Would a question about a smartphone controlled garage door opener be on-topic here?

I can see the answer being 'no', as it is a garage door opener.

But on the other hand, I have a basic list or requirements, it is controlled by a smartphone, and I am sure other people have looked into it before me.

I know this falls into the big "What is hardware?" question we have been struggling with. Maybe I should just ask it and see what happens.

I am of the opinion to ask and see what happens. It's still private beta and we need to work out what is and isn't on topic.
