If it's webspace you probably know that even though it says "unlimited" it doesn't really mean unlimited. That's probably why your website shut down yesterday.

@Incurrence: Yes, but there's no such thing as unlimited space or bandwith in the world. It just means "probably more than you will ever need", but if you overuse it you'll have to explain why so they can give you more, at least in my experience

@Incurrence: If you want to make sure, you can also contact your host and tell them that you got DDoSed by some student from uni's internet, they'll contact the uni and then the uni will be more likely to act on it - in case they don't act on it now.

Interesting though, Win8 on uni PCs.

Is it? They are normally on 10, or normally on 7?

There are about 20,000 pc's on campus, so they take awhile to go through them all

Over here basically all are Linux or Win7, and there's some Macs.

Oh, my old uni was all macs, and this one is all windows 8

I personally didn't have a problem with the Win8 UI but I imagine my uni didn't update because of it.

Ahhh yeah, it was definitely strange at first, but most people liked it after awhile.

I don't know, if you can somehow get a confirmation of WW uni that it was indeed him, you could report to MSE that you feel it is not a safe environment, you can't even put a link to your own homepage on here anymore because you risk being DoSed as soon as he feels annoyed by something you do

And I actually did check my websites traffic because I did assume he would try me soon enough too

that's really not something MSE should support, so it would - imo - be a reason for some consequences

So basically I've come here with a theory and a request.

My theory: that the bot we use to scan recent pages isn't obeying (for whatever reason) the 5 second rate limit. We use the bot to pick up on new pages @AlexClark creates, so we can make sure maths.kisogo.com also has pages on the subject

I started using it yesterday, but a good 6 hours before the website went down.

So if it is us the user agent should be a program called "wget"

The request is to stop making a big deal of it. Alec is the kind of person who would do something simply to demonstrate that he can.

That sounds like a lot BTW but that's not an attack. I've got one website (a forum) that gets 5 requests from Google per second
