Q: What is the "dipole approximation" for subsurface scattering?

Nathan ReedIf you read papers about subsurface scattering, you'll frequently come across references to something called the "dipole approximation". This term seems to go back to the paper A Practical Model for Subsurface Light Transport by Henrik Wann Jensen et al, but this paper is pretty difficult to und...

Hm, I think we should work a bit harder on generating content... the first day was great, but there's only been a single question in the last 20 hours.

Q: Brightness and contrast VS Gamma, is it possible to identify the gamma "correction amount"?

ArmfootTrichoplax question aroused my curiosity and the answers in this question also reminded me why I sometimes use different gamma "amounts" to enhance images. Therefore, is it possible to determine the amount of gamma applied to an image by knowing its source (the original image)? I.e. can the math...

Q: Algorithms for down sampling an image?

Alan WolfeBicubic sampling is pretty good for up sampling an image and making it larger, but is it a good choice for down sampling as well? Are there better choices?

The data from the previous private beta is available for download from Area 51. It's in XML format and I'm not sure the best way to view it, but even in text form it is readable. Is this something that it would be useful for us to look through (main and meta) for ideas? I have two conflicting feelings: There are a large number of questions and answers with voting

To avoid a quick shut down like the previous beta we should really maintain an high question rate. After a first day full of question, the rate dropped significantly. I personally think we should: Re-ask old questions (searching for new answer) from the previous beta as discussed here. Ask questions that we think interesting even though we already know an answe

Q: Can I accelerate rendering an image from a ray cloud using a GPU?

trichoplaxStart with a precalculated "ray cloud" - the starting point and direction of a large number of rays, most of which will not contribute to the image. The image plane's position and orientation are then specified, and the task is to search the ray cloud for rays that intersect the image plane witho...

Q: Polarising reflection and refraction for a wrap around water surface

trichoplaxI want to render realistic images of water in an orbiting space habitat. The image does not need to be generated in real time, although I wouldn't want it to take weeks either. I'm looking for an approach that can generate realistic images in hours or days. The habitat is cylindrical with the cu...

Q: Modelling Young's double slit experiment

trichoplaxYoung's double slit experiment is very simple to set up and simple to explain, but it is an example of both diffraction and interference, neither of which are modelled by conventional raytracing. It is straightforward to render an approximation of the result using textures, but that would requir...

Q: Can I use several GPUs for a grid multi screen image

trichoplaxIs it realistic to render a super-high resolution image over an array of 3 by 3 or 5 by 5 (for example) stacked screens? Could I do this by combining several different GPUs, or would the only way be to use a GPU per screen and simply divide the image to be rendered? Ideally I'd like to be able t...

Q: Cannot access meta from Android app

Martin BüttnerI seem to be unable to access any content on this meta site from the Android app. I thought this might be because we're in private beta, but I have no trouble accessing the metas of the other current private betas. If I open the site itself, the question list shows empty, and if I try a direct li...

tl;dr Android app is fixed now. You need to clear the cached data for the app.
