@YannisRizos Should I personally email SE about the possibility of another contest? How else can I get in touch?

1 hour later…

@Dynamic No reason, your Meta question is enough. I talked to Anna, we need to work out the details first. When he have a detailed outline of the contest posted on Meta, I'll ping her again to talk prizes. I wouldn't hope for cash prizes like the last time, that was probably an one time deal. Site swag on the other hand...
@YannisRizos Well how much do you think we could/should do? I mean, I wrote this up: docs.google.com/document/d/…
That basically "borrows" Super User's contest idea.
But there's also the possibility of "tasks". For example, "Answer two questions with a vote total of 10".
But I think all of that together would be too much.
24 awards? isn't that a bit much?
@YannisRizos Exactly...
I got the idea off of SU, but I forgot to take into consideration that they're a much larger site.

So... first step is to cut the number down
So the concept is ok?
Perhaps we could have a /review category
Too easy to game the system.
Well, the concept... it's Super User's contest really. But, there's only so much we can do.
I think we realized that there is not much more we can do that hasn't already been done.
16:53
Have you looked at other contests for inspiration? Or just the SU one?
@YannisRizos I've looked at everything I could find. It was either a themed contest (which we said we couldn't do) or the SU one.
Or the one we did last year, which still isn't completely out of the question.

An easy way to shrink the number of prizes is to reduce the amount for "top 3" type categories. So it becomes top 1 or top 2. I wouldn't worry too much about this aspect though since SE / Anna needs to weigh in. For example, 24 tee shirts may be comparably nothing from their promotion budget, so it's not a big deal. Or if the prizes are more substantial then it could be a bigger deal. SE needs to weigh in on that, but prize count is easily tweaked.

"Closers" could get morphed into "Reviewers" so it's all review queues, not just close. I don't know how to tap into those numbers so things can be tracked. I know it can be done; I just don't who all has access to that data stream.

BTW, I'm just throwing out ideas to see if anything will stick better

I could see where Rookies, Programmers & MVP get rolled into one branch of the contest. Overall rep change for the contest is worth considering as a category. Brackets by rep can be provided to level out the playing fields.

I'm finally able to articulate why meta participation hasn't sat well with me. Meta is about out-of-band items which by definition means not core to main. It doesn't feel right to create a branch of the contest to encourage out-of-band object generation.

"meta" ought to mean meta-type contributions to main. non-trivial edits; reviews; flags; helpful comments. Regrettably, I've none the clue on how to measure any of those. Oh, and that's what the crud cleaners category captures.

Cruft might be a better term than crap or crud. The latter two aren't bad, they just don't have as pleasant of a connotation to them. I'm hesitant to build a contest using words that can be negatively loaded. Still, far better than some of the other, more obvious alternatives.

thoughts on borrowed: rewarding for activity prior to the contest starting doesn't seem like an inclusive way to grow the site. It's too easily misconstrued as the contest organizers merely rewarding someone they like. On the one hand, it is good to recognize the individual contributions to the community, but I don't think that making it part of the contest would encourage sustained behavior. IMO, the opportunity of hurt feelings outweighs potential benefits.
