@Braiam: Do you want me to give you links of all the results i have got when googled. Nobody has time to ask the question just for fun. This is SE - Unix & Linux, not funny blogs or facebook and i know that for sure. — Bhavik Shah 7 hours ago
he expects not giving links because it's SE?

12:11 PM
@Braiam Well, mine didn't :-P ... but of course, maybe its configurable. Or maybe you can do it with mod_security, or a proxy in front of Apache.

2 hours later…
1:59 PM
Since there are bunches of people here who use Perl, does perl have an interactive interpreter like python or R?
command line interpreter that is
Actually, same question for ruby.

@FaheemMitha I've never used one but there is probably a way to do it. No idea why you would want to though.
100
Q: How can I start an interactive console for Perl?

ibzHow can I start an interactive console for Perl, similar to the irb command for Ruby or python for Python?

@terdon To type stuff interactively?

@FaheemMitha ruby has

@Braiam Apparently irb

@FaheemMitha Dunno, never saw the point meself.

2:05 PM
@terdon I'm surprised. Don't you do things interactively? You do everything in batch mode?

people use interactive perl? new to me too
i don't even use interactive python (with the exception being ipython notebook occasionally)

@FaheemMitha Um, yes. I can't think of a time I would want to do something interactively.

meh, I should answer the command line questions to get the silver badge D:

2:25 PM
@goldilocks You pronounce UPS as you-pee-ess? Weird... (re: unix.stackexchange.com/questions/148510/…)

Evening! :)
@casey Hey! Help me out with how the authentication mechanism in Linux works, will ya?

@derobert How do you pronounce it?

slm
2:44 PM
@FaheemMitha in ruby there's many besides irb. There's pry as well.

@terdon like the word "up", with an s on the end

@derobert Huh, OK. I'd never heard that, I always pronounce it as an acronym, like DHL.

I'm not sure how to pronounce DHL. They don't deliver many packages to me... UPS the delivery company, though, is "oops", named after what they did to the package, of course.

@derobert UPS has a song called "UPS loves logistics" and they pronounce it as U-P-S

@LittleChild Well, sure, they don't think their company is named after dropping packages.

2:54 PM
DHL is prunounced as "the hell?". That's the reaction when one's package arrives late @derobert

@LittleChild Ah! That'd make sense.

LOL !

And of course, FedEx is FedUp.

I would be weary of FedEx. It has a "Fed" in it. Maybe they look into my packages. No respect for privacy. xD

@LittleChild He's an ex fed. No problem there.

2:57 PM
who is? 0_0
frantically turns on his VPN xD

@slm Thanks. Which do you recommend?
@derobert :-)

@LittleChild Amazingly enough, UPS is the one who apparently went along with the feds demands. The feds are currently prosecuting FedEx as a drug trafficker...

@terdon You surprise me.
@casey You surprise me as well.

I came here for Linux and got talking to an ex-Fed. WOW! What was life like? Could you beat up random people and threaten them? just for fun, that is? xD #kidding

/me is surprised today.

3:01 PM
/me isn't an ex-fed...

@FaheemMitha my version of interactivity comes from the wealth of my many terminals windows. Write in one, run in one, debug in one. all at once.

^^

@FaheemMitha You see, sometimes I suffer from split personality. I am so lonely that I usually ask my system whoami?
@derobert trolled xD

@casey All at once? How many keyboards and monitors and hands do you have?
@LittleChild And what does it reply?

@FaheemMitha normally just one keyboard, 3 or 4 monitors, depending on my mood

3:02 PM
nothing appropriate @FaheemMitha
bwahaha

@LittleChild Although, I once lived next door to the director of the CIA. Does that count for anything?

@casey You're kidding.
@derobert Seriously? Who was that?

I better prepare to run.

@FaheemMitha I was running a 40" tv as monitor #4, but I stuck a chromecast on it instead, so It typically isn't connected to my video card anymore

@FaheemMitha Brennan. The current one.

3:03 PM
Drop off the grid. Go incognito.

@casey Oh, so you aren't kidding.
@derobert Oh, Ok. did you ever meet him?

Okay a little help with how the passwords are matched. Help? Anyone? @casey ?

I think CIA hq is in Langley. Did you live there once?

@FaheemMitha Well, I saw him. Didn't really ever talk to him.

@derobert Oh.

3:04 PM
@FaheemMitha No, but remember I'm close to DC. So it's not that odd to have government officials living nearby.

One always thinks of CIA people as pretty scary. Never met one, though. Hope to keep it that way.
@derobert Sure.

@derobert I was really just teasing. So you'd says "ups", like "up" plural?

@goldilocks Yep. When referring to the battery unit that keeps the server up. Not the package delivery company.

My bad then!

@FaheemMitha see the images in unix.stackexchange.com/questions/138770/…

3:07 PM
Heh. I'm not sure how widespread each pronunciation is.

@LittleChild take input from user, encrypt/hash it, compare to stored hash.

@casey Okay from the /etc/shadows file?

@derobert I'm not a professional sys admin or anything, so I can't say it's something I've ever talked to anyone about.

I call the brown trucks U P S but my batteries are "ups" because it almost sounds like "oops"

But when I do, I'll be in on the "ups".
Yeah it does sound like oops.

3:09 PM
@LittleChild typically. read up on PAM, as most authentication is handled by that, and its not my area of specialty

Okay !

and PAM can handle different backends afaik. shadow, LDAP, etc

@casey Impressive. I upvoted just because if the images - didn't bother to read the actual question. Did you solve the issue?

Q: What happens when you plug a UPS into itself?

Tim PostUPSey daisy; so we had a little ... incident ... Pretty sure that has power. We're past that now, and things are returning to normal. It's only appropriate that we take a moment to think about the folks that got pulled out of bed and worked their knuckles to the bone to get things back up and...

I call them U. P. S. as acronym, because that's what they are

@FaheemMitha nope. I have ideas but I stopped caring about it. The monitor at least blanks now, but doesn't enter powersaving
@Braiam yes, but if it has to turn on, something else went "oops" :)

3:16 PM
@Braiam next you'll be calling SCSI ess-see-ess-eye! Or SQL ess-cue-ell.

or RADAR, or LIDAR, or any number of pronounceable acronyms
I like the hybrids like LVD SCSI. I go letters on the first but not on the second

Hard to pronounce LVD. I guess unless its livid.
Livid scuzzy does have a weird ring to it :-)

@derobert Wha? How do you pronounce SQL?
Sequel?

Yes. see-quel

No shit!
And My sequel?

3:19 PM
yep

@terdon O_O

Wow, I've always said Ess Cue Ell.

@derobert I love spanish... ese-cu-ele

I have always said Sequel :)

@terdon Yeah. I think that one has a lot of folks on both sides, even among DBAs.

3:20 PM
It does according to wikipedia:
SQL (/ˈɛs kjuː ˈɛl/, or /ˈsiːkwəl/; Structured Query Language) is a special-purpose programming language designed for managing data held in a relational database management system (RDBMS). Originally based upon relational algebra and tuple relational calculus, SQL consists of a data definition language and a data manipulation language. The scope of SQL includes data insert, query, update and delete, schema creation and modification, and data access control. Although SQL is often described as, and to a great extent is, a declarative language (4GL), it also includes procedural elements. SQL was one...

Though PostgreSQL is Postgres que ell. Or just Postgres.
Or p g

> SQL (/ˈɛs kjuː ˈɛl/, or /ˈsiːkwəl/

slm
@FaheemMitha I'm a ruby novice now. I used it a long time ago when irb was as good as it got, in re-learning ruby I'd go with pry

@casey Exactly.

at least no one here is ponouncing SQL "oracle"

3:22 PM
@casey I call that one Snoracle :-)

@casey I just say: EEEEKKKKKK!

BTW... en.wiktionary.org/wiki/UPS labels the battery an acronym vs. the package company as an initialism, so they call the battery up+s
And that "UPSey daisy; so we had a little ... incident ... " line from the plug an UPS into itself post would seem to imply they pronounce it ups as well, becuase U. P. S. eeee daisy wouldn't make sence.

Personally, I think NoSQL databases are pretty awesome :)

sence?

@slm Ok, I'll try pry. Thanks.

slm
3:35 PM
@FaheemMitha there are some very good video tutorials that show how to use it. off the main site

Operating System QnA anyone?
http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/55360/operating-systems?commit=1

I can recognize an interesting topic even if I don't know what being talked about, if the people asking/answering make them so (cue stackoverflow.com/q/25124664/792066)

3:50 PM
To update /etc/crontab do I simply edit the file?

@Nick Yes

@terdon does it auto update or I need to restart cron?

@Nick Cron reads the file every 5 minutes (if I remember correctly) no need to restart anything, the file is read each time the daemon wakes up.

alright removed the entry I wanted lets see if it updated

@terdon s/5 minutes/minute/

3:56 PM
(*system*) RELOAD (/etc/crontab) Yup!

anacron does it differently

@Braiam Is it minute? OK.
Yup, thanks:
> cron then wakes up every minute, examining all stored crontabs, check‐
ing each command to see if it should be run in the current minute.

@slm For pry?
How people here use perl? Just curous.
pry installs here, but then promptly crashes. On Debian wheezy - package is from Debian testing/unstable

4:12 PM
@FaheemMitha What do you mean? Have you ever read any of my answers?
Or derobert's or gnouc's?

@FaheemMitha Still here?

@terdon If you mean, your perl answers, then I've read a few, yes. I don't recall reading any perl answers from @derobert or @gnouc.
As for what I mean, I think the question is perfectly clear.
@LittleChild At the moment.

@FaheemMitha Oh they both post quite a few one liners here and there.

@terdon I don't use or know perl, so I usually don't look for them. I am capable of running a perl script, but not much else.

@FaheemMitha I honestly don't understand. I use Perl for pretty much anything and I would guess a majority of my answers here are Perl solutions.

4:14 PM
@FaheemMitha If you had 30k, what laptop would you go for?
Im thinking of Toshiba Satellite c50-a

@LittleChild you have unlimited budget and go for a toshiba?

@terdon I'm just asking how many people in chat use perl, that's all. An informal poll, if you like.

@terdon INR 30k. Not dollars.

Ah, thanks :)

@terdon I would go for a gaming mean machine if I had that kind of money

4:16 PM
@FaheemMitha I know that derobert, gnouc and slm as well as myself all do. Also Gilles and Stephane of course.

@LittleChild Dunno. Does it have to be a laptop? Desktops are usually better value for money. I'd actually recommend my computer people. They are not perfect, but they are a long way better than average for a lunatic asylum like India, I'd bet.

@terdon glenn jackman used to provide as well.

@FaheemMitha I've got a few computer people in Lamington. Yes, laptop because my current laptop is 4 years old and is beginning to develop problems. Loads of them
Satellite has a decent config for that kind of money. 4 gigs of RAM, i3 Processor. Windows 8.1 (useless, anyway, since I will be installing Linux)

@LittleChild Ok. I don't really know what is available in India, laptop-wise. Do you travel around a lot, so need a mobile computer? I personally would hesitate to carry a laptop around in Bombay, because of theft.
My workstation mb died last year, so I had to replace various parts in my machine, which was 50,000.

@FaheemMitha Yeah theft is a problem. I will be carrying it to college, mostly, which is a short walk from home. Yes, apart from that I travel a lot.

4:21 PM
@LittleChild I see.

"Ubuntu and Dell Inspiron N5010" vs. "Through NM says I'm connected to a wireless network, firefox can't connect to any site"
which is better title?

The IBM laptops used to be the best, but since Lenovo took over, I don't know. In any case, they are very pricey.

There is Satellite and then there is Dell 3540. @FaheemMitha I am more inclined towards Toshiba. Rugged creatures.
3540 looks bukly. Have a look at this

@terdon Ok, that's most of the regulars. How about @patrick and @casey?

@FaheemMitha Lenovo have a cheap range as well. I can confirm that the t4500 I have is an excellent little machine. They have now changed the keyboard (ina fit of idiocy) so I can't speak for the newer lenovo models.
@FaheemMitha Dunno, ask them. Most *nix people probably know some perl.

4:24 PM
@terdon I had IBM laptops for a long time. They were pretty good. My current one is lenovo and is slowly dying. I don't really use it, though it still booted fine the last time I used it much, which was last year, I guess.
The battery has gone, so it is not really usable as a laptop without that.

@FaheemMitha I torment my laptop. I use my HP for like 8 hours a day, minimum.
@FaheemMitha compare Lenovo with this

@LittleChild That's a lot. If you are using Linux on it, check for compatability.

@FaheemMitha Why would compatibility be an issue?

@LittleChild Linux compatibility is still an issue for laptops. Ask anyone.

@FaheemMitha Dell 3540 comes with exact same config and has Ubuntu 12.04 pre-installed if you ask.
So my guess was that it wouldnt matter if it was a Toshiba laptop

4:27 PM
@LittleChild Exact same as ...?

Toshiba Satellite C-50A
Want me to link you to both?

@LittleChild ok. Some of the internal hw may not be listed in detail.
Personally, I think preinstalled Linux is a good option.
Assuming you use Linux, of course.

here is Satellite C-50 and here is Dell Latitude 3540 @FaheemMitha

@LittleChild I see them. doesn't say what the mb is.
Usually one finds out linux compatibility by searching online.

ah and mobo could be an issue?

4:32 PM
@LittleChild It's possible. I advise caution. And don't take things for granted. (Always a good life policy, especially when you live in India.) Though laptop Linux compatibility doesn't have anything to do with being in India, of course.

hahaha yeah, gladly.

@LittleChild Do you actually use Linux? I'm not clear about that.

@FaheemMitha I do. I have a dual-boot machine atm.
I am on Ubuntu now.

@LittleChild Ok. In that case I recommend a little research. Lots of people write about installing Linux on their laptops, or they used to. These days, it is more common, and has better hw support, so they may be doing it less.
Once upon time the Linux kernel was really hardcore hacker stuff, but that has not been the case for a long time.

eh.. I cant find anything online about Satellite's linux support. Some online sellers offer Ubuntu with it but I guess that isn't enough, is it?
You give it a shot, maybe? @FaheemMitha

4:34 PM
@LittleChild I'm surprised. You can't find anything about linux on Toshiba Satellites?

@LittleChild There should be no problem. Just make sure the wifi card and touchpad work. Everything else will either be standardized or irrelevant.

Anyway, buying Linux preloaded is a good choice, if available.

@FaheemMitha here is my search query Toshiba Satellite c50a i0111 linux support

@LittleChild Too specific. Try "toshiba satellite linux"

4:36 PM
@LittleChild that too
@terdon Yes, the peripherals are more likely to be a problem, but that doesn't mean the mb can't be, especially with newer models. @LittleChild Again, don't take stuff for granted.

@terdon what do you suggest?

And of course, you can't return anything in India, so caveat emptor.

@LittleChild Don't really know, they change so often. I always spend a few weeks searching before buying a laptop. Make sure you read reviews. You would have to try very hard to find one that can't run Linux though. Most do.

@terdon True, but it is always possible to be unlucky.

4:41 PM
@terdon The site linux-on-laptops.com/toshiba.html doesn't list my model. :-/

@LittleChild if an option (maybe not in India) try booting the laptop with a live disk. Of course, the sales people will probably assuming you are trying to install a virus...
Though they have heard of Linux in India, some of them.
@LittleChild what is your distribution of choice? Ubuntu?

@FaheemMitha Well, if it comes pre-laoded with Windows 8.1, I can dual boot. Make an extended partition, make a couple partitions in it, and then install Linux on one
@FaheemMitha I am stuck between CentOS, Debian and Ubuntu
I guess I will go for Ubuntu because it seems to the famous one and hence wider support

@LittleChild Ok. Stuck means - can't choose?

yeah. Cant choose.
@FaheemMitha What do you suggest?

@LittleChild What distribution?

4:49 PM
yeah. What distro?

I use Debian. Since 2001. I don't know of a compelling reason to use anything else. Unless, you really, really like source-based distributions.
Which have some advantages, granted.
IMO there is no reason to use Ubuntu over Debian.

A lot of Java developers use Debian
I tried installing Debian on VirtualBox. Couldn't get a UI on it.

Ubuntu is just a Debian derivative. A bit more user friendly, and more polish. Better out of the box hw support. And some added bugs.
@LittleChild Host?

Win 7

@LittleChild Ok.

4:52 PM
32 bit

Personally I'd run Windows on top of Linux rather than the other way around.

@FaheemMitha Looks like I will be doing that soon :) Are you in sophomore year ?

Better if you don't have to run Windows at all, of course.
People say good things about Macs occasionally. E.g. here.
@LittleChild No.

@FaheemMitha then which year are you in?

@LittleChild I'm not a student.

4:56 PM
@FaheemMitha oh? professional?

@LittleChild Not sure what that means. But sure, why not.

@FaheemMitha Let me rephrase that. Are you employed as a computer professional? xD

@LittleChild No.

Freelance?

@LittleChild I guess you could say that.

4:58 PM
Cool ! How old are you?
You've been on Debian since 2001. I guess you must be 25?
stupid deduction but yeah xD

@LittleChild Huh? How do you figure that?

@terdon Wild guess xD

He's a good deal older than that :)

in 2001 I was a kiddo. So if somebody was using Debian then, definitely he is older than I am

@LittleChild Umm, most of us in this chat room are older than you are then :)

5:05 PM
haha!
That's good in a way that you guys are way more experienced than I am

Anyone know how to block hulu plus ads?

5:27 PM
@Ramesh: Did you try newest suggestion in my comment?

5:37 PM
@FaheemMitha I'm not the best person to ask laptop advice from my only purchasing requirement is screen res > 1920x1080 and a preference for a unix/linux OS. The first requirement is rather limiting and so my last purchase was a macbook pro
the 100% solid state laptop is nice too, and >8hr battery, so I'm generally happy with that purchase

@casey It wasn't me asking.

you were the one who pinged me though :)

@casey Oh, I was?
Apologies.

I think you pinged him about perl not laptops.

@terdon Possibly.
I remember now, I was doing a poll of perl users.

5:51 PM
1 hour ago, by Faheem Mitha
@terdon Ok, that's most of the regulars. How about @patrick and @casey?

Oh, my mistake then
@FaheemMitha I use perl when it suits me, but not often enough that I'd call myself a "perl user". I'm much more commonly using python, but my scripting needs tend toward visualization and numerical analysis.

@casey Ok. I see.

6:30 PM
@FaheemMitha yes for pry pryrepl.org

@slm Ok, thanks.

@slm you've caused controversy on AU :)

Q: Way to see how a question actually looks?

TimIn the review for suggested edits queue, there was this post: https://askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/297636 Now the edit seems fine, but what are all the  s doing there? I'm not that good (in my mind) of seeing how the mark-up will actually 'translate' into html, especially when th...

@Gnouc I will try that out. But I believe it has to do with multiple NICs, I suspect. Anyways, you pointed me in the right direction. Thanks.

6:52 PM
Is this some new feature?
I was trying to actually edit the question. But it gave me a warning message as above.
And the warning is directed towards the editor which is weird.

drs
@Ramesh, I got the same message this morning when editing a title to "How do you redirect audio output in FreeRDP?" I don't remember to edit titles too often but I don't remember seeing this on an edit before.

@drs, but it seems weird to me as the message is directed towards the editor.

@Ramesh, I agree

@terdon ha. Still debating about some slacker getting free rep. Do we really care if one guy gets a few more upvotes as a result? I thought that edit made more sense then to pile on yet another A. I find the AU Q's already have way too many A's when I'm searching for stuff 8-)
@terdon - I figured he found the link, all I did was shift the content to AU in case the site went away.

7:25 PM
@Braiam New site, right?

@FaheemMitha yea

7:39 PM
It seems bash doesn't have anything like python's re library - docs.python.org/2/library/re.html
The closest is those funky ## operator thingys.
parameter expansion, perhaps.

@FaheemMitha yes, it does: the =~ operator inside [[ … ]]
and for file matching, it has ksh-style extended globs, with shopt -s extglob
ksh globs have all the features of regexps, with a different syntax

Is this question a duplicate of that question?
4
Q: Place job in background without freeze

user877329Say you start the job like this foo and then desire that you want to place it in background. Typing Ctrl+Z and then bg does the trick but will freeze foo between Ctrl+Z and bg. How can I place foo in the background without first freeze it?

8
Q: How do you send command line apps directly to the background?

trusktrI already know that pressing ctrl+z stops the app, then I can send the app to background with the bg command, but that means there is a brief preiod of time that the app is stopped. How do I send the app directly to the background without stopping it?

#1 is specifically about bash. #2 is the same question but doesn't specify a particular shell.
I've answered #2 with two parts: an explanation of why it can't be done completely seamlessly, and a way to make it pretty close to seamless with zsh.
I'm not sure whether to close as duplicate or repeat the first part of my answer on #1
