Q: Question about Contacting previous employer post-hire question

ZeroContacting previous employer post-hire Hello, trying to understand what about this question is "too simple" to ask. I wanted to know if calling previous employers of an already hired employee for references is allowed in the state of California (state included in case of legalities). To me, it...

any of u guys have knowledge of access or SQL query
or any SE for sql

I'm pretty handy in SQL
(and Access if I have to)
what do you need?
otherwise for basic-medium query questions SO is the preferred site (DBA SE is for hardcore queries or DB engine related Qs)

I am running a query, as it first time, but not sure what is what as I can ony read what I understand
should I paste my query here
basicaaly trying to do this youtube.com/watch?v=PzWVUBslby8
getting a counter to work in PP so this video show how, but I zoomed in and wrote the same query but it throwing error

I can't really watch you tube at work.. post the query and I'll have a look at that

u can't youtube at work? :o
I didn't do anything to query just tried my best to copy from youtube video

@Nofel yeah stupid proxy forced on us
in fact I can't even get to sodding pastebin now it seems
can you paste it in chat?

10:45 AM
here?

I was in a Skype conference call, but browsing Workplace.SE on mobile. They had to call my name 4 times to catch my attention. lol

@MaskedMan have coffee
@motosubatsu SELECT
Format(DateDiff("d",Now(), [Target]), '00' AS days
Format(DateDiff("h",Now(),[Target]) Mon "00") AS hours ,
Format (DateDiff("n",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60,"00") As minutes,
Format (DateDiff("s",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60,"00") As seconds,
From dateCounter

@Nofel yeah if you can

This weekly Skype status meeting gets pretty boring usually.

@MaskedMan do u WFH?

10:46 AM
@Nofel ok.. looks like you are truing to get the days/hours/mins/secs between now and a target date?

yes

@Nofel No, we don't have that option.

where are you getting the target date from?
the datecounter table?
if so do you have such a table?

Strictly speaking, I don't work from anywhere. I just pretend to work and have other people get the work done.

@Nofel Why not use datepart?

10:49 AM
@motosubatsu yes I created one but SQL wrote it from yt video
@SnowI have no knwoledge of sql at all, just basic. Got this video which shows what I wanna do but doesn't show how he design db in access

Whoa, plenty of folks got the generalist badge a couple of minutes ago.

Uhuh. I gave humanity the gift of the Generalist badge.

I wonder what happened. Perhaps, some tag just got pushed into the top 40?

Yep. was very close.

are you doing this in an existing access application/db?

10:51 AM
@Snow What did you do?

just found a couple of fairly recent open questions that could have done with the termination tag and tagged them.

@MaskedMan myself included

@motosubatsu assuming I don't have such table
what do I need to do to make it and have that query

well really you just need to have somewhere that you are getting the target date from
it doesn't need to be in a table or anything
also are you stuck doing this in access?

My first answer on workplace got 9 upvotes. woah.
yes @motosubatsu
Basically the guy make it in access and connect Power Point presentation with it
which Is what I want, but he didn't tell how to make the table just gave what I showed

11:00 AM
ugh.. I was afraid you were going to say that.. working with dates in Access is pig-ugly
and usually involved mucking around in VBA
easiest way is probably going to be to create a table in your access database called "dateCounter" with a single datetime column called "Target"
then put one row in there with the value you are wanting

ugh, Access.

the query you posted then should work with the syntax fixed
give me a moment to fire up the hateful POS
and I'll make sure it works

is the query right?

not quite..there's some syntax errors but nothing too monumental

Access made me a table field name Field1.

11:05 AM
@Nofel double click the column name in the table designer and you should be able to rename it

cool, that does it. It has been 12 yrs since I used access or VBA

I'd forgotten how unhelpful Access error messages are

MS

here you go:
SELECT
Format(DateDiff("d",Now(), [Target]), "00") AS days,
Format(DateDiff("h",Now(),[Target]) Mod 24, "00") AS hours ,
Format (DateDiff("m",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60,"00") AS minutes,
Format (DateDiff("s",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60,"00") AS seconds
FROM dateCounter
sorry ignore that
use this:
SELECT
Format(DateDiff("d",Now(), [Target]), "00") AS days,
Format(DateDiff("h",Now(),[Target]) Mod 24, "00") AS hours ,
Format (DateDiff("n",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60,"00") AS minutes,
Format (DateDiff("s",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60,"00") AS seconds
FROM dateCounter
(mis typed an 'm' in place of an 'n')
although thinking about it that's not quite going to work properly
the mod stuff will lead to..oddities
actually the query is just plain not going to give you the right answers because it looks at each component individually

11:22 AM
How do I go to sql view
for the table
as I created new table
oh yea, It worked
came back to design view with the same time
@motosubatsu thnx.

the results of the query are wrong

Like date wrong?
according to the table, it says 01, 13 hrs , 00 min and 34 sec
will change it

datepart works in Access too.
It'll give you the parts you require.

@Snow it does? cool.. I didn't know they had added it in

Although this is in VBA.
But you can use this in Expression Builder to give you want you want, I imagine.

11:32 AM
Will it be easy if I send this presentation to a person and he runs it
and it will run smooth?
Q: what is data point?
Do I need to download it to add it to pp?

if this is for a PP that you are going to send round I think using access like this is a bad idea
since you'd need to send them the access db as well
would it not be better to do it all in VBA in PP instead?

They r layman, I can do presentation with slides but 5 months of slides is gonna take hell of time

I'm not suggesting doing it manually
just that keeping it all in the PP itself might be a better idea

what ideas do u have coz countdown to 5 months something will be a long

11:52 AM
sorry nofel... got distracted by work
this version of the SQL query should work: SELECT Format(DateDiff("d",Now(),[Target])-1,"00") AS days, Format(IIF(DateDiff("n",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60 = 0, DateDiff("h",Now(),[Target]) Mod 24 + 1, DateDiff("h",Now(),[Target]) Mod 24 ),"00") AS hours, Format(IIF(DateDiff("s",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60 = 0, DateDiff("n",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60 + 1, DateDiff("n",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60 ),"00") AS minutes, Format(DateDiff("s",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60,"00") AS seconds
FROM dateCounter;
but if the aim is for it to be in a PP presentation.. I'm still not convinced it's the best way, doesn't PP need a 3rd party add on to get things from access in the first place?

yes
data point

ahh cool
that's the one I was thinking of
that should work then
updated version of the query:
SELECT Format(DateDiff("d",Now(),[Target])-1,"00") AS days, Format(IIF(DateDiff("n",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60 = 0, DateDiff("h",Now(),[Target]) Mod 24 , DateDiff("h",Now(),[Target]) Mod 24 - 1 ),"00") AS hours, Format(IIF(DateDiff("s",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60 = 0, DateDiff("n",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60 , DateDiff("n",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60 - 1 ),"00") AS minutes, Format(DateDiff("s",Now(),[Target]) Mod 60,"00") AS seconds
FROM dateCounter;
then you just need to do the datapoint wizardry
can't really help on that part as I don't have it

I put a email to that person of why not do in JS
instead of me trying to show that in presentation, which can be doable but I cannot garauntee screw up acrosss continent

man is it just me or is TWP getting meaner? See this:

good stuff @motosubatsu . I understand Now(), datediff but like I don't have knowledge of sql but thanks.

12:07 PM
it's an awful, awful question and no doubt about it
but was the dogpiling necessary?
@Nofel even worse is datediff works subtly differently in Access vs T-SQL

what was the question in it though.
My mrs wanna get into db , but she is not much of a computer person, what do u suggest?

@Nofel oh don't get me wrong it was in no way a good or acceptable question for the site but the random users tripping over themselves to put the boot in felt.. harsh

reminds me of my early days on workplaced

@Nofel download a copy of SQL Express and SQL Server management Studio, and then start playing using tutorials like W3Schools

her question was, do I need to learn HTML

12:13 PM
@Nofel not for db stuff

and I was like, yea if u wanna be full stack
Another reason to add up in my notice
I still havent drafted by notice

A: How to deal with someone ignoring meeting room etiquette

MoronsYou walk in the room and tell him "We have the room booked now, sorry".

^^^ my theory: vast majority of HNQ passers-by read only question title and first sentence of the answer. That's the only way I could make sense of upvotes cast on that stuff. On a related note, 11 downvotes cast on it suggest that site regulars tend to read things a tiny little bit differently

@Nofel what's to draft? fill in the blanks in this and off you go

12:29 PM
@motosubatsu waiting for contract to arrive and think about reason if he asks me
althought it can be blunt line but dont wanna burn my bridges
wanna exit with a good relationship

It looks like we have been take on probation now.
Morning all

@gnat I like to call these people "knee-jerks". That was the first answer posted, and I think people just voted because they thought it was funny.

@gnat I believe that to be fact too
A one liner with 32 votes...

@MisterPositive Hodor.

Winter is coming...

12:31 PM
@Nofel yeah waiting on the contract is sensible... but when the time comes to submit your resignation don't over think it

@Nofel I am out of steamed milk sir.

Today I got a ticket friom QA person saying checkboxes are displaying double, which wasn't a issue when I showed my manager and he approved it good, now that other developer checked in work, I so wanna yell out to my manager "can't he f** see 2 checboxes on each other".

as for a reason, a polite and technically truthful one would be something like "the new location and package will make things easier for my family

@MisterPositive use kettle, it gives good steam

it's true.. after all you having a full on burnout would be difficult for your family :)
but avoids getting into any specifics that might burn bridges or stress you out

12:34 PM
@motosubatsu TBH I so wanna say, u guys r dumb and making me dumb too (which I am already am)
yea

@Nofel believe me we've all wanted to say something similar during a resignation - generally though it's not worth it
a friend of a friend gave a truly epic Reason You Suck speech during her leaving presentation once

@gnat What else can be done?

@motosubatsu I want the subject line to be "Attitude this mofos"
:P

@MisterPositive I think we are doing all we can do on that one - it's got the "too short" banner, multiple comments pointing out why it's an insufficient answer in it's current form (I'm being diplomatic there) and people have been throwing DV's at it left right and centre

@motosubatsu I'm not sure whether you can see the standard of one of the deleted answers on that question....

12:45 PM
@Snow the one that suggests engaging in intercourse behind the co-op bins?

That's the one.

in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, Jul 19 at 7:56, by gnat
how about "multiple Stack Overflow users armed by association bonus having no idea about norms at the site they arrived to and not worrying about it, only willing to keep entertained in a way that they used to, that is posting useless repetitive answers and comments and dumping their upvotes at everything that seems entertaining to them". Not lemmings, yeah

@Snow well it had novelty on it's side if nothing else :D
I love that it looks like someone registered that account just to post that insightful bit of workplace advice
presumably it's a sock puppet of an existing user

juicy user name too.

Question: so I am doing a course on Javascript

A saying for our times: "Actions speak louder than virtuous tweets"
Saw it & liked it so I thought I'd share it.
@MisterPositive Definitely not.

@MisterPositive no.. it's far too company-specifc (and the specific mention of the infant formula sets my trolldar off but I assumed good intentions and VTC with a helpful comment)

Dare I say we delete it....

1:17 PM
@MisterPositive I'm leaning towards les
*yes

I removed the company name. The DVs are enough to keep it off the front screen.

@Snow Aren't you busy? ;-} Back to the wall!

Busy waiting for a process to finish screwing up some data, yes.

@Snow I prefer to screw up my data by hand.. but then I'm old fashioned like that

Half a million records? Brave man.

1:25 PM
@Snow if you want something screwed up right you gotta screw it up yourself

Using DELETE instead of UPDATE usually does the trick. As does not putting parentheses correctly in between the ANDs and ORs in your where clause....

@Snow aint that the truth.. I've always enjoyed the old staple of an ill-placed wildcard as well

Snow, try TRUNCATE

DROP has less letters.

or DROP TABLE
alternatively you could get really creative and create a trigger on an unrelated table that deletes random records in your target table

1:36 PM
Or set up replication to use an empty database as the source...

@Snow That leans on the evil side a bit

@MisterPositive if you want a more insidious flavor of evil you can follow the instruction here

Or a job that renames stored procs every Tuesday.

@motosubatsu :-|

@Snow or one that disables all FK constraints and then deletes rows that would normally be bound by it?

1:42 PM
eeeeek
hacker alert!

Even better, just rename the FK fields so that point at the wrong tables.

@Snow haha... I like the cut of your jib

Store all text fields as a soundex code. That'll save a bit of space.

@Snow and put all DBs into Simple recovery mode, who needs transaction logs? they just suck up loads of sweet, sweet disk space
2

2:20 PM
Sweet, sweet disk space.

How many samosas are too many?
@motosubatsu Nice answer, sir.

2:39 PM
@Snow About 4, I guess?

@MaskedMan These samosas are large. About 3 inches to a side.

3 inches sounds like medium to me, 4 inches would be large.

@Snow thank you sir :)

Guys no one answer me
:(

@Nofel What is the question?

2:47 PM
Question: so I am doing a course on Javascript
my new job is angular and which is typescript, a subset of JS
should I be focused on angular or make my way acrosso JS first and then angular
as I will have 1 month

out of my area of expertise that one I'm afraid

out of my area of expertise as well, nonetheless, the general advice would be to focus first on what is important to the job, especially when the job is outside your area of expertise.

There's no angular in my life. Only curves.

Is it possible for ppl to get job "out of area of expertise"
hahah @Snow
jUST ASKING

3:06 PM
@Nofel I know it's possible, I've done it four times, LOL!

@Nofel I've just had an e-mail regarding an Angular workshop being run in Manchester on the 15th of Dec if that's any use to you?

@MaskedMan yeah, focus on the job duties before the technologies.

sure @motosubatsu

@motosubatsu When are you going to send me a Manchester United shirt?

@TheSnarkKnight guide me pls, when I get stuck in a tutorial say like stage 6 of 1-10
and cannot understand, I abadon it saying I cannot do it, coz concepts r hard
what to do

3:08 PM
@TheSnarkKnight I had no idea you wanted one
I'm sure I can obtain you one should you require?

@motosubatsu Just kidding.
@Nofel that's just your lack of confidence talking. Keep pushing through. You bang your head against the wall until the wall comes down.

I have seen myself learn quick through metaphors, analogy
and I find that kind of tutorials
but ur right, this time I need to bang it no matter what
but I have seen myself spend all night infront of pc, trying to do something but couldn't

@Nofel disrupt yourself. When you get stuck, get up, walk around, get something to drink, watch a show for a few minutes, then go back. You need to break out of the mindset that has you stuck.

Sometimes It work wonder, sometimes it doesn't
I did something yesyerdau which I didn't know I could do
created stuff dynamically, that is after 1 day of thinking
:P

@Nofel if I can pull myself up from being homeless and disabled, you can get through a tutorial. Also!!!! Another book for you! "Rhinoceros Success" It's a small, but very useful one.

3:21 PM
Oh I havent finished the old one yet
2 chapters and I couldn't do it
someone posted me from twitter that book
lol, I have to return it, it has been 3 months

@Nofel I see your potential. Don't give up on yourself, you are far better than you think you are.

I have to rewire myself @TheSnarkKnight when I am studying a tutorial I would keep listening and open a new tav news/iphone news (I so wanna get out of news about apple) or twuitter
I wanna see on screen of what is happening, some habits creep out of no where
Since I do mindfulness, I ask myself and audit myself of why is it happening
speaking of which I had to move my notes about my wife and in laws to evernote, now that my wife and sun uses my ipad
:P
@motosubatsu rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-62655589.html this place is so near to my work
so expensive
FML

You work in Debenhams?

hahah
no
Though u can give me present on my bday from there

Shame, I wanted discounts.

3:28 PM
as I love red herring jeans

@Nofel oof.. that's a bit pricey for a 2 bed, I suppose being furnished accounts for some of it. Also it's pretty nice

I do have discounts on runners if u want

I wanted one of these

Nice, I can get u discount of runners and gym wear
though

Have you seen me? Do I look like the kind of person who runs or goes to the gym?

3:32 PM
Morning

@motosubatsu yea they r pretty and expensive. But OMG, damn I wish I owe one.
@Snow nope. Just said it for FYI

I knew it... something was surely odd with the Generalist Badge not having anyone with it... seems that they manually run that query or what? Every 5-6 years perhaps?

@Nofel looking around it seems like rental prices have gone up a bit in the ~ 5 years or so since I last rented

morning @DarkCygnus

I suppose Bury is right in the zone for those who want to commute to Manc but not live there

3:33 PM
@DarkCygnus No. The stack as a whole needs to be up to the requirement. 40 tags having over 200 questions each.

Oh so that means we finally have 40 top tags?

Q: Pricing for month of work as freelance iOS Dev

AnonProgrammerSo I'm about to land my first client as freelance iOS developer. I did my research but didn't believe how much I could actually price, and ended up charging too low for a bit over 20 hours of work at $30 an hour. Total was a bit over $700. Reasons are because I had no idea what clients budget was...

@motosubatsu got my provisional form today, so will be sending it off. to my shock bury doesn't have a train station
otherwise wuld shift to manchester

@DarkCygnus Yes, @Snow added the termination tag to a bunch of questions, so a bunch of us got that tag all at once.

I guess reaching that is some relevant milestone for the site isn't it?

3:35 PM
@DarkCygnus What he said.

Can we have a badge celebrating meaningless milestones.

Lol.. been busy huh?

There's nothing meaningless about milestones.

@Snow I was thinking of becoming a nihilist, but then realized that it's all much ado about nothing.

@Nofel well it does it's just not that useful unless you want to go to Manchester

3:38 PM
Nihilist is one of the words that I never bothered find out the meaning for. It's in the same vocabulary group as "Puce" and "Mauve".

cool

@Snow You seem to be deleting your answers quite frequently these days. What's the deal with that? :)

@Snow I wouldn't bother looking it up.. there's no point to it (or anything)

@MaskedMan My answer didn't have any significant differences and wasn't as fully fleshed as the other answers on that question. Doesn't really seem any point in keeping a low-quality answer there for no real purpose.

@motosubatsu is this answerable?

3:43 PM
Jul 13 at 14:13, by Masked Man - 仮面の男
I am a part-time nihilist.
:)

I would just be guessing if I did

@DarkCygnus sorry.. I meant to posit that very question, Personally I don't think it is
but I thought I'd take a straw poll in here first, I'm trying to shy away from the Workplace tendency to VTC-first and ask questions later

@motosubatsu You shouldn't. Close first, improve the question, then reopen it.

@motosubatsu People go through the review list with a "she loves me, she loves me not" method.

The longer a poor question stays open, the greater the chances of receiving poor answers, and then it becomes harder to save the question.
... and if the question hits HNQ, all hell breaks loose, of course.

3:47 PM
On the flip side of the coin, closed questions are more likely to stay closed than be edited and reopened.
closed questions are often viewed as being "bad" questions and left alone.

@Snow agreed.. people just sort of skip over them

I feel that questions should be saved via asking for clarification by comments, not by closure.
that's what comments are there for, after all.
if people commented rather than stabbing the VTC button, more questions might be saved. But no, it's easier to stab the button and choose a reason.

@motosubatsu The point is, the people who vote to close should be trying to improve the post, not (only) the other guys who see it in the review queue.

and while I can't back this up with y'know evidence I get the impression that we close a much higher %age then the other major stacks, and it's kind of depressing when you look down the main page and 80% + of the questions are "[On hold]"

We should be using the tag more often.

3:50 PM
@MaskedMan People who VTC invariably don't put any effort into saving the question.

@MaskedMan I'll take this as a chance to use my tag edit cookies I just got

@Snow I'm guilty of this (sort of) - because if I think I can improve it I will try and do that instead of VTC

@Snow Well, I do. Though unfortunately, not as frequently as I wish to.

but I think many don't even bother to try and improve it

3:53 PM
fixed one
hey guys got a question for you

Q: Question about Contacting previous employer post-hire question

ZeroContacting previous employer post-hire Hello, trying to understand what about this question is "too simple" to ask. I wanted to know if calling previous employers of an already hired employee for references is allowed in the state of California (state included in case of legalities). To me, it...

so, following what we are speaking here, is this a reopen request question?
is saying "how can I improve my Q" the same as subliminally saying "i want to edit and reopen my q"

@Snow I think we are pulling the trigger to close far too soon and not editing enough. Your question above is a perfect example of where only the OP can fix it.

We have a fairly good proportion of "edited and reopened" questions, so I am happy with the community's efforts there. Many closed questions are beyond saving, so we shouldn't expect that percentage to be anywhere close to 100%.

is this one also another way to say please open my post? workplace.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/4888/…

@TheSnarkKnight which question above? Or do you mean the one that Cygnus linked?

@DarkCygnus I had voted to reopen the question, now it says I can revote to reopen tomorrow. :o

3:58 PM
@MaskedMan the thing is, should they also have the reopen req tag added?

time for me to run away - need to go pick the car up from the garage (and give them half my bank balance in exchange as per usual(
laters people

@DarkCygnus That's a bit of a grey area. He is asking to explain how the question could be improved. It sort of implies that the goal is to reopen the question eventually. But there is also a possibility that the answer is "too bad, that question cannot be improved enough to be acceptable here", in which case it doesn't make sense to ask for it to be reopened. Nonetheless, you can "request" anything, so there's no harm in putting it in.

@motosubatsu later

My personal preference is to save questions rather than delete them. If I have to bend the rules a bit, I would do that for saving questions, not deleting them.

There's times that I just don't understand the reason for a question being closed. I sometimes see the question as being completely clear and answerable, but other people don't see it that way and close it down.

4:02 PM
is there something like

That is all the more reason for me to vote to close poor questions. That's a bit of a damage control step, which I consider necessary for the question to be eventually saved.

poor questions should be down-voted. I thought that was the point of the voting system as opposed to the VTC action which is "this question isn't a good fit for this site".

If you put aside all the mumbo jumbo, putting a question "on hold" actually means putting answers on hold.

Votes are a quality rating. VTC is a suitability issue. The two are completely different IMO.

Close vote means the question in its current form isn't fit for the site, it doesn't mean the question cannot be saved.
Downvotes rarely help save the question. Besides once the avalanche effect starts, it only frustrates the OP and makes it even less likely that anyone will care to save the question. Close votes are capped at 5, and don't penalize the OP in terms of reputation, which usually means they are more likely to cooperate to improve the question.
If the question is close enough to "acceptable", I don't cast downvote, I cast close vote, improve the question (with clarification from OP, if necessary), then cast reopen vote (or retract my close vote). I cast question downvotes only on questions that are way too far beyond "acceptable".

Q: I can freely choose the operating system on company workstation. Any concerns to be aware of?

user79637I'm taking a new job soon. The new company will let me install any operating system of my choice on the company workstation. At my current job, I was given a choice between Ubuntu and MacOS, so I am unfamiliar with having completely free rein. I use Gentoo exclusively as my daily driver at home...

@MaskedMan with your edit, it is a valid question: VTRE

@TheSnarkKnight thanks!

@MisterPositive LOL
thanks for the unnecesary comment flag though ;)

@MaskedMan The problem is he is asking for technical concerns not workplace concerns
I thought initially workplace concerns but after reading its not that

@IDrinkandIKnowThings Not necessarily. If you go it alone, you are taking a risk of running into workplace problems with noone to turn to for help and putting yourself under pressure because nobody buys your excuse.

@MisterPositive funny thing is that a post with a comments tends to be higher up than a post with no comments and same votes

nm just edited the question to ask specifically about workplace concerns... i have a bad feeling we are going to get some tech h8rs

For example, at one of my previous jobs, there was a "beta" rollout of Linux OS going on, and despite my manager advising me to the contrary, I joined the bandwagon. A couple of months later, there was some issue with a remote server, and fixing that required IT support to do some stuff on the local machine. The Windows guys got the issue fixed in a matter of minutes, while I had to figure it out on my own.

and removed asking about the specific OS to hopefully head that off

@IDrinkandIKnowThings good thing we have that Post Notice now eh? ;)

Thankfully, there wasn't any urgent stuff I had on my plate, otherwise my manager would be breathing down my neck with, "Didn't I tell you so?"

@DarkCygnus has it actually been used? I have asked for it several times and not seen it yet

@IDrinkandIKnowThings I saw it once or twice
ill search for one and show you...

@TheSnarkKnight @motosubatsu One Indian guy King lit up my day with the most hilarious example of Loophole Abuse.
