Is this a "choose one" or checklist sort of thing?
You can do either, really.
It's just to see what types of games people want to play
Some people really like conflict between party members to drive the story, whereas others don't
user15026
I don't like interparty conflict but that's more because I had issues with my group using that as a way to resolve their relationship issues (they wanted to date, were too nervous irl, so used character conflict to work out some stuff around that)
user15026
(Needless to say the group didn't last long)
At least none of us (probably) want to date (I hope)
>_>
user15026
01:23
My dance card is full in that respect :P
01:52
Save the drama for the bridge proper, where it belongs
Well, I'm flexible.
I picked stuff that I felt would work for a mix of experienced and first time players, but really meant it as a starting point
So, recursing is probably off the table then

13:54
So I think we should do a character building session either today or tomorrow.
Or did we already schedule one for tomorrow.
?
14:05
I don't think either is scheduled, but I agree

sounds good to me
Always make sure your party has: A rope. A light source. Some water. A container (vial, small box, empty keg, whatever). A means to start a fire.
A tool is usually good too, such as a crowbar/prybar
@MadMAxJr ah, such ripe joke material
Well no, that's actually handy stuff.
@MadMAxJr i meant more along the lines of "well such and such is a tool"
user15026
What time tomorrow? (I forgot about it, so I need to make sure I am awake and not like getting groceries then or something)
16:07
> 11p/12m/1c/2e on Sunday
user15026
Oh, okay. If I'm not awake by two I have bigger issues :P
as an fyi, best prep for building a character is to think about what you want your character to be good at
Doesn't hurt to have an idea what other players are trying to make too.
user15026
I will start thinking about that between calls and ladder training (I don't know why I need ladder training)
If you have a party full of specialists, you could be in for a bad time.
16:11
@MadMAxJr most important rule is to have fun
party balance comes second
At least one person should be able to heal and at least one should be able to hit more than one target with something.
@MadMAxJr those make it much easier, but it is not impossible to play without them
16:44
i just tehn through the roll20.net tutorial. the tool is pretty comprehensive
If you're using the on-board PF sheets, they can be a little tricky at firt..
first
17:24
@GodEmperorDune Yeah. Figure out what you want to do, and how to do it.
Focus more on archetypes
How do you want to kill? Punch? Sword? Magic? Talk?
Sneak? Arrow?
Having a person good at non-combat is always a plus. Usually the heavy skill characters like rogues take that up.
party face is also good, for someone charisma based
because without diplomacy, your shit will get rekt
Unless you wreck them first.
Also, anyone considering Barbarian, I would recommend the Unchained Barbarian. Sort of a barb 1.5 patch

1 hour later…
18:45
@MadMAxJr I think I'm going factotum so I can be the generalist.
user15026
I like the idea of playing someone who tries to just like...charm their way out of things
user15026
(and then hit them if that doesn't work :P)
@AshleyNunn like talk your way out of it or magically compel others to do your bidding?
user15026
Haha like talk my way out (forgot about the other way)
@AshleyNunn you might like a swashbuckler
> Combining fancy footwork with quick and precise lunges, swashbucklers dart in and out of battle, harassing and thwarting their opponents. These fast and agile combatants serve as protectors for spellcasters and flank mates for rogues and slayers, while waiting for the opportunity to show panache and score the killing blow on some lumbering hulk. Swashbucklers often face death with wry humor, mocking it with jabbing wit.
clerics can also do that, but go more magical
> More than capable of upholding the honor of their deities in battle, clerics often prove stalwart and capable combatants. Their true strength lies in their capability to draw upon the power of their deities, whether to increase their own and their allies' prowess in battle, to vex their foes with divine magic, or to lend healing to companions in need. As their powers are influenced by their faith, all clerics must focus their worship upon a divine source.
and there is always the bard
> Bards capably confuse and confound their foes while inspiring their allies to ever-greater daring. While accomplished with both weapons and magic, the true strength of bards lies outside melee, where they can support their companions and undermine their foes without fear of interruptions to their performances.
19:10
Sorceror might also be good since they scale with Charisma.
very true
but they tend to be physically frail
and i assumed the hit was a physical hit
user15026
@GodEmperorDune It was :)
user15026
(aka I make a terrible pacifist sometimes)
user15026
@GodEmperorDune This sounds fun!
21:01
Swashbuckler is honestly one of my favorite classes. It's awesome.
Sorcerer is nice if you want to be a charmer since not only do they scale to Charisma, they get access to spells to help you. And Fireballs to the face when negotiations turn... aggressive.
21:22
spellcasting can be a bit more complex for a new player
Sorcerer is easier though since they don't plan their spells out at the beginning of the day.
true
i'm sure someone will want to bring the AOE dps
@AshleyNunn That was me. I was playing a cleric once and my backstory had me being a pacifist.
I ended up doing the most damage and having the most kills that campaign.
you tracked damage and kills?
also was it an undead-heavy campaign?
Sorta eyeballing it.
@GodEmperorDune Not at all.
21:25
nice
It helped that my god's favored weapon was the double-bladed sword.
And this was the goddess of love and healing.
speaking of deities, are we using the official pathfinder ones or some other set?
hi @John
hiya
i made an exec decision to go with pathfinder
21:33
sounds good to me
let me pull some of the more interesting stuff from transcript

Who prepares the story?
The GM prepares the overall shape of the story, linear or branching; players run their characters through these events. The GM gives hints to provide direction.

The players’ roles are to set goals for their characters, and pursue them proactively.

Player characters are expected to work together; conflicts between them are mostly for show.

Doing the smartest thing for your character’s survival sometimes isn’t as important as other choices.

The GM’s role regarding the rules is ignore them when they conflict with what “should” happen, based either on realism, the se

if we have a lot of people interested who can't always make it, we can do a "adventurers for hire" type of setting. All the characters are part of some larger guild, each session is an encapsulated mission, whoever is available that day goes on the mission
@GodEmperorDune I think most people were in favor of that
yep yep
so we're starting to figure out characters
21:41
hmm
so think about what type of stuff you want your character to be good at and we can recommend some classes
4 hours ago, by two bugs
How do you want to kill? Punch? Sword? Magic? Talk?
magic
I seem to do well as a healer in most games
sit behind people and make sure they don't die
that kind of thing
cool
your standard healers are clerics
21:43
can they magic stuff to death, too?
depending on how you want to specialize, definitely
cool
I'll probably go with that then
lol, i'm too slow at listing other options
pallies can heal as well
and pathfinder also has the oracle
which can specialize to heal as well
but lean much more magic heavy than clerics, which are magic + melee fighting
so far we have @john as a healer, @AshleyNunn as a swashbuckler, @Yuuki as a factotum, @Unionhawk as TBD, @SaintWacko as TBD, and myself as TBD
What would you recommend for someone who has never played before?

How do you want to kill? Punch? Sword? Magic? Talk?
21:54
If we are doing this thing tomorrow then I am currently out
Oh, sorry, didn't see that discussion
@Unionhawk no worries, you can hop on the next week session
@SaintWacko definitely not a problem
Hmm, Arcanist, Swashbuckler, and Investigator sound interesting
cool
so your arcanist will cast spells, lots of them
swashbuckler and investigator are much more in the thick of the combat
A time mystery oracle looks cool
22:04
@John yeah those abilities are pretty cool
I think I wanna be a time mystery elf oracle
@John do eeet!
so i half rolled a healer in case we need it, now to make some tanks
22:20
@John the next decisions you should make are which oracle curse you'll get, followed by which of the oracle spells you'll know
Clouded vision isn't bad if you're playing a race that doesn't get Darkvision.
22:35
Being a child oracle seems interesting
22:49
I wonder if I can argue for getting the chameleon's aptitude focus for my empty 18th level.
Though I don't really wanna play up to that level.
