Q: Will the success of WhatsApp change the way interviewing is done?

DraconarBy now everyone is acquainted with the stories of both of the whatsapp's founder flunked interviews at big tech companies and their late success. With that in mind, could this episode be a catalyst for change? If companies are willing to lose billion dollar's worth employees for its processes, ...

Look for companies built with long term goals, not flash-in-the-pan, VC-hyped cost-centers. Then base your strategies on the successful.

A: How can I provide constructive criticism of work that still needs improvement?

itcouldevenbeaboatIt's very natural for your brain to react negatively to hearing that "there is room for improvement." That is usually because, in our lives, in the past, this statement often comes before rejection, disappointment, and failure. Even though it's well-meaning, people still react badly. Try this in...

There's a flag on this post, and I'm having trouble wrapping my head around it. I think the author is plain wrong, but I'm not sure it qualifies as not an answer. It's definitely bare minimum effort. Anyone have any logical reason's to actually support removing this?

"in our lives, in the past, this statement often comes before rejection, disappointment, and failure" - this sounds like a pure opinion statement, it is not backed up with anything — gnat 13 secs ago
@jmort253 consider insufficient explanation notice

You write that A private beta is the final stage. I always thought that A public beta is the final stage. I'm not convinced by the restaurant analogy, because restaurants aren't community-built. If the small community of private beta testers don't succeed, what is the risk in giving the wider community of public beta testers a shot at trying, before finally closing the site? — gerrit Jan 15 '13 at 17:42
^^^ +1

@JimG. the risk should be obvious. Every time we shut down a site, we're effectively shelving the contributions of everyone who tried to make it work. That ain't fun. And it doesn't get better when you expand that from a couple hundred people who sign up for the initial run.
We've actually been moving further away from the notion of a clearly distinct "private" phase right along - pretty much anyone who wants in can access a private beta, and we routinely run them for two weeks or more past the launch to give folks an opportunity to get more interested folks in if they can.
What remains - and what will almost certainly remain regardless of how many other changes to the process and terminology find their way in - is simply the notion that if there isn't an active, enthusiastic, focused core community... Then there's no point to hosting a site.
We periodically run sites for more experimental topics, and have done variations on our launch criteria for them - what ends up invariably resulting from this is a site that chews up a lot of our team's time (which is pretty much always in short supply) and never really bootstraps.

@jmort253 I think since it has a notice now that if we give it a few days for the OP to improve it then you have justification if they dont...

Q: How can I best calculate a salary when the job title they are offering me doesn't seem to match any existing job roles?

AjaxkeviSay you are getting hired and received an offer of 'X' for title 'A'. You want some thinking time and are doing some research online; for example glassdoors. Title A is not known on the internet and there are no similar job titles as you are going to do something completely new for a company. Ho...

@Shog9: OK. I didn't know that StackExchange was trying to be more inclusive with the private Betas. I saw that 'Sexuality' was canned after 13 days and wondered who participated in that Beta.

Just leave if you've got a better offer. Come on. That's a great reason to leave a job, and everybody knows it; the only people that will cynically argue against this and bemoan job-hopping are middle managers that are afraid of losing their fiefdoms. I guarantee that they'd leave in a second if they found something that was worth the risk. — Patrick87 11 hours ago
^^^ I'm going to frame this on my wall, next to my computer.

@Shog9 of course, the fewer of these that are given time to succeed or flesh themselves out into meaningful sites, the less likely folks like me are to even commit to them...

I think there is a difference in an interviewer not calling at all vs calling at a completely wrong time. The other question refers to a different situation, although similar. — enderland 1 min ago

@enderland time does very little; it's all about the people: are they around? Do do they have problems to solve? Are they solving them? ...Which is why we've moved to shorter time periods allowed for the stages in Area51: proposals that took years to get to launch did very poorly; the people weren't there.
Eventually, this should be a system that runs proposal to beta in a matter of weeks, which will allow for much faster, less painful failures... And much faster, less stressful paths to success.

@Shog9 this I agree with, had workplace been axed I probably would have quit the entire SE network more or less since I'd have been a bit saddened to see all that work go away

@enderland But if you think about it, TWP got axed at least twice: such questions (in the context of working as a programmer) were nominally on-topic for both SO and Progse at various points. It took iteration, trial and error, to find the formula that worked - better to embrace this process from the outset.

@Shog9 I doubt Workplace as a site would ever succeed under the shorter time period you describe, now, though
(this is all fairly theoretical at this point obviously too since I doubt SE will nuke a just launched site, lol)

@enderland well, think about why that is: y'all have demonstrated a strong commitment to identifying and solving problems, hard problems, inherent in the topic; you've welcomed new folks into the fold and helped them learn, built a community much larger than the one you started with. In return, we've committed to supporting you for the foreseeable future.

Lacking the former, the latter really doesn't make sense. And whether stated or implicit, this is how it works from start to finish: we devote a lot more time and resources to folks who are themselves devoting their time and resources.

well my point is also that most of the regulars here I don't think were here at the start (maybe? I'm not sure)
I feel like I'm arguing, I'm more musing at this point than trying to be confrontational

It's a good mix I guess

5:53 PM
@enderland it's not just mix, it's growth. 47 of those who followed proposal, 63 of those who participated in private beta => about 9000 users total now (310 pages x 36 users), about 600 having over 200 rep now

Q: Is it worth getting a Software Engineering degree if I already have a BAS in CIS focusing on Web Dev?

Thom DuranI graduated college about 3 years ago. I received my degree as a BAS in CIS with a focus on Web Development. I chose this degree as it focused on Web Dev and was available online. Unfortunately due to having a child young and needing to work full time my options were limited. I also don't fee...

I went ahead and put this on hold since it is more of a "what skills/education should I learn". If anyone sees how this could possibly be edited and reopened, please take a crack at it.

Hey Xanathos, welcome to the Workplace. Could you expand and share the experiences of one of the people you know who have had luck with this strategy? On our site, we prefer answers to be backed up with either a reference or experiences that demonstrate your answer is correct. Hope this helps. — jmort253 26 secs ago
^^^^ I want to convey that I don't think that's a bad answer, nor do I plan to remove it. But I sometimes leave comments like this laying around if I think the post could be made even better. Even good posts can be edited to become great posts.
The fact that Xanathos knows people who have had success with the proposed solutions suggests this person could easily edit.
