@PatoSáinz Queue TWP question: "When including My Little Ponies on my resume, what is the most professional Pony:Content ratio?"
For anyone in the US, how is the job market currently? It was pretty miserable after 2008, and I've seen some recovery in the news, but for people actually working there, does it feel like things are going well?
@PatoSáinz In all honesty though, I've made a (less atrocious) version of that as a cover letter. I used the company's website layout for introducing products and adapted it to promote myself instead. It didn't work, but I was very pleased with the finished product anyway.
@PatoSáinz The company I applied for was the type I'd assume has the HR people actually using their website/products, but I could always be wrong. I know my current company definitely wouldn't have the first clue, but my current company is in a very different industry.

@jmac oh ok

also, did that company had a nice-looking website?
@jmac That's a very volatile topic. If you look at my Facebook feed, you'd think the end is near.... which does lead me to ask... what's up with Fukishima?
@jmort253 That's a very volatile topic. If you look at my Facebook feed, you'd think the end is near.... Though in all honesty, it would seem as if it's being handled, the long-term impacts to humans have been much smaller than they could have been, and barring any serious unforeseen problems with cleaning up the spent fuel rods, the worst is behind.
(from foreigners in japan, there seem to be two major sides regarding Fukushima. One refuse to believe anything TEPCO says due to the inept handling of the crisis in the early days., and start posting alarmist articles from people not qualified to say one way or another. The other look at what the official reports are about what's going on from Japanese and international authorities, and figure things will be fine)
@jmort253 Yeah, I suppose there isn't really an authoritative answer as to whether or not I will be able to find a job. Living overseas makes it virtually impossible to apply for positions effectively due to the time difference and handicap of signaling issues with relocation and start-dates and coordination.
@jmort253 Money isn't an issue. Nor is lack of professional skills (though I may want to swap industries). I will read the cracked article when I get home (promise).
I have a 4 year degree, I've been in the same industry for the past 7 years doing sales/contract negotiation, which is pretty universal at any rate.
Having a positive attitude is probably something I can muster. It's just the crippling doubt and uncertainty that gives me pause.
In my 10 years in Japan, I have seen people who want to do anything end up giving up and compromising because the act of changing takes at least a decade in most companies here, and it's a career killer if you actually push change that someone above you doesn't want.
I've seen very talented people tossed in positions where they are told, "You can cause the least trouble here. You will never be promoted or listened to by anyone of value in this company again. Do your best to keep your nose clean."
@jmac I don't have experience with Japanese business culture, but my grandmother's analogy still holds true. The difference may involve a slightly different approach or finding a different employer. Sometimes doing anything can mean doing something different.
Change in the US is even something greatly feared.
@jmort253 Not many people swap jobs in Japan. It is career suicide in many cases. I would estimate that 98% of the employees of my company have never worked in any other company in their life, and it is similar for most companies in Japan. Not to say your grandmother's advice is bad, it just isn't realistic in all situations.
When someone asks a bad question, the closed question system is designed to have three goals:
Prevent bad questions from causing harm as-is
Allow time for editing/improvement of the question
Auto-cleanup if the question is closed and not edited/improved
With answers, we don't have that same l...
Several months ago, our small company (around 20 people), hired a marketing manager (which is a new position within this company, he doesn't actually have any marketers to manage).

Hi Jen, welcome to The Workplace. I'm sorry to hear that you feel treated unfairly and I'm even more sorry to have to tell you, that questions about legal advice are off-topic for this site. You have to ask a lawyer about this. — CMW42 secs ago

We have 1 men's toilet + 1 urinal at work for about 15-20 people and 1 women's toilet for 3-4 females. The problem we have is that some of the employees don't check if everything has been flushed properly and that the bowl is clean.
According to the employees working here for a few years, this ...
This is asking for interpretation and application of employment law. Unfortunately, this is not an appropriate question for this site as any answer which is appropriate will require a legal perspective. — enderland4 secs ago
Having just been rejected as a candidate for a job because I do not show the number of years of experience they require, I have some questions about how "years of experience" is interpreted by hiring managers.
More to the point:
How can I overcome the assumption that I do not have the skills

there's a comment / flag to migrate a question from Programmers to TWP, consider chiming in:
Please provide more details, preferably examples when team members don't do their job or are disrespectful. Also, how long has the lead been working? Has the lead been from the same team? Was anyone on the promotion line for the lead's position? These details will help provide a good answers and not general advice. I've marked your question to be migrated to workplace.stackexchange.com, but I think you need to improve it. — superM2 hours ago

Can someone please explain what the employer wants to get from the question, "Why shouldn't we hire you?"
What type of answers are generally acceptable responses to this question?
Due to extended exposure to wide SE network, hot questions tend to attract certain amount of low quality answers. These answers would better be (and eventually are) removed, but on smaller / subjective-ish sites removal takes quite a lot of time due to limitations in moderation power and inadequa...
It is technically feasible, when adjustment involves data that is available at the moment when hotness score is calculated.
If the adjustment involves only AnswerCount, it's easy to implement, taking into account that current formula uses it anyway:
(MIN(AnswerCount, 10) * QScore) / 5 + Answer...
As an example, adjustment to lower part of the formula (age factor) can look like this:
@enderland actually, there are more than I can handle... I hit the voting limit about an hour ago.
at Programmers (and until recently here) I tried to leave explanatory comments when voting down. But recent garbage waves seem to be too large for that...
For few recent months, I've got a habit of downvoting answers which quality doesn't look OK to me.
