@gnat Yeah, I would have approved that. Some people take the "too minor" thing too seriously. Unless it leaves obvious problems in the post it was a helpful edit (and this one does'nt seem to have left anything that bad)
@BenBrocka I see thanks. Will likely return and repeat this edit after I get sufficient rep to do it without review :) - unless of course someone else does it before
@gnat That one was at least correcting problems. I see alot that seem to be I just want to get credit for making an edit and did not actually improve anything
This question looks like it is going to be one of those that gets voted to close, then voted to reopen, then probably voted to close again. Why not sort it out here? The arguments seem to be:
It's vague, not being very specific about the diversity programs it is talking about
The general useful...
@Chad though i agree generally, your particular example edit doesn't look particularly convincing: I checked editor rep and there was no "credit" there (those with privileges to bypass queue don't get +2).
@BenBrocka The question boils down to lets have a discussion about the effectiveness of diversity programs. That is not constructive even if they want to reopen it.
@YannisRizos they will, but the budget is probably more limited. Need a solid plan + community acceptance for an event on any site before they'll do it, though — Rarity1 min ago
@BenBrocka I remember events being shot down in other betas, because they were betas...
@YannisRizos Contests seem like a dumb idea unless it's something based around some current event like new games/devices. I can't really think of a useful contest here, I'd prefer some other sort of event
Suppose I'm going to take part in a pissing contest (for men) and really want to win.

Ballistics is for projectiles, so guess not really relevant in this case.
I recently decided to go on a job hunt and I have approached severel companies and got accepted for severel places and was offered a working contract.
Eventually, I decided on which job offer to take, but how do I turn down the other places down in a way which might lead to 'business in the futu...

We currently have the tags salary money payment pay benefits expenses and raise.
That's really too many tags, and many are being used interchangably. I initially intended "salary" to refer to issues specific to salaried payments, as opposed to hourly payments, but that just hasn't happened.

I am in HENAC (please read what we are about before you answer) and the company I am interested in is coming to our meeting, looking for candidates - because they specifically have to hire a certain number of Hispanics.
Is it better to accept/ apply outside of HENAC where they do not know if I f...
@Chad No its not, one is asking about the benefits of diversity in the workplace, and the other is looking at the effects diversity programs have on the workplace
@Chad Guess I'll just agree to disagree with you then :)
I guess I don't see how a question about Diversity is the same as a question about Diversity Programs. A workplace can say "lets find out what benefits we would get from hiring a more diverse group of people", or they could say "lets find out if implementing diversity programs to get our different groups of employees to interact with each other more actually has any benefit", and those are two very different questions
I made an edit to get rid of the negative slant that was designed to get a specific answer(no). I have less of a problem with it but I refuse to remove the downvote
I also opened it up to a generic evidence as opposed to specifing research.
@Chad I like that you opened it up to generic evidence, however I think the OP was specifically trying to figure out if diversity programs actually had a negative impact or not by stereotyping the individual groups
@Chad that's the the way I read it. I saw the OP thinking they might have a negative impact on the groups, and wanted to find support to agree with him
or at least that they created more problems than they were worth. If that is true then this question should be open to answers that would confirm his worldview
@Rachel lol you hug trees on your walk home from work at night?
Honestly, I've often wondered if our extreme focus on anti-discrimination actually leads to more problems. For example, women in the workplace. If you categorize people as male and female, and strive to have a 50/50 ratio, aren't you discriminating based on gender?
Wouldn't it be better to just pick the best person for the job? Not the "best woman for the job because we only have 25% women already"?
@Chad I am an optimist, yes :) I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and read the question between the lines regardless of their reasons for asking
@Rachel That was my point I agreed with the basic premise he was trying to get at but the way he was asking it was the problem. He was not trying to ask a question but start a discussion which is a problem.
LOL I can remove my downvote its a wiki question now
@orange Fact: In advance of the Windows 8 launch, iOS is the best mobile operating system in the world. // However, I think that iOS leaves a lot to be desired in the way of multi-tasking, performance, stability, and programming API. That gives Microsoft an opportunity.
Well there are two sides one from the user side and one from the developer side,What would you think would be more fun developing apps for windows or using apps in windows.
@Chad Can you explain why its bad? I actually expected the edit to sit at pending and have someone else approve it. I was surprised the edit took effect immediately (noticed later it was a community wiki)
First it was asking for research which we really do not need. Evidence works fine. Second it is a political football. We should stay away from political footballs here at the workplace
@Chad I can understand removing the "research" bit, but what is bad about asking if Diversity Programs have a negative effect because they highlight the differences between employees?
From the original version of the question: "Do these programs re-enforcing that there is a social structure with us vs. them based on race and limit hiring based on skin color or ethnicity?"
The question wasn't about the "effect [these programs have on the] diversity in a business" though. Its about if the programs makes problems worse or not by highlighting the differences
@Rachel I simplified the second line to just wondering if it has any effects. guiding people to an answer is the problem I had with the original question.
@Rachel But the edit to company culture I do like.
"Does all this discrimination awareness actually lead to less discrimination? For example, if a company strives to have an equal workforce of males and females, it seems like there's a higher chance they'll higher a less-qualified female over a more-qualified male if their work force is only 10% female in the first place."
The point is, the purpose of these diversity programs is to try and bring together people of different groups, whether that be grouped by gender, race, religion, whatever
@Chad A more appropriate comparism would be like someone asking "Did slavery really lead to X", and someone changing the question to "What did slavery lead to?"
@Rachel Same here. I was briefly tempted until I realized the newest macbook air was a downgrade from my 4 year old tablet PC...and also not a tablet PC. Plus I can't build an epic gaming rig Mac (and if I could, what would I play?)
I don't think that "encourage diversity" is meaningful enough to be in the core question.
and so it either needs clarification, or a suggestion of two different sides to the issue
otherwise no one knows how to answer that question
I'm all for a simplified version of the question, which is what I tried to do. However, you still disapproved of my edits, and yet I think what you've edited it to is clearly more amibiguous
so I think considering that it's back to that AND also just asking about "effects" (in general) there is no way to answer it
I was borderline when there was a specific question... I.E. Do these programs have unintended negative effects (furthering cultural divisions) or do they have positive workplace impacts
removed the plea for research studies. You shouldn't ask experts to send you away to other sites or resources. Instead, ask the experts here for the answers to your questions. ;)
Playing devils advocate here because i agree with you(I have voted to close and down voted just trying to put lipstick on this pig): You could have evidence from experiences at your workplace.
that is not research
and actually more likely to provide an answer to that question.
<===== thinks the whole quesiton is just a discussion waiting to happen
@Rachel Like @Rachel said, "That's like asking "Does effect X actually occur with Y" and someone modifying the question to read "What effects occur with Y""
@Chad: Why do you feel compelled to make an edit that yields such an amorphous question?
@Chad I get the feeling that you: 1) Fashion yourself as a de facto moderator. 2) Convince yourself about the suitability of question and steel yourself against any and all logic which might run contrary to your first position.
@Chad: And then you use hard language like "this question sucks" or "your question is crap". @Chad: It's awfully easy to sound tough behind a keyboard. Why not participate more constructively?
@JimG. I don't think it's a choice, you have one parent user for chat and that sets your name.
And I agree, let's not talk about who-did-what.
Let's talk about what can constructively be done to the question. I think it's not working right now, so I'd encourage close votes until it can reach a better state.
I really don't think that's going to happen, but I'd be in favor of closing it until it reaches a better state rather than playing ping pong with an open question
