Acting like I haven't had enough for the day, I have cracked one more open
Lets do this
@Adam I am back and had time to gather my bearings if you would like to continue where we left off

6 hours later…
08:04
@Cfinley @Adam ^ that is the reason you're both nominated to be mods.

3 hours later…

reading questions on this site is dangerous - it makes me want to buy stuff that I previously decided I didn't need or was too expensive so I can make better recommendations ;)

2 hours later…
13:40
@AdamC whispering Buy it.
13:53
dammit - 749/750 - that is so annoying
14:06
This debate on the whole durability tag is not making any progress
It seems the community itself isn't sure what to do
I did figure out why I dislike the ibility part of the tag however.
A product can have good durability or bad durability, but if it is durable, it has good durability
I think we should keep that tag - I don't expect my Nexus to be durable. I'm not using it to pound nails or anything.
Guess I'll write up my own answer sometime.
I do expect it to be reliable, meaning that when I treat it right it won't break.
But water and dust and pounding nails and such are bad for the kind of phone I want.
There are phones out there that are perfectly fine with that kind of stuff.
And some people specifically want that kind of phone, hence
I wasn't trying to start the debate back up. I was just making an observation in the question. It is almost split down the middle.
I'll just throw this in here again:
Because, sometimes, you just want to beat the hell out of your phone
@Cfinley Oh, debate is good. We have to figure these things out.
@Cfinley I argue that means keep the status quo. The tag already exists and is being used. It's not being used inappropriately - at least not according to a majority of the community.
14:15
I can see the reasons to both keep and get rid of it
If we do keep it, I just want it renamed
But, I also stick by my argument of keeping it for other reasons. If "durability" is important to the user asking for a recommendation, it needs a tag.
I have no opinion on renaming it.
@Cfinley To take the iblity off the end? I'd agree with that
But we can always do that, the tools exist.
I am writing up one more (short) answer to explain why. The question isn't "Should we delete the tag?" It is "What do we do with it?"

A: What to do with the [durability] tag?

CfinleyIf we decide to keep the tag, lets rename it to durable. Why, as they are both the same? A product can have great durability or horrible durability, but if a product is durable, then it has good durability.

Short, sweet, to the point
14:52
I think we're definitely going to need to make it clear to new users that the site is not for general hardware questions, but for recommendations. I've seen quite a few questions with general hardware related questions / problems now. It's also definitely time to get our mods so we can edit the help pages and close reasons..
@JonasCz I am hoping that SE (SO now I guess) will send out emails Monday or Tuesday. I do feel like we are being held back by not having them.
All I know is that the mods will be busy with cleanup for the first few days
eh, that sort of cleanup would be easy I think
:)
Then why don't YOU do it
After all, your mod post still has quite a few upvotes ;)
Need to answer some questions so I can at least VTC off-topic questions..
Or ask a few
We always need good example questions
15:10
@Cfinley need a computr plz!
15:45
Already had one on it
So in a few minutes we'll have close 4/6 of the most recent questions :/
16:33
@Undo You should look into Logitech's G933 Headset. It looks like it fits most of your needs, plus other cool features.
Not sure if it supports Macs however

Closed questions are not bad, as long as they are off topic

Open, off topic questions? Those are bad

So I found this old meta question on SU.
15
Q: Where to ask for computer hardware suggestions?

BGMIf I have a question about computer hardware, on which SE site should I ask it? It will involve asking for opinions. For example, "I need to purchase a computer for a conference room that will sit under the main conference table and be connected to a Control4 and a projector (for a monitor). ...

Should someone here (most likely me) post an answer on it pointing people to this site?
@Cfinley - seems like a good idea - I'm at 1500 on SU too, so you will get at least one upvote :)
We should wait until we have a mod team. They can be the ambassadors to such questions
I might play around how to word the answer on chat or in a meta question. We might be able to recycle the answer we come up with for other sites that have the same problem
And I agree Andy
Pinned the question for later
Just noticed that the question is tagged with faq
18:39
Morning, all.
Morning
day off today?
Yep. Slept in.
Noice. I stayed up WAAAAY too late last night
Hah
I'm tired
COFFEEEEE
Too bad I haven't acquired the taste for coffee yet.
Now beer on the other hand....
18:46
Good coffee is really good
I still have my sweet tooth. I need like a gallon of sugar for one cup of coffee
19:41
Let me know if I need to improve anything for my self answered question

Q: Replacement for the Logitech G9x Mouse

CfinleyI have a Logitech G9x mouse that is about to die. It has served me well, but it is time to start looking for a replacement. Unfortunately, Logitech doesn't make the G9x anymore. The replacement mouse should: be a Logitech gaming mouse (and support Logitech's Gaming Software) have customize DP...

@Cfinley Looks good to me. I personally don't think self answers need much (or anything) more than a regular answer on this site.
21:41
I wish we could just define our scope
My drinking problem might get worse ;)
You aren't that appreciated at work.
Well, I am home now...
but I am sticking to water
Ah okay. Well then by all means...
So right now the problem with deciding on the scope is that everything is scattered throughout tons of questions.
Once we get mods to edit the help pages we can work off of what is already there.
I think we could define our scope before mods get appointed
We know what is off-topic already. We have plenty of closed questions
Its just the gray area
This is the first beta that I have been apart of. How do we compare with other beta sites after they went public?
I know that we had an extended private beta, but we should still be able to look at other sites
I suggested a way to form the scope a while back. It seems it would work for us.
We start out with either something very specific and take different items to see if they fit the scope (and if we want them in the scope). If so, we expand the scope just a little.
21:56
If I am not mistaken, I upvoted that
Or we can start with a broad scope and take different items to see if they fit but we don't want them there, so we restrict the scope a little.
I like that way better
I see this as a simple step-by-step process instead of everyone throwing ideas around.
We give the topics a chance on this site first and monitor how they do
If it seems like they are headed the wrong way, remove it from the scope
Exactly. So we could begin with something like "Anything electronic."
That includes a whole lot of things we've already condemned, so we just restrict it based on those items.
22:00
I would still be interested to see how my proposal would do, but if it doesn't make the cut, I wont be (too) upset
Which one are you referring to?

A: What is Hardware?

CfinleyI agree with @Undo's answer, but want to add a bit more to the on-topic section. I think things related to hardware should also be on-topic, as long as it was specifically designed to be used with hardware. Things like monitor stands, mouse pads, smartphone cases, styluses, laptop bags, etc. Obvi...

It seems some have issues with it, but it still only has one downvote
It makes sense. I'm still not sure about the cases and bags though.
Which is fine. We can remove them if they aren't doing good, or add them later if we feel like it should be expanded.
22:16
True. We need more input on this. I feel like we're the only two on it.
I dont think we have had enough pressure to find a scope yet.
There have been only a few gray area questions. If we had more, maybe we could figure this out quicker.

@Cfinley - my gateway drug to coffee was tea (breakfast tea to those not from Ireland) - started with sugar, gradually reduced it to nothing, then reduced the milk, then started on a mild coffee
I do love hot tea
now I have opinions about roast, beans etc. - turns out to be quite expensive
Even have a hot water kettle at my desk
same thing with beer - started with light lager, now an IPA
Best investment I have made for work, besides my keyboard and mouse
Can't do IPA
can do everything else, but not IPA
There is a local brewery that has kind of like an IPA mixed with a Pale Ale which I can drink
23:31
was the same (ale yes, IPA no), until a friend introduced me to some stuff he used to order in special - he retired in his 30s thanks to the first .com boom so he had time to get that kind of thing in order
Too bad I was too young to understand what was happening at the time
that was the second .com bubble
first one ended in 2001 :)
Still tho. I wouldn't mind have 2.6 million just laying around
I was working for the company that I am pretty sure holds the record for the worst merger ever - it was horrendous
in the second one I remember corkd going for the 3-4 million range - that was less than a years work and the whole site was running on a Mac mini
That had a huge turnaround
23:41
of course, I now work for a games company where the top pro player earns 7 figures and millions watch the world finals live
hell, the esports dudes can get the same visa to the US as David Beckham did when they go to play pro League
I also never thought that being a pro gamer would earn so much
Faker is awesome though, to be fair, guy has mad skills
I do admit, they are fun to watch
and yes, I have been drinking too, or I would be keeping it on topic :)
lol, sounds like I should catch up
23:44
nearly 1am here, so I am done for the night - doing some WoW dailies so I can play for free, then bed
Well, I guess you dont have to work in the morning
nope - no weekends, and no on-call for now, so all good
Its never fun to be on-call
Enjoy the rest of your night
