@Zizouz212 Yep. I got back 5 hours late.

@HDE226868 well it hasn't failed in 5 hours yet :P

@enderland Groan. My last beta was Open Science, so failure is not something I want to think about right now.
Failure is not an option!

@HDE226868 I hope this site sticks around, I think it'd be a really good thing for me personally (not to mention others)

@enderland I think it will turn out to be really useful.

I hope so

Q: Vote Early, Vote Often!

HDE 226868Note: This post is (nearly) identical to this one on Mythology Stack Exchange I would like to echo a post that Scott Morrison made on Meta.Tex.SE: I'm a moderator from MathOverflow, and this "question" is actually unsolicited advice, based on our experience from the initial launch of MathOve...

Q: Are questions about physically building computers allowed?

AdamI ran into a question asking about, basically, where to put a piece of hardware and not about what hardware to get. Is this acceptable? I don't think this kind of question can be diverted to Superuser since it isn't asking about how a technology works or anything like that.

I hope this site sticks around and succeeds! I always wanted one like it. Having said that, my main worry is that there's just too much breadth to the topic that we wouldn't have enough experts for more rare/specialized topics.

@DVK I hope this site succeeds too :) I agree that we might not have enough experts, which could lead to an unanswered questions problem.

DVK
@Gilles - I think the question feeds might be lagging. the last question I saw on the site (power converters) is not posted here yet.

2:09 AM
@DVK only featured questions from the main site are set up in the chat feeds

Q: How broad can questions be?

Red ShiftThere may be value in limiting the breadth of questions asked. For example, if I was to ask the question What components should I use to build a quality workstation for under $3000?, there are lots of components and hence individual part recommendations that need to be made. An answer to such a q...

Q: Are "does 'x' meet these criteria" questions allowed?

UndoPrompted by this question, should we allow questions that lay out a set of requirements and then ask if a specific piece of hardware fits them?

8:17 AM
@DVK I only set up feeds for meta questions and bountied questions. I don't think a feed of all main site questions is useful. We did that on Science Fiction & Fantasy, but that was back in the day when there was no live refresh. Now you can just keep the main page open if you want to see new questions instantly, so the chat feed isn't so useful.
We can have an all-questions feed if the community here wants it, but I don't think I've seen that on any site that was created after live sockets

@Gilles Nope, bountied is actually better. I was merely submitting what I percieved as a bug report :)

Q: What type of hardware is allowed?

enderlandI have asked this question: Standing desk with ability to raise/lower? It is receiving a few close votes for "not about computing hardware." A key thing this site will need to determine is what the scope of "hardware" is, right now there are questions about: Computers Audio equipment Headphon...

Scope for this site is going to be interesting...

Franck DernoncourtPrices may vary depending on the location. Should questions conditioned on price include the location? (e.g. What's a good non-iPhone smartphone that's reasonably priced and specced?)

A: What is required for an answer to be 'high quality'?

Undo Note that this answer is community wiki so everyone can edit it. Please, propose your changes in a comment or another answer so they can be more easily discussed. Ideally, this is only a start, with improvements from the community over the next few weeks. Copied from http://meta.softwarer...

Feedback very much encouraged.

@Undo I was going to ask in here but a comment on the question is better. I'm pretty much just wondering how it's done on SR
heavily increased moderator duties?

@JohnB I delete a ton of stuff
the others do too
Anything that is low quality, I delete and leave this comment:

is there a grace period of "fix this please or we'll delete it" or is it delete-on-sight?

> I'm deleting this because it isn't as high-quality as we prefer here. Please, feel free to post a new answer after you read and incorporate the answer guidelines. You should have some experience using the software. What exactly did you like about it, and what did you not like as much? How does the software match each requirement in the question? Thanks!
@JohnB Delete on sight

gotcha

5:09 PM
I've tried a grace period thing before but it's too much to keep track of at any scale.

understandably

Better IME to have them edit and flag or post a new answer.
Some perspective - overall, I've deleted >450 posts on SR. And I really never delete questions.
Comes out to a little under one per day.
And that's just me :P

Yeah that's quite a bit. I'm at 311 on GD, but that's over two years and some change

I would suspect that moderators here will be appointed relatively quickly, like they did with SR.
Public beta started 2/18, Gilles and I were appointed 2/21 with Journeyman on 2/22. I think that's a record.
Although I'm seeing less CM involvement so far here than usual, so it'll be interesting.

I think this closed beta has a large number of moderators (from other sites) too

5:19 PM
I count 9/45 on the first page alone

yeah, I was going to say 7/20 of the top 4 rows

I think there's probably a lot less activity than they'd like to see.
day 2 and nobody above 400 rep? eesh

Less voting, yeah
But fifty questions <24 hours in isn't bad

I feel like a lot of questions are "meh" questions

The issue is that people probably don't really want to vote on answers for something they've never seen
It's not like a knowledge-based site where I can look at something and say "that's right" without having to go buy something.
In most cases.

5:21 PM
Can someone really be a "hardware expert" ? it seems like most would be enthusiasts
But then again, same with Software Recs

Yep

true. I'm happy to vote up a well structured question but reluctant to vote on an answer if I don't know the subject matter. But that would change if it's a very well written answer and already has votes (or is accepted)

Q: What is required for an answer to be 'high quality'?

UndoSeeing +15/-0 consensus on Should we have SR-style quality guidelines for questions and answers?, I would say it's time to figure out what we require in answers. What is required for an answer to be 'high quality'? What do we do with answers that aren't high quality?

slowpoke

slow day for Mr. Bot

5:23 PM
First thing we need to figure out is question scope
Are monitor stands on topic? Sewing machines? Desk chairs?

@Undo well I got one of the main things I wanted to know, in an answer from @JohnB :P

there's a 90% chance I'll buy that desk this month, otherwise it'll be a 95% chance next month :)

I'm working from home off a kitchen table today. I have had standing desks for a while at work, but not now, and I miss them...
but that's too much $$$ :P

Just get some sawhorses, a piece of plywood, and a few 2-ton shop jacks :P

hehe

yay, first silver badge is mine >:D

Q: SSD for laptop - price, speed, etc

MoosemanI am looking at various SSD's for my laptop. For normal use (I just want Windows to start up more quickly), what is recommended? I want to get something cheap, but not unreliable. Thank you!

sigh

Q: Should we use: [GPU], [Graphics-Card], or [Video-Card]?

GramAs most gaming (or graphics editing work) towers contain some sort of graphics processing unit and they can be fairly pricey I suspect there will be several questions about them. Current Options: [GPU] (Graphics Procsessing Unit) [Graphics-Card] or [GraphicsCard] [Video-Card] or [VideoCard] ...

Q: Keyboard for programmers?

UndoI'd like to invest in a new keyboard - I've been typing on a MacBook Pro keyboard forever and, while I love it, it's time for something new and slightly more ergonomic. Requirements: Must play nice with my 2012 MacBook Pro Must not slide around too easily, that's my pet peeve with keyboards M...

@ArtOfCode I asked a question in a comment to your answer I shouldn't have done that sorry. Basically I was wondering if the PS4 HDD/SSD filesystem used makes a difference as I think it was a thing back in the PS3 days.

@Gram I don't actually know much about PS filesystems, sorry!

oh ok, I will remove the comment

9:21 PM
@ArtOfCode I did not downvote your answer BTW, however from Firepower0701's post about SSD I wonder. As I thought SSD's are less reliable, is that not true?

@Gram HDDs are more reliable when in idle mode. SSDs are less reliable. SSDs store data with electronic circuits and logic gates, which are prone to damage. HDDs use magnetic storage platters. If the HDD is in action (reading/writing) when you drop it, you risk your data because if the read/write head touches the disk, it corrupts data. If it's in idle mode, the head is secured.
SSD circuits are prone to damage whenever you drop them, not only sometimes.

wow there is a lot more to harddrives then I suspected. Thanks :)

The R/W head on a HDD will eventually wear out, as will the actuator axis - being both moving parts. But SSDs have limited reads/writes too, and sectors are more commonly corrupted in SSDs (which ends up with your hard drive steadily shrinking as sectors corrupt and the controller marking them dead and unusable)

Sounds good to me +1 haha

@ArtOfCode Relevant
(and kinda cool)

@Undo QWERTY/US might be worth specifying (presuming that's what you want)

@Undo Edited the relevant point to my answer, too.

Awesome

It's usb instead of bluetooth so I'm not writing it up as an answer, but I LOVE that keybaord

9:33 PM
@Undo As a programmer myself it is always worth asking if you work in cubes and your workmates are ok with some keyboard noise. :)

@Gram nah, I work at home. I'm nowhere near cubicle age.

haha Yah, I would love to work from home again. Worth the pay difference to me, I remember the SO service last year asked how many workers preferred to be in an office and it was a fairly low percentage.

@Gram I am working 2 days a week from home. ITS AWESOME
oh fine I wrote an answer since @ArtOfCode's answer is also a usb one :P
also @Undo I strongly suggest getting an ergo keyboard

@enderland Are they that much better?

if you don't believe me shake out your arms and hold your hands in front of you normally, without putting them on keys, over the keyboard

9:45 PM
Holy crap
Oooookay. Huh

then realize how your wrists are straight, not at some 30 degree angle
just do a thought exercise about how bad that is for them for hours every day...

My laptop keyboard keeps my arms/wrists/hands in a pretty straight line, actually

you must have a 22" laptop :P

15.4", I believe.

Definitely a personal thing
depends on how far away you put your laptop too
