In The Hobbit, the Dwarves, Bilbo and Gandalf are on a mission to rob Smaug. But why did he have so much to steal from? He's a Dragon! He is not the kind of dragon that eats gold and gems. He doesn't need wealth to buy a luxury cavern and/or pay his servant.
Why did Smaug gather his treasure?
@JonEricson the two highest-scoring answers say that, only with more information
Kevin's comment is properly a comment
@JonEricson I don't think it would be. Pre-19th-century allegory is rarely considered SF. But we do tend to be inclusive, so I say ask anyway and see if it sticks.
@Gilles I know. They are fine answers. It just struck me as a ridiculous question. (Though I suppose Milton answered "Why does Satan lie?", which is about the same thing.)
I have recently become infatuated with the scroll wheel. On Ubuntu, I can use the wheel to switch between tabs (even if the focussed window is something else). Center-clicking on any part of Totem(default movie player) pauses/plays the vid. I can minimize windows with it (click their topbar), and make them cme back (click the topbar of a fully maximised window). Perfect for watching TV and keeping a watch on chatrooms
There are actually times I wouldn't mind seeing a different skin on Physics - I mean, our default design is pretty ideal, but change is good once in a while
...come to think of it, I should resurrect my SE chat Santa hats script
@DavidZaslavsky It's not too hard to make one. I wrote an extension that replaces main.css with my own main.css (CSS overriding is confusing, so I just bypassed it). My main.css is a copy of the original, with a bunch of changes
