Hey TMOTTM, and welcome to The Workplace! I'm a bit unclear on what you're question is here. As explained in our help center, "You should only ask practical, answerable questions based on actual problems that you face." What is the problem you're facing? Are you worried that answering with the WAR approach won't work? If not, why not? If you can edit your question to make it clear what the issue is, you'll get much better answers. Thanks in advance! — jmac 25 secs ago
(that questions as-is seems like it should be closed)
Hey Cole, and welcome to The Workplace. As explained in our help center, "You should only ask practical, answerable questions based on actual problems that you face." If you want to apply to internships without being a student, editing your question to say that will get you much better answers. In general, "Chatty, open-ended questions diminish the usefulness of our site" which most 'why...' questions end up being. Thanks in advance! — jmac 27 secs ago
Another one that could really be closed.
I can't help but feel like this is not a constructive question as-asked that has a decent question (improperly scoped) tacked on at the end:

Q: How to work with a micro-manager?

happybuddhaI am trying to learn to work with all sorts of people, but I am just stretched out on how I can learn to work my current manager. In my opinion he is too much of a micro manager who is rude and wants an update of every single minute of my billable hours. An example of his nosey-ness, if a colle...

Basically, he lists several separate issues:
1. The manager wants to-the-minute recording of billable time
2. He doesn't like socializing during work hours
3. He doesn't like people browsing online documentation during work hours

The conclusion is that this is just 'micromanagement' and asks for how to deal with the person, but I don't think answering the question will necessarily solve those issues.
At any rate, I've left a comment, but if anyone has a brilliant idea on how to edit it, please have at it.
Hey happybuddha, I'm a bit unclear on what you're asking. Is he content with any of the people in his teams' work? If so, what are they doing differently from you? Why is he so concerned with billable work? Are you being paid hourly or salaried? Being a micromanager is a symptom, and not a cause. Without having a bit more of an idea of why he is micromanaging, it is incredibly difficult to answer. An edit may help get better answers. Thanks in advance! — jmac 3 mins ago

Hey user, and welcome to The Workplace! As explained in our help center, "Questions should be about problems you are encountering or have encountered in the workplace, and not the learning/applying of specific job functions." If you can edit your question to focus on a specific problem you're facing that we can help you with, you'll get much better answers. Thanks in advance! — jmac 23 secs ago

Hey mkzk, and welcome to The Workplace. I think you have the core of a great question here, but unfortunately it's attracting close votes for being unclear. I'm going to make an edit to try to keep it open, but if you think you can improve it, or if I missed the point and the current question won't be helpful, please feel free to edit it yourself. Hey user, and welcome to The Workplace! Could you clarify your question a bit? You work for Company A. Company A can assign you to projects in subsidiaries B, C, D, or E all in other countries than Company A on a project-basis (several months). You say you trust the company, and aren't worried about your CV, so what is your concern? As far as legal/tax consequences, I'm afraid that's a bit out of our scope here at the workplace, but if you could edit your question to focus on what you're concerned about with your 'profile' we may be able to help. does there exist a software position in canada which provides normal pay, no insane overtime, and at the same time engaging work? From my 4 years of experience it seems that only 2 of these are possible at any given time.

@Quillion Yes

@Chad where does such a magical company kingdom exist might I ask? My friends in the industry also have had no luck with finding all 3 requirements met, except one who has become a freelancer.

You have to follow the yellow brick road to the emerald kingdom, consult the wizard, kill the wicked witch, then click your heels together 3 times
Generally with anything in development you can have any 2 or 3 things. Usually its fast, cheap, or good... but I think it probably works for your requirements as wll

so wait, are you saying that it is possible to get 3 out of 3, or that you can only have 2, which seems to have been the case so far

5:24 PM
It is possible... but really hard. Most places that offer great pay and engaging work want extra effort.
and Companies that have engaging work and reasonable hours do not have to pay as well
and if its great pay and reasonable hours the work probably sucks

yeah that is exactly what I saw as I tried everything from small startups to huge corporate. Currently stuck in corporate and actually contemplating completely changing my whole profession due to lack of balance to any of the things. Since not having all 3 makes it difficult on the family

There is a balance but You cant have everything you want with out giving something up.

@enderland this is not as simple. At Programmers and SO, I can afford letting some garbage slip through only to keep my flag weight high, here it's opposite

@RhysW yeah but the combined percapita income of those countries is like $100US

@RhysW I don't really do sports either. But I used to fight in the SCA (medieval/renaissance re-creation group); we use real armor and wooden weapons. (Rattan, actually.) I wasn't very good, but I enjoyed it for a while. My best form was polearm ("glaive", but limited to 6' for safety reasons so more like a staff.)

@CMW it's funny; I never got into LARPing at all. I don't think it was really a "thing" yet when I found the SCA, and once I was fighting in the SCA I didn't seek out LARP once it did show up. (Plus, I never went to a lot of conventions.)

CMW
@MonicaCellio I'm LARPing every day

@RhysW I tried that a few times. When I was in Salt Lake City I had some friends that were into the Vampire LARP scene. Was fun

7:25 PM
How do stats work in LARP anyway? I mean, how can you (say) play a high-level fighter if you yourself aren't very coordinated or strong?

@MonicaCellio the group I found used foam stuff (basically wood covered with some foam) - this was nice

@MonicaCellio you dont

lots easier

the stats are related to additional abilities, things like fighting are all your own ability

CMW
@Chad I've got a few alt characters, I pull out every now and then
bard is not really working for me, but tricksters are fun

7:26 PM
@RhysW oh good; I think "do something that vaguely fits you" is likely to work better than "be anything and we'll jiggle the rules so it'll work", but some might feel too limited. (OTOH, foam weapons should be pretty accessible.)

they have to meet certain regulations, cant just ducttape foam to a stick
apparently

@RhysW there are very defined regulations for this, as you might imagine

i bet

@RhysW I would hope there'd be some safety rules, yes. (The SCA has that too -- even though you're wearing armor, the wepon still has to pass inspection. So does your armor BTW.)
