Here's some really nice editing tips that I discovered:

A: Are capital-fixing edits necessaries in question titles?

Robert CartainoThe "avoid trivial edits" prohibition is designed to keep otherwise well-meaning user from annoying everyone with endless, overly-pedantic changes that bump every post with trivial "activity." It's a bit user-hostile to have someone micro-editing every post; so we ask that most punctuation and se...

Since we're looking to grow our site, these tips apply to us as well.

@jmort253 First she got a warning that she had already answered the question. Second there was a post by a new user the same day a bit before hglems. The scarier thing is htat now pretty much anyone can change any answer.

@Chad At the time, when I reviewed the answers, I saw a post from a new user that was posted an hour after the one HGLEM made. Perhaps there was another post made prior to HGLEM's, but according to the history it was her post that kicked everything into CW mode.
At any rate, we've rectified the situation and removed the CW status from all of the answers, added the "needs explanation" post notice, and left the post auto-protected from users who have not earned at least 10 rep on the site.

I -- and I assume others -- have reviewed the answers and looked for extremely low quality posts. We scaled down HGLEM's posts into one. So overall I consider this to be a success. Hope this helps.

Q: How can a manager detect and prevent an attempt to oust him/her?

Deer HunterA person versed in office politics, working as direct reports to a manager, succeeds in convincing higher management/owners that the present manager is somehow not fit for the job, and needs replacement from within the firm. What can an ousted manager do to detect and, possibly, prevent the pers...

I just edited this post to try and focus it more.

Q: Tackling interview question: why did you leave your last job?

freshgradI was at my first job after graduating from university for 6 months. It was close to my dream job, but I met with issues that made me really confused in the workplace and found it difficult to work productively. I became from hopeful to unhappy and insecure. So I tendered resignation after 6month...

@jmort253 The problem is split between two issues, people finding new reasons not to like the question, and people who rememeber the old versions still sticking to their guns that its off topic despite the massive rewrite. I agree it's now on topic, but its still hoarding close votes in its third revision

Q: How does vesting in equity generally work?

John DoeWhen I joined a start-up 8 months ago, I was offered a 2.5% equity along with a fixed remuneration. I trusted the founder and didn't bother to ask for equity docs. After 6 months, there were some arguments between me and the founder based on location constraints (Initially I was given a freedom t...

Hi, and welcome to The Workplace. I'm sorry this happened to you but what is your question here? This has received downvotes and was closed because it reads like a big rant and you don't really have a question which can be answered. Are you asking, "should I quit?" - if so, these sorts of questions are generally off topic as per the FAQ. — enderland 3 mins ago
what a trainwreck of a question

Q: Management are demanding my commitment or else I will be fired. How can I handle it?

BVRI have been working for an Indian outsourcing organization for more than 5 years. My aspiration is to work in the USA. I have valid work permit to work in USA which will expire after 6 months. I have requested my management to provide onsite opportunity. They don't have USA opportunities where my...

Hi community
May I know the reasons for downvotes and close votes

@enderland I made an edit to that question because the question of how should I prepare for the meeting with the manager is probably an important question
@BVR Your question is not very coherant, in that I find it difficult to understand what exactly you are asking. It sounds like you are unhappy with your situation and want to tell us about it and have people say you are right your situation sucks. But that is not considered a constructive question here
What are they asking you to do exactly? What is your goal?

BVR
@Chad: I put my best efforts and take one week time to review and edit question. I am not sure how else I make you guys feel it constructive

@BVR That's ok, we can help you refine it if you help explain the underlying issue to us in here, as chad says, What is your goal, what are they asking you to do?

@BVR Do they want you to sign a new contract?

@BVR I edited your question some based on what I think you are asking
@BVR also, it sounds like you are really in a difficult situatino

My goal is, giving commitments which I can keep and keep those committments
I would like to maintain those values

You could choose to stay there and keep that committment
even if somethin gelse comes up

BVR
Decision was made and I am staying here
However In the past 2 situations occur
Situation No1: My management creates situation which is exactly below

You are not that victim there. They are asking you to commit to finishing the project. You tell potential employers the first day I will be avialable after is day X and you do not even entertain offers before that day.

@BVR how much money do you have saved? do you have enough saved you COULD spend several months without income?

BVR
Currently we won't have opportunity that you looking for. We won't release you to the place in the organization where the opportunities which you want. We want your 6 months commitment. Other wise you will get fired

3:10 PM
@BVR is that a direct quote?

@enderland ooh yeah thats important to take into consideration, to clrify, we arent looking for the numerical value, just a 'yes or no' answer from you if you have enough to be fine unemployed for a few months

BVR
No

these sorts of situations are why I think it's really important to have money saved so you can avoid a "I need a job at all times or I don't eat" problem

@BVR So you have to make the choice to either commit and stay or to risk being fired

BVR
Here opportunity I want is working opportunity at USA. I have VALID work permit(VISA). After 6 months It will get expire. Again have to apply new VISA and new workpermit will take time. And as VISA process make stingent, I might not get also
So I feel my aspiration is under risk
If I don't commit, I will get fired. If I commit my aspiration is under risk
How can I handle situation effective? I want win-win move here. How can I make?
@enderland: It is not direct statement

3:17 PM
in unrelated news, i just guessed a zip file password on my second try (???)

@enderland nice! i just facepalmed over this admin password to a very important server being 1 character long...

BVR
@chad: Yes, I have to make the situation to commit and stay and risk to be fired

errr wait it lets you unzip a file even if you have a wrong password? wat. just leaves everything as 0kb? lol

@BVR if you were fired, would you be able to look after yourself until you found a new job?

@BVR That is not a decision we can make for you.

BVR
3:19 PM
No. It is very risky

The only way to avoid the every time is not to have a job.
I suspect most of us have had to make a decision we did not want to make at some point in our careers

@Chad woohoo i avoid this for still being new in workplace scenarios xD

@BVR what percentage of your income can you save? I think, given what I know of your situatino, I would basically say you should stay at your current job while saving as much as you possibly can
the purpose of saving is so that if you need to quit you do not absolutely HAVE to have another job immediatley
without some savings (6 months living expenses is probably ideal, but this is hard to get immediately) you are basically at the mercy of whatever your current employer is
I intend to keep a minimum of 6 months expenses at nearly all tmes, because I NEVER want to be in a situatino where I have to keep a terrible job because I need the income or won't be able to pay rent

BVR
@RhysW: Getting fired is very risky. If that is the case in India we don't have any social security and also many organizations will avoid to hire fired candidates.
@chad: I am not asking and also not expecting from you guys make decision behalf of me

@BVR Then what is it you want us to do?

3:30 PM
@Chad heh I'm actually pondering taking a job I don't really want for about 6 months for purposes of "checking that box" for my future career.... not sure how I feel about that yet :)

BVR
I am asking your help how to make best decision here or how to cope up the situation
@enderland: In India, organisations doesn't come forward to hire fired candidate. That is my biggest problem. In that case I have to hide the truth. It is again I don't want. I don't want to lie

Then it seems your choices are move to US where that is not a problem or stay in india take the commitment and lose your visa status.
That is not a decision we can make or help you make.

@BVR my thought, given all our conversations, is that the only way your conscience will be happy is if you take the 6 month commitment and do it
you seem to really care about telling the truth and not going back on your word

The time to ask the question was before the company took the stand of take our offer or be fired. They have already drawn their line in the sand. The only thing left is for you to make the decision
We can help you all day long in chat but we can not fix your question

BVR
OK
Now management gave message give commitment or you will get fired. Is it fair?
I make commitment since I have to save my job. Now I got another opportunity. If I break the commitment , will it be unfair?

3:54 PM
@Chad I think the discussion on "ask a lawyer" will be similiar to the, "are questinos where "ask your boss" is a legitimate answer good questions?"

@BVR Is it fair no... but life is rarely fair

4:23 PM
@enderland My point for that is the same if all you have to add is ask a laywer then you should not be posting an answer.

well right. same with, "talk to HR" - normally this can be an answer because HR generally does similar things at most companies

Sometimes though that is the proper step. When I refer to HR I try to inlcude those things they should prepare beofre the talk thoughl

@Chad Right- that's my point, too, sometimes the proper step/answer is talk with a lawyer, HR, your boss, etc

No the proper step is prepare for a discussion with a lawyer... then have the discussion with the lawyer we can help with the prepare step many times

@Chad details, details... wait, that's exactly what you mean :P

Q: How to effectively deal with interview rejection?

happybuddhaI am asking here so I can know of how most professionals deal with this. If there is no substantial Dunning–Kruger effect and one knows he is good at what he does (may not be the best, but better than most) and is rejected in interviews which did not even explore/interview all of the persons skil...

Completely off topic might as well ask what do you do after you get off work at night
I edited that question though because I think how do you prepare for a meeting with you manager involving a hostile coworker is a good question

Q: How do I prepare for a meeting with a senior manager about a conflict with my manager?

Juan HernandezI have spent all my professional life working as developer (not very long, like 5 years) and during that time I have been a hard working person (or at least I consider myself). Q: Great CEO with horrible management style

Chris BrinkI'm a relatively inexperienced HR professional. I've been with my organization for 1 year and have a situation that I feel very positive about, but am unclear about my next steps. Here is a little history. Our CEO is a very good person with very poor people/ management skills. He uses "machine...

interesting title

7:56 PM
I think that I just hate our users now
@enderland I think its gotta be fake... There has been only 2 people fired in the last 2 years; 1 for theft and 1 for poor performance; and both were allowed to work until they found another position.

I think it's funny to have a "great CEO" who has a "horrible management style" in what appears to be a small compnay

8:20 PM
@Chad I've been in situations like this (and may or may not be in a similar situation now), enough to know while this might be a fake, there are some crazy CEO/small company situations out there for realz.

Q: Employment vs Sole Trading - UK

flemIn the UK, is it possible to be in full time employment and be a sole trader at the same time? i.e. Work a full time job as an employee. Do contract work as a sole trader on evenings and weekends. Similarly, is it possible to run a private limited company and be in full time employment and/or s...

I am not familiar enough with the UK to know whether or not this question is appropriate
