So I have an archive that has a particular file in it, say file.txt. I want to use cpio to insert another file into the archive, overwriting the original one.
Is this possible?
I would settle for removing it from the archive and then adding the new one back in its place

Hello
I'm configuring a local network on a server with centos on eth0 with a certain IP
192.168.1.X and a SIP configuration with given IPs by the provider on eth1. The issue is, I was working remotely
and while setting ifup eth1 the putty access is getting disconnected!! I double checked that the physical connectivity is right and checked the same using mii-tool eth1
by unplugging the cable by the onsite technician. Also, while restarting the network using /etc/init.d/network restart I couldn't connect to the server again

@bbayles cpio, just like tar, does not allow for removing or updating existing archive data. You may however add data to the end of the archive.
See the cpio manual for -o -A -F.

Can anyone comment where the best SE site would be for discussions of third party Linux based firmware (like Tomato) for home routers?
15:44
@FaheemMitha Hmmm... That's a tricky one.
16:15
@FaheemMitha The IoT site? iot.stackexchange.com
assuming that you're using/administering one and not developing one
Yes, that is correct. I missed the line "The underlying *nix OS on an embedded system or handheld device (e.g. an Android phone)"
... in the help centre.

@Gilles Yes, using, not developing. Thanks.
@Kusalananda Ah. I'll check that one out. It looks fairly new. Thanks.
@FaheemMitha For your topic though, I think U&L should be on-topic too.
... as Gilles said.
@Kusalananda Hey. I'm not sure that Tomato etc would be on topic on IoT, though. Based on looking at the site.
It says standard networking is off-topic.
No, I don't think so either. I was just not aware of embedded devices being on-topic here, so I proposed the closest-sounding other site.
@Kusalananda U&L wouldn't be a conventional home for such questions, either. Tomato gets quite a lot of hits, but it's mostly peripheral to standard Unix questions.
Superuser might be a better place. It actually has a tag.
@FaheemMitha The reason Unix & Linux doesn't have a tag is that by the time the site was founded, the original Tomato had been discontinued, and I don't think any of the forks became really popular
We have tags for other WRT variants: and

@Gilles I see.
I'm still running the original Tomato here.
