Hello user welcome to The Workplace. It seems you're attempting to comment on another answer instead of answering the question with your own. Since answers on our site are ranked in order of votes or randomly, referring to the "previous poster" doesn't make sense. Please consider an edit to modify this to answer the question, or remove it. Hey, nice new stylesheet.

3:46 AM
Hi @jcmeloni, what do you think of the new look?

1 hour later…
Jim
4:51 AM
Excited to finally see the new look!
was out and about when it went up, couldn't see any of it from the mobile site

@Jim It's awesome!
I still see the old favicons though... I think I have to restart the browser :(
Chrome loves to heavily cache things.
Speaking of cache... I still see the old logo on the about page:
TW
not sure if that's cached or leftover skins.

Same here.

Same here too
I think it hasn't been switched over yet (it should be), it also hasn't been switched over on the Stack Exchange Site List
Does the site text load really slowly for anyone else?
For me it's taking a good 1-2 seconds for the text to appear even after all the backgrounds and buttons and the like have loaded.

5:33 AM
Workaround for the image issue: upload via another SE site and copy the URL. — Jim 42 mins ago
For when reporting bugs ^^^^^
@jmac Yeh, it is slower, now that you mention it.
The fastest site is Super User.
I don't know why but I almost feel like it's being served right from my computer!

@jmort253 cached

Super User? It feels like there's more cache there than any other site on the network...

6:05 AM
hot SO question: stackoverflow.com/questions/21910769/… - 9 answers just in a few hours. It always strikes me why there are so little upvotes in questions like that
@Jin I noticed that when I open a dialog to flag a question and drag it, it behaves differently from what I see at Programmers, SO and MSO. Part of the dialog that gets outside of white area, into the blue, disappears. Could you please take a look

6:37 AM
@Jin @MonicaCellio Yeah, it's still cached at the CDN edge. Fixing the cache breakers now.
fixed when you refresh

@balpha Can I say that 'fixing the cache breakers' sounds awesome?

I'd love to tell you that it is, but in fact it's a very boring thing :)
and automated in most places, but that's not really doable in this case

That didn't seem to fix the about page though

no, that was just for chat
I'll check the about page

Oddly, the about page has a different logo in the URL tab image place thing.
(that is the tops of my descriptive abilities for a Friday afternoon)

6:43 AM
"URL tab image place thing" does sound a lot more interesting than "favicon"

Oh, wait, the tabbed image thing for the main site is still the old one too.
it's called a 'favicon'? Really?
Web Developers clearly never took a course in marketing.
Wow, it's short for 'favorite icon'? That is...oddly Japanese.

I think you can blame it on Microsoft, I'm pretty sure Internet Explorer was the first to have it.

n March 1999, Microsoft released Internet Explorer 5, which supported favicons for the first time.[4] Originally, the favicon was a file called favicon.ico placed in the root directory (e.g., en.wikipedia.org/favicon.ico) of a web site. It was used in Internet Explorer's favorites (bookmarks) and next to the URL in the address bar if the page was bookmarked.[5][6][7][4]
Okay, I will continue to refer it to the "URL tab image place thing" though. Or the Utipt for short.

about page and favicon are fixed

Awesome!
I should make a userscript to make the default John Doe user turn in to a Jane Doe half the time.
(not really)

6:55 AM
There's another two or three layers of caching there, not sure it's worth digging through. Note that all of this will/would've fixed itself automatically at most 24h (and usually less) after the launch

Caching Caches Itself now?
(don't worry about it -- thanks for the support, thought it had to be done manually hence pointing it out)
@balpha I think we have taken enough of your time away from development in order to "fix the cache breakers" (no matter how cool it sounds, apparently it's very boring)
@balpha If you're around still, is the issue with the site loading slowly also related to caching? I am getting the backgrounds and elements about half a second before the text:

Well, the main issue is that all those images are delivered to you from a CDN ("content delivery network") that has servers all over the world, so when your browser downloads things like the favicon, it doesn't have to call New York (were our datacenter is), but can call a CDN server (called "edge server") closer to you, so you get the images faster.
These edge servers cache the images for 24 hours, so when the first user requests "favicon.ico", the edge server has to ask New York itself, but for everyone else it can just remember what it sent previously. That only turns into a problem when
takes breath
@jmac If at all that should really only happen the first time you load the site. Are you seeing it consistently?

@balpha Yes.
And if possible, could you please delete the message that I removed there? It had personally identifying info I would rather have banished.
oh, no it didn't]
Thank goodness. PrntScrn just records tabs, not the taskbar at the bottom.

yep, looks clean to me
have to go for a bit; I'll look at the loading issue later

But yeah, every time I load the site or a question I get the same style-before-text result.

7:07 AM
yeah, I think I know what the issue is
I can reproduce the problem in firefox

Ah, it's a FireFox thing
sorry for being one of 'them'
go off and be productive, problems can wait.
Thanks for all the support!

Ooh think i've stumbled across a little css bug

CMW
flagging in the review queue?

@jmac Fix is made, I'll build it out in a few minutes
@RhysW @StéphaneMartin is your man for all matters CSS

@CMW similar to, it is a problem in the review queue, if i VTC a question in the close queue and scroll down one notch too far the box hides behind the background and i cant cast the vote

CMW
exactly
or if the post is very short, the button just won't be visible

yeah

CMW
8:30 AM
@StéphaneMartin I made a screenshot of it, if that helps
also, firefox 27.0.1
@balpha who can I talk to about assets?

Do you want to invest in the company? Or do you mean digital assets? :)

CMW
I would love to have them served through https. the rest of the site works like that already :)
Philes :D

HTTPS support is experimental at the moment. Most static files are already protocol-relative, but you may get mixed-content warnings for things like user images etc. For the moment, that's [status-it-is-how-it-is]. Once we officially announce HTTPS support, we'd like to have 99.9% of those issues fixed.

CMW
cool, looking forward to that
I'm actually using a plugin for my browser, called https anywhere, which forces https wherever possible
with that I don't get mixed content warnings, but actual missing assets :)
might be a good way for you guys to find problems around that topic

How so? A mixed-content warning is a lot more obvious than a missing image
@jmac fix is live now

CMW
8:48 AM
I found a missing file (especiall if it was CSS) more obvious, but you're the expert :)

@CMW Hi CMW, which css bug did you find?

CMW
In the review queue, when flagging, the overlay dialog hides behind the teal frame
is teal the right color name?

@CMW blue

CMW
thanks

dont need concepts of any of these 'fancy' colours

CMW
8:57 AM
^^
'ultramarine'

@CMW Could you paste a screenshot please?

@CMW Thanks!

CMW
@StéphaneMartin Happy to help

Q: Migration path to Workplace?

gnatWorkplace has been officially graduated: new site design has no "beta" anymore, and privileges are set to the level of graduated sites. @StéphaneMartin related to the VTC and flagging issues in the review queues, the edit queues have a similar issue, the suggested editors avatar and name is cut off

Q: How can I remain professional when my manager agrees with my bully?

Heart hurtingI would like to ask some questions in regards with the workplace bullying. I had my lunch in front of my desk, as usual, when one of my colleagues started complaining that my lunch was smelly and disgusting. She then came to me and said: “I know it’s your lunch, so yuck!” I did not say anything,...

I don't understand his problem that much
maybe because I always eat in the kitchen
that woman spraying over everything and stuff

@AlexM. basically, a coworker reacted badly and ruined his food, then threw items at his face (a hat), he reported the incident to HR, who informed the manager, the manager then blamed all the activity on the person being bullied, and threatened them even more basically

him complaining, him being moved and accused of bad sight when complaining about the lighting conditions
what the hell, are they like 5th graders

CMW
Her, I'm guessing

All of them really

12:35 PM
I thought OP was a guy

CMW
There is an issue there, but I'm not sure it's one we can help with

'you hurt my feelings so im going to passively agreessively return this gift in total silence' is a 5th grader thing to do aswell
@CMW Ive tried to focus the question more on 'what steps can i take next after my manager doesnt help my bully situation'

CMW
oh,you actually did some re-wording. re-reading.

@CMW haha, i redid everything pretty much

this reminds me, I left a salad in the fridge
hope nobody touched it, otherwise I'll have to buy a ton of hats lol

12:39 PM
@AlexM. it smelt, so i put it outside

:O

CMW
@RhysW Now it's a question that will elicit some helpful answers at least

you better prepare for two hats now mister

CMW
though not to the OP, probably, as their manager and HR basically layed out their options

@CMW yeah thats what i tried to make it like at least

CMW
12:40 PM
wasn't the hat the gift in the first place?

@CMW I dunno, HR didnt get involved that much, first they just passed it off to manager, but if he is complaing about the manager surely they wouldnt tell him
@CMW yeah
@CMW :D i think you edited over my edit :P

CMW
@RhysW I meant to change your edit by a couple characters
Did I hijack it?

@CMW A little :P i fixed it now though

CMW
Ah, we race-conditioned

got both of our stuff there now (Y)
yeah i still stand by my suggestion of putting a lock on a question when being edited

CMW
12:49 PM
feature request: optimistic locking

or if not a lock, a warning
'user X is curretly editing this, would you like to continue?'
that way people can choose to hijack or not
or atleast know its a possibility
right, lunch is over for me, back to work, laters!

CMW
:)
@RhysW enjoy... uh... work!

cya :)

A: What steps should someone take when reporting their bullying issue to management isn't taken seriously?

user1363989If your manager thinking it's your fault AND HR departement is refusing to do their work, escalate it to the next level of management. I'm sure, they're very interested in the (mis-)behaviour of your supervisor

sad I don't have 20k rep right now, would throw a delete vote there :P

@enderland I'm working on your 20K (just have to be careful to avoid triggering serial voting scripts)

@enderland Agreed, only just realized I lost my vote to delete :(. @gnat Good call mind if I add to that?

CMW
@enderland I think that answer used to fit the original question. at least sort of.

@CMW I typically sympathize answers invalidated by question edits, but this is not the case here. Crappy fastest gun "shots" that basically exploit weaknesses of original question version aren't worth it

CMW
@gnat I agree, it's still low quality

@enderland we've been tweeting about workplace.se

“How can I prepare to get hit by a bus?” Our Workplace Q&A site is out of beta. And it’s beautiful. http://workplace.stackexchange.com/questions?sort=votes

How is it that we have never had that question

5:11 PM
@Jin In other news, "it’s a self-help group for commiserating."

@Jin great to see that question is already protected - this sort of advertising tends to bring low quality lemming answers along with views :)

Jin
@jmac ha. I remember when Jeff didn't believe in our gaming.se site, and it turns out to be one of our most popular sites

@Jin One day, the programmers will be outnumbered. And they will rue the day they called us a self-help group when Joel is asking on TWP, "How do I deal with the fact that my community of brilliant programmers has turned in to the cesspool it was intended to replace?"

@Shog9 maybe, but compared to only 10% rejection from Programmers to SO, it raises concerns. Current feeling tilts to keep it "mod-controlled" for a while...
@gnat I agree with this assessment. I wouldn't feel comfortable taking Workplace migrations out of the moderators hands right now. Perhaps if it only presented itself as a valid migration path for users who are high reputation to the target site? — maple_shaft 5 hours ago
