor.

2:23 PM
@DavidK true and I am worried about my current employeement too
I got to finish all jira ticket
so no work

I think if I owned that website I'd blow my brains out. It's so banal

@ChristopherEstep I took that as a compliment though, didn't realize it was a complaint. Insult Backfire

they might make me redudant
they all need excuses

I'm sure there's a supposedly a "bitching about tropes" trope.

I don't know, the tropes website may help writers avoid cliches

2:26 PM
@ChristopherEstep I think this should do TVTropes Will Ruin Your Life
Although from my perspective, TVTropes Will Enhance Your Life
@jserv It has been life-changing for me. I suddenly have a greater appreciation for tv shows, movies, and life in general.

Happy to hear it, @MaskedMan

For example, when I am watching a movie, I see what trope each event fits into. Since I have read about that trope in detail, I have a better appreciation for why the author chose to do things in that way.
I see other people complain about why this character did this stupid thing, but I have a better insight into it, and I can enjoy it instead of complaining.
Remember Tropes Are Tools aka Tropes Are Not Bad. :)

So you're more or less seeing it as a form of literary analysis

What are Tropes

Common and oft-used ideas in fiction, I guess, @Nofel

2:36 PM
@Nofel You are standing at a point of no return. Once you find the answer to that question, life will never be the same. Are you sure you want to proceed? ;)

yes Lets see how deep the rabbi holes goes
:)
I am tv addict FYI

@Nofel Well, then this should be a good starting point for you. Lampshade Hanging
Make sure to open links to every other trope in background tabs, and read them in turn. :)

@MaskedMan Cruel suggestion. This advice is for people who want to still be reading it at 1am.

that's better than Factorio..

yea I am unable to finish my book lately
coz of so many things I wanna do all toghter.
CSS, JS and Angular

2:45 PM
@enderland I wonder how much I'd pay to get back the hours of my life I spent playing Minecraft, Theme Hospital, Theme Park, Black and White etc.
A lot of my time has gone into world building computer games

If they could give ROI
we would be rich
I was addicted to lego and yet I am (got my kid first lego, I was more excited them him)
2
and then I would spend hours playing max payne
SWAT
scribble
I want my eye sight 6x6
More than anything

I still build lego kits. The one I have on the go right now is 3500 pieces.

@Pete you buying the new Millennium Falcon?

@Pete What on earth are you building, if you don't mind me asking?

Seriously considering it, yes. Although it's not much bigger than the existing set. probably more detailed. still, it's a big stack of money.

2:50 PM
It just upsetting when someone break ur model

@jserv set #42055 - bucket wheel excavator. Built the 'A' model, now doing the 'B' before I sell it on.

and when ur kid does it, u wanna cry

The pain comes when you find you did the wrong thing deep inside a really complicated section and you have to carefully tear the whole model apart to fix it.

@Pete I've got the Imperial Star Destroyer 10030 I think and have considered selling it in order to buy the Falcon and not feel bad ;)

Terrifying but interesting looking bit of machinery there

2:52 PM
Sweet, that one is worth $2500 and upwards. I was thinking of it myself, but it's a large price to pay for what it really is.

@Pete But that's great for a lot of things, problem solving, manual skill, thinking about how to dismantle and rebuild something methodically
It's like you're a microengineer or micromechanic

I think that many people will buy the UCS Falcon as an investment, but I think it'll be a long time before it really makes money.
I did think about ordering two and putting one into storage for a few years.

Wait, apparently microengineers already exist, and they do things on a molecular level... You guys know what I mean, though.

The best set I've built is the Apollo rocket. it's a real work of love.

@Pete I paid only like $200 for the 10030 model when I bought it in I think 2008?
it's worth quite a bit now :)

2:58 PM
@Pete 2500 for what

@nofel. Go into ebay and search for 'lego 10030' and look at the prices.

oic
its a fleet

Ok, maybe $1000 now. I could swear I was seeing them go for over 2 grand.

600 quid in uk

No, it's just one super star destroyer. there's a little 'normal' star destroyer that goes with it.

3:02 PM
Only problem with little blocks are. my little one is almost 2 yrs
so he might choke on it.
oh wow
people sell it
made

No, they take photos made and then take it apart. some people also sell reproduction models of it far cheaper. or sell the lepin version, which is pretty junk.

It's never occurred to me before now that there would be counterfeit Lego sets

Lepin. Chinese brand that basically copies the original lego but uses cheaper and weaker plastic. And of course, they don't pay licensing fees or reward the original design teams....

I guess that's what a lot of what Chinese industry is about, cheaper reproduction of existing things

China doesn't really have much of a concept of copyright or trademarks. The CEO of a company I used to work for (CDC Software) initially made his money in selling pirated ringtones in China (the CDC stands for China Dot Com).

3:16 PM
Wild West (East?) capitalism

@Pete I can't find that piece on lego site

What piece?

'lego 10030

It was discontinued back in 2009 or so. That's why it's rising in price.
I buy quite a few sets from ebay and sell them on after I've built them. Bit cheaper that way.

I wouldn't know if they are real or not
so better buy from lego

3:23 PM
good morning people
I also love legos :D

You get a feel for whether things are real or not. Photos of the box helps. As always, if something is being sold for too cheap, something's wrong with it.

lego FTW
I swear I was so excited to go in lego shop
with my toddler
like I became busy making model and my son was so excited, he punched it
he is still 18 months old

ever been to Lego Land anyone? Or the one on Downtown Disney, Orlando?

his excitment was so much when I made the model

3:25 PM
I hate my job but like getting paid... how can I not show up for work and still get paid with out being rude or getting in trouble.
2

I have this on my desk right now.... :D

@Pete Is that a weapon in your workplace?
@GrayCygnus I have been to the one in downtown disney

It is, yes. I have already shot my team leader with it.
2

@Pete Since its a storm trooper i assume you missed

Death Troopers never miss....!

3:35 PM
Well, I don't have legos on my desk ... but I have these cool dinosaur plant holders!

oh its plant holder
I was thinking, why is a cactus doing on a dino
:D
Oh Man, I hate myself
Everytime TL ask, how is it going
I tell him exact figures
of how many are remaining

3:54 PM
@Nofel Next time he asks, say "great"
chirp....

Grr 5 days away was not enough... I need to get myself banned from SE

@IDrinkandIKnowThings LOL
I would like to see a Close reason added.
the category would be "Stupid question"

@MisterPositive We used to have Not a Real Question which was basically that. I really miss NARQ Close reason

@IDrinkandIKnowThings Being an entitled special snowflake and getting fake offended is the way to go.

@IDrinkandIKnowThings Wonder why it left. It is applicable sometimes.
@MaskedMan LMAO

4:08 PM
@MisterPositive The "Be Nice" policy...

@IDrinkandIKnowThings I see. So "Stupid Question won't work", but what is wrong with "Not a real question"?

Q: Help us make "Not Constructive" and "Not a Real Question" closures more effective

JaydlesIn the recent off-topic discussion, Pekka 웃 suggested that other close reasons could be further broken out as well . We've got some more specific ideas along those lines, and we want your input and suggestions. Get comfy; this one's long. Goals for "Not a Real Question" and "Not Constructive" ...

@IDrinkandIKnowThings Thanks for sharing that

Q: Are all stormtroopers as poor soldiers as the ones in the movies?

RyanIn the Star Wars films we consistently witness just how poor soldiers stormtroopers are. They show very sub-par marksmanship, crappy house searching tactics, and are easily fooled and defeated by Ewoks and Rebels. That being said, I remember reading a character guide that defined stormtroopers ...

@enderland Wow

Hello
as some of you migth know, I was changing job. I am working 3 days already
I noticed that people are very relaxed and they use vulgar language
I should have been used, because when I was in school there was lot of this languege also
but I do not get, why I do not get used and get stressed
I feel like if I use this languege, I might use it in wrong way
non funny way
and proabaly thats why it gets me stressed
they use words like "suck my dick"
to each other and similar
they do not use those at me yet
but I want to fit in the team
and I have know how to manage this
and be relaxed
any advice
?

@Will_create_nick_later Do you want to use such language at work?

@Will_create_nick_later Remember they are just words, what is important is their meaning.

5:03 PM
@MaskedMan - do not know. But if they talk to me like this , then maybe I need
@MisterPositive - yea, I am sure they are not literally asking to do that thing :D
oh , I rememebr from the childhood
how could say funny answer to the "suck my dick"
my friend said this to one guy
and that guy said - move down your pants (not sure how to say it in english right)
and my friend said it was just a joke , did not knew what to say back :D

As one grows up, that foul language is better not to use in professional situations. Maybe after office would seem less stressful to you
(Shit, can't believe I said that bullshit, damn) lol

yea
probably they are very good friends
probably they do not use this language with anyone
but between themselves they do
good that my father does not work in same company and team, it would be shame for me to hear those words together with father :D

5:40 PM
The thing is, the suck my d*ck is sexual harassment, if someone chooses to make a complaint. They're stupid for allowing it.
2

so I could say back - you are sexually harrasing me, I will write a complaint :D
probably if I say it in right tone, that could be funny
nobody would ever think that in reality this is sexual harasement
there should be maybe guy and girl alone
then girl maybe could consider this as sexual haresement
but to girls nobody says this anyway

If the girl says that to the guy, is it still sexual harassment? :o

@MaskedMan yes it is. Unless you put double standards into the equation

You also don't know if the guy is gay or bi which makes it even riskier.
As a person of strong generally conservative faith, someone like me could also claim it creates a hostile work environment (though I personally would never make that complaint. I'm too libertarian for that)

5:53 PM
I think you make that complaint, you simply not fit in the team
and you neeed to get out of that team
hmm, ok maybe if you want somebody complain about you
and you have power
then maybe its ok to stay in the team

I agree. But not everyone thinks that way.

but I would feel not relaxed if I am one how is making my own rules
and team would hate me
but I have a friend who does not care what team in new job says
he is a boss
and he got new job
and his team said to him - bosses used to sit in another cabinet
but he sits in same cabinet as team
I do not get how is he relaxed when they do not want him to sit with them
maybe its because he is boss

For instance, I'm Mormon. If my boss started talking about how awful Mormons are (and couldn't take a hint to stop), I'd leave. I may or may not say why. He's free to hate anyone he wants and I'm free to work somewhere else.

thats different story
this would be hate for real
not in funny way
they also first day say some jokes about jews
then they asked me - can they talk that way about jews
with me
they did not want probably to insult me in case I have jew relatives or so
but its just fun to talk about another religions, nationalities

The thing is, when you're a member of a class or group and people make jokes about it, it's not funny at all. I honestly wouldn't work with someone who did that. Jew jokes as well.
Were I in your position (and I'm not suggesting this, just saying how I am) I would look for a new job at this point and do it quietly. When I found it, I'd leave and say "I just don't feel I fit in to the culture here"
I guess I expect a certainly level of professionalism but that's just me.

6:09 PM
for me so far this job looks very good, relaxed people
I had lot of jobs where I was annoyed
I am fed up
and my couple of team members do not use those words (they are in different country, maybe I just do not hear, but I would not be surprised).
I feel like easy talking with my project team members
so thats why I do not want to change
at least until I see some problems
and salary is super good

@IDrinkandIKnowThings This is hilarious. there is a contingent that believe "I dont know the answer" = "Off Topic"

@MisterPositive no it irratates the hell out of me... ohh ok I can see how that part would be hilarious but not the fact that its a real thing.

@IDrinkandIKnowThings I see. I don't like it either. There are plenty of things I don't know. And boy do I mean plenty...

They are mostly the same people that post 1 line answers and rep whore in general...

my pet peeve is closing questions because someone asks a general legal question which any HR pro would know.

6:21 PM
@ChristopherEstep I used to do that before I was educated by some of the elders of this site.

"I told my coworker she had nice boobs, can I get fired?" ERMAGERD! Legal question! close it!!!

Yeah there is a difference between asking how the law applies to your specific situation and what the law is.
what the law is we can help with

agreed
And some questions, while asking about the law, are so general that they can be answered, like the example I gave.

its never can i get fired. its whats going to happen to me, or will they fire me.

The thing that most people don't realize is that nothing on this site, no matter how specific, constitutes "legal advice". It is, by definition, legal information. Two very different things.

6:24 PM
Can I get fired we can help with... thats a factual question. Will I requires prognostication and guesswork... that we cant help with

which gets back to the fact that almost every question is opinion based anyway. :) The level which is too much is subjective.
2

@ChristopherEstep If you tell someone that they can do something it is legal to do it, and you are wrong it can be problematic. SE has said no doing that because they do not want the hassle of providing evidence and chain of custody info to court cases.
So SE has said NO LEGAL ADVICE

The only way it's legal advice is if you represent yourself as an attorney.
Legal advice is not "advice about the law" it's "advice from a lawyer" Big difference.
Only an attorney can give legal advice. Everything else is legal information, regardless of what SE says. Essentially, SE policy is "No legal information that pertains to a specific person or case" even though they call it advice.
and that's a wise policy
Because there are idiots who will treat it like legal advice and do things that they were told to do on some web site. Which is baaaad, mmmmkay?

6:43 PM
I wonder if people read the other answer before typing theirs?
( head banging on keyboard )

2 hours later…
8:35 PM
@ChristopherEstep Well SE has said no offering legal advice on SE because they do not want the headaches of dealing with it. So we deal with the SE policy wether we like it or not.
@MisterPositive Why would they read the wrong answers posted by other people when they know the right answer....

Q: When there are many answers already, help me check that mine won't repeat others

gnatWhen posting my answer I check that it doesn't repeat others as required by our FAQ. In current UI, this becomes difficult when question already has many answers. I would want that questions with 10 or more answers (including deleted ones) have additional UI allowing me to review each of previo...

I have a hard time feeling bad for people on the workplace who get downvoted for that since they are forced to click through a dialog if there are more than iirc 2 answers

9:17 PM
Hey @IDrinkandIKnowThings saw your comment on my answer to that hnq discussed in meta. What do you mean by hat tip? (My main language is not English) Do you mean the '@' that is in my answer?

@GrayCygnus "I like Kilsi's answer" is a hat tip

Ok, I see
Is it harmful in some way I am unaware of?
(Promoting that one liner answer?)

In the way that it encourages non answer opinion sharing as an answer - yes it is harmful IMO
Many people will only read the first few lines of an answer... you spend that hat tipping an answer that is nothing compared to the quality answer you provide

I see now
It is somewhat distracting to the rest of my answer then

9:21 PM
I've never heard "hat tip" before, either :|

I decided to add it, in first place, as Kilsi answered 2 seconds before I did (literally). So I added that "hat tip" to, I dont know, "respect" that kilsi answered first (even though it was really close)

Got a question for the community. Wanted to pass it by the cooler before I post. I'm receiving simple Microsoft VBA tasks from a coworker that can be easily resolved via a few lines of code. Should I give the coworker what he/she wants so he/she is satisfied for a day, or should I teach him/her so she is satisfied for life?

Now you put it that way, you are right that it distracts to the rest of answer... editing to remove it
@FrankFYC Are these tasks you are paid to do?
or are you helping your coworker out

@GrayCygnus It is during company time.

@IDrinkandIKnowThings by editing I will pop the question to top page again right? ...

9:24 PM
@GrayCygnus Yeah but thats going to happen a few dozen times more anyway

@FrankFYC Ok, but were you hired to work with VBA? Or part of your job is to assist coworkers with their tasks?

@GrayCygnus Respect is exactly what a hat tip means

@IDrinkandIKnowThings yeah... going for the edit
done

(in online contexts) used as an acknowledgement that someone has brought a piece of information to the writer's attention, or provided the inspiration for a piece of writing.
"hat tip to Chris Johnson, who alerted me to the story"
Straight from The Google

@FrankFYC For one favor your coworker asks is ok, but if it starts recurring, you would be better "teaching him/her how to fish" :)

9:28 PM
@GrayCygnus I got 'assigned' into a side project that has mainly administrative tasks. I am familiar enough with VBA to figure it out, but I want to consider nipping future requests

@IDrinkandIKnowThings something like that "Kudos" thing?

@GrayCygnus
Yeah, I can teach, but it is hard to teach established coworkers who are set in their ways.
Thanks.

Kudos is more something that helped you, a hat tip is more of showing respect but not actually crediting them with any help

NP @FrankFYC let us know if you post your question

If you ask it do not ask it as a decision to make. Ask how to do what ever you decide.

9:30 PM
you won't be able to teach someone to program on the side, too

I personally would look into the process that your company has for creating those sorts of things. You could actually be creating rogue software that is the bane of your Developers

@IDrinkandIKnowThings good observation, "should I ..?" questions are to be avoided

@GrayCygnus For now I'll leave it as-is, if it becomes recurring as you state, i'll post it QA style.

ok, good luck teaching then, it is the best way to learn ;)
lol :)

11:49 PM
Interesting
1) By the way you are describing it yes (although you probably mean one-dimensional: the sharer-hoarder axis). 2) Too broad maybe, or at least to describe in this comment 3) This I feel you already provided yourself with a solution, and that is to do 2) (encourage one or another until the organization transitions. Also, to hire more Sharer or Hoarder employees, depending what mechanism is desired.
umm ... @FrankFYC why did you erase your comment? It is the second time you do that
See you tomorrow/in some hours guys
