@RichardU am I mising a joke? He was initially elected.

2 hours later…
8:04 AM
Morning guys.

Kaz
@Nofel Morning

Hey Kaz. How r u doing
Just had a day off and got a email from my manager, ranting about how my work always breaks when he take my changes and stuff
should I email and remind him, last time it wasn't working, he was the one who said sorry to me after realizing it was his fault
and I think today as well.
before leaving and taking a day off
I knew, there would be a rant email.
I got to wonder, how one can become a manager
why can't I
Friday Trivia: Why can't I become manager whereas I got more skills

8:19 AM
I don't know what skills you have, but management skills are generally unrelated to non-management skills

Yes, I know that
I guess in management skill, a good estimate of time count and risk assesment
and yes it checks out
my manager was wrong about email
again his fault

8:45 AM
Is not replying to email the best answer
as he realized it was his mistake as last time

In general, if this is your day off, don't reply to email

Yesterday was my day off

In that case, you'd better reply if the email is asking anything of you.

As expected, I had the email about rant
I sorted him out coz I knew It was his mistake
How can i email and tell him as well that he need to take changes in
like he said to me and i quote
"Since taking your changes, the xyz is really messed up, certainly on Desktop. You need to work on why so may times when you check in changes the system gets broken"

Do you have a build system? You should be able to see which merge actually broke the system.

8:54 AM
It didn't broke the system
he didn't took my all changes
as he is preaching me

He did a partial merge of your code?

selected files only
whereas he recommends me doing whole check out

Do you guys have Pull Requests?

no
SVN sucks
I am not familiar with svn expect check in and out or little tiny history features

Ok. Then I'd just send an email saying "You didn't check out all of my changes. Please also check out files A, B, C to completely merge the feature."
And getting familiar with the features of your source control sounds like a good plan. It helps show a LOT of what is going on with the whole project

9:00 AM
Yep especially in a environment as such as me.

@Nofel Erik nailed it... managment skills are NOT the same as the skills needed to do the job of the people you manage. I've literally never had a manager with better technical skills than me and the best managers I've ever had couldn't have coded "Hello World" in BASIC

I've found it helpful in all environments

He is a stanage person. Was telling me I got paracetamol and other pain killers, when I said I lost my 2 tablet for my headache
he said u wanna complete ur medication
like he mentioned to use tisue when sneeze
stranger
attitude

@RichardU you might be on to something regarding cranky old man posts being popular. I bashed out a short, borderline grumpy answer yesterday - it gained 12 up votes, a comment praising it for being "short and to the point", and was the top answer by 9 votes before the topic was marked as a dupe.
@Nofel completing a course of medication - good advice
tissue when sneezing - good advice

Of course I know

9:09 AM
it does sound like he's crossing professional boundaries a bit but perhaps there is a touch of oversharing going on as well

But He make it sound like I am dumb
or sneezing on his face
just like his email make me sound dumb
but turn out he was for not seeing the work i did

@Nofel honestly I think you need to stop taking everything this guy says to heart quite so much. He's shown himself to be a bit of a oddball and probably Not A Nice Person. You're unlikely to ever be able to change this about him so I wouldn't waste any more emotional energy on him and his comments then you need to

@motosubatsu yes you are right. I knew today was coming but I knew I was right and I was. I decided to look forward
give my best and let my work make noise
Like today
Coming from u all guys have help me
hence I share

@Nofel happy to help :)

Q: Restricted control over company's laptop

user74326I have been recently hired as a security engineer on a company. They provided me a MacBook Pro as a company laptop. As I always do in any computer in my possession - including in previous jobs - I rebooted in order to reinstall the operating system. I consider it to be good hygiene, since I don'...

must...control...fist..of..death!

Still haven't able to email him about how I got fungal infection from him workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/94857/…

9:27 AM
nope, I can't do it - any attempt I make to write an answer to that "restricted control over company's laptop" question just turns into a rant that fails the Be Nice test not just by a country mile but by a country f##king marathon
can someone get me some valium stat? or a very large shot of whiskey? I'm clearly on a grumpy one this morning!

@motosubatsu escpresso short

@motosubatsu why?

@Magisch because he's coming across as being a pretty crap "security engineer" and is trying to dress up what is basically a sulky tantrum as a WP question

I mean sure
but why specifically this one
there's at least 3 sulky tantrums a day on here

@Nofel nah I'm trying to cut down on my caffiene

9:34 AM
I found that cutting caffeine from my diet makes me less tired
no joke

@Magisch comination of the fact that I've done a fair bit of security work myself over the years so it's a topic that's important to me and I'm in a fair bit of pain today - that combo makes me a cranky-pants
@Magicsh re: caffiene yeah pretty much - caffiene is only really useful as a stimulant in appropriate moderation and usually in short term situations. Caffiene and I have had a weird kind of love-hate relationship for decades

The best way to be consistently awake for work is pretty boring
regular bed times, not too much processed sugar, no caffeine
I can't stress how important regular bedtimes are

@Magisch preaching to the choir there.. regular bed/rising times are a critical component of good sleep hygene

Not even that
I swear if I go to bed every day at 22:00 I'm wide awake
do 19:00 one day and 2:00 the other day and you'll feel like shit both days
It's counterintuitive that going to bed early can make you more tired but it's true

yep.. because you are preventing your brain and body from knowing WHEN it's supposed to be awake
and that just leads to feeling crappy and groggy

9:40 AM
It sounds like such a silly trick but it's been working absolutely great for more then a year for me

Kaz
I have a simple rule with caffeine: Nothing after 11am.
It's got a half-life of 6 hours in the bloodstream.

@Kaz my rule used to be nothing after 3pm but I've changed it now that I have basically my morning jump start around 6am and then... nothing

I lost my mojo with caffenie, people drink to say awake but i cant

Kaz
@Nofel Important thing to know about caffeine: It gets less effective the tireder you are.
Hence using it to stay awake generally does not end well.

10:11 AM
I know one thing, I sleep more better then
:D
So I gave up as a way to keep me awake
Funny, when I switch to learn something I am yawning
but when seeing a mvoie
It goes away
I tested it and was amazed how our system work

@Kaz that makes sense... several times I've been super tired and had an espresso and promptly fallen asleep and had a nice nap
but I find that one right after lunch usually perks me up and makes me more productive in the afternoon

Kaz
@LangeHaare This is why I have mine first thing in the morning. It kicks my brain into high gear, I spend the morning working on my most important stuff and then I've got the afternoon/evening for it to wear off and to wind down.

Today I had while coming to work
and I told myself no pvt email until lunch
no phone picking until lunch
and no getting sad over my manager pulling me down
and bam
half day almosgt here and I am a rockstar
Coffee teaches ur brain good things

@motosubatsu you should see some of the answers I never published. At times, I think I'm one lab accident away from turning into a super villain.
@Erik Re: Hitler. He was appointed Chancellor by Hindenburg, we was never elected.
Lots of close votes today.

Hello, Does the following template sounds good and not a rant
Hello,
I think you forgot to take all the changes, so when you took xx it was working. Also, I would like to mention that as front end CSS/JS and User Interface are my responsibilities, It is better to keep me in the loop. I saw changes which I wasn’t happy about and were made part of design without letting me know or asking me such as the “xx” xx Icon next to xx, which is x(totally out of our colour scheme) and on xx page (another x icon), which is not part of design, We have a set of Icons and Colour Schemes. I think if discussed with me prior to applying something that isnt part of Desig
Sorry to ask for u guys, I am not native english speaker
and dont want to sound pushy and mean
yet ponting out my reservation

12:41 PM
@Nofel if this is to your manager I definitely wouldn't send that as is
pretty much the whole e-mail reads as if it were written by a tetchy manager who is remonstrating with a wayward subordinate

this is such bullshit

@Magisch ?

got a antibiotic resistant nerve infection from a wasp sting

@Magisch OUCH
that royally sucks
have they given you any treatment plan?

Yeah broad spectrum antibiotics in hopes that something will kill it

12:55 PM
@Magisch spray and pray :(
never a great thing to hear but supposedly it can be quite effective. hold on tight though because chances of getting one or more of the side affects is going to be pretty high :(

my immune system is already shot so I'll take my chances with the antibiotics

@Magisch why u taking antibiotics for

nerve infection

@motosubatsu so how should I rephrase it

basicly I got stung by a wasp near my left arm nerves and it got infected

1:05 PM
@Nofel I'm not trying to be an arse here but honestly the whole thing is pretty terrible... might be better if you try and explain what you are trying to achieve and see if we can get something workable

1:18 PM
@Magisch sounds bad. When It stung me once I was in shower, Came out half naked in pain
@motosubatsu I wanna tell him, It was him missing the file and as a front end developer It is my job to make everything look seemlessly and would appreciate if ABC added should be discussed with me
@Magisch just a sidenote, when a wasp stung, It is said in my culture to instantly pull out the thingy and rub onion on it
That causes the burning to go away.

@Nofel the problem is that fundamentally you want to rant, now I'm not saying you aren't justified in wanting to rant. In fact it sounds like you are, it's just that ranting to your boss, especially about something they did is generally a really bad idea
Give me a few mins and I'll see if I can word something a little less ranty

I know he has upper hand but he is being misguided by other dev, who created a issue, I told manager to fix it, he was told and he put the blame on me saying nothing was wrong
just like I told in email that front end is my domain, leave it to me or atleast ask and tell
Communicate, Yrs in office than other who are less in yrs spend in office a
aren't to be draggged.

2:11 PM
@Nofel vent here if you have to, but not at workl

hahah you guys will be tired of me
:D
Just had a message from my colleage when asked if he fixed the problem he created
as in
have those issues been fixed
and he replied saying he is busy with other stuff
wow hostile
I told it to PM
wow, he just told PM there wasnt any issue
big issue
and didnt told him he wrote it
insead he saifd no email
whereas he told it is just small issues
wow, I need to change jobs

2:34 PM
@motosubatsu Did u come up with something

2:45 PM
@Nofel sorry mate not yet... bit caught up in some time critical stuff at work (we've got a big project moving to UAT on Monday so it's a bit frantic)

Cool
best of luck

Q: How do you shake hands with women at work in France without being rude?

sh5164In most French companies, there is an unspoken rule that you shake hands with men and kiss on the cheek with women. I really don't like that tradition as it seems to me that everyone should be shaking hands in a company Kissing on the cheek feels like sexualizing or considering women as child. ...

@enderland I'm being good, staying out of this one.

oh fun

hahah, Thnak God I am not in france
we 80/20
majority of women
I even shy to make freiends with them
even though some r cool and have like mindeness
In france I would have fainted
:D
Alright, I am outta here, Have a good wekend.
Keep me in the loop

@Nofel I am autistic with sensory issues, I cannot stand to be touched. I'd have a heart attack from the stress if I lived over there
welcome @RobertRodriguez

With me it is about confidence
went to boys only school
shyness has screwed me
no friends, no hangout
tv make me sad, I see people hanging out
coming over

@Nofel with me, every unexpected and/or unwanted touch feels like I am being doused with icewater. it's that much of a shock to me.

3:27 PM
Oh hey @Richard

@Nofel you can change things like that about yourself

I was just curious and looking in

@enderland really want to, sometimes I see a group in my workplace, talking about all my fav shows
and I am like
how to start
better yet, how to befriends
@RichardU What sort of condition is that

Are you pretty young @Nofel ?

3:36 PM
@Nofel Autism

To myslf yes @RobertRodriguez I am 32
I feel so embrassedw when i came from holidays, this girl in office so saw me and cheer out something and iwas happy but didnt know what to do.
after that she dont even say hi
I findmyself dumb

Haha, no I was just wondering because of the making friends part. I guess I think of it as pretty easy at work, right now I just moved out to another city to work remotely and I am having a hard time without the structure to meet people
That sucks man, she may just think that you weren't happy to hear from her so she's trying to not bother you
It's tough when you don't "react right" to situations

and in my last office, this girl was cheering up for winning and I went and hugged her
lol
totaly wierd
@RobertRodriguez yea, I didnt wanted that
she is coolest girl in office
plus she watches all my serials
so wanna know her more
be friends
donno how

Well you could say something after a new episode comes out, just ask her if she liked it

It is awakrd to walk into her room and say that
I need piece by piece
though I heard from my mate
they think I am pretty cool
as i Do Pilates in a mix group at work

3:48 PM
Oh nice, it's cool they have that

Na, We pay out of our pockets
once in a week
I want it everday
I want a office, where you can squats and deadlift
to take out anger

enderland needs to use our gym

1 hour later…
5:19 PM
@enderland Or do it like I do. Climb stairs. I go all the way from basement to the 15th floor in my office, that's about 370 steps. Also drink warm water many times a day, it cuts out my hunger pangs almost entirely. Given the rich variety of food available here in India, it becomes much harder to control food intake, ten times so when I am hungry ... and bored :/ ... which is my usual mood in office these days ... and also an important reason for my steady rise in reputation here ;).

@MaskedMan-仮面の男 we have zero stairs in our office (I used to do this in my old office) :(

@enderland "Is it unprofessional to switch jobs if the office has no stairs?" :P

we have a "stair machine" thing in our gym though :|

My problem with the gym is ... I put on weight when I am bored, but when I go to the gym, I get bored there again, which kinda defeats the purpose.

5:42 PM
@MaskedMan-仮面の男 is it unprofessional to switch jobs because they don't bring you cupcakes on your birthday?
Another reason I am glad I am in the USA is that many other countries have customs where you have to touch people.
I'd rather be hit by a stick.

5:57 PM
heh I had a misspelling in an answer on SO which was years old and like 9k views XD

6:22 PM
@enderland I'm still sore from crawling around on that ship. Someone pass me my Geritol! Forget that, I need DAMITOL

I love WWII era naval history

@enderland My brother served on the USS Missouri. He told me a whole bunch

6:38 PM
I WISH I had this as a "problem" at work.

Q: Dealing with a colleague that talks too much

User632716I have been at my company as a project manager/ analyst for around a year now. I have a colleague (Bob) of the same rank (though with much more experience, having spent considerably longer than me at this particular) with whom I'm having an issue. We are collaborating on a project which is more...

> but as Bob is part of the furniture, he is seen as set in his ways
wut

@enderland it's a very disrespectful way of referring to older employees. It means what it sounds like. they're just there and they don't really do anything, but you don't want to throw them out.

7:16 PM
Did they change the comment flag system? I feel like there are less options than there used to be.

@DavidK yeah they did

I'm curious as to the reason. Was there a problem with the categories before?

the not constructive/rude one were basically the same

Gotcha. I guess that makes sense.

I'm not a huge fan of the other change as "no longer needed" isn't super clear to me but grouping the other two makes sense

7:23 PM
Did it make a difference to you mods which one was selected?

not really. realistically both the "not constructive" or "rude/abusive" (I think those were the categories?) both were not ideal and indications of potential issues
I kind of liked "too chatty" and "obsolete" though
but we also get, ah, a few more comments than most sites... so that distinction matters more ;-)

I don't like the new choices. I liked "not helpful" for when someone wasn't being rude, or at least not rude enough to warrant getting a rep ding.

comment flags never cause a rep ding
that only happens if a post is deleted via flags

Ah
Okay, then I'll use rude in the future.

Do rude/abusive comments go on a user's "record" though?

7:27 PM
@DavidK sort of - but there's no action taken unless we review them
the system generates an auto flag if someone receives enough of them in a short period of time
but it still requires manual intervention for something to happen

There should be a flag for "this user is being a tosser"

you could spam the site with blatantly offensive comments and other than them getting deleted (and you probably get rate limited eventually) nothing automatic happens afaik
(please don't try LOL)

@DavidK post enough comments that are flagged and the moderators will send you a friendly note.
@enderland do you think that the more... terse? among us here get upvotes simply because people don't hear "no" much these days?

I think it's just effective communication
incidentally I was told by a coworker today that my communication skills are excellent (or something like that, I forget the exact wording)

7:50 PM
I don't doubt it. You are likely one of the most articulate, if not the most articulate people in here.

Have to agree with that. Whenever I see you, Joe, Monica, or Jane post, I just get my upvote ready.

I also think that this site has helped with that immensely

Oh, I don't doubt that. It always makes me appreciate this site when I go back and look at some of my first posts.

This site has helped me see where I need work, that's for sure.

@DavidK lol yeah

8:12 PM
@DavidK yeah (CRINGE)

8:41 PM
was it claimable what did your boss say? Or company policy? I'm not sure how this can be answered without asking your company. — enderland ♦ 39 secs ago

@RichardU Interestingly, my intern post continues to garner both up and down votes, despite already being at -3. I had no idea anybody even read those ^^

11:26 PM
@Kaz It's always a crap-shoot when the valuation crowd are out there.

Kaz
11:46 PM
@RichardU Valuation crowd?
