For character creation, do we want to do point-buy or dice?
what's point-buy?
You get like 18 points or something, put them how you want (fallout style)
oh
Except higher stats cost more points rather than a flat amount each time.
I'm kinda partial to dice
00:48
The advantage of point-buy is that you don't get screwed by RNG.
The disadvantage of point-buy is that you don't get blessed by RNG.
RNG never blesses only takes
I dunno I've had really good RNG lately
Roll for @John's luck
> 19
I've gotten a 17/16/18/16/20/17 cleric before.
00:50
@Unionhawk I told you
01:14
@Yuuki wow
i'm partial to point buy
or score array
24
Q: Is it better to take the array and be Joe Average, or to roll for the odds of getting on average better scores?

John RobertsonI am new to D&D. I was looking at character creation for D&D 5th edition. There were a few ways one could generate ability scores. I assumed the optional method of taking the numbers 15,14,13,12,10,8 would be at least as good as the default chance method (roll 4d6, drop lowest die), and more like...

@GodEmperorDune It was a bit odd, but my DM allowed us to roll one 4d5 stat just so we had a chance at hitting 20 for our mainstat.
Everyone hated me so much that session.
I feel like point-buy or score array would be best for us though.
That way, everyone has roughly equal characters and there's no cheating/fudging dice rolls (not that anyone would do that...)
I think the platform does dice or something?
OR WE COULD TTS THIS STUFF
(no)
yeah roll20 does dice and the roll is saved into history so no fudging
in a test one i set up using 4d6 drop lowest, i got two 17s
but then i rolled for starting GP and got right above minimum
Well, I guess doing it that way also lets us get used to roll20.

@GodEmperorDune Are spells not as much for combat?
@SaintWacko Spells are for in and out of the combat. It's just that arcanists have to prepare spell lists at the beginning of the day.
Which means they can't focus all their spells on combat otherwise they might be useless for some encounters.
D&D magic has two forms: spontaneous and prepared.
Both types of casters have a certain number of spells they can cast per day.
However, prepared-type casters have to prepare specific spells at the beginning of the day. In return, they usually have a larger number of spells they can cast every day.
Spontaneous-type casters on the other hand, can cast any spell that they know at any time so long as they still have enough "spells per day" in the bank. In return, they usually can't cast as many spells as a prepared-type.
Hmm, so it's not like a mana thing that regenerates?
Nope.
Also, are we playing today?
No, I think we're just doing character creation and testing out roll20 at the same time.
Ah, arcanists look to be a wizard/sorcerer hybrid. They still have to prepare specific spells beforehand, but the specific spell isn't used up when cast (although "spells per day" is still used up).
Prepared magic is a bit complicated for newbies, which is why I suggest sorcerer or another spontaneous-type if you want to do magic.
Oooo, Savant looks interesting if only requiring a lot of work.
I think it looks a bit complicated for now, I might just stick with factotum.
15:13
if we have enough time, a sample combat might make sense to do
but either way i am super hyped
15:48
Oh wait, I need to get Mumble, right?
Yes probably
Do we have a server?
Also, wait, I have shit going on anyway
16:25
@Yuuki Yeah, it's sounding like I should avoid the magic classes for a first time
@SaintWacko Spontaneous-types are fairly simple though.
16:43
@SaintWacko we'll help you out with all the how to play type stuff
Alright, thanks :)
the important thing is to play something you'll have fun with, not just what is easy or hard
17:02
It's in 1 hour I think
confirmed that i am crazy
I don't think I'll be able to join for today's character creation session, so maybe during this next week I could get some help with that?
LadyWacko has also played D&D, so she'll be able to help me out, too
Sure, that's fine
I'm getting some tracking stuff set up on my end

I was going to jump into today's stuff but I just spent 3 hours wandering between getting breakfast and groceries so I am tired so I think I am going to grab a shower and then hold really really still for a bit
No worries, I think we were just going to do group character creation today
18:03
Alright!
Who's around?
(raises hand)
Do we have a Mumble server?
Origami runs one once in a while, we could ask him
but
I thought roll20 could handle voice?
Can it? I did not know this.
I think you have to sign in for that
18:05
me
roll20 does voice, according to their docs
Anyone with experience wanna make a roll20 game or should I?
if we're going to do sheets and stuff it should be the GM
so its all in one place
Who wants to DM?
i think @twobugs is DM
I was going to try DMing. Playing with rolld20 now
18:10
I just had Python choose a random name from a list and it chose @twobugs too.
It's official now.
This looks quite useful (rolld20)
Yeah @Pip said it was good
Okay, here's a basic game using one of the predefined modules if anyone wants to try joining
18:26
it's giving me a 5 minute tutorial vid since it's the first time I've joined a game
It gave me a 12 minute tutorial :P

1 hour later…
19:52
here's the tutorial game

@GodEmperorDune Thanks! I'll definitely check this out and some more DM tools
20:39
there should be a /tutorial after editor
not sure why i fail at copy paste

2 hours later…

Thought: Use old-school gaming sprites for tokens instead.

23:17
Okay, I'm going through the character creation, I think I have a bit of a handle on it.
We definitely need to schedule a session for this since the character sheet is a bit complicated.
Yeah I agree
The formulas are powerful but a pain to get right
23:42
Using gaming sprites would be tremendously appropriate for us though.
