9:47 AM
Hi ! So I have a yes/no question that probably isn't worth posting, but . . . do processes retain stdout file descriptor even if they have no controlling terminal ?

10:25 AM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Sounds like a reasonable question to me.
Why do you wan to know?
If you have a reason/context, maybe mention that.

2 hours later…
12:03 PM
@FaheemMitha Do you have more info (eg. 2 models that can be compared?) I would say that nowadays FHD is the minimum you should buy.

12:13 PM
@Fabby FHD?
It's for my guest room. It won't take anything larger than 32 in. And I've mostly been looking at Sonys.

SD = 960x540, HD = 1280x720 FHD = 1920x1080 UHD=4K=

SD = Single Definition
HD = High Definition
FHD = Full High Definition

@FaheemMitha I'll never buy a Sony ever again:

12:16 PM
I generally dislike the idea of Smart TVs, but they are increasingly hard to avoid.
@Fabby Do tell.

They used to be ahead of the curve, now they release too early with too many bugs.

@Fabby I have the impression they still make the best consumer display devices, broadly speaking.
What do you prefer? We have limited options here.

@FaheemMitha HD Ready (Resolution: 1366x768) doesn't exist: it's a Sony invention and does not adhere to Industry standards.
Don't buy.
@FaheemMitha I bought Panasonic.

@Fabby Oh? It doesn't exist?
@Fabby Ok.

@FaheemMitha You know what I mean: yes it exists as obviously Sony is making them.

12:19 PM
@Fabby Yes, I know what you mean.

SD, HD, FHD
keep to standards. better a 32" SD than a weirdo in-between format.

@Fabby What's the problem with this HD Ready format?

Lemme do some Math first.

And other companies make those too, not just Sony.

2 minutes

12:24 PM
Ok.

OK, my advice? Buy a 1280x720 HD one: should be cheaper and adheres to a standard.
HD Ready is just a cheaper way to cut LED panels and doesn't have the same aspect ration (though is very close) to SH, HD and FHD.
I would get frustrated.

@Fabby Those would be hard to find.

HD is fine, FHD is great if you can afford it, UHD aka 4K is the best if you have a goose that lays golden eggs.

Opinions about Smart vs Standard?

I like standard.
@FaheemMitha they are?
it was the standard just a few years ago.

12:28 PM
@Fabby On Amazon India it is. Most of the 32 in ones are HD Ready.

I don't buy on Amazon, so it's blocked on my machine

@Fabby Well, you probably have other options.

@FaheemMitha then look for a 30" one

@Fabby Hmm. I guess i could.

@FaheemMitha I like to see and copare stuff in the store.
That's why I bought Panasonic.

12:30 PM
I'd be happy to get Full HD. But it's hard to get a 32 in with Full HD which isn't Smart.

I had them drag over both the other one I liked (LG) next to the Panasonic

@Fabby I see. What store was that?

@FaheemMitha Russian mVideo store.
(Back when I still lived in Russia???)

Hmm, OBU is selling with 3 years warranty.
@Fabby Oh, Russia?

I actually boutght the TV for my flat for my sister-in-law to watch TV when she came over.

12:33 PM
A 3 year warranty is nothing to sneeze at. But I wonder how good the tv is.

if they give 3Y out of the box???
Can't be bad...

@Fabby Yes 3 years out of the box is pretty good.
And fairly unusual. Trying to find some reviews.

@FaheemMitha I would change my search parameters to 1080 and 24-31"
HD Ready is just a non-standard.
buy a bit smaller with better quality: even for the guest room.

@Fabby Ok, I'll try that. At least looking below 32.

and now I've beaten this horse to death: my opinion stands! ;-)

12:39 PM
@Fabby What are your feelings about Smart TVs?
Much of the discussion on the net is fairly negative.
Hmm, the OBU reviews on Amazon are mostly fake.

12:53 PM
@FaheemMitha It's just a marketing term...

@Fabby Huh? It's a computer in the TV.

@FaheemMitha a sub-par CPU in the cheapo ones
that allows you tu run "apps"

@Fabby That might be the case, but that wasn't my question, exactly.

My computer can be hooked up to my TV and is much smarter than my TV.

@Fabby Yes, but this is for guest use.

12:55 PM
Your guests don't bring their laptop to your house?

I doubt I would get a Smart TV for myself. In any case, I mostly watch stuff on my computer.
@Fabby A few do. I get a lot of international travellers.

:-) My point exactly :-)

@Fabby Sorry, I'm not sure what you are referring to.

@FaheemMitha well: instant-smart TV if you have enough cables around or if the TV has DLNA capabilities.
@FaheemMitha TV + Computer = Very Smart TV.

@Fabby Ah. Well, I don't see myself setting this up for guests.
Would be a bit complicated, for one thing.

12:57 PM
people who don't bring a laptop are luddites and don't need a smart TV.
My TV has HDMI, DLNA, VGA, SCART,
No one ever asked for more.

@Fabby Well, people don't want their laptops to get stolen. And if they are not working, not that much reason to bring a laptop.

I have a work-laptop that I leave behind when going on holiday and a private one that I do bring. along.

@Fabby I see.

Like I said: my opinion is 1080

@Fabby Yes, so you did.

1:00 PM
ensure cable is hooked up, and give HDMI, VGA DLNA and SCART capabilities to guests and you'll never never need ,ore.

@Fabby I don't know what half those acronyms mean.

most just want to watch some cable, some want HDMI, no one wants VGA, and I'd be the only one wanting DLNA.
:D
HDMI = connector
VGA = connector
SCART = Connector

@Fabby That one I know.

@Fabby Interesting.

1:03 PM
My PC runs miniDLNA so My PC can project all my pics, music, movies on my TV.
(stored on PC)

@Fabby Sounds handy. Is that feature standard on TVs these days?

PC goes under bed, move gets projected on TV.
I had to buy a card to insert into my Panasonic to allow that.
(but that was 6 years ago)
No cables! :-)
Horse, beaten, dead.
;-) :-) ;-)

@Fabby Oh, that poor horse.

@FaheemMitha :D :D :D

Ah, so DLNA is wireless?

1:08 PM
yup.
Read the article, install DLNA for your Distro.

@Fabby Like I said, I just play stuff on my computer. I don't really need a TV. Maybe if I had a different setup or was more social.
Anyway, thank you for the thoughts. How are you doing?

@FaheemMitha My PC is everything: TV, Typewriter, calculator, communication device, ...

@Fabby Yes, they're handy things.

My granny never understood what I was actually doing at work...
back then I was a programmer, so I brought my IBM Thinkpad to her once to show what it could do and how I programmed.
first reaction: You're a secretary?
then: You're an accountant!
Then: Oh, you work for TV!
(after showing Weezer's Win95 MPG video)
then I sorta said: Yes, I work for TV but on the Internet, which is a different cable from the TV cable and you need a TV with a keyboard to watch it
She was very impressed! @FaheemMitha

@Fabby Computers have been around for awhile.
They aren't so terribly obscure. Nor is programming.
But I suppose they didn't teach it in schools or anything.

1:17 PM
this video:
@FaheemMitha this was back in 1995 and my grandmother was born in 1902.

@Fabby Oh!

she saw WWI and II, people flying and landing on the moon all in one lifetime.
She never grokked computers...

They had computers by around WW 2, but not in general use.
And the concepts have been around for awhile.
But the technology was lacking.
@Fabby I'm not sure of the relevance of this video.
Oh, this is Happy Days?

when TVs were still square-shaped; (4:3 aspect ratio)
@FaheemMitha Yup!
But the group took a ton of Happy Days footage,µ
mixed in their own footage
and it looks like they're plying in Happy days, but they're not.
this was way before CG simulation.
at the time it was like "wow",
just like Star Wars IV was "wow" back in the late 70s

@Fabby Confusing. Still missing the relevance.

1:25 PM
I mean: my first PC had 64K of RAM
@FaheemMitha It was relevant to my Granny as she had seen Happy Days before.

So, you were close to your granny?

just never that episode with the music mixed in and the group playing.
and I explained her how it worked.
and so her conclusion was that I made the video and she was very impressed.
I just left it at that...
>:-) ;-) >:-)
@FaheemMitha She was the most fantastic woman on this planet.
she would allow me to do stuff I wasn't allowed to do anywhere else:
peel potatoes with a real sharp knife, milk cows (she arranged of a farmer to teach me), cut meat with a huge gigantic knife, use a real machete to clean up her garden, make pancakes, open any cupboard in her house, dress up in bowler hats, fake moustaches, ...

@Fabby Sounds really cool.
@Fabby Like a real-life Auntie Mame?
Which is a really funny novel, by the way.
At least, that's what I remember.

@FaheemMitha googling that

Oh, you haven't heard of it? It's an American thing, I guess.

1:30 PM
@FaheemMitha little did I know she hated peeling potatoes, cutting meat, working in the garden, slaughtering chickens, ...

@Fabby Shades of Tom Sawyer's white picket fence.

I was about 8-9 when I slaughtered my first chicken.

@Fabby Was it a character forming moment?

@FaheemMitha :D It was just:
"Here, let me show you how to slaughter a chicken"
"Now you do those other 3 while I go fetch potatoes from the garden."

Where was this?

1:34 PM
@FaheemMitha just a "Hey! Get on with business" kinda moment.
@FaheemMitha It was also an "I can do anything I want in life! moment.
@FaheemMitha Where I was born.

@Fabby If only that were true...

@FaheemMitha It kinda was: I used to be more of a frightened kid before that and from that moment on, no animal scared me any more...

@Fabby That's great.

(I could always take granny's axe to their head)
:D

So, how are you doing?

1:41 PM
Meh...
mum died July 21st, I had some health problems of which one seems to be lingering, so going to see a doctor here in Germany.
@FaheemMitha You know where I was born, right?

@Fabby I forget.
@Fabby Yes, you mentioned your mother in another room, I think. How are you coping with that?

I'm happy for her.
My brother has more trouble, but he hasn't been arouind as much as I was.
so he has regrets and remorse whenreas I don't...

@Fabby I don't follow.
I mean how you're coping with the loss.
Assuming that's not an overly personal question.
Well, dinner time. Back in a bit.

@FaheemMitha I'm coping well: I'm happy for her that she moved on to the next stage in life (according to her beliefs) and from my POV the difference between Life and Death is a quantum wave collapse between one quantum state and the next.

@Fabby Well, that's very philosophical. But someone you knew is not around any more.
Anyway, glad to hear you are coping well.
Talk to you later. Off to dinner now.

2:11 PM
Shoo!

3:06 PM
@Fabby Shoo?

3:50 PM
@FaheemMitha The sound you make when an animal gets in the way. in this particular case: "go eat")
:D ;-) :D

@Fabby You really like emoticons.

Well, you really need them because they're the difference between: "You're a filthy dog!" and "Please enjoy your meal!" (in this particular case)
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
